Other Games / Space Station 13: Urist McStation
« on: February 20, 2013, 06:54:08 pm »
Claiming the OP and setting some thread rules before it becomes a disaster this time, per instructions of Toady One the Great.

THREAD RULES:
  • No discussion of admin-ing style of other servers.
  • No personal attacks.
  • No ban discussion, except as directly related to Urist McStation.  Please discuss bans of other servers somewhere else; the bruised feelings tend to get the general discussion thread locked.

Space Station 13...
...is an RPG running on the BYOND game making engine, simulating life aboard Nanotrasen Space Station 13.  Engineers, doctors, botanists, scientists, security, the captain, and many more live on Space Station 13, keeping everyone happy and healthy.  Until the !!FUN!! starts, anyway.

Play...
...as one of the denizens of Space Station 13, performing your assigned duties to keep the station running and productive, but...one of you may be a traitor!  Perform your secret corporate espionage, and escape!   Or perhaps you're a changeling, disguised to absorb DNA from the unsuspecting humans aboard the station!  There are also revolution, cult, and many more possible modes, including secret, where nobody knows what mode is being played.

Urist McStation...
...is running a custom fork of the tgstation BayStation12 code base.  Several members of the SS13 community expressed a desire for a server that wasn't completely clownish, while not being too hardcore on requiring roleplay.  Roleplay is encouraged on Urist McStation, but players will not be punished for minor slips of character.  For example, medical hacking doors is fine, security performing major surgery is frowned upon.

Resources for new players, and other items of interest:

  • Urist McStation Discord.  Home of up-to-the-minute discussion of the server.
  • Tgstation Wiki.  This has guides for new players, job descriptions, and details on how most of the systems on our sister station work.  Experience there is mostly applicable on Urist McStation.
  • Space Station 13 Community site.  Has lists of Space Station 13 servers which may be useful.
  • Urist McStation IRC.  If you'd like to ask questions or help with coding, stop by!

So I recently got X3: Terran Conflict on the Steam midweek sale.  I'd heard it was a bit like a single player EVE Online, which seems accurate so far.  I really like the concept, and have mostly enjoyed it so far, but have run into a number of issues:

1) Saves only occur at bases.
2) Auto pilot is terrible, and has a tendency to powderize you against random structures.  Especially irritating when combined with 1).
3) Game suspends when alt-tabbed, or when not the window of focus.

Considering the game is largely telling your ships to fly around, then twiddling your thumbs while they fly, 3) is a nigh unforgivable sin.  I don't think EVE would have anywhere near its current fan base if you couldn't do other things while your ships were busy.

I've heard X3 is heavily moddable.  Does anyone know of any mods or fan patches that fix any of the above issues?  I haven't had much luck searching.

General Discussion / Looking for a gaming keyboard
« on: April 01, 2012, 09:12:56 pm »
I've been looking to upgrade my keyboard, and I've been a bit frustrated.  I really only have three requirements:  1) Lots of macro keys, 2) Support at least 5 simultaneous keypresses, preferably more, and 3) no backlighting on keys or backlighting can be turned off.

I've been surprised at the number of keyboards that don't meet the last two items.  I've run across a number of "gaming keyboards" that don't do anything to support multiple keypresses, which I thought was fairly basic.  3) just appears to be the same trend I've seen in everything else: "It can't be a gaming [insert item here] if it doesn't have cool blue lights on it!"  My computer is in my bedroom, and I'd really prefer not to have yet another glowing object, particularly one that would be hard to block the light from.

Any thoughts?  What keyboards do you guys use?  Any particularly good or bad traits you've found about them?

EDIT: Newegg currently has a refurbished G510 up on sale.  Any 510 owners?

Just picked this up on the sale...any Bay12ers who want to play, or any tips for getting started from more experienced players?

What restrictions are there on trading Steam Gifts?

Trading a Steam Gift is very similar to sending a gift to someone; just that once it is traded that user can then either trade it again, or open it for themselves. There are no restrictions on territory.

Apparently Valve has decided to quit banhammering those who have been trading gifts to get around regional price differences...I'm intrigued.

Exactly what it says on the tin...was working on starting a fort, and then "what the hell? there's blood EVERYWHERE!?!"  Screenshots spoilered below.

"Her head's fat is gone."?  Also complaining of minor injuries
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
She's also faint...considering the amount of blood on the next two shots, I'm not surprised.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Pools of blood in the middle...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Smears all over the walls

[Note: the three squares immediately below the constructed floor are also floors with pools of blood, not magma.]

So any ideas what exactly happened?  Her head's fat is missing, her blood has been flung over half the volcano, and she's complaining of being faint...the only thing I can think of is her proximity to the magma caused the fat in her body to boil off and explode...

EDIT:  Scratch that...she was injured heavily over her entire head, and bled to death shortly thereafter.  Still, any ideas as to cause of death?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Power for mega-projects?
« on: December 22, 2009, 11:00:59 pm »
Hi everyone,

I've recently been attempting to flood my map with magma, albeit unsuccessfully.  My first attempt involved two side by side pump stacks drawing magma from two Z-levels down from the top of my magma pipe.  I powered these stacks using a small windmill farm built on a platform above the stacks.  However, I found that this quickly drained the magma pipe and cut off my supply of magma, resulting in a rather disappointing lava puddle rather than world incineration as desired.

I have therefore started on a second attempt.  This time, I'm tapping into the magma pipe a few Z-levels from the bottom of the map to prevent my pumps from running out of magma. I'm using 6 parallel pumps spanning 17 Z-levels.  However, a pump stack of this size presented the problem of powering such a monstrosity, as this will demand 1020 power.

My question to those who have made "flood the world" devices is: how does one power such a contraption?

I'm currently attempting a massive perpetual motion waterwheel farm as shown below, but I'm having major issues with maintaining theoretical peak power.

Any thoughts?

DF Gameplay Questions / Spoilers - HFS Coffin problem
« on: May 03, 2009, 10:31:34 am »
I've got my dwarves trying to bury the poor souls from the demon pits, and completely ignoring the corpse of my champion who just died in battle against a horde of goblin archers.  Is there a way to get my dwarves to ignore the bones down in the pits?

Hello all,

I've been attempting to get Dwarf Fortress 40d11 to run natively under 32-bit Ubuntu Intrepid with little success.  I did follow the readme and at least attempt to install the necessary libraries, but wasn't quite sure which versions of some of these libraries I needed.

My current issue is that DF runs when started from the "df" script, and frequently the splash screen and intro will play as well before displaying the menu. However, as soon as the window is clicked on, it goes completely black.  The sound continues playing and if you remembered where you were on the menu, you can still scroll down and hit exit blind, so it's not freezing up.

Any ideas as to what could be causing my problem?  I'd be happy to post any system info you guys need if you can tell me where to find it.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Lame artifacts!
« on: April 23, 2009, 11:51:32 pm »
I was getting really excited when I had a dwarf claim a metal forge, and gather adamantine, three different kinds of gems, and bone and shell...had my fingers crossed for an awesome weapon to kill demons with.  Instead, I got this:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Yes, that's not one, not two, but three images of itself on there.  It's not like I don't have other artifacts, although this is far and away my most valuable one.  At least I got a legendary blacksmith out of it.

The only redeeming quality seems to be that's it's worth 758400 dwarf bucks...can I still stick it in a noble's room for furniture?
