« on: July 30, 2010, 11:10:39 am »

DF Gameplay Questions / Dwarfs will not make high boots - 31.12
« on: July 26, 2010, 08:40:14 pm »
I noticed I couldn't find "steel high boot" on the job manager. Then I realized it was missing from the forge too. No leather high boots either. Were high boots taken out recently?

Sometimes it works, sometimes nothing happens. While designating the mouse will suddenly go dead, and after not working for a bit suddenly it starts designating again. I even had a few crashes while trying to mouse designate.

Already submitted it (#2811). Just wanted to know if anyone else was having this problem.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Tune World Gen z-lvls for FPS - *SPOILERS*
« on: July 16, 2010, 02:14:32 pm »
I need to know how to cut *way* down on z-levels. I suspect that where my fps drain is coming from. In 40d I would have 100 fps till at least 20 dwarfs at 6x6 embark. In 31 I embark with 50 on a flat plain 4x4. I need to know more about what the world gen parameters are to experiment with this.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / I finally survived the first wave of orcs
« on: March 19, 2010, 08:30:56 pm »
Embarked with 4 armor/shield users, an armor smith, a weapon smith, and a grower. I brought an anvil, a pittance of booze, just enough seeds to get started, no food, 2 dogs, 40 cassiterite, and copper nuggets.

Started by forging a bronze axe and a pick with the 3 wagon wood. Dug a farm, started the magma forge and smelter, and got the 4 recruits started with wrestling. I spent the next 2 seasons smelting bronze and making full suits of plate over chain armor. Then tragedy; before she finished an imp popped out of the magma channel, luckily the first fireball missed. The second fireball caused several injuries but then the wrestling squad showed up. Strangely, in about half a season she got up out of bed like nothing happened, all the injuries healed. Fastest I've ever seen a dwarf recover, ever. She was then able to finish the full suits of armor. The grower was struggling to keep us fed and inebriated during all this but got the job done. The elves came and I traded them a pittance of stone crafts for a little food, they didn't have much. When the recruits were legendary wrestlers I forged some bronze axes and they started training with those. Finally I mined out a nice stairway and narrow corridor bottleneck to ambush the orcs in the fortress and chained the 2 war dogs nearby.

Then at the start of winter the orcs came, right on schedule. There was a mauler, 7 carves, and 8 wrestlers. I ordered everyone inside and set the ambush. The poor bastards never saw it coming. The ambush room was covered in body parts and armor, the stairwell was soaked in blood. They never even made it to the dogs. There were no injuries. One dwarf had single-handedly massacred 10 of them without breaking a sweat and the other 3 killed the rest.

2 minutes later a training accident destroyed someones eye, ear, neck, and brain. He quickly suffocated to death in bed. Oh well.

I always wondered how you guys handled the first wave of orcs without secluding the fortress or stacking inaccessible crossbow dwarfs. Usually the sweep through my fortress like they're clearing it with mp5's. I feel like I've accomplished something. Next on my list is controlled forest fires - for science.

DF Gameplay Questions / What triggers a goblin retreat?
« on: March 17, 2010, 08:50:23 am »
I had a rather large siege with 5 groups of goblins including 2 leaders. When 2 of the groups got to the locked front gate we shot a few of them through some elevated fortifications. About 4 of them died. That group started to retreat, the one next to them did not. One of the groups not yet halfway around the outer wall started to retreat, one right in front of them did not.

When all was said and done the melee team ran out to do battle with the groups that didn't run (there was much violence, casualties, and limbs flying; I only had trainees). But it left me wondering if there are predetermined events that trigger a goblin retreat, such as the death of a leader - which did not happen - or perhaps the death of a squad leader - which might have happened. Or perhaps with each goblin casualty each squad that remains makes a roll to determine if they flee in terror?

Thoughts?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / What fort had the epic magma drop trap?
« on: March 06, 2010, 10:04:22 pm »
It was a long corridor built out of solid iron with a floor of iron grates. A dwarf pulls a lever, the bridges holding the magma above retract dropping the payload of magma on the invaders. It drains straight through to the floor. Then the green glass pumps automatically reloaded the trap within seconds. It was an epic video. I'd like to show it to my friend but I can't find it or remember the name of the fortress. Anyone remember?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / He is in a constant state of internal rage
« on: January 17, 2010, 09:33:00 pm »
Obviously I made him my expedition leader. Recently saw another trait I've never seen before as well. It said something like "Doesn't mind working outdoors occasionally". What are some other character traits that you don't see very often?

I like to watch movies or other media while playing Dwarf Fortress on the same computer. This creates a problem since DF is so processor intensive and causes the video to skip. I have figured out how to fix this.

Open the task manager (ctrl+shift+esc). Go to the processes tab and locate dwarfort.exe. Right click it and select Set Priority > BelowNormal.

This should prevent DF from hogging processor cycles and let the video play smoothly at the cost of a few fps. Enjoy :D

DF Gameplay Questions / cancel Recover Pet: Animal inaccessible
« on: May 16, 2009, 08:12:43 pm »
My favorite Weaver has been saying this for over a year. Sometimes 30x in a row. I can't find his damn blue jay anywhere. I think it might have been accidentally dumped while in an animal trap. I can see the animal when I'm in the 'q' menu for a cage, but if I assign it to that cage all the animal haulers complain: Animal inaccessible.

How do I find this damn pet bird? I can't zoom to it from the animal stocks menu or anywhere else. If I can't stop his constant error messages I'm going to recruit him and station him in the carp infested river.

Thanks guy.
