Mafia / The Attendance Ranking Board, Quarter 2, 2010
« on: March 27, 2010, 08:32:41 am »
Welcome to Quarter 2  of the 2010 Attendance Ranking Board.

The current Quarter shall run from March 22st to the June 21st.

A few quick notes:

1. Last quarters's grade listed beside the current grade . Note that it's the current grade that counts this quarter.

2. Everyone except S and F ranks start off as (NA) meaning they have no record.  They will obtain one upon completing a game.  Any player that is still (NA) by the end of the quarter will be removed from the list.

3. S ranks now have a 3 game minimum per quarter to maintain in order to remain an S rank.

An FAQ, for your convienence:

Beginner's Mafia 10 is open for sign ups.

So begins YET another Beginner's Mafia.

For those that do not know what Mafia is at all, here is a Basic Tutorial.  If you are still confused, this is still the game for you.

I need 9 players who are new or still inexperienced. If you've never played in these forums then this is exactly for you.  If you have played before and have played less than 5 complete games (thus either ranked 'N' on the Attendance Board or not listed at all) you will always be able to join.  All others may still ask: chances are, you already know if you are too experienced or not.

Note, you may ONLY play in one Beginner's Mafia at a time.  You may join if you are playing a different mafia game or if you had died in another Beginner's game.

I will also want 2 ICs.  ICs are nonplayers who act as coaches: one for the mafia, one for the town.  Instead, they will help the actual players gather themselves together, spot scum/town tells, learn about terminology, ext.

They can comment freely on the game but should focus on developing good players, NOT winning the game.  The Town IC knows what the town knows and assists the town only.  The Mafia IC can speak to the mafia directly to assist them.  Note that the Mafia IC can speak to the town but can NOT harm them or misdirect them.  As such you do not have to fear either IC.

Note that though the ICs can speak as they wish, they are not there to win the game for you, only help you play better.

I'm also accepting one person who wishes to host the game as well.  If you've always wanted to host but have been afraid to, this will be a good opportunity to practice.  I will act as co-host and help with any matters you need.

A warning: only accept this IF you are sure you will be active and attentive.  If you even THINK you MAY have problems keeping up as a host then please wait until you are sure of your schedual. The entire game relies upon the host.

The Rules:
You may NOT PM to anyone except to me or from one mafia member to another.  Furthermore, ALL discussion about this game, even indirectly, can only occur in this thread.

All votes must be colored red.  To avoid confusion, only use that color when you are voting for someone.  You must also Unvote before you vote for another.  If you do NOT unvote, your new vote will NOT count.  Voting to 'No Lynch' is allowed.

"Days" will last for 2 RL days.  Nights will last 24 hours or until all night roles have been sent to me.  The deadline will be posted regularly and I retain the ability to hurry the deadline for inactivity or extend the deadline if enough request it.  Note that any deadline that falls on a weekend will be pushed back to the following Monday.  Note that you may request to extend or shorten the day.

Upon deadline, the player with the most votes will be lynched.  If there is a tie, there will be no lynch. Once dead, you may not speak or PM anyone about the game, living or otherwise.  A Dead chat will be made available.

Mafia will be given their own Chat to speak to one another once roles have been sent.

Bolded sentences can be used to catch my attention.  Italics used by the host as story text, or "flavor" as they call it, and is just there to be interesting.  Note you are free to apply flavor as you wish.  Note that the flavor has nothing to do with the actual gameplay and can be ignored if desired.

Do NOT quote my PM text and do NOT edit your posts (you can double post if you need to)

Lastly any suggestion of breaking a rule in the main chat will be treated as the rule already broken.  If you have any questions or wish to make sure of the legality of an action, PM me first.

You can, of course, ask any questions you may have.

These are the Roles that may appear in the game:

Townsperson: The basic town role. Your goal is to help the town lynch all of the mafia players. You win as long as the town wins.

Mafia: The basic antagonist role. You and the other Mafia players work together to kill off the townspeople. During the day, you pretend to be normal townspeople and voting on who is to be lynched. During the night, you will tell me the name of the player you wish to kill along with which of you will kill them. You win once you have greater than or equal to the number of town aligned players.

