DF General Discussion / Vampires and the Mountainhomes
« on: June 16, 2011, 12:18:17 am »
Recent updates on the main development blog have given me a few ideas. Since a Vampire could theoretically become a leader, suppose your Dwarven civilization happens to be ruled by a Vampire king. I think that a bit of interesting flavor could be, after your fortress' population has risen sufficiently, the liaison from the Mountain Homes demanding tribute in the form of dwarfs to be drained by the King.

A the dwarf to be taken ought be selected by the player, and being taken as tribute ought cause a bad thought in all of that dwarf's close relations, and possibly form grudges between the family and friends of the sacrificed and the current leader of the fortress. The numbers demanded each year by the mountain homes may continuously grow, until the player begins protesting against the tribute.

This should escalate to open conflict between the Mountain Homes and the player's fortress, ending perhaps with a siege lead by the vampire king himself. If he is killed in the process, peace is declared, and blood tribute ends.

Mainly, I'm interested in what other people think. Would this be a worthy idea to offer in the suggestion forms? Or, ought I just forget about it?

General Discussion / And so, it Begins
« on: May 26, 2011, 06:47:46 am »
http://english.aljazeera.net/news/asia-pacific/2011/05/201152635539179264.html

In the heart of China, Three separate car bombs were detonated outside of three separate government buildings, within half an hour of each other. This was meticulously planned, and organized. Fortunately, only two people were killed and six were injured. This comes in the wake of the Man who built and organized the Great Firewall of China having various objects thrown at him.

I wouldn't say that things are boiling over in China just yet, like things have in the Middle East, but the pot has begun to simmer, and close attention ought be paid to events in the PRC. This can either pitter patter out and be completely forgotten, or could, in the long run, be the most important of all these revolutions.

Other Games / I have a friend who needs entertainment...
« on: April 16, 2011, 02:10:54 pm »
... My friend is currently based in Iraq, and is bored out of his mind. Steam does not sell games to IP addresses in Iraq, and even if they did, since his bank card information is United States based, he can't buy the games from Iraq anyway. Thus anything he can get out there must be received as gifts.

Unfortunately, he alerted me to this only after I gave away a spare copy of Portal to a fellow Fourmite. Thus, if any one of you want to pre-order Portal 2, and give him the extra copy of Portal one, PM me. Upon that, if anyone desires to gift anything at all to his steam account and make life in the middle of the desert a bit less desolate, let me know as well. He says that he'd take basically anything right now to entertain himself, even if it's some cheap indie game. I'll be hooking him up with something myself as well, soon.

This morning on Morning Joe on MSNBC, Donald Trump responded to positive feedback to a poll that positively responded to a Donald Trump presidential Candidacy. He said that he is "seriously considering" running for President in 2012.

Just thought you should know. Discuss.

Creative Projects / Based on a True Story
« on: September 22, 2010, 10:57:34 am »
The Pyhrric war grew out of hand rapidly. The City-state of Tarentum, desperately attempting to avoid conquest by the fledging Roman Republic escalated what began as a minor treaty violation into a full scale war, calling upon the King of Epirus, Pyrrhus to aid them against the Romans, and other near by tribes in the southern Italian peninsula.

Though a briliant leader, capable of winning many victories against Rome, the inability to reinforce his army effectively and defend captured cities while fighting forcefully lead to the Roman Republic eventually finding victory in the face of defeat, turning it into a war of attrition. Pyrrhus' victories were for naught, and he and the remnants of his army fled back to Epirus. It is at this point that the Consul of Rome overstepped, and seeking revenge, gathered together a Consular Army somewhat large for the time. It consisted of some 320 lightly armored swordsmen with large shields, 320 moderately well armored spearmen with large shields, 320 Etruscan style Hoplites, which made the backbone of the army, the rear battle line. In addition to these 960 men, about 400 peasants trained in the use of the Sling padded out the army. As a final measure after making landfall on the Greek peninsula, the consul hired a mercenary band of some 300 archers from the Greek island of Crete. Lastly, if the Roman hoplites formed the backbone of the Roman army, the head was of course the Consul himself, along with the 100 or so spear wielding horsemen in his personal bodyguard.

