DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Elven Lightweavers?
« on: April 16, 2016, 08:59:57 am »
Apparently Elves can weave light?

"This is a grown motes of light vado.  It is made from motes of light cloth.  The bellows is made from pig tail.  The bag is made from motes of light.  The melody pipe is made from orange wood.  The drone pipe is made from candlenut.  The object is adorned with hanging rings of cashew wood."

The description then goes on to describe the musical instrument.

Basic Value: 24050

I don't use any mods.  I do use DT for 42.06.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Adamantine and Exports
« on: January 29, 2016, 03:46:49 pm »
In my first year, I discovered a spike of adamantine which opened into the HFS.  I quickly sealed the breach, resulting in a largish quantity of mined adamantine and zero hazard.

According to my understanding of the game over the past ten or so years, that should have resulted in the king immigrating with his entourage.  That has not happened.  However, no matter how much I trade, my Exported Wealth remains zero and I have not been offered the chance to become a barony.  While I am enjoying being able to continue ordering what I desire from the Mountainhome, it is a little bit of a disappointment not to be able to use the nice quarters I had outfitted for my nobles.

Is this a known issue?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / How Do I Get More Babies Born?
« on: January 29, 2016, 10:39:01 am »
I have a 42.05 fortress in its fifth year.

The relevant lines in d_init.txt are as follows.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I have four children in my fortress, and two married couples.

Two children arrived with their father.  No mother (or wife) is listed.
One child arrived with a married couple.  Its sibling was born during their first year in the fortress.
A second married couple remain childless.

Both married couples are fully heterosexual, and show up as "quite content" in DT.  They both have their own bedroom with a masterpiece bed.  There is plenty of good booze and prepared meals.  There is a functional tavern where they have been entertained.

Yet there are no more babies.

What am I missing?

What is the significance of "Watch Dance" in green versus "Watch Dance!" in magenta, on the (g)eneral screen of (v)iewing a Dwarf?

In case you, as I was, were mind-boggled by the though of leather made from fish or other fragile skins, here is the real-life thing.

General Discussion / Dry Cell Battery Rechargers (Real-Life)
« on: January 03, 2013, 03:39:01 pm »
Having recently come into some spending money, I decided to revisit rechargable batteries. My last experience with them was in the mid-1970s. At that time they were expensive, short-lived, slow-charging, and probably alkaline although they could have been lithium-ion. I figured 40 years should have improved the product, and it appears I am correct, but now there are so many options that I am finding the choice difficult.

It appears that what I should be buying are nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries. That much seems clear. The difficulty in choice comes in the charger. I am not looking for the cheapest option if it comes at the cost of utility and safety. We use mostly AA and D batteries, some AAA, a few 9V, and we have at least one item that uses C.

So, has anyone any experience with the various brands and models, that they would be willing to share?

General Discussion / Truth Is Like A Fortress
« on: November 03, 2012, 07:48:27 pm »
One of my hobbies is genealogy.  Today I ran across a family that could easily be from Dwarf Fortress.  I will omit the surname, but the location is colonial New York City.

A couple had the following children:

Maria b 1699 died young
Adolph b 1701 died age 31, never married
Johannes b 1703 died young
Johannes b 1704 died young
Abraham b 1705 nothing else known
Maria b 1709 died young
Hendrickus b 1712 died young
Hendrickus b 1713 died age 27, had one child
Johannes b 1716 died young
Johannes b 1719 died age 78, a wealthy merchant with three children, out-lived two wives

For the two children who lived and reproduced, this was the result.

Child of Hendrickus:
Henricus b 1736 nothing else known
Children of Johannus:
Henry b 1747 became merchant but nothing else known
Anna b 1748, married but husband only lived 5 years, no children listed
Mary b 1751, marriage of unknown duration, no children listed, inherited father's entire estate

The siblings of the man of the original couple were all multiplying like rabbits.  What was the problem here?  Did they eat their chicken raw?  Was there radon in the root cellar?  Did they not have a nice waterfall in the dining room?  Life imitates the game ...

General Discussion / Bye-Bye 1983
« on: October 30, 2012, 03:18:24 pm »
Today, as I was cleaning old magazines out of a closet full of manuals and reference books, I threw out my very first computer magazine.  It was a 1983 issue of Micro, which was devoted to the Radio Shack TRS-80.  I did not have a TRS-80, but I did have a Heathkit Z-80 CP/M computer which ran Microsoft BASIC.  The languages were close enough that I could make the TRS-80 BASIC programs work on the Heathkit.  The very first computer game that I ever typed in came from that magazine: D&D.  It was an ASCII dungeon-crawl game.  I also typed in a Lotus 1-2-3 knock-off spreadsheet and something Zork-like.  But D&D is the one I played all the time.  The man who later became my husband also played it on my computer, when he visited me back then.  A shared fond memory went out in the trash today.  *sniffle*

But I have Dwarf Fortress to console me.  *grin*

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Ding Dong The Wicked Witch Is Dead
« on: June 18, 2012, 09:06:43 am »
I just managed to kill the Human Law-Giver, who was an Amphibian Woman Fisherman Vampire.  I can certainly see how being amphibious would help a lot when fishing.  The Human civilization name is The Skinny Empires.  I guess everyone tried to stay thin to look less attractive to their king.  Anyway, I've always wanted to kill a Human ruler who arrived at my fortress in undead or demonic form but was never fast enough to activate anything for the purpose.  They seem to move very quickly.  This time I must have caught her with a raising drawbridge, as she wasn't visible when I went to check the area where I intended to trap her.  I thought she'd gotten through in time, but when the meeting never occurred I checked and she was deceased.  I was so elated that I forgot the Human caravan had arrived and failed to trade with them before they left.  I have erected a slab near the depot, commemorating the deliverance of the Human civilization from the so-called "Slayer of Humans" (actual kills: 372 Humans, 311 Goblins, and 1 Elf) in the year 280.  *grin*

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Stuck Wagon Challenge
« on: May 28, 2012, 12:59:25 pm »
I have Human caravan wagons trying to leave while Dwarven caravan wagons are trying to enter, through a 3-wide corridor attached to the edge of the map.  They aren't just moving slowly, they aren't moving at all.  It may be the two ramps leading down are too close together for the wagons travelling in two directions to pass over/under each other.  I haven't found anything I can dig out, or bridges I can lower, that fixes this.  Anyone want to have a try at at?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Tin Glaze 34.09
« on: May 20, 2012, 02:27:51 pm »
I realize this probably ought to go into the Modding section, but it may be of interest here.  Tin glazing uses cassiterite, the ore of tin, directly.  With the new drops this is A Bad Thing.  I considered modding the kiln reaction for glazing, but that doesn't actually give a reaction product.  It just improves an existing reagent.  It might work to put in 4 of those, but I decided to try instead to add the glaze line from cassiterite into tin metal.

When this line was added to the definition of tin inside inorganic_metal.txt for an existing fortress, it gave no errors and I am now glazing with tin bars.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Both Fat And Muscular
« on: May 07, 2012, 02:13:00 pm »
Has anyone managed to breed an animal that is both fat and muscular?  I have gigantic, fat turkeys and gigantic, muscular turkeys.  Since I have seen weak, skinny turkeys it seem like I should be able to get turkeys that are both fat and muscular.

DF Gameplay Questions / Rhetorical Magma-Safe Stone Question
« on: April 24, 2012, 05:32:44 pm »
So if granite isn't magma-safe, how is it containing a magma sea?  I don't mean what are the game mechanics - I mean what, conceptually, is this supposed to represent?  *puzzled look*