Mafia Roleblocker: Similar to the mafia.  However, in nights when you are not the one assigned to kill, you may choose one person for yourself.  The person you choose will be unable to perform their night action.  Note that the Doctor will not know if they have been blocked, but the Cop will know.  You will not be informed if you had blocked an actual action.

Mafia Godfather:  Similar to the mafia.  However, when investigated by the cop, they will show up as an innocent townsperson.

Cop: An honest cop, he may choose one player each night to investigate. He will then learn if that player is Mafia or Town.

Doctor: The doctor may choose one player each night to protect from the mafia's night kill.  Note that neither you nor the mafia will know if the kill had been stopped by your action.

Welcome to Bring Your Own Role Mafia: Choices edition.

The majority of the premise is the same as before:  you think up a name and I'll turn it into a role.  For this version, you may send any links you wish to show but you may not write anything in your PM other than the name itself and any provided links.  Although I reserve the right to interpret the role as I wish, I will work to try to maintain some link between the reference and the role.

Though if I miss the mark 100%, don't fuss.

The twist comes in the quirks.  A list of 'quirks' has be provided below.  Each phrase relates to a specific quirk. Along with sending your role, you may request as many or as few of the quirks to be added to the game as you wish.  Any quirk that is accepted by at least half the town will go in: all others will not.  Further, you may choose one rule that you DO NOT want to give it a 'negative vote' thus making it harder for it to be accepted.

Note that the rules are grouped up in categories ranging from 'mild' to 'game breaking'.  Thus although you may not know what the quirk is, you will have some idea on how it will affect the game.

Lastly, all chosen quirks will be explained in full once the game starts.

Spoiler: The quirks in full (click to show/hide)

Thread is now open for signups and for quirk discussion (that is, for anyone that wishes to discuss about what each quirk does).  Requires a minimum of 9 players though more is acceptable (if it gets large, I'll make sure it'll stay...interesting)

The game will not start until after BYOR 3 ends.

Rank of C or above can join without question.  D or lower will need to ask nicely and really REALLY think on whether they can keep active all the way through. Do note that I DO reserve the right to tailor your role according to your rank.

Of course, Novice players (N ranks or those saying "What's a rank?") may join as they wish.

Mafia / Boot Camp Mafia: End
« on: February 10, 2010, 11:14:46 pm »
Have you ever been accused of being Too Townie?  So good at what you do that they don't believe you are real?

Have you played so well that mafia focus on killing you in every game because you are too much of a risk?

This is not the game for you.

This game is for the rest.  If you are always marked as 'scummy', or constantly getting lynched.  If you aren't even sure WHAT being 'town' means.  If you just need a brush up in playing.  If you'd rather have experts helping your play rather than tearing you down in game.

Or if you're below Rank A and found an interest in the possibility of raising your rank.

If any of those apply, then this game is for you.  While winning is always important, the true goal here is to learn about and practice pro-town play.

Setup and rules:

The game is in the near-mountainous setting: 6 townies, 1 doctor, 1 mafioso, 1 mafia roleblocker.

Along with this, mentors will be requested.  Each player will be given one mentor, though a mentor can have multiple trainees.  The mentor will NOT be told your alignment or role and they should not focus on figuring it out (if it puts you to mind of a Defensive Lawyer, then you get a cookie).  No matter what alignment you are, your day game should be focusing on being 'town'.

During the day, the mentors cannot PM the trainees but may talk to them directly in the main chat.  At night, the mentors/trainee MUST talk to each other via PM.  If they request, a quicktopic can be made for them, but if so the night-only requirement still stands.

Additional rules:

Other than nightly PM discussions with your mentor, the ONLY ones who can PM each other is the mafia.  Note that all PMs must have me as one of the recipients.

Votes will have a quirk attached:  Every 24 hours, you MUST vote for someone AND declare your reason for voting for them.  After 24 hours, the votes will be wiped and you MUST vote again.  Note that both vote and reason is the mark of your attendance: you are considered not active without a vote and reason.

'Acceptable' reasons will start off very lax (even 'nonsense' reasons will count) but as the game goes on, better reasons will be required.  The host gets final say on this matter.  Note that it does not have to be correct or true even on the last day, but it needs to show you are thinking behind your actions.

Votes must be in Red.  Unvotes are highly suggested but not required.

The game will run under Deadlines with requests to shorten or extend day considered.  Ties result in No lynch.

