DF Suggestions / Definable Rock Drop Rate
« on: May 05, 2012, 01:34:51 pm »
Yet another simple suggestion here. Maybe the percent rate at which rock drops when mining could be affected by an init file option or something, Toady?

I, for one, enjoy having impossibly ludicrous amounts of rock to fiddle with.

Life Advice / Wired connection for a wireless desktop
« on: December 28, 2011, 05:32:49 pm »
So, I have a [relatively] new computer, and have been using it happily for say... about 4 months.

The problem is, it's got a strictly wireless connection as it stands. Which is remarkably unstable when I attempt to use it to play anything like, say, Team Fortress 2, Starcraft... Battlefield 3... anything like that basically.

So what I'm hoping to do is find some means of getting an actual wired (?) connection set up somehow, since I'm reasonably sure it would be more stable.

I've been looking at USB/Ethernet adapters on amazon and such, but I was hoping to get an opinion from someone else before going and buying something. I figured Bay 12 has at least a few people who know their way around this sort of thing, so I'm asking here - Should I go with a USB/Ethernet adapter, if so, would I have to get a specific variety, and if not, what other options are there?

DF Suggestions / Release Suggestion: Other Bone Products
« on: December 05, 2011, 03:33:20 pm »
So, according to the dev logs, animals in worldgen who get slaughtered seem to get all of their bones turned into vast swathes of crafts.

Since this is likely to make bone crafts something approaching worthless, I figured I'd make the suggestion of having them convert a significant percentage of bones into other bone based materials like (terribad) armor, ammunition, and for civilizations that do that sort of thing (None yet I think), bone meal. That way human cities aren't just completely flooding the market with pig bone bracelets or something like that.

Edit: On further inspection, he was talking about item distribution, so maybe this post is actually pointless.

DF Suggestions / Potential for multiple Satellites
« on: November 04, 2011, 02:09:47 am »
No, I am not advocating that we sent dwarf-based satellites into space...yet.

What I am suggesting is simple: add in a possibility that a given world will have more than one moon. I suppose the title could have been more clear.

There could either be a random chance that a given world will have multiple moons, or simply a worldgen option or something like that. Worlds with different quantities of moons could act differently in terms of tides and such if tides and such ever end up in the game.

What is already going into the game could be affected by this too, though. Individual moons could affect certain variants of were-creature. Although I imagine in most cases a were-creature would only be affected by one of the moons, it could be... different, having a dwarf that turned into a rampaging monster twice a month, or worse, turned into two different monsters each once a month.

I guess they'd probably have to be able to be differentiated somehow, though. No idea on how this would work without adding a 'local cosmos' tab or something to legends mode. Maybe the moons could be colorful... although I could see people trying to destroy one of their worlds moons if it turned out Microcline cyan.

Plus, it's a small step towards more space-related stuff. Which, as I remember correctly, exists in some form or another in the grand scheme of things.

DF General Discussion / Weaponize the Night!
« on: November 01, 2011, 01:38:43 pm »
Just as the title says. Who all is planning how they're going to work with the new creatures of the night, now that they can be your dwarves?

I, for one, intend to have were-thing woodcutters and hunters, just for that one-in-a-million situation where a goblin ambush happens during a full moon.

An ambush! Curse them!
Urist McWoodsman has transformed into a WereBear!x3
Tholtig HuntFace has transformed into a WereBear!
Om FearFish has transformed into a WereCarp!

I haven't quite worked out what I'm going to do with vampires, though, since they apparently run around murdering people... I guess I'll just have to wait and see how often they do so. ಠ_ಠ

Edit: Derp, didn't look at dwarf mode discussion. Ignore this, then.
EditEdit: Dunno why I didn't realize that one of these probably already existed...

DF Suggestions / 'Recruit' option in professions menu?
« on: October 13, 2011, 10:47:32 am »
Exactly what it says in the subject.

Elaboration: It could be nice to have a (R)ecruit to: option in the professions menu (I get the sinking feeling that's not what it's called - the one where you assign labors and work dogs <<) that, when selected, gives you a list of military squads that aren't already filled that you can assign the dwarf to.

I just figure it could add at least a little bit of simplicity to the whole process, maybe.

DF Gameplay Questions / Proper usage of new features
« on: February 19, 2011, 02:45:27 pm »
Right then. I suppose it's mostly just difficulty adjusting, but other than the following, I think I've more or less figured out how to properly use the new features. Sans modding, that is.

-Making mead: I assume 'non absorbent' means it won't let me use wooden barrels, since the reaction is Red. Do large pots work, and if so, that's kind of odd since...
-Large Pots: My dwarves don't seem to recognize these as barrels or something, because they're just leaving them in the kiln, unused.
-Rock Nut Paste: Dwarves are disinterested in using the press to turn these into press cakes and oil. Has anyone figured out exactly what they use so I can stop (Presumably) doing it wrong? I've got empty jugs, empty barrels, a pile of rock nut paste and a fair amount of confusion.
-Wax: Figured out how to use bees! Sadly, when I pressed the honeycomb, the wax only existed for about 30 seconds, apparently, since I can't find it now. I guess I'll keep looking.
-Rage!Sheep: My sheep are assaulting other animals that stand near them. No broken limbs thus far.
-Wool?: <_<; How long after shearing them can you re-shear sheep? Their wool is currently 'somewhat long', so I sort of figured it would work again, but apparently not. Also, the wool from the previous shearing disappeared while I was still spinning it.

General Discussion / Flu Remedies
« on: December 27, 2010, 07:29:40 pm »
So. I recently came down with a pretty bad flu. (The full description would include the phrase 'both ends' so I'm not going to mention that :-\.) In the interest of sharing, what do you all do when you've got one?

