DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Why are necromancers the way they are

Literally just had one ruin my entire fortress because he got scared by a giant buzzard then came close to my outdoor refuse area. If necromancers can't control themselves why aren't they hostile? It's like having someone come to a grocery store then start lighting fires for no reason then running back in to light more fires. Is there a way i can disable them? I know i can get migrant necromancers and the thought that they can just doom spiral my fortress because they can't stop themselves from raising undead kinda makes me not want to play.

Vampires i can understand but something that spawns non stop hostile zombies for literally no reason at all sounds insane.

I continually want to dig into mountains near me and dont see a problem with making a giant underground complex even though i know it must be unfeasible if they havent done it already haha but DF has convinced me its not only possible its profitable. I was watching Two towers and when the elves were leaving the first thing that came to my mind was, 'i hope some of them die here so we get elf bones cause once their gone no more elf bones'.

So i live in hawaii--could i dig into a mountain here? what would i find? i mean there must be a chance that i could fine metal or gems.

I always wanted to allow elephants as pets and edit general costs of creatures available on embark but last few times i've done it... horrible horrible things have happened haha. I thought it was as simple as putting the [domestic] tag but adding that to elephants causes boiling leather to randomly appear and humanoid meat to be available on embark.

So after finishing my latest project(giant hole with waterfall down the center and fortress build into the walls) i realized half way through it, what the hell do these dwarves live for? I broke my back to encrust their surroundings in finery and made sure there was masterful meals and booze on hand but what did they do for and with it? I eventually realized dwarves were just naturally greedy but still i now want to punish them!

A fortress with no finery, no spoiling and no booze.

The rules:

-No booze besides wine/beer(one or the other you can decide) but it must be locked away and only distributed on holidays or to dwarves about to give their lives to defend the fortress.
-Nothing above average quality allowed, nothing must distract them from repenting their sinful ways!
-All dwarves must be required to take up a trade skill to work off their debt to society, offer all trade goods after trading for what you need.
-Personal rooms are up to you, your choice of bare rock cells or beds.
-The hammer is armoks will in this world and he has come to punish the sinful, nobles are to be attracted to the fortress so they can administer armoks will with their demands.
-Punishment is the theme so lots of cruel jails, chains in the hot sun for cave adapted dwarves, raised chains surrounded by wild animals and such.


I started one of these but it ended pretty damn fast with no booze haha i suggest you compartmentalize your fortress ASAP as tantrum spirals are deadly. I found it was very challenging to make proper punishment, i made sure the miners and manual labor dwarves took turns as fortress guard so they were very strong to deal with angry dwarves hehe.

So i've gone the way of no traps and an army instead, its great fun but holy crap does it get boring! right now i sit there apon my huge stockpiles with everyone idling and my army covered in adamantine just waiting for a damn siege or anything to break the boredom. When a siege comes i send my 12 bowmen to the top of my 5 story tower of flying death and get my 20 hammer champions waiting to pour down the stairwell if any get through- they usually dont even make it to the damn entrance due to my marksmen slaughtering them.

So, i was thinking- man it would be friggin awesome if there was like antmen swarms or something like sieges but it happened constantly- and yes i did piss off the elves and the gobbos already started a war with the humans but they each sent one siege was repulsed then never came back. I'm begging you, give me demon hordes, give me ratmen hordes, give me zombie hordes! PLEASE GOD KILL MY FORTRESS! I dont want to do anything deliberately stupid like opening my walls or something i want a challenge not to just slaughter my dwarves, i want to fight an epic battle lose half my population then build up for it all over again.

I tried to attract more gobbos by turning alot of stone into adamantine with Dtil then paved my entire fortress with it and all my doors/buckets/barrels/bins while turning more stone into diamonds and encrusting everything yet this still doesnt change the fact that gobbos are a finite resource:(. I'm happy with all the current DF resources and i dont want more friggin useless caravans to build up huge stockpiles of booze/seeds/wood so mods like civ forge arent what i'm looking for(please document your new resources and what they can do), shit i just want numerous(endlessly renewbable) monsters to try and kill my dwarves is that to much to ask?

DF Modding / Can you create magma from nothing?

I've found a ton of wonderful fortress locations and with vein helper from dtil i can always ensure that perfect fortress location always has what it needs but 2 things i really miss in perfect maps are magma/water. I can make metal and gems via vein helper is it possible to make magma and water from nothing(no magma on the map to begin with)?. I couldent find any existing threads about this via search so i figured someone might have a premade tool to create magma and water.

I always try to look for lag free maps so magma pools and underwater rivers are always the first thing i look for but most of the time i have to settle for a brook with multiple magma pipes which is really annoying and creates excess lag. If i could find that dream location and make my own magma/water pool then i'll be friggin set(magma pipe on a glacier would be so dreamy).

Out of everything in DF pumps are the worst to learn- first they use wood HORRIBLE HORRIBLE WOOD, second they need MECHANICS! So you now a static limited resource thats never fun to manage depending on your forts location, and then you have a profession thats always secondary. So you build your first pump(and all its assorted unique useless-outside-pumping materials) wheee!, wow those are some vague ass charts!.... this doesnt go up Z levels?! So to actually get up Z levels you now need A POWER PLANT!

Right now your entire plan has been shot to hell and thats just with the pump because you now need to make room for this huge useless pump AND MULTIPLE PUMPS! Adding the power plant introduces fun things like WATER WHEELS, WIND MILLS, GEAR BOXES, AXLES! What resources and professions do these take up? OH WHY THE SAME AS PUMPS!

