DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Aw <bleep>
« on: April 14, 2011, 04:07:52 pm »
So I was bored and decided to I'd try the minimalist challenge off the wiki.  Should be pretty simple, right?

The only site in the entire world I could find with volcano, infinite water source, clay, and sand happened to be very mountainous.  So naturally, DF decided it would be funny to NOT generate a wagon.  The challenge kind of requires wood from the wagon.  I found my anvil laying on the ground near the dwarves starting location and stocks says my copper nuggets were somewhere, but I never found them.  No trace of a wagon, though.

I was pretty much screwed at this point.  I didn't have enough material to build a depot even though I could easily survive until it arrived.

Another idea I had was to waltz over the the volcano and use one of the copper nuggets to build a smelter, smelt the other ore for copper, tear down the smelter, use the ore to build a forge and forge a pick...brilliant, right?  The volcano is sitting at the bottom of a 30 or 50 z-level hole...

Salvage thoughts?  Your own horror stories of how glitched mechanics screwed you over?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Darn Possession Moods
« on: May 25, 2010, 09:00:47 pm »
While I'm sure this is just statistically really bad luck, I keep getting possessed dwarves.  Back in 40d, about three-quarters of all moods were possessions.  Now in v31.0x, ALL of my moods thus far have been possessions.  Okay, clearly possessions must be weighted more heavily than any other type of mood, but this is just absurd.

DF General Discussion / O Christmas Rock
« on: December 02, 2009, 04:46:58 pm »
O Christmas Rock, O Christmas Rock
How is the Microcline so painful
O Christmas Rock, O Christmas Rock
How is the Microcline so painful

Not only in the Summertime
But even in winter is thy prime

O Christmas Rock, O Christmas Rock
How is the Microcline so verdent
O Christmas Rock, O Christmas Rock
Much pain doth thou bring me

O Christmas Rock, O Christmas Rock
Much pain doth thou bring me
For every year the Christmas Rock
Burns our eyes with caustic blue

O Christmas Rock, O Christmas Rock
Much pain doth thou bring me

O Christmas Rock, O Christmas Rock
Thy blueness blocks out the sun

O Christmas Rock, O Christmas Rock
Thy blueness blocks out the sun
Each boulder hold a smashed goblin
That makes each mug to sparkle bright

O Christmas Rock, O Christmas Rock
Thy blueness blocks out the sun

~~~
Not the best re-write, but I just felt like doing it quick.  I was inspired by a thread in Dwarf Mode Discussion.
DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Interesting Embark Location
« on: June 10, 2009, 08:07:11 pm »
Here's an interesting embark.  I ended up in a little nook in a mountain.  Immediately there was a collapse into the bottomless pit, not unusual.  What's unusual is that something's missing...
Yeah, I found it way over here...
I found this embark interesting.  It usually puts me on top of a mountain, not in a tiny little nook, without my wagon.
I'm not sure if this is known to everyone but me or not, but it demonstrates a few things.  For instance, it shows that upon embark, the game places the dwarves first.  It shows that if the wagon won't fit where the dwarves are, it'll get moved.  It shows that the wagon will stay on the same z-level as the dwarves(even if that's a ways away).  Probably derived from the old 2d days or else the wagon would have been directly above the dwarves.
You guys see this much?  I've certainly never had to go looking for the wagon before.
