DF Gameplay Questions / Utility programs for a Mac?
« on: May 22, 2009, 11:37:04 am »
I've been looking around, but I can't seem to find any Mac OS X ports of the utility programs, excepting Dwarf Foreman.

Does anyone know where to find such program ports, or if they even exist at this time?

Also - please, no comments on 'get a pc' or such.  It's nothing but a troll.

Okay, I want to see some creativity here, but I also want you to keep it to things that actually happened.

Here's mine:

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Megaproject Phase One Complete
« on: May 21, 2009, 05:41:07 pm »
I had to scale back on size due to there not being enough magma (there's never enough, but too little for this, specifically).

I had intended to create a 100x100 tower of 'natural' obsidian by creating glass forms, flooding a level with magma, flooding the next level with water, raising the forms, and repeating.

At this time, I am creating a 100x50 tower.  The first level has just been filled with magma, and I am now preparing it to receive the cooling shockwave of water from a nearby brook (where the water will drain to when I'm done).

So, yes.  I currently possess a ground-level 100x50 reservoir at 7/7 magma in every tile.

For kicks, I'm going to copy the world and have the walls deconstructed in the copy.  See what happens.

if anyone wants to tell me how to get pics up to show you without having to get an account somewhere else, I'd be thrilled to get some screenshots posted for you all.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / SERIOUSLY?????
« on: May 21, 2009, 03:18:08 pm »
Apparently, the human diplomat can pass through forbidden doors without any issues.

Well, except for the part where the entire orc siege is right outside said door, having just killed everyone in the Trade Depot.

And now, of course, the 50-someodd orcs are all inside my fortress, killing my 34 dwarves.  Because the human diplomat can open locked doors.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / My first true Megaproject
« on: May 15, 2009, 12:48:25 pm »
I particularly liked a site I'd found (no slopes whatsoever, all sand, brook, magma pipe extending to the surface).  I kept it for glass fortress challenges.

Now, though, I've decided on something different.

Using a system of pumps and dwarven labor, I am creating a 100x100 tower of obsidian, as tall as I can make it go.  Once complete, I will dig a beautiful above-ground fortress into the obsidian.  This will then be smoothed and engraved.  Later, if I still need more room, I may expand the forms and make the entire tower even wider, or I may decide to create an underground complex.

Of course, once it's finished, there will have to be two automated pumping systems set up, alternating waterfalls and magmafalls across the entire outer surface.  There will, of course, be a drowning system for the trade depot, as well as a controllable magmafall directly over the entrance (those orcs won't know what hit them).

I'm currently setting up the temporary fortress-hut and generating the glass blocks I'll need for the forms.  Tedious, but this will be worth it.

Oh, and an extra challenge - no trees on the map at all, I have to get all wood from merchants, as well as metal and other such things normally acquired with forestry and mining.  There are only a few shrubs and such, so it'll take some luck to get any farming running.

As in my last several fortresses, I will not dig down below the surface of the map, with one exception - I will set magma pumping up to start from a few z-levels down, for that extra bit of speed (and to fight off magma evaporation).

EDIT:  Also, except right next to the magma pipe, the entire map is subject to a surface-level aquifer.

EDIT #2:  I accidentally forgot to include any fire-safe materials on embark, so EXTRA CHALLENGE.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / My first historical artifact
« on: May 14, 2009, 08:19:48 pm »
Well, of all the artifacts that I've ever managed to get, this is the first to have any kind of historical event.

The best part is, it's referencing the first siege of my fortress by Rysith's orcs.  The siege itself is named, which I didn't know happened.

Also - I'm typing the description almost verbatim, and the orc is, indeed, missing its name - I hadn't turned on the [CAN_SPEAK] tag on them yet, so there are no orcs with names.  The only change I'm making is to place an X where the orc's name should be.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I name all of my marksdwarfs 'Gunner' just as I use nicknames to label all dwarves with professions and such.  It's easier that way.

DF Modding / Help with a reaction mod
« on: May 13, 2009, 02:04:13 pm »
I'm having some trouble getting this reaction to work properly.
Code: [Select]
[REACTION:FEATHER_WOOD_TO_FOOD]
[NAME:Make sun berries from feather tree logs]
[SMELTER]
[REAGENT:1:WOOD:NO_SUBTYPE:WOOD:FEATHER]
[PRODUCT:100:20:FOOD:ITEM_FOOD_ROAST:PLANT:BERRY_SUN]
Specifically, it consumes the wood, but produces nothing.  I've tried several variations in the [PRODUCT] line, but nothing is produced.

Also, in the errorlog.txt, I get the following string each time I run the reaction:
Code: [Select]
Unrecognized Sphere Token: PLANT
What am I doing wrong?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The entertainment value of rhesus
« on: May 11, 2009, 12:57:12 pm »
Well, my current fortress (Angrymuffin) sees regular rhesus macaque raids, but I've set the doors to keep the little bugger outside.

The downside is that the elves are going to be annoyed now.  Why?  My Trade Depot is outside, and the latest rhesus raid headed straight for it.

Each rhesus grabbed a unit of GCS cloth (dyed, no less), and ran off.

I swear, if they're wearing GSC clothing the next time they show up, I'm abandoning this fortress.  I don't want to be responsible for spawning an intelligent race of thieving rhesus.

DF Modding / I need more bolts.
« on: May 06, 2009, 11:38:55 pm »
Specifically, I need to be able to make glass bolts.  It makes sense to me, but I don't know the right tokens, nor which file(s) I need to modify.

Help?

DF Gameplay Questions / Bones and Refuse
« on: May 05, 2009, 07:21:18 pm »
If my refuse pile is outside, light, aboveground, I've been told that bones will eventually vanish.
Does this also occur when the refuse pile is inside, light, aboveground?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Orc Mod Overdose
« on: May 05, 2009, 04:59:26 pm »
I've installed the orc mod, and found that, rather than half the year, the sieges tend to wait about 11 months - or right until the next siege shows up.

Also, they've been ramping up even though their presence has stalled my glass tower.  I still only have the original 7 dwarves (no immigrants this season, 3 years in a row), and I'm currently besieged by 50 orcs.
Luckily, I had brought a bunch of animals for food and such, so bone bolts a-plenty, but I can't risk dwarven fatalities with such a low population, and there are more than a dozen orcish bowmen outside, including a legendary one, all of them with steel arrows and various bows.

DF Modding / Forced Surface-level pipes?
« on: May 05, 2009, 01:13:28 pm »
Is there any way to mod DF so that all magma pipes are forced to extend to the surface?  I'm tired of having to dig around to find the things.

DF Gameplay Questions / Ice that won't melt?
« on: April 28, 2009, 11:34:57 pm »
There's a section of my brook that won't melt, even though I have magma channeled directly under it.  The section directly north of it thawed, and temperature is on.  Also, I think it's in a different biome, since it stayed frozen through most of the first year, before I got the magma under it.

Is there something about the freezing biomes being cold enough for water to stay frozen even with magma under it?

DF Modding / War in my world, please!
« on: April 28, 2009, 11:54:04 am »
Is there any way to mod a save to put another civilization at war with mine?

Failing that, is there a way to increase the odds of another civilization being at war with mine when I generate a new world?  I'd like to actually face combat from something other than goblins and kobolds, and the orcs in the orc mod sent me a freaking caravan, so they're no help how they are.

I found my magma pipe in my current fortress, but it's too low for my purposes.  As such, I've assembled a pumping system to bring the magma up and dump it in the chamber I hollowed out above the pipe.  This should, in effect, extend the pipe (I think).

Of course, it might create lots of fun, but I wouldn't really mind all that much.
