Other Games / Does Steam look at browser history? (VAC domain reading)
« on: February 18, 2015, 03:13:08 am »
So, I don't know if I'm late to the party on this or something, but this caught my eye.

I noticed something weird when after looking at a let's play on SMITE and lasso'd into downloading it, I logged back into steam and found all the recommended games on the store page as free-to-play MOBA's, free to play RTS's, and variations on the theme. Indeed, the entire front page seems to list games as variations on the theme. I was curious, so I looked up if steam actually tracks my browser history. (I'm using google chrome.)

Well...

So, I suppose there's nothing wrong with trying to appeal to the proper demographics when advertising, but still I feel like this is kind of a huge violation of my privacy. Do you guys know if steam/valve still does this? How do you feel about it? Discuss.

Other Games / Materia Magica: New and Improved Moongate
« on: October 21, 2014, 10:24:29 pm »
http://www.materiamagica.com/

A pretty classic MUD that was pretty popular a few years back when it was known as 'Moongate'. (Changed due to copyright issues)

Definitely worth checking out. I'll post the description from the wiki here:

"The fantasy world of Materia Magica, Alyria, consists of four major continents, a massive underground area called the Great Alyrian Underground, and the Faerie Plane, an ethereal zone. The overall theme is medieval fantasy wherein different races live in strife and bloodlust is commonplace.

Materia Magica is a text-based game based on the principle of endless killing and leveling up. The game does provide roleplay and non-combat elements, such as a ship combat system and roleplaying enhancements, helping to expand the game's content beyond the typical hack and slash classification."

The description is somewhat lackluster, though the license was recently aquired by a new developer and they're looking to do a $100,000 rebuild on the client and website, bringing MM to HTML 5.

I know friends of mine that lost their entire high school and college years to this game.

Other Games / Trying to remember the name of a game...
« on: December 18, 2013, 02:37:07 pm »
This game just recently popped back into my head and I was looking to play it, problem is I can't seem to remember the name of it.

It's an old game, with voxely or pixely graphics, but 3D. It's got a name like 'Wargame' or 'War-something' followed by a year, like 2050 or 2030 or something like that. It's an RTS, with the gimmick that you can design your own units based on chassis, guns, propulsion (wheels or tracks or even jet engines) that you research over time. It has had a few remakes since then.

Unfortunately that's all I remember. So, do you think you guys can help me out?

Other Games / Pokemon Fusion and Pokemon Fusion Generation
« on: September 01, 2013, 01:23:26 am »
I'm shocked that there's not a thread for this yet.

Pokemon Fusion Generation is the name of a fan-made project that was just recently featured in a cracked article. The article probably does a better job of explaining the premise of the game than I ever could, but I'll try to give a brief run-down.

A while back, someone made a Pokemon fusion generator that allows you instantly fuse two pokemon together to create a horrible mutated abomination entirely new pokemon. It's hilariously fun.

Obviously the pokemon fuse only with varying degrees of success, but it's a great tool to mess around with.

But that's not important! Someone took this concept and made a full-fledged game out of it:
linky

As far as Pokemon 'fanhacks' go, it's surprisingly mature and well made, even though I'd probably only classify it as 'alpha'. Alot of effects are missing and most fusions can't actually be obtained in the game. That said I definitely think it's worth your time to go check it out.

Holy sh*t that's disturbing

Life Advice / So I need to write my college essay...
« on: October 29, 2012, 08:07:10 pm »
I'm stressing like crazy over it. I'm applying to UF (University of Florida) and I'm right on the gray zone in terms of grades for getting in. (1970 SAT and 3.6 GPA) I really need a good essay to make my application better, so I was wondering if you guys could tell me how I'm doing so far:

Other Games / Orcs Must Die 2: Electric Boogaloo
« on: July 17, 2012, 04:34:05 pm »
Some of you may remember the thread I made a while back. Then again, maybe not. It wasn't really memorable.

Anyway, if you don't remember:
"...is a strategy video game developed by Robot Entertainment. It is a Tower defense game that eschews the traditional top-down view of similar games, instead using a third-person action-oriented viewpoint."

It was unique in that you could use the environment to your advantage, placing physics-based traps to mess up waves of enemies while also playing a 3rd person 'war mage' who was pretty powerful on his own. I loved the original to bits, and played it 2-3 times through. I'm a bit of a fan.

SINCE THEN Robot Entertainment made enough money for a sequel. And it's awesome.

This time, we have co-op; the second player can play as some sort of witch-thing. There are also have a crapton of more traps, guardians, and spells. About 50 in total. AND endless mode, where you try and hold out against increasingly large and deadly waves of enemies for as long as possible.

Anyway, it looks pretty cool, and it comes out on steam in LESS THAN TWO WEEKS. So make sure to buy a copy for you and your friend.

So, yeah. My friend's obsessed with Krautchan and /v/ and all those imageboard places, and he took a bunch of memes from both of them and turned it into a one-man neo-techno band. He would be extremely appreciative if you took the time to listen to one or two videos and give some criticism; constructive and hostile are both welcome.

Seriously, I'm asking you to call my friend a douche on his own youtube channel. Get to it.
EDIT: Foresight is 20/20. This should probably go in creative projects, but it's not my work. Ask me and I'll move it.

Other Games / Gratuitous Tank Battles: from the maker of GSB
« on: June 19, 2012, 06:23:51 pm »

http://www.gratuitoustankbattles.com/

Quote from the website:
"Gratuitous Tank Battles is the new PC strategy game, developed by Positech Games, makers of Democracy, Kudos and of course Gratuitous Space Battles. Gratuitous Tank Battles is an RTS/Tower Defense hybrid with online elements and customisable units. The player can take the role of the defender or the attacker in a series of top-down explodey battles. A built-in map editor will allow easy sharing of custom maps and defensive challenges with other GTB players in a similar fashion to GSB's challenge system.