Epirus' main homeland army had not been effected by the war on the Italian peninsula, and combined with Pyrrhus' expeditionary army, the total force of the Epirote army, though hard to determine the composition exactly, held nearly 3000 men total, most of which levied peasants with only sparse hoplite combat training, with a few hardened hoplite regiments. Most disconcerting for the Romans, however, were the War elephants. As soon as the Romans made landfall, the Epirote army marched upon them at the news. The Romans had the terrain on their side, however. The Epirotes found and marched on merely half of the Roman army, the rest lay in wait hidden in tall grassland and woods near the field of battle, the peasant slingers and archers especially. Once the Epirote army had passed the woods and nearly engaged the Romans, the hidden archers and slingers unleashed thousands of missles upon the army. The first, unexpected volley killed hundreds of men on it's own, and it became ever more terrifying as their target switched to the elephants.

Out of the hundreds of arrows and stones shot at the elephants, only three hit where necessary. One took an arrow to the eye, another a stone. The third took an arrow in a major artery. These three elephants broke into a panicked frenzy which quickly spread to the other elephants, turning the Epirote's greatest asset into a major liability. Finally forced into engagement with the Roman army, and then subsequently partially surrounded by the hidden portion of the main line forces, the Epirotes quickly broke, and Pyrrhus was forced again to retreat, in the face of this devastating defeat. They lost half of their men at least in the battle, and could only hope for a solid city defence to counter the Roman expedition.

Thus, the siege of the Epirote capital began. This lasted for some months before a proper attack on the city began. The Slingers and archers, none of whom died in the last battle as they were never engaged in direct combat, were brought before the walls and fired over them, forcing the defending forces to retreat deeper into the city, sustaining casualties as they went. Meanwhile, a battering ram was brought to the city gates. After the gates were beaten down, the Roman army wasted no time, and quickly marched through. The defenders just within the gates were  just able to make a modest defense. However, Pyrrhus himself proved himself braver than most generals. He left the city walls by a side gate, and charged the roman army shoving through the gates from behind. Unfortunately for him, Consul Dolabella was just as brave, and the rear line of the attacking force consisted of the heavy Hoplites, uniquely suited to deal with he calvary charge. The Consul's bodyguard hit Pyrrhus' own bodyguard calvary from behind, the hammer to the Hoplite's anvil. Quickly surrounded, Pyrrhus fought, to the death.

With Pyrrhus, their king and General lying dead, the Epirote army broke into a full retreat deeper into the city to regroup. The Roman army, high off of this partial victory, gave chase. Consul Dolabella himself charged through, exploiting the route to kill as many men as possible.

Then; Disaster. The Captain who took over command of the Epirote army was no fool himself, and Pyrrhus himself thought far ahead of the Romans. The chase of the Epirote army ended swiftly, as the elite hoplites of the Epirote army stood like a wall in the narrow city streets. Peltasts behind them flung javelins by the hundred into the mass of Roman men, and a previously unseen group of men made their presence known.  Hidden in side streets, Phalanx formations, men carrying twelve foot long spears in a tight grouping marched foward, and around, behind the Roman army. In the narrow streets, the Phalanx is neigh invulnerable. Though they are not equipped for close combat, the Phalanx men never have to engage in it when their flanks and rears are covered. In this case, by the walls of nearby buildings. The Romans are then in a tight situation. The whole mass of their army, including Consul Dolabella, is lodged between the Epirote's hammer (The Phalanx) and anvil (The hoplites this time. As long as the hoplites merely hold the line, the Romans would be doomed.

Meanwhile, outside the walls, the captain of the mercenary band of Cretan Archers sees an unexpected opportunity to win glory, and greater pay. The archers of Crete, accomplished swordsmen as well as archers, make no hesitation. They charge through the gates, and hit the Phalanx formation from behind. Fresh, and eager, their attack is more effective than anyone could have hoped for. The several hundred phalanx men break formation, panic, and surrounded themselves now, are quickly butchered.

From the brink of defeat, the Roman army turned the battle around. The shield wall that held them back broke down, and the Epirote army was surrounded in the midst of the city. The army, which began far larger than the Roman army found itself found itself faced with inevitable defeat. Some quick manuvering brought the heavy hoplites behind the Epirotes, and the Consul's calvary made it's last charge to slay the last few dozen men, Dolabella himself certain, that this victory would earn him a place in history, forever. One final great charge, as the last of Pyrrhus' legendary army di---

[BUILD_ITEM:1:NONE:NONE:NONE:NONE][BUILDMAT][WORTHLESS_STONE_ONLY][CAN_USE_ARTIFACT]

What can we glean from this text?

I'll address every Tag from top to bottom in order, and explain the ones I can make sense of.

[OBJECT:BUILDING] This tag is probably required at the start of every building. I haven't experimented with it, so I can't be certain of that.

