Haven't played in a long time, does the top of a magma tube still rise and fall?

DF Gameplay Questions / Can't assign tomb to recently killed dwarf
« on: August 08, 2019, 03:32:43 pm »
I'm having trouble understanding whether there's some bug, or if something else is going on.
I have two dead dwarves, one killed a while ago by a troglodyte, and another who went berserk then bled to death after being beaten by the militia.

I can assign a tomb to the former dwarf, but not to the latter (does not show up in the assignment menu)

Any idea what's going on here?

thanks

When I saw the names that had been generated for this fort, I knew I had to write it up.  I hope you enjoy the story of Mothdast Omshit and Ugogmomuz.

Date: 1 Granite, 301   Rakust Bolttours
There has been nothing noteworthy to report for the last week.  Morale has not improved, and the snow that's been increasingly falling as we've gained elevation has not improved anything.  What little of the rocks in the streambed we can see give hopes that there are rich mineral deposits in these hills, although with all the ice we cannot get a good reading.  The grumbling of these fools is really wearing me thin.  I try to remind them that I've managed to prevent any casualties on our journey, we haven't had to melt water for drink, and no one's lost their toes, but they just grumble all the same.
Date: 10 Granite, 301   Obok Sunbell
Today I found a large nugget of copper just downstream from a dry canyon leading down from one of the higher foothills.  After much protest from Rakust who was worried about exposure once we left the shelter of the forested area, we all had a vote, and she was overruled.  Thank Domas, I am so fed up with hearing how her great leadership had saved all our lives.

Yesterday after Obok found a very nice copper nugget, I decided we should make a detour to examine an arroyo that leads down from a lesser peak marked on my map as Banecrypts.  What a strange name.  Anyway, this bane has turned into a boon!  There was nothing particularly exciting geologically, and sadly no more copper, but we have just crested the lip of the canyon and were greeted with a most welcome odor that we have not smelled since leaving the mountainhome.  Ah, nothing says home like brimstone!  We didn't even have to hold a vote.  The look on everyone's faces was unanimous.  Tomorrow we will break camp for the last time.
Date: 12 Granite, 301   Official minutes of the Onslaught of Suffering
It has been adopted that we will establish our fortress here in light of the presence of promising mineral deposits, beneficial flora, and Indication of volcanism in the area.
As such I turn over leadership of the expedition to Bomrek Ivorypost, noting our adequate supplies, general good health, and the good time we have made on our journey.
I also note the dangers of the area, particularly the giant eagles that frequent this area and the goblin patrols we passed some weeks past, and urge that appropriate defenses are constructed forthwith.
I spotted some mountain goats which will make a nice change from the salted fish we brought with us.  I will harvest them, and then set about gathering some wood.
Glory to Mothdast Omshit! and to Nelzurgeshud!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Problem with my fountain
« on: January 25, 2009, 06:02:59 pm »
I have a problem, and I hope you guys have a solution for me.  I have just finished construction of my awesome fountain, which pours from water into the center of my lava tube, creating great gouts of mist and steam, and hopefully soon happy thoughts in all the dwarves who have rooms lining the neck of the lava tube with windows overlooking the spectacle.

The problem is that the water hitting the exposed magma creates blocks of obsidian, which promptly sink, pausing the game with the dire warning "A portion of the cavern has collapsed."

Is it possible to turn this warning off?

DF Bug Reports / [40d] Adventure mode issue with vacationing populace
« on: September 29, 2008, 05:12:49 pm »
It seems that much of the populace of my starting dwarf town has gone on vacation  in the next town over...

[Edit: upon further investigation there's nothing wrong with the water in the river.  it's just the confluence of two rivers, and not being able to see the far bank in the dark, it looked wrong.]

http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=577

They won't talk to me because they're not at home, but they don't seem to show any interest in going home either.  Even crazier, this isn't a dwarf town, it's a human town.  And the first time I showed up, there were no humans.  And all the buildings have holes in them.  And the river looks like it's overflowing its bank.

Here's what happened:  I got quests from the Mayor and from the Queen (Yay!  first time I've played an adventurer and they didn't just tell me they had no need for me.)  Anyway, I complete the quests, and return home, but I can't find the mayor or the Queen.  Not where they were when I got the quests.  I search the entire fortress (Suprisingly uninteresting...) nowhere.  By this time I am hungry and thirsty, so I travel and come back.  Search the entire area around the fortress.  Not there either.  Travel again, and search the fortress.  This time I am very rigorous and search the grounds as well.  Noone, and there are not very many dwarves either.

So anyway, I go learn to swim, kill some wolves etc.  Then I decide to try questing again at a human town.  That's weird, there are tons of dwarves shooting fish in the river.  Oh wait, these dwarves are all from my home town.  And the Queen's there too.

I know something similar was posted on v. 33, but It seemed that this was different, because I doubt the dwarves had been killed.  Also it seems like there are a lot of issues with this particular area (see the river and the buildings with holes) so maybe that's it.

My adventurer is saved right next to the Mayor, who is frantically chasing a horse.  The weird flow effects are just west of where I'm standing.  You can't miss the buildings, and the queen's around there somewhere.

If you fix this bug, maybe keep the idea of Holidays.  I love the idea of a bunch of drunk dwarves descending on the human town like German tourists, and having a big noisy party on the banks of the river, shooting any fish that happen to swim by.  The mayor chasing terrified livestock just completes the image.  I can just see him with his hat on crooked and stumpy legs flying...  If the nobles were easier to find the rest of the time, this wouldn't be that much of an inconvenience either.

Cheers!

DF Gameplay Questions / What's going on? (how to tell?)
« on: September 17, 2008, 07:11:21 pm »
So what's the best way to tell what's going on in my dwarf fortress?  I just had my first siege, and I was looking forward to watching what happened as my dwarves kicked some goblin @$$.  Here:s how the battle went: goblins show up, I activate my nearby dwarves and step through in slow motion... goblin and dwarf standing next to each other...check wounds on both - nothing...goblin dead.  Is there a way to see what's going on?  I know each parry, each knocked out goblin tooth is being tracked by the game, but I can't see it, or at least I don't know how.  Any ideas?
