Other Games / Rogue System, a DCS-like in space
« on: June 14, 2015, 04:49:10 am »

Hello, dwellers of the "Other Games" subforum. I'm here to spread the word of a certain very hardcore space flight sim. Think of it as Orbiter turned into a proper game, or DCS in space. Superb sound design, great ambiance and realism. Done by just one guy at the time of this post. Oh, and I'm not affiliated to the project in any way, but I am publicizing it to you because I think you should throw all your money in its general direction.

Here are some tutorials showing how meaty it is:

DF Modding / How to remove castes?
« on: July 13, 2014, 11:05:19 am »
I have a creature defined with COPY_TAGS_FROM, but I want this creature to come only in female, no males. How can I undefine the male caste?
Also, can I use CV_REMOVE_TAG for something like ALL_ACTIVE ([CV_REMOVE_TAG:ALL_ACTIVE])?

I'll paste here some of the code I have. These are for my Samurai Mod.

Tilesets and Graphics / [ASCII][20x24] Curses Subtle
« on: July 11, 2014, 08:27:03 am »
Hello. I'm posting a tileset I made for my personal use. Similar to Nagidal's Classic ASCII tileset, but with a subtler emboss effect and more pixelated (I've added resolution detail only to certain parts of the characters, adding smoothness while retaining old-schoolness).

It's basically the default ASCII curses tileset enlarged to 200% and slightly shaded. It works beautifully with true CGA colors. Nothing to brag about, but I thought I'd share because I really like using it.

As you can see, it keeps the original look while being easy on the eyes when reading text:

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Did I witness goblin mutiny?
« on: June 29, 2014, 04:27:27 am »
Today my fortress was attacked by two simultaneous goblin ambushes. Upon reading the announcement I prepared my trusty militia and waited for the enemy at the gates.
Leading the army was a goblin hammer lord. As soon as I unpaused the game, the goblin soldiers tore the hammer lord to pieces. And proceeded towards my fortress.

What was all that about?

This simple script will extract words from language files and put them a word per line, for easy automatic translation or treatment. It can also read that list and put the translated words back in their place.

Always backup your work! I take no responsibility for anything this script may do to you, your computer, your pets or your dwarves.

This is how it works. It has two modes "extraction" and "injection".

df_langex.py e langfile wordlist
This extracts the words from langfile and creates (or overwrites) wordlist. You can now work with wordlist.

df_langex.py i wordlist langfile
When you are happy with your words, give it wordlist and it will overwrite langfile replacing the words in it with those in the list. Note that the same langfile should be used for extraction and injection, otherwise the word count won't match and things will get messed up.

Mod Releases / The Samurai Mod 0.2 (4 Jan 2014)
« on: January 03, 2014, 09:33:23 pm »
I have finally decided to attempt my first foray into modding in the form of
\\----------------------//
THE SAMURAI MOD
(working title)
_----------------------_
Starting simple, I have decided to implement various medieval Japanese weapons and pieces of armor and clothing in DF.
A race or two, castes, equipment and other stuff could follow, potentially.

But for now, this is what comes in the package:

Currently implemented

Houken Kazokutachi
These are a human civilization following the theme of feudal Japan. Their rulers are shoguns, who in turn appoint daimyos as military and civil administrators*, who have the samurai at their command.
In fortress mode you will have a daimyo as the leader of your settlement (a noble, mind you).

* Historically inaccurate as shoguns needed the support of daimyos to maintain their rule, but since there is no unification here and no emperor, shoguns are absolute rulers here.

Changelog
0.2 Civilization added
Added a new civilization type for humans. It is playable both in adventure and in fortress mode. For now this is the only civilization which can make modded stuff.

0.1 Initial release
Added hachiwara, bokken, kaiken, kama, katana, odachi, wakizashi, shitagi, dou, hakama, fundoshi, kyahan, suneate, haidate, kabuto, mengu, kote, tabi and waraji. Weapons will probably need balancing, and armour layering is provisional.

Now, this being my first mod and all, it is very probable I will have committed heinous crimes in the way the raws are put together. I've had difficulty with layering, so if you spot any inconsistencies I'd be happy to hear about them. I'd really appreciate any feedback you may have. This includes both from the technical and the historical standpoints.

Thanks for trying it out!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / All dwarves in the world are naked
« on: January 03, 2014, 10:24:22 am »
I generated a custom world using the excellent PerfectWorldDF utility and started a brand new fortress.
A few seconds into the game everyone starts flashing with unhappiness. "What is this?" I ask myself. Well, apparently everyone is wearing nothing but a pair of socks.

It's the year 63, and migrants are naked as well. What the hell? Is this a known thing?