[BUILDING_WORKSHOP:SOAP_MAKER]  Since only custom workshops are in at this point, Building_Workshop seems redundant. If the system is generalized to other types of buildings later, maybe it won't be. This tag is what the workshop is named in all other raw references, for permitted buildings in the creature raws for example.

[NAME:Soap Maker's Workshop] This is what is actually going to show up when you hit b in dwarf mode.

[NAME_COLOR:7:0:1] This is the color of the name as it is displayed in the building menu, and possibly after it's already been built, and you 'q' over it, or otherwise visit any menu that references it.  it uses the same method as creature colors, foreground:background:brightness

[DIM:3:3] This is an interesting one. In the development logs, he did mention being able to have workshop sizes other than 3x3, and this is the tag to do that. For obvious reasons having either dimension being 0 is impossible, but you can have a building of whatever size you want, within reason. I suspect extremely large sizes are not supported or would cause glitches. I haven't tried putting 500:500 in there, but if anyone wants to see what happens, be my guest.

[WORK_LOCATION:2:2] This defines where in the building the dwarf will stand to work. In this case, in the center

[BUILD_LABOR:SOAP_MAKER] The skill used by the building is defined here. You can't add new job or skill types right now, so you're always going to be refering back to an existent skill as defined under the PERMITTED_JOB tags in entity_default.

[BUILD_KEY:CUSTOM_SHIFT_S] This tag defines the button shortcut for selecting the building. This can be left blank, meaning that you have to use the secondary selectors in the menu to scroll over and highlight the building name to build it. Custom is presumably always required, but can be followed with any letter or Shift_any letter for the capital version, as the tags are always capitalized.

   [BLOCK:1:0:0:0]
   [BLOCK:2:0:0:0]
   [BLOCK:3:0:0:0]

Determines whether any tiles of the building are impassable once built.

[TILE] and [COLOR]: are closely related. First, I must explain why they are iterated three times. It merely shows the progress of the construction, starting at the first and ending at the last.

[TILE] defines the displayed tile at each block, appears to be able to take in characters surrounded by ' ' such as empty spaces or =, or can reference objects on the tileset you're using by number, without ' ' around them.

[COLOR] tags look complicated but aren't. Each line contains three instances of the color codes, foreground:background:brightness, for each tile the building is wide. The first number is not part of the color codes, but instead determines whether it's just been laid down,
  • construction is started [1], progressing [2] or finished [3]
[BUILD_ITEM:number of items:item type (if not stone):unknown:unknown:unknown]

(all three unknowns probably have something to do with quality, item material, and if an object like a rope, cloth, or thread, how much is required. Cannot be sure until experiments are done, or Toady tells all.)

[EMPTY] means the object cannot contain anything (like water in this case), presumably.

[CAN_USE_ARTIFACT] The bucket can be an artifact bucket.

[BUILDMAT] Restricts the item to building materials such as wood logs, raw stone, and blocks of wood, stone or metal

[WORTHLESS_STONE_ONLY] Only non-economic stones will be permitted for building this structure. I guess [CAN_USE_ARTIFACT] refers to blocks being used, if somehow a dwarf makes artifact stone blocks.

There may be more tags that are not in the Soapmaker's Workshop. Toady would need to inform us of that.

Creative Projects / Just a rambling idea...
« on: March 04, 2010, 12:52:45 pm »
The few of you who've been keeping up with my LP of Europa Universalis 3 probably realize I'm a big fan of Paradox interactive. The games are absolute glorious breaths of fresh air from the smog of the mediocrity of modern gaming.

I do feel that there are certian things lacking, things I would do differently. For example, the world is carved up in exactly the same way at the start of the game, and the world is exactly the same world. If I were to make a big dramatic change to say, Crusader Kings, I would introduce concepts found in Dwarf Fortress just to start with. Procedural generation of the game world, procedural generation of family lines and characters, procedural generation of cultures, and lastly procedural generation of religions, and finally procedural division of the game world into individual territories.

It would not need to be anywhere near as deep as Dwarf Fortress, of course, though the more I think about it, the more I think that this idea could in fact be a part of the finished Dwarf Fortress… Anyway, it wouldn't need to keep track of more than a character's general appearances and a few statistics relevant to leadership abilities and their overall status.

By necessity of random generation, certain things would have to be very different. Events would have to be extremely generalized to apply to a virtually limitless number of possible scenarios. There could never be events that trigger to the same country at the same time every game. While most of the events in Crusader Kings, as an example, are this way, they are also narrow in scope due to the nature of the game. It is Crusader Kings after all; you never get the chance to play anything other than a christian monarchy without hacking the game, and thus the range of events is necessarily limited to the confines of this government type.

