DF Modding / Stop grass from being killed?
« on: September 12, 2010, 04:05:12 am »
I'm honestly pretty sick of seeing my jungle embark turn into a desert just because seven dwarves decide to walk around it!

Is there any way to change the rate at which grass/terrain changes ? I'm much more a fan of grass and such.

Or perhaps, turn it off completely.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Smashing 18,000 Stone & FPS Question
« on: September 01, 2010, 08:33:00 pm »
I'm building a massive above ground fort right now, and just from the stone dug out ABOVE ground I have 18,000 stone, with 6,000 in red [I assume this is constructions and stone used in floors, etc]

With such a huge amount of stone, I have read that every single stone gets checked for pathing calculations when doing building and such. If I start forbidding tons of stone or perhaps smashing it, can I reduce my FPS? If mass forbids are just as effective as smashing, then I'd like to find out.

Anyone happen to definitively be able to answer this?

DF Modding / Remove logs & others from 'Construction' choices?
« on: August 31, 2010, 08:30:07 pm »
I'm honestly utterly sick and tired of having to scroll through five pages to find 'dolomite' or 'gneiss' due to the presence of things like 'tin bar' and 'fifty billion types of wood!'

I don't ever want to build shit out of bars OR wood, and you're making me cry here!

99% of my time in DF is wasted right now finding the exact material I want due to the fact that since I am building a 4x4 totally above ground fort, every single construction must be a scrolling nightmare.

I will award one hug and internet to anyone who can help me figure out a way to remove anything but blocks and stones from construction options if it is possible so I do not shoot myself in the head out of frustration.

With love,

The guy with a guy in his mouth

P.S. Stuff like this makes me wish Toady would just let the guy who did Goblin Camp or whatever help him out with the UI like Baughn. This stuff is bananas!

DF Gameplay Questions / MEND HIS BONES, YA DWARFY BASTARD!
« on: August 31, 2010, 12:31:55 am »
For the LIFE of me I cannot seem to get my doctors to mend the bones of dwarves. One of my miners survived a collapse with broken limbs, but despite his broken bones is floppin around, continuing to do his job while my doctor seems to refuse to heal his bones.

I have gypsum powder, however it does not seem to want to be stocked in my hospital, no matter how many damn coffers I build. Buckets, water, beds next to traction benches, a doctor with the labors turned on..

I can't figure it out! Is the fact that the gypsum is not being stocked preventing this? And if so, how do I get the damn stuff to go into the coffers!

I can't bear the thought of a miner with every bone in his body being broken, but he still carries on despite his injuries.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Getting early magma while staying alive?
« on: August 28, 2010, 10:15:48 pm »
I constantly find myself with little or no metal industry due to the fact that it seems like a gigantic project to pump up magma to my fort proper. One day takes a year or two of creation if started right from the beginning of the embark.

Magma pistons don't really appeal to me due to the nature of it being a one-time deal, so I'm interested in learning how to basically manage digging right down to magma from the start and building workshops near the magma itself.

My biggest problem seems to be dealing with cavern/magma creatures. Aside from walling off the area which may be difficult at the beginning, how can I gain early early access to magma without putting the fort into too much danger?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Do you change dwarf speed?
« on: August 24, 2010, 04:13:12 pm »
If so, to how much? And do you ever reverse it?

I'm getting to the point where normal non-megaproject forts are getting kinda boring and I want to embark on a megaproject, but I have never changed the default Dwarf speed despite knowing how.

Is this considered a huge cheat? I know lots of people do this when their FPS drops but I am wondering if it is considered extremely poor 'sportsmanship'

Just figured I'd see the community opinion.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Stairs/Hallway pathing optimization
« on: August 19, 2010, 08:26:19 pm »
I have seen tons of threads and helpful ideas on how to deal with pathing and such to reduce FPS lag, but a gigantic amount of these seem to be conflicting or seem to not work.

Right now I use the following:
Z 0

.UUU.__________________________.UUU.
.....__________________________.....
.DDD.__________________________.DDD.

Z +/- 1

.DDD.__________________________.DDD.
.....__________________________.....
.UUU.__________________________.UUU.

D= down stair, U = up stair, ____ 3-square wide hallways

I just have two or three major staircases in thie manner and the entire fort built up and down z-levels with the rooms in-between the staircases.

But I want to optimize pathing! Perhaps 5-square wide hallways, and more stairs? Help ! :(
