DF Suggestions / Corpse Spike
« on: March 14, 2016, 02:51:22 pm »
An alternative to coffins intended for evil biomes with undead.  Dwarves will automatically drag corpses and such to the spikes, 'bury' them, and the corpse will reanimate but be immobilized.  It will retain the ability to attack, but can be cleaned off of the spike with magma or attacks which would kill it (potentially leaving severed limbs on the ground that could reanimate)

This way you could for instance create a field of grasping corpses around your fort as a sort of first line of detection and defense.

Alternatively, you could stake corpses into place for later cleanup in a magma room or something.

Just a cool sounding alternative that struck me in the midst of the night.

Life Advice / That thread again (girl related of course)
« on: February 21, 2013, 02:20:15 pm »
Good arbitrary time unit, fellow lunatics.  Today it is I that come bearing your latest installment of mild girl problems.

(This isn't a joke thread by the way, I'm just being silly)

So I'm in college and I asked this girl I like out to a date, because she seems to think very similarly to me and I like that.

The problem/lackthereof is that she was concerned that 'dating' would take up too much of her study time, so she said she would be fine with hanging out now and again but couldn't start 'dating' with me.  This is a bit of a poser for me, because I'm not sure how to interpret that.

On the one hand, that is actually exactly what I was thinking.  I didn't want to burn all of my time hanging out with her and start getting horrible grades.  I just wanted to have some time to properly talk with her, and also wanted to show that I seriously liked her without using the whole 'yeah just to hang out no romantic interest at all' approach to try to 'escalate things slowly' or whatever the usual spin on that is.  Assuming that is really what she is thinking, we have no problem.  She just wasn't comfortable with the time investment that 'dating' implied.

On the other hand, my instincts tell me to be worried.  The whole thing also looked kinda like she was trying to avoid spending time with me because she didn't really like me all that much and was trying to avoid me seeing her as a 'girl friend' or such.  We never ended up setting an actual time to 'hang out' meaning she may actually evade even occasionally meeting to talk.  She sounded concerned when she was explaining this to me as if she was worried I would misunderstand on some level or another, and noted that she would have much more time during spring break.  (having fully aritculated that, this concern actually sounds a lot more like horse shit than initially expected)  Ultimately my concern here centers around the fact that she sounded like she was willing to go to lunch with me or such, just the end result was that that wasn't much closer to happening.

A lot of the reason I'm typing this out is because I could use even completely random bullshit advice to help me think.  Any kind of response would be appreciated.  Just typing this out has helped me quite a bit.

Other Games / DOSBOX fun, or; 1993 wasn't all that bad
« on: November 21, 2011, 06:44:34 pm »
(Did a quick search, doesn't appear to be a threat about this)

So I was thinking about the good old days (okay well seven years ago or so) when I played Caesar 3.  I had always wondered about Caesar I and II.  So I found both.  Caesar II came with DOSBOX, and a script to automatically fire up Caesar II.  Alright, cool, 1995.  Still cant run Caesar I though (only 800kb by the way, I mean holy shit).  So I decide to try to direct DOSBOX to run Caesar I.  Lo and behold it works perfectly.  So I'm playing a game from 1993, which has surprising resemblances to Caesar 3, and I notice some pretty interesting stuff.  Low res pixel graphics can be made to look pretty sweet.  It has a lot of the gameplay elements from the later game so far as I can tell.  It also has a right and left mouse button interface, which works pretty well (somewhat hilariously, you cant scroll through the map with the arrowkeys, those move the pointer, presumably for those without a mouse).  You can touch the edge of the screen and scroll through the map at full pixel resolution if you have a tool selected.  It has reasonably catchy chirp music.  It was actually pretty fun when I played through it, and initially I found myself enjoying it more than the later tests in Portal 2.  1993 wasn't too bad...

So, any thoughts?  What are your epic DOSBOX exploits?

Other Games / Inter-system combat games
« on: August 16, 2011, 11:59:30 am »
So, I am having a party with my friends, and as usual we are going to set up a bunch of PC's and play some games later this week.

We have other games, however Conquest: Frontier wars was fascinating.  We all really enjoyed the building system, the multiple solar systems, limited resources, etc.  The combat gets old pretty fast though.  You spend a bunch of time training an admiral, building a big fleet, then the fleet slowly moves itself into position.  It proceeds to stay perfectly still, and pew pew pew's until said fleet either wins or dies horribly.

Do you guys know of any games like frontier wars but with better combat?  It would be cool if the ships at least moved around, and had some means of escape like subspace or something.

Its also possible that me and my buddies are just playing completely wrong, if so I'm cool with someone calling me an idiot and telling me the right way to play.

Other Games / Tribal Wars
« on: May 23, 2010, 05:15:38 pm »
                                            http://www.tribalwars.net/
Tribal Wars is a persistent browser-based game set in the Middle Ages. Every player controls a small village, striving for power and glory.

So, this is a pretty fun little game, in the beginning your goal is to develop your little village during beginner protection so that it can fend for itself out there in the world.

You would have to check it out to see what i mean really, but a quick note if you want to go for it.

Me and a friend are getting the groundwork laid down so that we can back you guys up, therefore your going to want to start in the north-west section, where we are.

Its a very passive game, you queue up tasks for your village, and it happily chugs along while your away.

There are also groups called 'tribes' wich is the games fairly modular system for getting players organised into groups.

You get your own ingame forum, you can appoint secondary leaders, forum moderators, and recruiters.

That, and there are NO npc's at all, its all players interacting on the market, sending armies about, and making all of those villages.

Alright then, whos in?

« on: August 13, 2009, 08:53:05 pm »
I dredged the wiki and did a fairly thorough search and didnt find anything so.

How many bars does it take to make any particular part of armor; id like to know how many bars i need to equip my champs for their next level of training.
