General Discussion / Facepalm for Microsoft
« on: April 24, 2009, 05:23:27 pm »
Windows 7 has an "unfixable" security hole. Or at least they claim it's unfixable. If it is though, residential customers don't even have to worry as the hacker would need to be physically at their computer. Business clients however may just decide to keep using XP.

Discuss windows, microsoft, windows 7, and fail.

DF Modding / Base heat
« on: April 07, 2009, 05:01:57 pm »
What things in the raws can have a set base temperature? I remember hearing about things like flaming crossbow bolts and arrows, but they would lead to spontaneously combusting marksmen.

I want farmable plants with a really high temperature. I'd put a plot around my fortress by the entrance. It'd be a small plot so it wouldn't need to a planter's attention after they've grown and are dangerous. I'd forbid them in my food stockpiles. Lastly, I'd have a dump of booze barrels on a retractable bridge above. You can see where this is going.

Also, can you give me some tips on what to do when starting out?

Life Advice / New Computer
« on: March 11, 2009, 08:31:55 pm »
500$. Don't need another screen. I need a lean, mean, (preferably green) DF churning machine.

I'm having trouble deciding on an AMD or Intel based computer. That 720 BE at 145$ with overclocking sounds like a real deal maker. But with 3 cores just barely outperforming 2 core Intels, I think that the Intels may have a better core-for-core power and may be better for single threaded apps like DF.

DF Modding / Better mass tile editing?
« on: March 10, 2009, 05:54:13 pm »
The tile editor tools I can find have complex enough options BUT can only do 1 tile at a time OR have very limited/simple options BUT can do many tiles at a time.

Is there a tile editor that you can designate an area? Like put the cursor at (X1,Y1,Z1), confirm on the tool GUI, move the cursor to (X2,Y2,Z2) and it edits all the tile flags within the block you designate? The many tile editors I can find are limited to doing only batches of tiles with all the same flag (IE ALL water tiles or ALL gold ore).

I'm trying to find something I can use to create a 2D era map layout.

DF Modding / Many civs, trading and seiges
« on: March 02, 2009, 08:12:59 pm »
Can you have more than one caravan on your map at a time from different civs?
Can you have more than one army on your map at a time from different civs?
The same civs?

I was about to add many more civilizations to make the game much more lively (constant caravans and invasions), but I don't know if that will even work.

DF Suggestions / [minor] Ramps and tile capacity
« on: March 01, 2009, 06:15:55 pm »
A single unit of area in DF holds 7 units of water. A ramp should cut away half of the area to make a triangle. Regardless of the other half of the unit of area still containing half of the original land, it also holds a max volume of 7/7 units of water.
What?
It should hold 3.5 units of water, but we'd have to round that to 3 or 4.

What was the reasoning behind the 7 units of liquid per tile? I propose we use 8 or 6 so we can properly represent liquids on ramps.

DF Gameplay Questions / Notes
« on: February 27, 2009, 12:03:44 am »
I can't figure out placing notes. I can place a ! with different background colors, but I can't find the controls to adjust the symbol color or symbol itself.

DF Suggestions / Iron Pyrite
« on: February 27, 2009, 12:01:15 am »
I just realized, I've never come across fool's gold in DF. Or it's just named as something I don't recognize. Either way, collecting fools gold for cheap decorations and inexpensive aesthetics would be a neat feature. It wouldn't be as valuable as being decorated with real gold, but it would stimulate the same happy thoughts from people who like seeing gold. Perhaps you could swindle merchants and try to pass it off as real gold.

"Fools gold" "Iron pyrite" both return no suggestion results, so I guess it hasn't been suggested yet. I just jinxed that. ;)
