I've been wondering, what is it that makes it possible for mules, donkeys and horses to breed between each other?
Nothing in the RAWs suggest why, so I was just wondering if anyone knew how.
The best I can think of is a hardcoded function picking up creatures names, but that doesn't sound like Toadys style..

I wish to know if there's any packs out there adding unique "graphics" to the major races like the smiley faces dwarves have (In the regular ASCII, in case you're confused).
I have tried to search, but found nothing.

I saw a guy who had made some in another thread, but he wasn't releasing it until the next version :(
Help would, of course, be much appreciated

DF General Discussion / Dwarf Fortress .ico
« on: December 12, 2009, 06:02:13 pm »
I created an icon depicting the classic dwarf (see image), and was wondering if anyone would be interested in it :) (It's in .ico & .icns for the macs)

Unfortunately DFFD doesn't support the formats yet, but I was just wondering about the general interest :p
Nevermind I'll upload a .zip >.> Silly me...
I personally get a bit frustrated when I got 3 standard icons on my taskbar, since the 40d# releases don't have a .ico attached =/

So, I've wanted to do a hermit challenge, and I get the feeling not many have really been recorded, story wise, so I decided to record this one and tell the story :)

The page is ripped in half, leaving only "...urning alone on their island" before the next paragraph.

My name is Reg Whitebells, and I'm the lone survivor of our group...
A mysterious disease broke out among the settlers as we travelled, only 7 of us survived the trip here...
I could see that the 6 other survivors, at the time, had contracted the disease, so I was forced to... Well, they wouldn't listen!
They were too blind to realize they had it! I was FORCED to leave them there!

I have my pick, a kitten we picked up on our journey, 3 tower-cap logs from the wagon, and 2 female muskoxes.

I will survive though, I will... I hereby name this piece of dirt Withercraze, my name is Reg Whitebells, the Hermit.

I dug out some rooms for a mason's workshop, and a carpenter's workshop.

2 of the 3 pieces of wood will be used on a barrel and a bed.
I went aboveground later in the day, looking for edible plants, afterwards I went to sleep...

It's still in progress. I have this so far. A few of those are useless, but most can be eaten or otherwise used. It's all prepared according to the actual state of the corpse. The meat, ivory, teeth and bone objects are on the next page, and the prepared yummy eyes are on the previous page. I haven't handled the flag for skulls yet, so they are counted with the bones for the moment. It's quite a bit of food, so the numbers might be tweaked, but the small critters also need to give you some food and elephants are very large, so it might end up being hacked up a bit from reality for balance purposes. Of course, elephants are a little harder to kill now, so maybe a bit of a reward is in order. We'll have to see how it plays out. I suppose I could use "sweetbread" for the pancreas. I'm not really sure of other special names. There are stacking/barrel size and hauling issues as well, and I'll adjust numbers and items as needed there as well. If that means randomly cutting several of the specialty food objects for each instance of butchery, that'll be fine for now, and they can come back once I tackle hauling after this release.

It has been getting colder, so I've been keeping my arms under the blankets. This has lead Scamps to invent a new game, where he'll claw my neck until I show him one of my fingers. Then he'll go about his business for the rest of the night (or day, I guess).

That's almost too graphical, or, well, I'm not too sure..
prepared elephant intestines [17]
... Nasty!

Hopefully the whole prepared meal thing will be balanced then.. If he keeps the current system you could slaughter an elephant and get... 300,000? Dwarfbucks in meals.

DF General Discussion / THE tantrum spiral - from 120~ dwarves to 2
« on: September 10, 2009, 01:34:14 pm »
Little backstory first:
I wanted to try a fort whose entire population was created directly from the starting seven.
I also wanted this to go a bit faster, so I removed the children tag, and the multiple-birth-is-rare tag.
I also removed migrants, or so I thought.
In return, I reduced a dwarfs life expectancy to 2 - 4 years, genned and embarked.

The year was 105.
I took inspirations from the caves kobolds live in, and "planned" the fort from that design.
However, 2 - 4 years proved to be too little for the dwarves, the starting 7 never managed to reproduce, even though 6 of them married each other.

Second time, I reclaimed upon the first fort, and had the modifed the raws to give the dwarves a lifetime of 4 - 9 years.
The year was 108.
I went to bed yesterday with Dtil unpausing it the entire night, at 2219.
Today I get up to a message informing me of the fortress' withering awayness.
Dtil tells me the last unpause was at 0345, (This was at 0600~) the fort lasted until year 120.
4 artifacts was created from 116 - 118.

I reclaim again, the year is 121.
51 dwarf skulls on embark, not bad I think.
I feel ill, so I go to bed again, leaving it genning.

I get up again at 1446, to meet 72 dwarves, all legendary in hanging out, with 50 of them being peasants, rest being migrants for some reason.
The year is 131, there's 5 artifacts, and a lot of the dwarves got grandmothers, uncles etc., just like a king!
Around year 132 the population have peaked at 120 - 130, with a 1/3 of the fort being babies (They're babies for one year before growing up to be a productive member of society peasant).
The food production begins to falter, since the entire fort and it's limited industry was made for 20 or so dwarves.