For example, while it is important in a Monarchy to groom your heir to be prepared for leadership, one of the principle focuses of Crusader Kings, that cannot be the focus of a Republic. In addition, several of the things like keeping track of piety and how much you give to the Church may not be as important, or even relevant at all for leaders, in a given cultural or religious group.

I need to think on this idea further. Expand on it, explore the feasibility. taking things one step at a time, the first step is probably to tackle the generation and division of the map and rendering it, which for me will probably be the second most difficult thing after the GUI. Never been good at graphics, but I can shuffle numbers around like an IRS agent.

Play With Your Buddies / Lets Play Europa Universalis 3: In Medias Res
« on: February 25, 2010, 01:35:10 pm »
I've been playing a lot of Europa Universalis 3 lately. All expansion packs included. So much so, I wanted to create an LP, but felt that I was not yet competent enough with the game to be successful with what I was attempting to do at all. So I played a series of testing runs to get a feel for how to carry out my plans.

Then, things got severely awesome to my supreme disappointment, as I wasn't keeping track of it.

I decided early on that I would play as the Merchant Republic of Venice, and try my damnedest to become a major world player. Not just economically, mind you, but territorially, militarily, globally. I found it kind of shocking when I managed to pull it off. I'll try to describe in detail as much as I can about the way things happened. Not just the growth and supremacy of Venice, but of the course of world as time went on... Truly Bizarre directions. I will, maybe, continue here where I left off. I'm not even into the 1700's yet, so there's plenty of game still left.

((I was also playing with the Whole World mod that adds several nations and provinces, filling out the Terra Incognita entirely.))

At the beginning of the game, the state of the world was completely historic. The First Doge of Venice is given a mission to conquer Verona. After a few years of hiring mercenaries, recruiting a standing army, and extending the reach of Venetian Merchants across Europe, an invasion is launched, and Most of Milan falls before the weight of Venetian arms. Much of this territory is quickly snapped up by the Doge in the peace accords, at the expense of great Infamy, but it is of little consequence as I do not intend to launch another major war for some time.

Of course, Milan happens to be part of the Holy Roman Empire, as are most of the North Italian states, and the Emperor in Bohemia did attempt to protect Milan. However, Hungary offered me an alliance before the declaration of war, and I accepted for the single reason that doing so would ensure that Hungary would act as a buffer against Bohemia, and quite possibly defeat the Holy Roman Emperor before his armies set foot south of Trent. The strategy worked.

Genoa is what falls into my sights next, though, for one main reason. It's capital, Liguria, is a major center of trade that stands in direct competition to Venice. Attacking at the moment is fairly pointless, though, given that I wouldn't be able to capture it in one go. I bide my time.

Meanwhile, an aggressive and expansionist Kingdom of Aragon launches a war of Conquest against Naples. By the end of the war, Naples is reduced to a pittance of small provinces in the mid Italian Peninsula, between the territories Aragon claimed for itself (South Italy and Sicily), and the Papal States to it's North.

France is a bastard around this time, and decides that the English cannot be tolerated, and declares a war of aggression. The English are backed up by Austria, Aragon, and Castille, and Britanny. and the French are seemingly hosed. But somehow, they manage to pull off a mighty defense and stave off the English, the Brentons, the Austrians, The Spanish, and the Catalans from major incursions, while the other countries begin to fall victim to war exhaustion and revolution. When Peace is finally brokered, France looses only a smattering of northern territory to the English, but it is not a real gain for the English. The War left no men to put down revolution on the Island, and the Kingdom was divided several times over.

Byzantium does not fall to the Ottomans. Huh.

Soon, the Alliance with Hungary falters. Dangerous, as the King of Hungary is soon elected Holy Roman Emperor, and leads massive wars of expansion to the east. Hungary is a superpower, while Austria dwindles due to War Exhaustion fueled revolt. France doesn't even need to lead a war of reconquest against the English, as revolts draw the northern provinces back under the French King's control.

Systematically, I begin to diminish the authority of the Holy Roman emperor by having all Imperial Provinces under my control abandon the HRE, under the pretense that the Emperor cannot keep the HRE stable, one by one, every couple years. Soon, opportunity arises. Savoy, west of Milan, and an Ally of what's left of Milan, is not guaranteed by anyone, nor do they have much power to speak of. A declaration of war is issued. They offer little resistance, and are entirely occupied, but I am only interested in one province; Nice. This is for one reason alone; The year is 1450 something, and it will soon be possible to reach for new land beyond the Mediterranean. We need a strong port as close to the Strait of Gibraltar as possible to launch colonists and supply vessels. It only becomes capable of doing so after it becomes a core province, which takes some 35 years.