Myself, I go through roughly the following process:

1) Wait until I'm done vomiting for at least 4 hours or so.
2) Start on diet of crackers and peppermint tea until I recover enough to start eating to recover all the delightful electrolytes and such I lost in step 1.

DF Gameplay Questions / Whoops.
« on: December 18, 2010, 11:35:37 pm »
Right then. Pretty straightforward screw-up here.

I accidentally (I'm actually perfectly serious about this) deconstructed a Trade Depot out from under the elves. Apparently my carpenter decided to take his time taking down the temporary depot and the elves picked it just as it was getting taken apart. Instead of the perfectly good Pitchblende depot 2 feet away.
Their goods are now exploded all over the area it used to be.
I'm not quite ready to start getting besieged yet (Shiny new fortress, more or less), so is there any way I can give them all their crap back? They moved to the proper trade depot right afterwards, so I'm wondering if I can trick them into trading me back my useless junk crafts I handed them in exchange for their junk.

Alternatively, what's a really fast way to elf-proof a fortress that doesn't require magma?

DF Bug Reports / [31.01] My Dwarf has broken.
« on: April 03, 2010, 05:07:56 pm »
I'm not entirely sure what has occurred here, myself. I grabbed a random immigrant blacksmith (note: still with immigrant status. Not sure how this may have affected him) and stuck him in the militia with another guy (who actually does something.). At first he just kind of goofed around (individual combat training that does nothing)... then I tried to make them do something effective training-wise.

He is now labeled as having no job. The idler count in the corner lists the number of idle dwarves minus one- him. When he's the only idler, there are no idlers. He does nothing- ever. I'm not even entirely certain that he eats anymore. He won't do civilian work, he won't follow military orders, and more importantly, when I tried to pull him out of the militia and put him in his own squad for execution purposes... he crashed Dwarf fortress altogether.

Any thoughts?

DF Modding / Your modding mistakes
« on: December 20, 2009, 10:53:00 pm »
We all make mistakes. Especially when modding. Sometimes they're blatantly obvious, sometimes you don't notice until it's far too late. It seemed like an interesting idea to ask what everyone's most Fun errors while modding were, and the consequences of the mistake.

Don't click any links unless you like getting spoiled.

This would be mine from several months ago. I think it actually got mentioned by someone last month. A bit picture heavy at the start.
Basically,
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

...On a more recent note, my elves have been trying to sell:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The metal this is made of, incidentally, is still deep and shouldn't be showing up like this. I don't think the elves are allowed to make that either. :-\

So, what are your favorite/biggest/most Fun mistakes?
And if anyone has any thoughts on that recent bit of weird...

DF Modding / Modded woods and how to prevent their misuse.
« on: July 16, 2009, 11:59:41 pm »
Is it possible to prevent a kind of wood from being used in wagons and NPC trading goods? I've put this in my RAWs:
[MATGLOSS_WOOD:ELF]
   [NAME:petrified elves][ADJ:elven]
   [TILE:226]
   [PREFSTRING:terrified expression]

And it's just awkward when the elves show up with petrified elf flutes to trade. ::)

Also, the humans showed up with a wagon made of them. :o

(Petrified elves originally from assorted silliness mod.)

DF Suggestions / Mat based building destroyer.
« on: July 15, 2009, 03:07:30 pm »
(Searched for building destroyer related posts and didn't find anything like this... here goes nothing.)

As it stands, Random Troll #37 can knock down a series of 50 *Adamantine Doors*, but an entire army of goblins is stopped in their tracks by, say, a xXPlywood doorXx.
I would suggest that the [BUILDING_DESTROYER] variety tags be altered to be based off of the material of the item.
So a goblin could take down a wooden door ([BUILDING_DESTROYER:WOOD]), Trolls could take down...eh, let's go with... bronze and any stones weaker than bronze ([BUILDING_DESTROYER:BRONZE]), and...
...
HFS could probably take down anything weaker than adamantine. The only problem I can see is how to keep people from just putting up adamantine defenses everywhere.

Thoughts?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Odd Stockpile Behavior
« on: June 16, 2009, 06:09:57 pm »
Apparently if you take a stockpile and de-designate the area between two of more chunks of it (so that the stockpile doesn't exist between said chunks), the chunks all consider themselves to be a single stockpile.

 ???
I have no idea how the dwarves decide what part of the stockpile to put stuff in. Presumably they put items in the one closest to them.

DF General Discussion / I may never Mod again... [Spoilers within]
« on: June 11, 2009, 05:44:37 pm »
Right then. This whole thing is one big HFS discussion, so if you dislike spoilers, leave now.

All the unspoiled folks gone? Good, because I screwed up big time.

At some point, I decided I wanted to put a hole in the ground. Straight down to the HFS. And I used goblins.

I succeeded. But I didn't see this coming.

"That demon doesn't look very healthy..."

"..How does a tentacle demon even assume a fetal position?

"Oh. That's how."

"Oh Armok, Urist, what are you doing?!"

"Appropriately named, this engraving."

"I never thought I'd feel sorry for a spirit of fire."

"What horrible thing was bad enough to terrify this one?"

 ???
I made a few races adventurer-able. I didn't expect it to do this.
I'm pretty sure even Armok is backing away from this world, slowly, at this point.

...Admittedly, I laughed when I saw the elf violating the demon engraving. I'm losing my mind, I'm sure.

There's more horror waiting in there for me to look at. I'm not sure if I want to open DF anymore though. :-[
