Mafia / Beginner's Mafia: Sprint! [Pre-Game: 7/7]

Beginner's Mafia: Sprint!
Easier, Better, Faster, Stronger

Tired of the plodding pace of normal games? Just not interested in spending more than a month reading and arguing? Never manage to finish a game? Say hello to the first new run of the Sprint edition of Beginner's Mafia! Specifically designed to be great for newcomers and dabblers in Mafia, the game eschews many of the traditional rules of BMs to create a setup that is more fast-paced, fun and interesting. This game will never last more than a week! That means no waiting around, boredom or long-term commitment!

This setup puts its greatest emphasis on getting you to enjoy playing Mafia and to spark your interest in it. It still has an instructional aspect, however, and as such two ICs will be present in the game; one to play the game with you, and another to simply act as an advisor to the opposing party - the eponymous Mafia. Their primary purpose is to teach you to play Mafia, and will do everything to further that goal even after death - but keep in mind that the playing IC will still play for keeps.

Mafia Gameplay

The game of mafia has a simple concept. A large group of players known as the town plays against a smaller group of players known as the mafia. In this setup, there are nine players, with seven town and two mafia.

Before the game begins, each players is given a role and an alignment by the moderator. There are two alignments in this setup: Town and Mafia. The town outnumber the mafia, but each individual member of the town does not know the alignment of any of the other members. The mafia know the alignment of everyone on their team and they can discuss the game privately in a special mafia chat. The mafia has access to a nightkill that they may use in the Night phase, while the town occasionally has roles with abilities that are used during the night.

Once everyone has a role, the game begins in the Day phase. During the Day phase, players may discuss the game and each player has a vote that they cast publicly to lynch a player. At the end of the day after some predetermined amount of time, the player with the most votes is lynched. Lynching does two things: it reveals a player's role and alignment, and it removes a player from the game. Once lynched, a player is no longer allowed to post in the thread.

Sprint Gameplay

Sprint specifically plays much like normal mafia, but with two notable exceptions. The game is effectively Nightless: Each Day, players may collectively decide to lynch a player, but instead of advancing to a silent Night the game begins with the next Day immediately. Thus, the playerbase must talk constantly, and there is no set time to send in actions - anyone with a power role and thus a night action must send in the action during the Day. It will then occur after the lynch, before the next Day starts (like a normal game). Because of this, the game will start with a single 24 hour Night to let everyone read their PMs and the Mafia to coordinate.

Each game is run with six beginner players, one IC plus the Mafia advisor, and the game will always consist of the following roles:
  • 2 Mafia Goons - May decide each day to covertly kill someone after the lynch, before the next Day. Must survive.
  • 3 Townies - No powers, must lynch Mafia.
  • 1 Doctor - Can choose someone each day to protect from the Mafia kill. Must lynch Mafia.
  • 1 Macho Cop - Can choose someone each day to discover the alignment of. Cannot be protected by the Doctor. Must lynch Mafia.

Rules
  • Voting - Votes are cast in red and should include the name of the targeted player. Other colors may be ignored.
    • LNCP
    • Vote lordnincompoop
    • You fucking liar, LNCP! Burn in hell
    • Vote lordnin
    • Vote LN
Are all acceptable ways to cast a vote if the target is clear enough.
    • If you want to simply remove your vote, you may put unvote in red text. You must explicitly state this.  It is possible to put the name of the player you were voting afterwards, but it is not recommended as it can lead to confusion.
  • Death - When you are dead, you are prohibited from posting in the thread. You may make a single 'bah' post after you die, however, it must not contain any game-related information.
  • PMs - Never PM another player. You may freely PM the moderator to ask game-related questions.
    • Never quote anything the mod says to you.
  • Edits - Never edit your posts for any reason. You will be modkilled if you do.
  • Replacements/Activity - If you find yourself unable to play, you should request a replacement. We may try to talk you out of it if it's for any other reason besides you not having enough time to play. Since the game only lasts a week, though, please try to stick to it. It's only a week.
    • Prods may be requested for a player. If they have not posted in the thread within 24 hours, excluding weekends, they will be prodded.
    • I will modkill you if you don't post for an entire Day (48 hours). No exceptions.
    • Please be active. The greatest killer of beginner games is poor activity.
  • Day Length - Days will last 48 hours, including weekends.
  • Extensions/Shortens - There is only one available Extension for the entire game; once you use it, it's gone. It is for 24 hours and may be used at any time if 33% of players (min 2) agree. Days can be shortened to end immediately with 51% of votes (min 3).
    • Votes for extension/shorten are done in boldface. Extend, Extension, Extend it up yo, Shorten it out y'all are acceptable ways to vote for an extension/shorten
    • Extensions/shortens can be opposed by declaring opposition (Oppose Shorten/Extend, I oppose this notion!, My Oppose goes to this), and they count against the total number of votes for an extension/shorten. Extensions count as opposition to shortens and vice versa.
  • External Participation - While the game is ongoing, if you are not a player, an IC, or a mod, refrain from posting in the thread.
    • Play to win! There is no hopeless situation, so don't ever give up. And remember, be bold! You learn nothing and you gain nothing by holding back.
  • Miscellaneous -  Use of cryptographic hashing is not permitted.  If you want to have hidden/obfuscated messages in your posts for later use, come up with them using your own wetware.