We are set for colonialism by 1485.

Around this time, aware that I now share a land border with the French, and have established myself as a minor power among greats, Castille, Aragon, and England all offer me alliances, in a sort of Anti-French Coalition. I accept.

Africa is much closer than the new world. As soon as I can, I adopt the Quest for the New World national idea, and send an explorer to venture along the African Coast, and establish a Colony in Trazra. There is a native tribal kingdom in the area, and I declare war. Everyone of course has to join the party, and the captured territory is divided up between Venice and Castille. While Castillian territory in Africa contains one valuable resource, Slaves, I feel I got the better deal. Gold, grain, and livestock. Before, Venice had to import much of it's grain due to lacking any grain producing provinces, making troops expensive to recruit and maintain. Not so anymore.

With Trarza established, getting it up to shape as quickly as possible is top priority, so that it too can become a launching point for further colonialism. During this time, no real major war is fought that involved Venice. Aragon managed to annex the last of Naples, however, making themselves a major threat. Once my Infamy goes down far enough, I do invade Genoa, and demand that they release Corsica as an independent state, which not only looks good for me, but reduces Genoa to one state, ripe for annexation. I also snap up the Italian Minor of Modena.

This is about where things really start to get interesting. The thing about the North Italian states is that almost all of them come with Universities already built in them, which contribute 5 gold monthly to Government research. Natrually, whomever owns them all makes very fast progress government wise. I happened to own most of them by then. I realized that I could keep it's growth keep pace with the rest of the technology sectors if I cut it's funding and distributed it out to the others. In the end, Venice is taking in more income than any other country in the world, let alone Europe, mostly on the back of Trade. Almost as soon as it is possible, Venice monopolizes the Centers of Trade in Venice, Lübeck, Liguria, Ile-de-France, and Novgorod.

Around 1485, a single Colony is established in the Caribbean island of Barbuda. Explorers complete a map of the land around the Caribbean sea, and Venice takes a quick liking to the place. Reminds them of home, but warmer and less swampy. As soon as Trarza is fit for launching colonists, the territories of modern Haiti are colonized, as well as the province of Maracaibo.

The Caribbean becomes a bit of a Venetian dream. A Venice-In-The-West, one could say. Maracaibo is made the national Focus, and a Center of Trade is established there as soon as it's population reaches 1000, and there's money to pay for it.

To the North, in North America, Castille colonized or conquered a large portion of what we would call New England. (New Spain now, I guess) They also established a trading center of their own in Powhatan. The English bypass North America altogether, and head straight down, and colonize Patagonia, far south in South America. France takes a single Caribbean island, parts of Canada. Er... Sweden colonizes Manhattan island and a few places around it. and Portugal everything between Swedish and French territories

I have better designs though. A new colony is founded on the newly discovered Ascension Island off the coast of east Africa, in order to supply colonization to the east. Peace continues for a while, and the pope snaps up more of the Italian Minors, until it's just Me, Pisa, Mantua, and the Papal States, and Aragon in Italy. Then, something that utterly horrifies me happens.

The Holy Roman Emperor, displeased by his lack of authority, decides after a series of reforms, to centralize the Holy Roman Empire's Government, and bring all of the states under a single banner, turning it from a collection of states into a single Superstate. This worried me greatly. It's one thing to try to fight off. the individual nations of the HRE, but unified, it is unstoppable.

Or so I feared. In truth, the whole thing was a castle of cards. It lasted for a few months, before the constant nationalistic revolutions kicked in. Hungary is the first country to stray from the single banner, followed by a few others that are snapped back in. But the HRE military is outpaced by the number of revolutionary uprisings, and within a matter of months, the empire implodes. The major powers within it are a theocratic Archbishopric of Wurzburg, and the Bishoprich of the Palatine. Bohemia is liberated and becomes a Republic, and establishes extremely friendly relationships with me, and Luxembourg. Yes, LUXEMBOURG, with a nation under it's control equal in size and power to Bohemia. Other minor states crop up as well, and constantly change shape. All in all, Germany is a freaking mess.

