DF Gameplay Questions / Dig Deeper - Honey
« on: November 20, 2009, 02:59:23 pm »
I just downloaded the Dig Deeper mod and must say Im loving it.
Only issue is: I embarked with a queen bee from the "seed" section, and cant figure out how to use it to get honey... Searched the forum, wiki and google and cant seem to find any answers...

Honey brewd  becomes mead, Im guessing, but can it also be used raw or processed in cooking?

DF Gameplay Questions / I has a office - cant do job, need office...
« on: November 05, 2009, 01:57:44 pm »
Hey,
DF keeps telling me my clerk needs an office to update the stockpile records, yet he has a office (see attached pic). Any ideas what the problem is? (checked door, it is passable)

DF General Discussion / The Dorfs are Planning Something
« on: October 27, 2009, 05:22:06 pm »
I have been playing DF for quite some time, and in that time I have learned that there are certain constants, certain beliefs and ways-of-things-being-done which are set in stone:
 - If the dorf can strand himself in an inescapable position while doing ANYTHING s/he will.
 - A skeletal groundhog, can do more damage than a dragon.
 - Just because the aforementioned groundhog outright murdered the plate-wearing, legendary-weapon-wielding warrior dwarfs, does not mean a single untrained dwarf
  - If they can find an excuse to not work (such as a party, taking a break, having a snooze or because they thought they may have seen some sort of animal which may possibly be dangerous thus forgetting what they were doing and dropping what they were carrying.) This is part of why I enjoy the game, you never know what might go wrong.  :D

Which is why I am currently wondering what the dorfs are planning... Starting my latest fort I find they work quickly and precisely, the miners are tearing away at the hard rock, pausing only to build or produce key elements, or a short snooze. The trade-dwarf drops EVERYTHING and sprints to the trade depo as soon as he is needed while the entire fortress mobilises to carry goods for trade to the waiting caravan. Just to add paranoia to unease: One of the miners actually carved out the sewer (read: massive water project of kobolt doom) without getting stuck, falling into a hole, having the whole place collapse or putting his pick through his foot. I swear, if I had sound enabled, they would be singing the hi-ho-hi-ho song... The little buggers MUST be planning something... but what?! Anyone got any ideas what might be going on? Is it some kind of dwarven holiday? are they simply messing with my mind?  ???

DF Gameplay Questions / Troubble with Mayday Tile Set
« on: July 02, 2009, 03:52:52 pm »
Hey,
recently got a new laptop (Dell Studio), and was shocked to find it didnt come with DF, but did have Vista. So, after quickly installing windows 7 and DF, I went to hunt for everyones favorite graphical-interface-for-people-that-just-aint-happy-with-ASCII, the Mike Mayday set.

Now first off, as far as I can understand, the latest EZ download of the set is not the latest DF release, right?

Apparently the laptop does not support 1280x1024, sticking at 1280 x 800. Meaning every time I try running the EZ install it sticks.

anyone got any ideas how to fix this? To be honest I dont need all the graphics, just the bits pertaining to the map itself (trees, rocks, etc) as that is what I cant get used to in ascii... And as far as I can see its only the mayday set which has custom graphics for that...

DF Gameplay Questions / Waterwheel power question
« on: May 17, 2009, 05:08:07 am »
Having been inspired by a post on the forums I decided to build a 3z level deep reservoir, on top of a mountain. Now to get the water up I apparently need 140 power, meaning a single water wheel wont do. So I tried connecting 3 water wheels (cause you cant have too much power) in serial, but apparently that does not work.

Possible Design:

Am I going to have to do something like this or  is there some way to connect 3 water wheels connected together for maximum power?

DF Gameplay Questions / Invisible Elf Village
« on: May 14, 2009, 01:15:06 pm »
Hey gang, 's me again.

Deciding it would be fun to mess around with a few elves, like building a doom tower that would drown the entire valley, I recently set out to digg out a fortress underneath what the map identified as an elven village.

Now I understand that village may be a wide definition, but there are NO BUILDINGS what so ever... only various elves standing around the map picking their nose and looking lustfully at the trees.

Did something go wrong or are elves truly too dumb to build a place to live? I swear the last village I dugg into had actuall buildings, and a 3z level tower built out of one of the hills...  :-\

And is there a way to ensure maximum numbers of villages in world creation?

EDIT: Spelling and a question

DF Gameplay Questions / A Watery Grave Perhaps
« on: May 12, 2009, 05:17:35 pm »
Hey people got a quick question:

I have the basic stuff down to running a fort, and want to experiment a little with water traps (as magma traps tend to burn holes in my fort and lead to large amounts of fun.) While reading Boatmurdred I came across the bit where dorfs were washed away by the river, and I was just wondering: seeing as how theres water pressure in the game, could it be used as fire hoses?

The idea goes a little something like this:

<channel going to large above ground water tower>
                   <flood gate to hallway>
<door><door><door><hallway><deep hole going down 3 z lvls.>
                              <door>
                              <stairs up to the outside>

In theory, could I use the water to "wash" invaders into the hole, slam a drawbridge over the hole and continue to fill it (thorugh a grate) until the invaders hit their heads on the bridge and drown?

DF Community Games & Stories / Shortest Game
« on: April 06, 2009, 08:07:51 pm »
I have long wanted to build a coastal fortress, then extend it into the sea and finaly sever my ties with the main land. This was the idea that motivated me to choose a 3x4 piece of coast.

So first time I enter the map:
The dwarves have apparently decided to drag the cart with all our supplies down into the surf, thus giving me roughly 7 turns before the waves wash in and everyone dies...

Second time:
In true dwarf style they repeat the last mistake, only this time we are all in agreeance that we shall not fail! everyone is a miner and we dig dig dig for our lives... which worked until they hit solid rock and slowed down and the tide swallowed them.

Third time:
O joy, this time we start in the surf yet again, only this time there appears to be next to no ocean, good! We barely have time however to dig into the cliff face before the water hits, only this time one of the settlers survive, walling himself inside... with no pickaxe to dig a way out... starvation, dehydration and dementia follow suit. Apparently he was trying to make some sort of carving when he finaly kicked the bucket... wish he could have finished it so we could have seen what his last thoughts were off... I bet it would have been a Helmspawn and a tankard of ale.

Fourth time to be continued. (I refuse to give up on this location and will do whatever it takes!)

So yea, while the little buggers may not react to well to water, there WILL be a waterkeep one of these days!

DF Gameplay Questions / How far can a marksdwarf ... mark?
« on: April 06, 2009, 07:50:24 pm »
Hey,
I was wondering how far a normal or legendary marksdwarf can shoot. I have this idea for a tower with fortifications around the edges, 10s of Z-levels into the sky, only I have no idea if there is any point to have marksdwarves on z-lvl 10... also if they could shoot across the 6 wide moat.

Any ideas?

DF Gameplay Questions / Taking the high ground
« on: March 11, 2009, 08:29:28 pm »
I was just wondering what the rules are for standing one Z level above the ground (say, ontop of a wall) with a marksdwarf and shooting down at enemies.

could I build a doubble layer wall with a fortification on top and still be able to hit the unfriendlies below?