You may NOT quote any of your PM messages and you may NOT edit posts for any reason.

Questions about anything are HIGHLY suggested, including matters of game content (i.e. "Is that a scum tell?" or "Was I right in that attack?")  any question you wish to address to the Host/Mentors are to be placed in bold.

Lastly (and most important to some): Any Rank B or above player that can be perfectly active all game will receive an increase of rank of 1/3 of a rank (i.e. from B to B+) for each day you survive, with a maximum of one Full rank (From B to A).  Note that this means regular voting each day, at least one PM to your mentor at night (and more than a "I'm here!") and, if you're mafia, discussion on who to kill.

Players:
1. Jokerman-EXE
2. RedWarrior0
3. Eduren
4. Org
5. SirBayer
6. Archangel
7. Rysith
8. GlyphGryph

Mafia / Bellsounder Bastard Mod: The End Which Never Ends.
« on: January 11, 2010, 10:12:18 pm »
Bastard Mod: A game where the difficulty lies more in the rules than the players.

There will be no lying, no misdirections.  However, not everything will be made clear to you.  To win, you must Break the Game.  Fail to do so, and there's no way you'll win.

Standard rules:

Game will utilize a hammer/deadline hybrid.  A 48 deadline will be set: whoever has the most votes at the end will be lynched.  However, if, at any point, more than 50% of the town votes for the same person, the hammer will fall automatically on that person.  Note that there IS NO TRICK here: a hammer-based lynch works the same as a deadline-based lynch.

Votes will be in Red  Unvotes will be highly recommended but not required.

PMs are disabled.

Talking about your PM text will not be allowed.

A Rank will be required to join  (sidenote: A- is considered 'A' if you ever wondered).  ''

Special rules:
No one among you seems to understand why you are here or what you should be doing.

5 Bell can be seen attached to the ceiling.  None of them are active.  Somehow, you get the feeling that no matter what, the bells must. not. ring!

Mafia / Christmas Mafia: End - final gift
« on: December 22, 2009, 01:55:35 am »
Twas the day before christmas and all throughout the mall,
Many mall Santas were working , it's their first job since last fall.
Their rent checks were sent post-dated with care,
In the hopes that their bonuses soon would be there.

When out in the main hall there arose such a rumor
"They say the real Santa's here," they say with such humor

As they fight the guards with wet angry cats
"Santa..what next the Grinch?" you say as you fix up your hat.

But still..you ponder it a little..or maybe a lot
perhaps you'll send a letter..or a few, why not?.

Basic rules:

Votes are in Red.  Unvotes not required, but highly recommended.

PMs Not allowed, excluding the Santa Letter.

Quoting the PM is not Allowed.

48 hour days, 24 hour nights.  Weekends and holidays will not count.  Deadline in effect.  Extensions will be offered 24 hours before deadline.  Day Endings will be offered if over 50% of the town votes on the same target.

Bold is used to contact me.

Special rules:

Spoiler: Christmas Eve (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: The Letter (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: the Grinch (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Scrooge (click to show/hide)

Final notes:

-This is NOT a Bastard Mod.  There are no lies and nothing about the game is hidden.  All roles work as advertised.

- Role Cops will see 'Mall Santa' to everyone that has no role or only have 1-shot skills, including Santa and the Helper.  If the person has a role that will be the role they see.  Grinches who have stolen roles will prioritize first to the role Santa gave them then to the first role they stole.

- Cops will see Scrooge as follows: Pro-town as 'town', Mafia ally as 'mafia' and Survivor/SK as 'neutral'

Mafia / Christmas Mafia - Discussion thread
« on: December 11, 2009, 11:52:36 am »
As written in the Threshold Thread:

Roles:
Santa
Mall Santas
Grinche
Ebenezer Scrooge

Local: a congregation among Mall Santas before Christmas turns into an uproar due to rumors of the real Santa among the group.  Real Santa?  But he doesn't exist!  What's next, the Grinch comes over to try to steal Christmas?

Mall Santa:  no power townie role, but is given a role that they 'want' to be i.e.

You are a Mall Santa.  Your biggest wish is to become a Doctor

May send a letter(PM) to any person asking Santa for that present.

(real) Santa

In two days, you make your grand trip to give gifts to everyone, but you don't know who is naughty or nice and even if you knew, you don't know what they really want.