By this time, I'm a couple years ahead of my time technology wise, and manage to become the first Administrative Republic in the world. This is a good thing, as it enables further centralization of the government, which in turn means Inflation Reduction for free. For the first time, the inflation rate is negative while I turn an annual income.

The nation of Muscovy took some advantage at this time, and became the Kingdom of Russia, and led a massive series of conquest over the waring and dissolving German states, and around this time I notice that the Ottoman empire completely collapsed and what was left became Turkey. While they were off defending from Russian aggressors around the Black Sea, the Byzantine Emperor saw opportunity and reclaimed much of it's long forgotten territory in the Balkans and Asia Minor.

Why did Istanbul get the works?
That's Nobody's business but the Byzantines.
I guess.

Anyway, getting back on track, after Ascension Island becomes a core, I launch an expedition to the east, and Conquer the Island of Zanzibar from the Zulus. By now, I have the most advanced army in the world as well, and am the first to have a standing army wielding firearms. My explorers head eastward, and soon, it is decided that we simply must be the first to establish a presence in India.

But first, a more pressing issue is at hand. The Pope declares war on Venice. Not just the Pope, either. He brings in Pisa, and Modena. I find this excellent. I conquer Pisa, annex them, and Modena, and annex them. I conquer the pope, taking all but Roma. This does horrific things to my international relations, of course, but nothing comes of it immediately, and I hire several diplomats to smooth things over. They are all extremely highly skilled due to my excessively high cultural tradition.

To the far North, Sweden has been busy. Denmark, and Norway are conquered by the Swedes, and the nation of Scandinavia is born.

Soon, the pope again attempts to launch reconquest against me some 10 years later. He fails, and Rome is Annexed. 35 years after the initial war of Papal aggression, the Italian peninsula can be truly said to be Venetian. A new sort of Nationalism grows from this, and the Republic of Italy is born from the wars. The capital is moved to Rome. The Pope takes up a new residence in the middle of Jerusalem. Given that it's owned by the the Muslims, it doesn't last very long.

Finally, the Conquest of India can begin. At the time, the south end of the Subcontinent is controlled entirely by the Brahmani Sultanate. It's vast, stable, and has many tens of thousands of Soldiers. I make landfall with nine thousand. It's all I need to secure a strong foothold in central India. Another 18,000 men follow, and a large chunk the subcontinent is claimed for Italy. Two centers of trade in India are captured under the banner of the newly formed Italian state, and the Italian Compagnia Dell'Est India is formed. Merchants grow in number throughout the republic, and their exotic wares quickly dominate the markets across the world, in India, Africa, Europe, and the Americas.

Russia is busy during this time. They expand westward further almost every day, consuming the German minors, and the Balkan states. Soon, Russia actually shares a land border with north Italy, and owns ports in the Adriatic Sea. Something has to be done about them, before it's too late.

An Alliance is formed between Italy and the resurgent Byzantine Empire to face the common threat of Russian expansionism, and war is declared. The Italian armies march through Russian Territory, occupying all their territory in the Balkan Peninsula, while the Byzantines march around the Black Sea. A peace is quickly brokered. The Russians were expansive but weak, their armies simply tied up fighting revolution in the distant north east to bother defending. We demand, and are granted, the release of the nations of Croatia, Ragusa, Montenegro, and Albania and Serbia. Yes, they had come that deep. When the peace is established, the new Balkan states stand to resist Russians for a long time. Slowly, the Russian empire recedes under the embarrassing weight of their disastrous defeat. Hungary grows large again, German minors free themselves and expand into Russian territory, Transylvania revolts and declares independence. Russia is reduced to a safely distant nation.

The real threat was closer to home, though. The Coalition against the French had been dissolved in peacetime, and the French took the opportunity to launch a massive invasion of the Iberian Peninsula Castille and Aragon together are unable to resist the might of the French marching in. Castille is broken in two, the Kingdom of Leon is formed out of it's western half, loyal to France. Parts of Aragon are taken into French control, and Southern Castille is taken. Under the embarrassing defeat, Castille suffers revolt after revolt, until finally, the Capital caves in to French sympathizers who'd rather live under a stable government, and Castille is forced to move it's capital. To Powhatan. With the King dead at the hands of the rebles, Castille reforms into a Republic.

Italy takes advantage of the bad situation by launching a reconquest of the territory formerly owned by Naples. Aragon can hardly resist after their massive losses to the French, and the entire Italian Peninsula falls into Italian hands.