EDIT: I've made robes for everyone, but they don't seem to notice them. Everyone is running around naked and complaining about it. I've managed to stabilize the situation with a good dinning hall and lavish meals, but I don't know if I'll be able to pull this off. A nudist paradise?

EDIT2: Dwarven merchants are also naked, except for armor.

Uses Modest Mod and DFHack.

Other Games / Simply a "fixed" clone of Space Station 13
« on: May 17, 2013, 11:17:28 am »
I've been curious for some time now as to how interested would people be in a free, open-source clone of Spacestation 13 that doesn't try to enhance the game visually or from a gameplay point of view (unlike the long time upcoming remake (http://www.spacestation13.com).

I'm talking about a clone that stands on its own, freed from the laggy shackle of the Byond framework and with a somewhat more accessible and coherent GUI. Oh, and data driven modability. Same OK graphics and as good a sound design as the community would ultimately give it.

Leaving aside from now the issue of whether I (or somebody else) is capable of delivering, would you be interested in such a thing existing? Or are you content in what we have, and if you had to welcome something new, you would rather have the new remake that's in the making and nothing less?

I'm very interested in hearing people's opinions as well as their stance on the matter, so feel free to discuss.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Steal from caravan and store in hospital
« on: May 15, 2012, 04:11:13 pm »
I just loaded up a .07 world with the last version (.08). As soon as the dwarven caravan arrived a bunch of my dwarves went out of the fort and took a bunch of cloth pieces to "store item in hospital".

wtf

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Medical care
« on: February 15, 2012, 08:29:21 pm »
Is there any way to get medical treatment in adventure mode? Can you treat your wounds yourself (other than resting and having high recuperation)?

Even if it's not in-game at the moment, could it be modded in?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Everyone's a tree-hugger
« on: February 15, 2012, 08:23:46 am »
Be careful around wildlife. It seems if some is caught in the middle of a fight between you and something else and you happen to kill an innocent boar the whole civilization will hate and attack you.

The only way to undo this seems to be resting a while as a peasant (retire adventurer). When you start a new game with that adventurer they will no longer hate you.

Can anyone confirm this?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Noseless gopher master of a human fortress
« on: February 12, 2012, 10:10:55 am »
I have stumbled upon a human fortress with a gigantic noseless gopher as its master:

Vucar Uthgúrelcur Angzaknekol
A gigantic noseless gopher twisted into humanoid form. It has a bloated body. Its pale brown hair is unkempt. Beware its noxious secretions!
He is very fat.

Its symbol is '&' and all other creatures in the fortress are humans.
Oh, and apparently I'm in the capital.

EDIT: After my adventurer was raped to death by flying copper bolts I took a look at the legends and found this:

In the midsummer of 1, the pale brown monster Vucar Demonplagues the Terrible Skulls fooled The Confederation of Actions into believing he was a manifestation of the deity Cish Wavemorning. Cish Wave morning was a deity often depicted as a male human  ::) associated with murder, death, rivers, lakes, fish, oceans and coasts. Cool.

Then he proceeded to create the position of master "pushed by a wave of popular support".

JUST HOW COOL IS THIS GAME?!

DF Modding / Custom reactions in adventure mode
« on: November 29, 2011, 01:57:12 am »
I've been looking for this in the forums, but I can't find it. I read in the wiki additional crafting reactions can be added to the adventure mode by modding. Is it possible? I can't find knapping in the raws, could someone tell me what do I need to edit?

I know how reaction modding works (more or less), but I can't find the raw were adventure reactions are defined. Also, I've been up all night playing and I'm feeling very drowsy, so excuse me if I'm talking nonsense, or pass out.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Becoming the capital
« on: May 30, 2011, 11:10:27 am »
Hi there. I'm trying to become the capital I have 151 dwarves and the keep breeding, so I have to hurry.

I have fulfilled all requirements except the "offerings" one. According to the civs list, I have offered to the dwarven civilization 8110 dwarfbucks (8000 required), but the "capital requirements" screen says I have offered 0.

Does this mean I had to offer goods to the elven or human civilizations? (The goblin one? I just killed their leader in a siege).

What's going on here??

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Golden axe
« on: May 29, 2011, 09:04:21 am »
I got a gold battle axe artifact worth 160,800 dwarfbucks. Is gold a good material for weapons? I am tempted to sell it, but I don't want to if it's at least a decent weapon.

I have no idea who Litast Rainedcanyon is. He/she's not in my fortress and it's not a noble from any known civ. Is there a way of checking the legends while still having an active fortress?

EDIT: She was the previous general of my mother civ.

Thanks!
