DF Modding / Creature help

Hello, I've recently tried my hand at modding and was hoping to get some help with my attempt at making magma sources more fun.
I made some fire hippos but for some reason they all die soon after I embark.
I followed one around before it died and I noticed it was drowning.
Even after I added the [NO_BREATHE] tag I still see this happening and they only seem to survive for a minute until they die.
The fire hippos do not catch fire (nor do their corpses).
I haven't been able to solve this problem so I've come to the forums now to ask for help from more experienced modders.

I made a 2d dwarf out of stone. Not much work but I felt like sharing it.

DF Gameplay Questions / Frozen windmill

How can I get a windmill to work. It currently says that the windmill is frozen here. I am in a freezing biome and no machine part is encased in ice. Does anyone know how I can get this to work?
(FYI- I'm pumping magma not water)
EDIT:Nothing was submerged in magma so it wasn't necessary to have magma safe materials.
Problem solved-I replaced every component in the set up and something there did the trick, still not completely sure what it was that was affected but I'll lock this thread anyways.

a fort I made using a compact design that I wanted to share. It is 30 dwarfs strong and a couple of years in the making. (I don't really like having huge populations)

How would I go about making an (artificial) active volcano, I see the term used a lot but I'm unsure as to what constitutes an active volcano.
Is it just a built vertical tube where lava rises or is it more than that?

In the past I've tried chaining animals at my entrance so to spot kobolds and such but whenever I tried this there would always be dwarves hanging around the chain whenever they are on break or have nothing else to do. I noticed this happening even when I had both a designated meeting area and a masterwork statue garden.
Normally this isn't much of a problem but once I start getting sieged then I find myself having to remove the chains or else risk losing a boatload of dwarves every season and stationing my military there kind of defeats the purpose of having animals to spot attacks...
So does anyone know how I can keep my dwarves away from the chains?