Explorers are sent eastward again, seeking new markets to open. Japan is discovered. Not a unified nation, but feudal states. The Empires of Awa, Bungo, and Musashi, standing in opposition to each other, Awa looking to be eventually victorious. Italy ingratiates itself to Awa, as it also controls the local center of trade, and opens the market through diplomacy. The explorer fleet turns north, and finds an island to the north of Japan that is more or less uninhabited. It is colonized before the Japanese can get a hold of it. The Italian Republic stretches at this point from it's furthest western colony in Panama, to Ezochi (Modern Hokkaidō) in the east.

Finally, France becomes intolerable. They make constant threats about how they rightfully own territories in Africa and the Caribbean that haven't seen a French face in all of recorded history. The French King is guilty of much, and must be punished. The French Government is dishonorable scum, and a Punitive war is declared. France is allied with the tiny strip of land bordering north Italy that still dares to call itself the Holy Roman 'Empire'. That much is steamrolled without any effort, and Bern and Schwyz are demanded from the HRE in return for peace. They accept. The war in France lasts longer, but three massive Italian armies push into the South of France, while another marches northwards. Much of eastern and south eastern france are occupied, and as Paris is sieged, Peace is brokered.

Italy takes Provence, Dauphine, Lyonnias, and Franche-Comte as a punitive measure, that will make the next war against France even easier.

And this is where we are left off.

A few details about the Italian Republic. Religious Tolerance is very high. Catholicism is somewhat favored, but Non Catholic Christians and Non Christians are tolerated without negative impact. The government is mostly centralized, but not completely. The primary culture is Venetian, and it is the culture of Roma at this point. The most common type of revolt is Particularist revolts, which consist of people who want a less centralized government. This has calmed down significantly, though. The current Doge has been in office for almost 50 years. I don't know if he's immortal or not, but his stats are too good to stop re-electing him.

If I can find a place to host large, high quality png screen shots, I may start where I am now, and continue with a real LP if support is high enough. Any suggestions?

Other Games / Victoria 2
« on: January 27, 2010, 02:27:10 pm »
Now, I know that given the number of people here who enjoy the Paradox Grand Strategy Series, there must be at least a handful of other people following the development of this game. For those who are fans of the series, but were unaware that Victoria 2 was in the works, here's what I know about it.

  • It's based on the Hearts of Iron 3 engine, meaning that there are a great many more possible provinces. The map and art style are completely reworked of course.

  • The map was developed initially by a community member, ostensibly to eventually replace the Victoria map, and expand the number of available provinces by merging many sea-provinces and redundant land provinces. Paradox asked for permission to use it and modify it for Victoria 2, and got it.

  • Many things are changed in terms of the initial state of the world to make it fall more consistently in line with reality. For example, the addition of the Artisan POP, which acts as a miniature factory. It produces things on it's own according to market demands, and available resources. These POPs are are common in pre-industrial nations. In the beginning, a nation like China has a higher industrial capacity than any in Europe simply due to such artisans, but is soon overtaken as the west industrializes.

  • The interface has been reworked to actually not be utterly confusing.

  • The role of the clergy has been expanded and generalized, no longer defined merely as Priests, but as Clerical Workers, including priests, educators, and other similar roles. Literacy is raised by them. Bureaucrats are also added as a pop. They collect taxes and spread social reforms to the province they're in. If they are absent in a province, it does not pay taxes and does not get the benefit of reforms, making undeveloped colonies expensive, and more likely to revolt.

  • The economic system has been reworked. A lot of the no-brainer choices that are made at the beginning of the game are no longer so obvious. The developers called this Victoria 1's 'Liberal Bias'. It was always a good idea to fund Education to the highest possible degree, always a good idea to free the slaves and have universal suffrage, always a good idea to go for democratic governments, always a good idea to have a lot of social reforms. These decisions will not be so heavily balanced in one direction.

  • The player will no longer be responsible for acquiring inputs for factories; the factories themselves are, and will shut down if they cannot turn a profit. Of course, the government can subsidize factories, and there are good reasons to do that. The first being unemployment; the unemployed may emigrate, and have a higher chance of rebelling. The other being that other factories may require the first factories output as an input, and have profits that cancel out the losses incurred by subsidizing the other.

This hardly touches on the number of changes made, but I can say that the game borrows a lot of ideas from the games made since Victoria. Namely, Hearts of Iron 3, and Europa Universalis 3, and it's expansion packs. I expect great things.

For those who haven't yet played a Paradox Grand strategy game, or find them too complex and difficult: This one may be the one to start with.