First off, the N/N list.  Use your two days to learn about the others.  Then, on Christmas Night, you will make a list to mark who you think is naughty or nice.  Naughty people get coal (nothing) while Nice people get a present.

As far as what gifts to give, the others are sending letters around trying to reach you.  If you receive one you will give that person the give (role) they wish for.  Everyone else will be given a generic random one-shot gift.

Though try not to die.  If you do, everyone will morn you for the following day.  If you die before you can finish your trip, well, then no one will be given anything!

Note that the # of 'santas' will equal the # of mafia.  More than one 'santa' will have appropriate names (Santa's Helper, Ms.Clause, ext) but will work identically to Santa.  Note that the Santa that has your letter must be alive to deliver your present, and that reaching more than one santa does nothing special.

Grinch (may be more than one)

The mafia (group).  At night you can kill a player.  Along with that, you learned that the real Santa is out there giving gifts and the others are trying to send Letters out.  Go ahead and join in.  You also have your own wished-for role after all.  Maybe the fool will give you something.

But what if someone gives YOU a letter, thinking you're Santa.  Well , JOY!  You have two options:

- you can Watch and see what Santa gives them or
- you can Steal, thus taking whatever Santa gives and claiming it for yourself.

You get to use everything you Steal ON TOP OF YOUR MAFIAKILL (even all at once), but be wary: the poor sap won't see you but will know their gift was stolen, and may figure out who took it.

(yes, Steal Vig, and boom, double kills.)

Note that Santa-given powers work normally: aka. you can't use it on top of of the mafiakill

Also note that if more than one Grinch has a letter, they will have to decide who will make use of it.

Scrooge

You hate this Christmas mess but that ghost of Jacob Marley told you to come here.  He said specifically "Write at least one letter a day, but no more than two.  After the second day, another Ghost will appear to guide you."

You don't like ghosts but you don't like angry ghosts so you will follow.  Send one or two letters.  Why?  You dare annoy a ghost with questions?  BAH!

After two days, this may occur:

If only Mall Santas receive your letters, nothing will occur.  BAH!  Who cares about all this.  Well, the killings are something to care about.  So long as you Survive, that's all that matters. (Survivor)

If Santa receives a letter, the Ghost of Christmas Future will visit you.  Oh.. no.. you don't want it to end like this.  You can change!  You'll be good!  You'll even help Santa and the Mall workers save Christmas!  (pro-Town)

If Grinch receives a letter, the Ghost of Christmas Past will visit you.  Why, now you remember why you hated all this stuff in the first place.  Nevermind not caring, you wish Christmas ended RIGHT NOW!  Oh...you found someone who wants to help (join Mafia)

If Santa AND Grinch receive a letter, the Ghost of Christmas Present will visit you.  What's this?  This isn't about me.. this is showing what Christmas has really become, a hive of lowlifes killing each other in malls just to pick up a worthless overpriced toy for a spoiled brat!  Yes, you hated the whole Christmas thing but this..this is too much even for you.  Well, best way to solve it is to get rid of it all.  OF EVERYTHING! (SK.  Obtains a kill and gift if Santa deems him Nice.)

That's the roles.  You have a third party that may become a Survivor, Townie, Mafia, or SK.  You have a Santa that needs to decide who should get a gift or not (thus trying to give to townies and not give to scum).  You have a town that's trying to find Santa so they can get a permanent role without sending a letter to the mafia, and you have a mafia that wants letters so they can either play it safe and learn of what role people have or risk it and steal the role.

The role stealing is a gamble.  If I sent a letter to ONE person and found that I didn't get a gift (not even coal) then I know who one of the mafia is.  If I sent the letter out to many though, well.. then I'm not sure.  Still, being able to inspect one person (why care about being a cop?  Scrooge hunting) while roleblocking another WHILE KILLING...but the risk!  Watching is much safer.

The scrooge bit I like since it is somewhat chaotic.  :D

Btw, this wouldn't be a bastard so ALL of these rules will be known at the start.  The matter is the players trying to read each other and, thus, figure out who to send the letter to/who to gift to.  For Scrooge, it's reading AND deciding who they want to try to be.

