DF Gameplay Questions / Increasing the viewable area...
« on: January 19, 2009, 06:51:36 pm »
I'm not looking to increase the size of the tiles, or to increase the size of my window, but to increase the amount seen at a given time.  I can increase the window to say, 1280 wide by 800 tall, but the actual game is still the smallish rectangle in the center.  Is it possible to see more tiles at one time?

Also, is it possible to change how quickly the camera pans over when I move the cursor?  It seems to move the screen up too quickly when I am trying to designate areas for mining.  (Often I try to match up the sizes of rooms so they are symmetrical, and the camera jumps when I move just a few spaces, recentering on an area beyond where I can see the first room.)

Obviously these two questions are related. :)  Thanks!

DF Gameplay Questions / Quick question regarding up/down stairs...
« on: January 18, 2009, 08:26:33 pm »
In the wiki, I read this:

"At first, it may seem that there is no need to build downward stairs and upward stairs: if you really want, you can simply build up/down stairs everywhere, although this may be less aesthetically appealing. However, if a dwarf falls, they will not be stopped by an up/down stair but will be by an up stair. A surprising number of things make dwarves spontaneously fall, which normally does nothing, since they like to stay on flat ground. However, if they are, say, climbing a seven-tile-high tower with up/down stairs, you might want to replace your dwarf splatterer. "

Does this mean that building up and down stairs seperately, but still in a vertical column, is less dangerous then building the up/down stairs combined option?

Or does this paragraph suggest it is safer to build a stairway up, then move horizontally over a space or two, and build upwards again?

Finally, is there a difference between building an up stair followed by a down stair beneath it, and simply building an up/down stair?

Thanks :)
