Life Advice / Bad Credit, but I need a loan
« on: March 16, 2011, 03:06:19 pm »
So, a couple of months ago, I lost my job, and ended up losing my apartment.  A friend of mine's family has been kind enough to take me in while I try and get my life back together, but they live out in a rural village, and there are no job opportunities out here.  My desire is to get back into the city, so I've been applying for jobs in the city and setting my availability to the weekly time one of the people I live with goes into town, but none of the places I've applied at have responded.  I'm guessing this is because I'm only available for a narrow amount of time on weekdays and they'd prefer someone with open availability.  One of my friends back in the city is in need of a roommate.  My hope is to move in with her and use my new open availability to find a job, but I need some amount of money to stay afloat and pay rent while I search for a job there.  My savings account has already been emptied and my checking account has only the little bit of money that my friends have family have donated to me.  I've been denied unemployment due to my being fired for workplace misconduct, and I don't have a car or know how to drive.  So, my only option appears to be to take out a loan.

Unfortunately, my credit is really bad.  I'm in default on student loans, and thanks to my lack of a job, my credit card bill has gone unchecked for the past few months.  Does anyone have any advice on where to go to get a bad credit loan that won't literally bust my kneecaps?  Any other advice on where to get money quickly?

DF Modding / Race Diplomacy (And lack thereof)
« on: March 05, 2011, 02:28:46 pm »
Is there some trick to making certain races hostile to each other that I'm missing?  I have a playable "evil" race with ACCEPTABLE ethics across the board, but wars with the friendly races don't seem to start as often as I'd like.  I tried added ITEMTHIEF to the entity, which resulted in EVERY race including goblins being hostile to them.

Is there a more controllable way to make certain races hostile to certain other races without having to resort to removing the ability to speak?

DF Modding / Why do goblins have trolls?
« on: February 26, 2011, 09:46:02 pm »
What in the raws makes it so goblins automatically get pet trolls?  Trolls don't have any pet or domestic tags on them at all.  Is it hardcoded, or is there something I'm missing?

DF Modding / We don't need no stinkin' barrels
« on: February 25, 2011, 07:26:27 pm »
So, I created a reaction to brew eggs into egg nog, modeled after the mead reaction:

Code: [Select]
[REACTION:MAKE_EGGNOG]
[NAME:make egg nog]
[BUILDING:STILL:CUSTOM_E]
[REAGENT:A:1:EGG:NONE:NONE:NONE]
[UNROTTEN]
[HAS_MATERIAL_REACTION_PRODUCT:NOG_MAT]
[REAGENT:B:1:BARREL:NONE:NONE:NONE]
[EMPTY]
[DOES_NOT_ABSORB]
[PRESERVE_REAGENT]
[DOES_NOT_DETERMINE_PRODUCT_AMOUNT]
[PRODUCT:100:5:DRINK:NONE:GET_MATERIAL_FROM_REAGENT:A:NOG_MAT]
[PRODUCT_TO_CONTAINER:B]
[PRODUCT_DIMENSION:150]
[SKILL:BREWING]

For some odd reason, though, my brewer is brewing the egg nog, dumping it on the floor, and then just putting the barrel back into the furniture stockpile.  I know some people don't like egg nog, but this is a little ridiculous.  Is the PRODUCT_TO_CONTAINER tag just broken?  I've never actually tried brewing mead before.

Hi, all.  This is my first attempt at writing an LP of Dwarf Fortress.  I'm hoping to practice my writing skills as well as show off bug test my Candyland mod.  Most of my play experience is with 40d, so this fortress will be almost like a new experience for me.  My usual habit of dwarf naming is to name them after people I know, so I'm not taking any name auditions at this time, but My fort has more dwarves than I can think of names for, so if you want one named after you, just give me a yell here. Also feel free to shout suggestions for megaprojects or elf genocide at me.  I'm also mirroring this story on my blog to try and get my friends into this game, so sorry if something looks like an inside joke.

Embark is in a serene temperate forest with clay, sand, "shallow metal," a brook, and no aquifer.

Without further ado, I give you Lobsterhappiness.

Obsidian 22, 124

Dear Journal,

King Jimyel Enzurokir has granted me permission to start a new settlement and expand the Dwarven lands!  I finally have a chance to put my skills to use and start a new life.  I've already assembled a party of able dwarves to come start this new settlement with me.

First is Beaucifus, a miner.  I was a little suspicious when he started talking about "punching trees," but the Miners Guild insists that he knows what he's doing.  Next is Jacokl, a wood cutter and carpenter by trade.  He seemed competent, but that may have been because of the flannel cap he was wearing.  Then, we have Hannah, an unusually tall dwarf with a multitude of skills related to food.  She even offered to pack provisions for our journey!  Next is Joedaddy, a hunter.  He kept talking about how he wanted to hunt "the most dangerous game."  I figured he was talking about the unicorns rumored to frolic through the woods we will be living in, so I agreed to bring him along.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Then there's Loki, a craftsdwarf.  She was mildly skilled in many crafts, but the main reason I brought her along was because she knew how to make soap.  The elders always talked about what great warriors soap makers are, so I figured she'd be able to protect us in case of trouble.  Next, there's Caiest, a miner with an odd hobby in ceramics and an even stranger obsession with bears.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
And last, but not least, there's me.  Easily the most talented and useful person in the group thanks to my administrative skills.  The seven of us leave tomorrow for the new land.  Hopefully, it will be an uneventful journey.

