DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / GET BACK HERE YOU COWARDS!!! >:(
« on: April 28, 2011, 06:46:55 pm »
<rant>

YOU COWARDS!!  How DARE you call yourselves dwarves, you stinking sons-of-elves!!  5 guards, 5 pack animals, and you STILL ran away the first time a Giant Badger bit one of your camels!!

Who spotted the goblin amubush on the other side of the map?  We did.   :o
Who played pincushion to distract the goblin bowmen? We did.   :(
Who slaughtered the goblin bowmen, and left them in 4 times as many pieces as they came in? We did.   ;D
Who ran away?  YOU DID!!!   >:( >:( >:(

I need those gold nuggets and marble boulders.  The baroness wants gold and marble items, and we don't have any on the map.  I've given you huge profits.  You've never lost anyone (unlike the poor humans, who discovered the last ambush).  WHY DID YOU RUN AWAY?!?!?  WHY?!?!?

Bloody cowardly elven bastards.

</rant>

Seriously, 5 merchants w/pack animals, 5 guards, the only animal that got hurt was one of the camels.  It ended up passing out on a cage trap, which probably caused the caravan to leave.  Not sure, I was distracted by the squad of bowgobs on the other side of the map.  2/3 of my militia (4 midlevel axedwarves) + the caravan guards, nobody chasing the Giant Badgers (they're on my roof right now, just chillin'), and nobody noticed the camel being attacked right outside the entrance to my fort?  Right next to the 1st waypoint on 2 patrol routes?  Really bad timing in there somewhere.  Now the baroness is gonna demand heads because we don't have any gold or marble or naked moledog leather.

So I picked a terrifying/untamed wilds embark, and brought along a couple of teacher dwarfs to start my military.  As soon as I unpause, a pair of harpies attack.  2 unarmed, unarmored dwarfs and 5 dogs made slow work of the harpies, and the non-commander got a vicious red wound on the upper arm, with sensory and motor nerve damage.  Quickly built a hospital (a bed in the middle of the hall, and no medical skills), and Urist McWounded was nowhere to be found.  Zoom to him, and he's chopping down trees while faint and unhappy (blood loss, no weapon skill, no civilian skill, so he's "complained about the draft", "complained about relieved from duty", and "suffered a serious injury" with no happy thoughts to balance it).  His wound eventually healed, leaving a "large, jagged scar".  He still has nerve damage, though, and his "ability to grasp is somewhat impaired".  This hasn't stopped him from being the first to charge into a fight, and he hasn't had any trouble since that first battle.

When summer rolled around, Urist McOnlyAFleshWound had killed a total of 6 harpies and 2 ogres, with no additional wounds.  Unfortunately he was a little slow chasing the badgers, so the militia commander got all eight of them.  We've gone from no weapons/armor to a mix of bronze and bone armor, and +bronze battle axes+.  As soon as the magma forges are online, we'll upgrade to steel, and mix in 6-8 migrants who have dabbling or better military skills.  I think they'll go well with the Stray Giant Badgers guarding the entrances from thieves.  ;D

Looking forward to fighting goblins, whenever they get off their lazy butts and decide to start ambushing (currently Autumn of year 2).

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dude! Where's my wagon?
« on: June 24, 2010, 01:12:00 am »
So I decided to gen a world with [VOLCANO_MIN:200] and [PERIODICALLY_ERODE_EXTREMES:0].  I got 316 rejects, and then a wonderful map covered in volcanoes.  As I'm looking around for a good location, I see a local map that's half-covered in red "masterwork" symbols, representing cliffs that are 20+ z-levels.  "Hmmm...this looks interesting."  After embarking, I find myself looking at maybe a dozen tiles of stone, 2 stacks of dwarfs/animals/supplies, and a lot of open space.

"Dude!  Where's my wagon?!?"

Turns out the center embark tile is a spike.  A 69 level tall spike.  The base covers the entire embark square.  The game placed my dwarfs almost at the top of the spike, and there is nowhere for the wagon.  Now I have to drag my supplies all the way down to the plains so I have somewhere to build my smelter & forge so I can make my picks.
