DF Gameplay Questions / My waterwheels exploded?

I just built my first waterwheel contraption. I had four waterwheels side-by-side in a stream, connected to a gear (controlled by a lever), connected to a horizontal axle, connected to a pump. Everything ran great for a minute or two, then all four waterwheels "exploded", leaving logs strewn all over the area. What did I do wrong? Are four water wheels too much to drive a single gear/axle/pump? I can't remember if the lever was on or off at the moment. Perhaps such an assembly can't be stopped with a lever?