Obsidian 25, 124

It has not been an easy journey.  The provisions Hannah provided for us proved to be the most vile and perplexing pile of slop I have ever seen.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
How in blazes does she expect us to derive nourishment from a firefly's brain?!  More importantly, how did she even procure one?!  At least this demonstrates what a skilled butcher she is.  If not for the large supply of bacon, the rest of the group surely would've turned back by now.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I never imagined that travelling on the surface could be so creepy.  Every time I step away from the group to answer the call of nature, I hear disturbing cackling coming from the woods around me.  When I tell the rest of the group about this, they insist that there's no such thing as bogeymen and say that I shouldn't be afraid to wander off alone.  It's an oddly specific denial.  This is definitely a peculiar bunch I've joined forces with.

DF Modding / Bringing in a fresh crop of... null?!
« on: February 25, 2011, 12:02:12 am »
So, there appears to be something wrong with this plant:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The plant itself appeared on the embark list, but when I tried to grow it as a crop, I got multiple stacks of (blank).  I haven't had any problems with any other plants so far, so I don't think it's from duplicate raws.  Can anyone see what's wrong with my code?

DF Modding / Itemcorpse Butchery
« on: February 23, 2011, 04:15:51 pm »
Does itemcorpse work if the creature is a tame animal being butchered, or does it only apply to creatures being killed by other means?  Like, say, if I were to make pigs drop bars of pig iron on death, would butchering them just give me regular pig parts, or would it give me a bar of pig iron?

DF Modding / Slave "Pets"
« on: February 21, 2011, 11:37:30 pm »
Since searching hasn't brought me any results, I guess I'll ask here.

Is it possible to have pets do any sort of labor, or are "slaves" simply impossible to simulate in the current system?

DF Modding / Plant Fun
« on: February 20, 2011, 05:37:59 pm »
I am trying to add peanuts and cacao to my game.  I'm modeling them off of rock nuts, but I don't think either plant's leaves are actually used for anything.  How would I make a plant go straight to the seeds?  Should I add a custom reaction?

DF Modding / Rock Weapons
« on: December 21, 2010, 02:09:45 pm »
What determines whether a stone can be used to make stone weapons or not?  Is it the MAX_EDGE tag?  If I created a bludgeoning weapon with the CAN_STONE tag, would I need to add impact tags to the stones to make them work?

DF Modding / Candy Fortress v0.7b: Cotton candy isn't a euphemism anymore!
« on: December 17, 2010, 10:24:47 pm »
DFFD Download Link

I've finished replacing the world's terrain with sweets, and would like someone to give the mod a cursory glance.

From the DFFD description:

A mod designed to replace the world of Dwarf Fortress with a sickeningly sweet world made of candy.

Changes from 0.6

* Mod is now for 0.31.19
* Confectioner's workshop removed. Reactions moved to kitchen and craftsdwarf's shop.
* Many types of eggs can now be made into egg nog at the still.
* New crops that can be smelted, to make up for lack of ore.
* Cake batter added as "clay" types.
* Delicious new glazes.
* Possible flying reindeer sightings
* Possible "brown cow" sightings
* Savage Mountains now home to giant marshmallow peeps
* Candy grasses
* Bumblebee honey should be brewable now.
* Peanuts can now be grown, but have to be shelled at the kitchen by a food processor.
* Cacao beans can be crushed to make cocoa butter, which can be used for cocoa butter soap.

Changes from 0.5

* Fish and sharks replaced with Swedish fish and gummi sharks
* More above ground crops
* Candy hearts fixed
* Hard candy can now be crafted into lollipop axes or sucker maces at the Confectioner's Workshop
* Most "wood" and "stone" can now be turned into food at the Confectioner's Workshop
* Bacon can be alloyed with chocolate
* Metals left in the raws have been removed so you'll no longer have nobles demanding electrum goblets

Changes

* All stones and metals replaced with various sweets
* Trees are replaced by candy canes and gingerbread
* Language files have been updated to give civs more "cutesy" names
* Goblins now attack with dentists wielding drills
* New building, Confectioner's Workshop
* Some creatures have been changed into candy versions
* Gingerbread Men are a "Play Now" race for Adventure Mode

Planned Changes

* More tinkering with the inorganic layers and "metals"
* More of a change in the creatures
* Possible tileset
* Easter bunny civ
* Easter Eggs
* Itnetlolor's choco-clown

DF Modding / Candy Fortress?
« on: December 03, 2010, 03:58:32 pm »
Is the Candyland mod still being actively worked on?  I'm interested in modding my game to replace everything with candy, but I don't want to step on people's toes or do something that's already being done.  I searched, but it looks like all the topics are from two years ago.