The tantrums begin slowly, dwarves being hungry, then angry when their parents die.
Everyone in the fort was either related, or friends, due to a 2x3 dining room, to promote breeding.
This was going to be glorious.

The mothers die due to old age, the fort reaching an age where the first babies are just too old, the babies, often triplets, plunge themselves into the well.
The miasma rises, further enraging the dwarf population, tired of being hungry and electing mayors who often die of old age before finishing their terms.

The riots start, dwarves plunge into each other, the larger dining room I made was a battlefield consisting of toppled over tables, bedrooms are being ripped apart by their owners and the ponds are tainted by the rotting corpses of the orphans.

Forward to Mid-winter 133, maybe 1˝ year after the first dwarves went hungry, theres 2 0 (The engraver killed the remaining sane dwarf) dwarves left.
And now for some pictures, unfourtantly I got none of the tantrum going on, but I think you'll get the picture...

Have anyone had this happen before?
None of the twins have each other marked as twin in relations however, just older sister and younger brother =/

A little backstory, through the course of fort I've managed to tame 2 (female) dragons.
There's also a central shaft of 3x3 up/down stairways going from the surface to the bottom.
The 2 dragons are chained next to the surface stairs, so noone can enter without getting their arses burned off.

Anyways, my king and king consort come, and I see one of the kings objects of worship are one of my dragons!
"Oh this will be interesting!" I naturally think.

Some times go and I notice the consort starts to spam "Interrupted by Stray dragon".
She's on the bottom level going to the staircase, getting scared and backing of a few tiles. I zoom to surface level and see a smear of blood near a dragon, but no wounds on it. No wounds on consort either.

I pop out to install Overlord II (Gonna be fun), comes back, and check announcements: The dragon have bled to death, along with notices the king have been interrupted as well.
I check consorts kill screen, no kills.
The king was the one who shot it down... His own object of worship... A tamed dragon....

Why exactly?
Oh, and I got no advisor :s
Well, I saw an advisor down in the mines just when the king arrived, 20~ z-levels below... Marked as friendly :s
Then he left..
So, can you solve my mystery?  ??? ???

So, a siege come, right after the human caravan, and a squad spawn on top of the human diplomat (In the east).
So i rush my 16 dwarf strong military out to defend the peasants going for his socks (Didn't think about forbidding them)...
No problem, but then I get a message about a guard dying, I zoom to my fort and....
Oh... Oh God....
The blood....

I left open my flanks and 2 other squads are now south and north of my base, a single shift-click away from the main shaft...
The northern squad moves in, and my military being south-east after a chase pause to engage the southern troops, leaving the northern army with no resistance but what my guards can put up.

So, my 130~ strong fort are 20~ dwarves poorer, and I learned an important lesson in fort defense: get your civvies inside to safety, lock up, and have an emergency squad stationed.
Pic related, it's the aftermath.

Oh well, I had Fun™
UPDATE:
Oh shit... guards are taking turn in tantrumming, a few civilians are joining in now and then, and my military are all unhappy... This fort is a ticking bomb...
UPDATE2:
"Migrants refused to journey to such a dangerous fortress this season."

DF Modding / Creating racial hatred through raws?
« on: July 06, 2009, 08:20:03 pm »
I tried copying over the personality modifiers from goblins and gave [liKES_FIGHTING] to the elves, and gave dwarves goblin ethics, but after world gen they weren't at war.. =/
Any help on how to successfully pit races against each other?

So in the 40d# releases, a tileset called PTTGV5 comes included. I really like the diagonal walls it produces, but in diagonal hallways/corridors it doesn't look too good with the floors..
The '+'es are too far spaced from each other and you don't get the feeling that they move along the walls..
Don't know how to describe it, but I was sure I could improve the feeling of the design: Smaller tiles surrounding the bigger ones; see picture.

I was on the right track, but it looks way out of place with the black background on the rest of the tiles... But these pics are from the first login after creating the image, so I was pretty happy with the results.
But I thought someone might want something like this, so Im uploading what I've done so far :) Feel free to work on :)

DF Modding / Requesting help for killing off merchants
« on: March 29, 2009, 06:47:21 am »
I'm playing Legendary Lands and 2 hobgoblin merchants have been standing in a hallway for 2 years now.
They've gone semi-mad, as in they'll destroy anything they see (Walls, floodgates etc.) but they aren't hostile..

Dwarf Foreman and the magma-tile hack won't pick up that DF is running (Using 40d9) unfortunately =/
Anyone know what to do to make it compatible? Or have an idea to kill them 'conventionally' ?
I can't really play the fortress until I have a fix as they'll start smashing up the fort if I load my fort >.>

Help much appreciated :)
