General Discussion / Hitchhiking through England?
« on: December 25, 2010, 09:56:48 pm »
Okay, so I know there are quite a number of English people on this forum, so there we go:

I planned on hitchhiking through England (or a part of it, I don't really have any goal) in summer and my father told me that it would be impossible. He said English people don't really like taking anybody with them in their car, but my father tried that about 30 years ago, so it might have changed. Anyway, the questions are:
Do you have any experiences with that? Do you think it would work?

And before anybody tries to recommend train or bus: It's not about getting somewhere, it's about hitchhiking. Don't judge me, it's just something I've always wanted to try.

Thanks for any and all answers!

Edit: Meh, should have posted this in Life Advice, maybe? I think I'm gonna do that. Sorry! Topic locked.

DF Modding / [40d] Problem: Creature names missing
« on: August 20, 2010, 07:55:52 pm »
Hi, there!

A friend of mine started making a mod which also contains Beholders and Guaths from DnD. It's not really important what they are, but although they do appear in Legends, the beholders (I think) only appear as "creatures".

To answer the obvious questions:
Yes, I use a clean 40d with only the beholders and guaths added.
Yes, I deleted /data/objects.
Yes, I genned a new world.

With that in mind, does anyone know why this happens and how to avoid it?
Thanks in advance!

I've fixed everything I knew, but it wasn't enough.

DF Wiki Discussion / Quality articles?
« on: August 19, 2010, 05:13:22 pm »
I've recently found the article on article quality and I've found a few weird things.
For example, all the so-called "Masterwork" articles are not.
"On the origins of dwarfs" is just a collection of in-jokes and
1. does not cover an important must-read topic
2. is not comprehensive on the subject (What's the point of the article?)
3. contains tons of unverified information
4. is not aesthetically pleasing
Now, I have nothing against that article. In the contrary, it's hilarious and you should definitely read it, but it's not a "masterwork" article.

JohnnyMadhouse's userpage doesn't contain any outbound links, is not about the game at all and is extremely short. It's not, by any stretch of the imagination, a masterwork article. Yes, I know that the "Quality" bar is for easier access to the quality lists, but that's what this article is for.

Rhenaya's userpage is amusing to read, but it doesn't really cover any topic of the game, has only one editor and is not properly categorized.

The "Exceptional Quality" articles aren't really any better. Sure, the "Acronyms" page is helpful, but it only contains a very small amount of information. "Bentgirder" is truly a Masterful page, in my opinion because it's SO FREAKING HELPFUL for beginners. Having the page itself ("Exceptional Quality" and "Exceptional Article") on the list is ridiculous. "Game Development" is kind of interesting, but not really important for the majority of the players; it also contains only very few links to the rest of the wiki. "IRC" is no; just No. It's not even about the game! "Tholtig" is truly D for Dwarf, but not exceptional because it's doesn't really give any information at all except that in one game there was this awesome dwarf who did stuff. Now, "Urist" is a completely useless article. I'm not saying it should be deleted, but it's definitely not exceptional. And Johnny again.

I really don't want to go through all the "fine" articles, but did anyone even read the definitions when they were categorizing these articles?

General Discussion / Streaming in a few minutes
« on: July 23, 2010, 05:55:03 pm »
Hey there, peeps! Haven't posted here in a long time, but anyway, I spontaneously decided that I would like to stream today. So, that's what's gonna happen. Only my third stream total, so don't expect anything extraordinary.
With that said, here be the link:

DF Bug Reports / [0.31.01] Underpowered weapons
« on: April 01, 2010, 03:14:00 pm »
I was trying arena mode today and I created a no-skill alligator and a Grand Master Everything dwarf (also Hammerdwarf), I gave him an Adamantine War Hammer (not Raw Adamantine) and started mauling the alligator.

I only bruised his muscles, his fat etc. more than 100 times and it died from suffocation. I don't know if this is a bug or a feature, but if it is a feature, weapons are painfully useless.

Other Games / Mornington Crescent

Mornington Crescent!
One of the strangest games on earth. There are no set rules, they get made up during the game, are extremely complicated and totally irrelevant!
It's all about being creative and explaining your move in the most incomprehensible way. It's what makes this game fun! You can find a list of rules here and you can play it here, here and, of course, also on this very forum.

In this thread, you can post some stories of Mornington Crescent. The strangest games are totally the best games!

Okay, I don't know if any of you know this game, but just read the Wikipedia page about it. It's difficult to understand, but easy to play. This is definitely the most entertaining game of MC I've ever seen, this is basically a standard game of MC.
You can find the game rules here.
Spoiler: REAL rules (click to show/hide)

Winning station is, of course, Mornington Crescent. You can find a London tube map here.

I start with Leyton, home station at Blackhorse Road, allowing for some diagonals and hop-striling to St. Paul's. The hard part is going to be getting around Putney Bridge...