GTB takes place in an alternate reality where the 'central powers' never surrender and the 'great war' continues for two hundred years. Soldiers still fight in the trenches of the Somme, although rifles have (mostly) become laser rifles and giant armored mechs stride across no-mans land. The two great armies continue to fight with patriotic zeal and little memory of who Franz Ferdinand was and what happened to him. One thing is certain: It will all be over by Christmas 2114."

Intredasting. It looks very W40k-ish, with lasgun-equipped hordes of infantry and ginormous tanks tearing up shit on the battlefield. Pretty cool. Thoughts?

DF Suggestions / Dwarf Fortress Retro Mode
« on: May 26, 2012, 11:54:35 pm »
As a long-time follower of Tarn Adams, and a huge fan of his work, I've seen his newest pet project evolve over the years and become this amazing world-simulator that no-other developer can claim to have created. It's certainly undergone some massive changes: for one, the murderous/amphibious elephants of the past simply no longer exist, and gone with them are the world-ending magma flood machines to defend ourselves against them. (Kind of. You can still build massive aboveground magma reservoirs to flood the map, but eh.)

I'd really like to see a return to the old 2D days, version 23.130.23a, but brought back with all the optimization that we have right now, plus some major bug fixes. Maybe an 'arcade' or 'retro' mode you could select from the main menu. The game's become much more complicated with the addition of the 3rd dimension, and I think some players (including myself) sometimes prefer to play the older, simpler versions of dwarf fortress.

I want to get a general feel from the community about this, who would support that kind of undertaking. Obviously it would take away time from regular development of dwarf fortress. Tarn's the one programming, so it's completely up to him, but I'd definately like to see something like this in the future. Thoughts?

General Discussion / So, got any good zombie flicks?
« on: January 08, 2012, 02:33:51 pm »
I'm in that sort of mood where I want to sit down and watch some good ol' fashioned brain eating, but I'm not really experienced in the good zombie movie department. I mean, there's the more popular ones like 28 days later and its sequel, but I shouldn't even have to count the ways in which it's retarded. The plot makes my head hurt and the characters fucking infuriate me. But that's for another time.

GODDAMN FUCKING STUPID ZOMBIES ON FIRE WHAT THE HELL FUCKING FFFF-*vein pop*

So, uh, anyways. Does Bay12 have any recommendations for good zombie movies? Or at least not completely horrible ones? I've barely seen any, so pitch in your two cents even if you're as clueless as me.

General Discussion / Black Friday! Discussion/Bragging thread.
« on: November 25, 2011, 02:33:22 am »
So, what did the respective community of Bay12 get this year? Sales were kinda shit in general in my area, and surprisingly enough, most of the good sales were at 12:00 AM-1:30 AM instead of Friday night. Regardless, discuss what your haul was/your prospects for buying something.

(somewhat) related:

Basically what the Walmart I went to looked like. We had 30+ cash registers going and the lines barely moved.

Darkness.

Your entire body aches and pains as if you had been beaten several times over by a large Slovenian man wielding a rusty iron pipe. The front of your body feels cold, and somewhat wet and tingly, and you can vaguely hear the loud noises of a bustling marketplace to your left, but as if you were listening through a long tunnel. In fact, the entire idea of eavesdropping on the marketplace seems somewhat rude to you, as you doubt that you have the marketplace's permission in doing so. Your peaceful thoughts are pierced by a wailing scream directly to your right, and the sound of several glass items breaking.

Other Games / Orcs Must Die! IE: Holy shit this game is fun
« on: November 19, 2011, 10:08:49 pm »
Seriously, has anybody tried it? It's like tower-defence, only you're the Zap Brannigan of War-Mages and you get to tear shit up with your magic spells, bladestaff and energy crossbow. IT'S AWESOME. Oh, and I guess it has some pretty good humor in it too.

Regular orcs are basically delicious pieces of XP you can use to make yourself more awesome.

I got it around 5:30 today, I've only stopped playing now to open up this thread. It's really, really, fun.

General Discussion / It's time for... MATH!

The BCC Volume Conundrum

Right, so, here's a little spatial thinking problem that out of my entire class I was the only one to figure out. *pats self on back*

If you've ever heard of cubic units in terms of chemistry, basically they outline the structure of an ionic or crystalline solid through the use of 3D spheres, which represent atoms. They're pretty cool, and they come in all sorts of delicious flavors, but we'll be talking about a body centered cubic, which looks like this:

Now, assuming that the spheres are touching each other, and the shapes in the corner represent 1/8th of a sphere, find the total volume of the cube (including the 'empty space') in terms of r (radius). I want to see if Bay12 is smarter than the smartest kids in my school. I don't have a prize for who solves the problem correctly first, but at least you get a smug sense of self satisfaction. Good luck and Godspeed.

Gigantic, Sweaty Bucky-Balls

Here is a picture of a unique structure of carbon, called buckmeinsterfullmerene, or, a 'buckyball' for short. Its chemical formula is C60.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

How many sides does it have?

General Discussion / Oh hey a new Tim Curry movie-OH GOD NO
« on: November 15, 2011, 06:29:20 pm »
May I present to the fine gentlemen and gentlewomen of this forum some new nightmare fuel for the next few months?

Tim Curry is making another clown movie. And this time it's based on an even more bafflingly stupid premise.

"Sup guys?"