Note: the letter is a standard letter, so no embellishing:

----

Dear Santa,

I have been a very good scumhunter this year.  Please send me what I want for Christmas.  I promise it will be very helpful.

Thank you.

Mafia / The Attendance Ranking Board (Beta), Season 0
« on: December 10, 2009, 10:05:30 am »
As noted in the Karma thread, the old Karma Board is retired.  Instead, it will be replaced by the Attendance Ranking Board.  This thread is to discuss it and, later, host it.

What is it?
This is a rating on the players of Bay 12 and their attendance.

So we're penalized every time we can't finish a game?  I have life!
It's not about always completing a game.  It's about how you leave, along with how often you leave, and how you play in games you do complete will make a difference.

So how does it work?
Each quarter, the games that are played are tracked for attendance issues: negatives such as repeated prodding, frequent substitutions, and flaking (not playing completely without any warning) or positives, such as good activity and willingness to substitute.  Those are then compiled into a Grade (which should make some of the folks still in school groan a little).

How Permanent are these grades?
Each grade is tracked for the season.  When a new season occurs, the grades are reset.  Your grade for last season and the current season are listed together.  Beyond that, each season's thread will be locked and stored so that people can dig them up if it is that important.

Overall, though, it is mostly a matter of how you did the past 6 months.

What are the grades and what do they mean?

First, the standard ones:

A+ Rank : Active and Self-motivated. 1 prod max per quarter, No Substitutions and has subbed in a game

A Rank : Solidly Reliable.  1 prod max per quarter, No needed Substitutions

B + Rank : Reliable. 1 prod max per quarter, 2 or less Substitutions

B Rank : Suitably Reliable. 3 prods max per quarter, no more than 1 prod per game.  Substitutes by request only - 2 max

C Rank : Fickle. Only 1 of these: 3+ prods in a quarter / more than 1 prod in a game / more than 2 requested Subs

D Rank : Unreliable. Two or more of these: +3 prods in  a quarter / more than 1 prod in a game / more than 2 sub requests.

E Rank : Flaker. 1 or more forced Substitutions

With each rank there is also a Minus (i.e. A-).  If you performed an act that warrants a loss of rank but have a suitable reason for it (i.e. a sudden vacation takes you away from 3 games) then you will retain your rank with a Minus.  Special situations can warrant rank changes as well.

Special Ranks.

N Rank : Novice.  Those that have played less than 5 games and have not done anything to earn a D or lower.  Should be deemed as Reliable.

S Rank : A specialized rank set above A rank.  Marked for Active playing even in the face of horrible situations.  When the game falls nearly dead, they are the ones still trying to keep things active.  If a game of just these players is run, not a HINT of a prod should appear.  If they are silent, they are either locked away from a computer, or scum talking up the Mafia Chat instead.

F Rank : A specialized rank of Failure.  Only for extreme cases, such as horrible rule violation or flat out real attempts to ruin games.

Note that, on top of the ranks, will be notes to help explain the rank.

So how are these ranks used?
Hosts are allowed to filter games based on attendance, such as allow C Rank or above.  It will be the host's decision on what their game can handle.

So we're just going to see S Rank Only games now?
We shouldn't.  Most players will be in A, B, or C rank and those people will be reliable for just about any game.  D rank and below may be a major issue, however, but you need to have regularly joined games you couldn't keep up with to do that.

To note:  An N rank can join any game that allows up to A ranks unless the host says specifically otherwise.

So HOW does one become an S Rank?
The process for becoming an S rank is as follows:

1. Become an A- rank or above for 2 full seasons.
2. Become Nominated by 3 separate players, along with 1 host of one of your games.

Note: no more than one S rank may be among the nominators.

3. Have more Yeys than Neys in a vote among the current S Ranks

Note that this will be modified if there are no S ranks currently in existance.

Once an S rank, you retain the rank even through resets until you perform actions that will result in you dropping to B or lower rank in any season.

What are these Grades NOT used for?

-Determining Skill Level (A ranks may be terrible players and beaten regularly by a C rank.  The A rank is just around more often)
-Elitism (no, you don't need to let that S rank badmouth you)
-Punishment for 'bad play' (excluding rule violations)
-establishing a Good Old Boy system (The ranks are made Objectively, with the exception of the S rank which can still be lost in a heartbeat due to the objective parts of the rule)