General Discussion / Another Victory for FOSS
« on: January 03, 2010, 07:52:23 pm »
I haven't seen my best friend in what seemed like over a year until yesterday afternoon. He's moved several miles away and we just never really found much time to hang out a lot. We made time yesterday, after I heard through his father that he recently got a benign golf ball sized tumor removed from behind right eye.

He's a pretty well in shape guy; lifts weights often, played football and baseball in high school, and no one really suspects him to be the type to have a bookshelf dedicated to rare comics and graphic novels. Hardback copy of Frank Millers Dark Knight, the first appearance of The Punisher in Spiderman, The first appearance of the Silver Surfer in Fantastic Four. Countless others. Nor would they expect him to have another book case stuffed ceiling to floor with dvds, or for him to own a reel to reel projector to watch films from the early 1900's on, half of them soundless.

So it's all quite impressive if you also happen to like fine films. I wanted to show him another obscure example online, but only his laptop has connection to the internet, and it's bugging out. I tell him, there's some good news. I happen to be a certified technician, and can fix it up for him. We open it up, boot to Vista. The lap top's hard drive screeches at us like some sort of hellspawn demon every couple seconds in a way that gets us both to instantly stop conversation and look at eachother, then the machine, and back, mystified.

After downloading Malwarebytes anti-virus onto the machine and scanning the whole system, I determine that it had been infected, if the insanely slow pace of the machine wasn't evidence enough. Hell, a control panel window for Defragmentation and Disk Error Checking opened the second vista booted, and couldn't be closed. Obviously, something is wrong. Very wrong. Malware bytes finds the infections, but they're so deeply ingrained that they prevent Malwarebytes from doing anything to remove them, and probably locked out other antivirus programs as well.

I tell him there's nothing I can do in the amount of time given, tell him to bring it over tomorrow, and let me reformat it. I explain that since he uses that laptop exclusively to access the internet, and access multimedia, Ubuntu Linux would not be the worst way to handle the problem. Having already used Linux as a way to ensure people unfamiliar with the internet's dangers from acquiring viruses in the past, it was a simple logical leap in this case. I tested his hardware with the live cd, and everything checks out fine, so I show him around, and he enjoys it. Likes the interface, Ubuntu's brown-ness blending in rather remarkably well with the brass shade of the laptop's frame, and is overall similar to Windows XP.

Yet when I sit down and install the OS, something happens. The Harddrive wails unearthly sounds once more, and the installer warns of an Input/output error, the entire drive is practically unreadable. The screeching then is what I feared most. Catastrophic hardware failure, not just the virus making it overwork itself.

We discuss it, and decide to acquire a replacement. Only 80 dollars, which is really nothing huge for him; a Journeyman Electrician, who works for a company that does work for several large corporations based in the city. While not rolling in it, he can spare plenty.

We take the replacement back. I've never replaced a Hard drive on a Laptop. I'm glad to find upon opening the bottom panel that it's very simple over all. I replace the faulty one with the new drive, retry the installation of Ubuntu, which cruises along without a hitch, and eventually, it's installed. He's happy. I'm happy he's happy with Linux. I demonstrate it's features, set up ad-block plus on fire fox, DVD support and Flash. All done, he heads home.

As he drives away, and I close the door, I turn around, put my hands on my hips and all I can think is...

General Discussion / The Ideal Bay12 Forum Post

In the DF Modding section of the forum, there is a Raw Travesties thread that puts all the raws through an algorithmic text interpreter and generator to creates something not entirely unlike a raw file, given the proper text.

I've decided to do the same, except with ten pages of Recent Posts on this forum, from basically every single sub forum, to create The Ideal Bay12 Forum Post, or more accurately, a batch of them.

Unsurprisingly perhaps, the first ideal post has something to do with Space Marines and VASSAL, but I'm not entirely sure what.

General Discussion / Texas Governor Race season has begun
« on: December 02, 2009, 07:14:10 am »
And I just saw a political ad. A Mr. Farouk Shami is running for Governor as a Democrat. He is a Palestinian American businessman, who invented the first ammonia free hair color, and owns several hair care cosmetic product brands. He also brought roughly 6000 jobs to Texas in the form of production plants for his business, after relocating them in from China last year.

While at first I thought it was a little silly to think that this guy stands  a chance in Texas of all places, a little more research shed more light on it. He came to America and had 52 dollars to his name, and worked as a hairdresser. He soon developed an allergy to the Ammonia used in hair coloring at the time and was urged to leave the business for his health. This obviously led him to invent ammonia free hair color. His business now earns about 3 billion dollars annually. This guy isn't a joke.