You've already scrapped your pump idea 5x over because its just retarded and the amount of ITS FUN TO LOSE! you have to go through makes it truly  NOT FUN TO LOSE! why? because there was no room for mistakes and your not going to learn ever because its to friggin outrageous to get the fucker working.

We already have levers that magically connect to doors and traps/pressure plates why do we need magical stick of power(axle) to automate things? we could always just use more mechanisms to simulate horrible horrible axles. If we build giant screw pumps why cant we build them in a giant tube to pump water up multiple levels? instead we have to build giant stacks of pumps which isent realistic and is hugely wasteful. I honestly dont know why this wasent done before because no matter how patient you are pumps and power plants in current form are retarded and wasteful- do you want to build giant axle connections with associated power plants to open doors? yeah i dont want to do that with pumps and power plants.

When i see a dwarf mechanic i think of a dwarf who knows alot about what hes doing- why must you demand i(no friggin clue) design this complex machine? I tell the mechanic, hey you i want to pump water up 4 Z levels then have it cascade through the garden tower, i already got everything else built i just need pumps! So the dwarf tells me, i need these items and how are you going to power it? Wow that sounds alot easier and more realistic then some half ass crazy thing that clearly wont work(you wont know until its finished) which we have to deal with atm.

Fuck your pumps, can we please change them? i'm going to fucking wall off and redirect my brook cause thats faster then your stupid ass pumps.

So one dropped in the moat, hes chilling 7/7 water while my dwarve form a giant interupt wheel outside WHEEEEEEEE LETS GET NOTHING DONE FOR A WHOLE SEASON! Do only legendary dwarves drown? cause i cant tell you how many of those have yet this human is totally cool with water and i cant shoot him either.

This may be related to magma depth its 4/7 and i'm running mikes tileset but i dont even have the option. I thought it might fix itself after season change but it hasent- i also found the magma pool useing reveal.exe could that be it? This fortress is beautiful(and i got the embark editor working) but this is really pissing me off hehe, i'll try un-revealing it then see if it works.

Dear god now on my 12th gobbo siege and their numbers are growing... as are my weapon trap layers BUT STILL! i have over 50 sitting inside a single friggin glass cage waiting to either be thrown into the magma(wrestlers/bowmen) or thrown into the weapon traps(things with useful items) AND NOT A SINGLE FRIGGIN MERCHANT OR IMMIGRANT WAVE! I pretty much put bone on every single thing and the bone bolts are endless ENDLESS! If i just had some friggin gobbo slaves i could get them to work my farms so i can finish my waterfall tower.

I'm sorry i just had to post that last wave was over 6 groups of 15-20 gobbos and they nearly made it through- but i struck up on the idea of slavery while cleaning up the mess that is my main entrance hoping for merchants and there it was in the planned features DAMN! no 6 paragraphs of excited jabber for me! I really hope their not more trouble then their worth- sure i could see if you have only 50 dwarves and 150 gobbo slaves they would rise up but as long as you had a less then a 4-1 ratio you shouldent have to worry!(hell maybe even have second generation who dont hate dwarves?). I would love to lock them up in a huge farming room with some beds and a well- one entrance with multiple chained dogs around the only door in and out with some hammerlords making the rounds with multiple wardogs hehe.

Think of the food production! basically pure farmers that have no other tasks but to plant and gather food haha have some magma/water valves so if they riot lock your 3 door lock system and flood the bastards! This game is so friggin awesome haha my every dream is now about my current fortress and i'm laughing all day thinking about DF which is insanely hard to explain and showing someone is entirely out of the question. So! slavery slavery NOW! I WANT TO OPPRESS SOMEONE!

I had a pretty sweet fort, apon a volcano with everything i could ever want... except of course for raw resources. Sure i had more obsidian then i knew what to do with and the steel quality swords ensured i got off the crook that was metal ore but it also required wood which eventually runs out or attracts friggin gobbos to kill your wood cutters.

We already have stone crafts and catapults and theres bone and wood for bolts/decoration but as my fortress progressed i notice one resource that i dident have to balance at all, stone. Why cant i make stone maces/spears/bolts/axes/throwing spears? I highly doubt a wooden bed is straight wood why cant i make stone beds? why is it possible to make a bin out of everything but stone/glass? Instead of sitting there without the needed end products you should be able to make due with inferior materials, sure the wooden bed is nicer but a stone bed is better then the floor!

If i can make a stone earring and doll why cant i make a stone throwing spear or a stone barrel? they would take longer to make and not be as effective(as well as being heavier in terms of bins/barrels) but stone should be your bread and butter with other materials being luxury items. You should be able to choose between a pure stone item and one mixed with wood so a stone axe will still require a wooden handle but you could make a stone mace purely from stone same with bolts and Xbows- a crossbow can shoot a stone bolt easily hell technically ballista from the roman era is the crossbows grandfather and it shot stone. I dont know what they use for the string but imagine this a 6mm stone shaft 3 feet long with a rough tip being propelled 20mph- you arent going to walk away from that and dwarves arent known for they preference for light materials a stone Xbow with a stone buckler would complete your miltia.

I'm tired of sitting on 10 magical dwarves that can make wonders out of stone yet i cant make a simple stone club to ensure everyone is armed when the gobbos come a-knocking. Stone weapons would also rock for sparring because its heavier and it could be blunt so you would strengthen your dwarves while also only bruising them!

Yeah my computers weird and i'm tired of mining out entire Z levels- i got tweaks thing but it doesnt work it its pissing me off mightily(some stupid hash not found) and i tryed the search feature but its just pages and pages of tweak(which at its merest mention now pisses me off). Is there a simple way of making this thing work without having to edit code?