Mafia / Witches' Coven: In the Heart of Darkness [GAME OVER: 4/13]
« on: April 19, 2013, 06:09:12 pm »
Witches' Coven: In the Heart of Darkness
"The evils which are perpetrated by modern witches exceed all other sin which God has ever permitted to be done...
For they are called witches (maleficae) on account of the enormity of their crimes..."
- Malleus Maleficarum, Part I Question XIV

Welcome to the third Witches' Coven!

Set in a version of Europe where legend and folklore become reality, on the cusp of its transition from the Late Middle Ages to the Renaissance, Witches' Coven follows the course of events that occurred at the beginning of the great witch hunts.

This is a novel gametype that differs heavily in content and mechanics each time it is run. Here, it is all about immersion - you as players will not just take on roles but are given an opportunity to embody residents of a richly detailed, living and breathing world. The game rewards exploration and discovery, and allows players with an affinity for inference, investigation and analysis to shine. Though it is not impossible to play the game as any other, paying attention only to the core of Mafia, that is not the appeal of this setup - should you wish a hassle-free, streamlined setup for doing just that, you may wish to seek another thread.

This is a closed game. What this means is that no roles will be published beforehand as you would see them in-game, and the presence of certain characters or roles is not guaranteed. I have made a point of including a short summary of all core roles that have shown up so far, but none of them are guaranteed to be included again and should you wish to investigate them further please refer to earlier runs of Witches' Coven.

This is not a full-out Bastard Mod. By this I mean that I will not, at any point in the game, lie to you or break your trust in me. Rules are as absolute as possible and static. Surface mechanics (the conditions and particulars of role powers, core of gameplay immediately visible, etc.) are transparent. You will not, in the game, be deliberately put in an impossible position, and the game is not deliberately unbalanced nor is it solely for my amusement. It has secrets that will reveal themselves to the inquisitive player, however; do not enter if you intend only to play this as you would a vanilla game.

Nor is this a beginner-friendly game. I strongly recommend that you have played at least one BM and two other games. I also recommend you to have played a forum Mafia game in the last six months, so I know you are not overly rusty. I make occasional exceptions, but do not expect to do well unless you have exceeded the italicised minimum, and please don't expect me to take your request seriously if you have never played a Mafia game.

Jim Groovester will be co-moderating this game with me, and will serve the same role with the same authority as I do.

Game Rules (please read, changes made):
  • It will be trusted, on behalf of both the players and the mod, that you will play according to the restrictions (if any) given and that you will play both respectfully and to fulfill your win condition to the best of your abilities.
  • All votes must be in red and bold for legibility. Unvoting before voting again is not required, but appreciated. You may vote for No Lynch. You cannot conditional vote. In case of a tie, no one will be lynched. The game is hammerless.
  • Days and Nights both span 72 hours.  Neither time span includes weekends. Nights may end earlier if all actions are in before the deadline. Days and nights end at 9PM GMT unless otherwise specified.
  • Never edit your posts for any reason, including typos.
  • Do not PM other players unless explicitly allowed.  Players with private chat access will be given a topic on QuickTopic where they may post freely.
  • Never quote any PM from the mod or any communication with them unless explicitly allowed.  You may give a general summary (for example, a roleclaim), but do not quote directly. Rulebreakers can and will be modkilled with prejudice.
  • Any requests to the moderator not in bold will be ignored.
  • Dead players may post one “bah post” to comment on their death, but it may not contain any relevant game information.  After that, please do not post.
  • You may ask for an extension or shorten by putting the respective word in bold.  Extensions require 33% of players to agree minus any players opposing, and requires at least three players. Extends are for 48 hours including weekends, and there may only be a maximum of four Extends.
  • Shortens require at least 51% of players to agree, and will end the day as soon as I can process the day end.
  • Please make an effort to post at least once daily.  If you do not post content (that is, nothing along the lines of “placeholder post”, "this is a post" or "I will post later") for 48 hours, you will be given a warning that will last the entire game.  If I don’t hear from you within 24 more hours after the warning has been given, you will be replaced or modkilled. Your third warning will be your last. Should you be inactive for more than 36 hours at any point after having received it, you will be modkilled. See also rule 12. This includes weekends.
  • If you do not post content for an entire day (72 hours minimum) you will be modkilled at the end of the day. The Day is quite long enough; there are no excuses for flaking.
  • Short-term absences need to be stated before you become absent, or I will not be able to take them into account. If you’ll be gone for a longer time, you can either PM me about it and I’ll try to accomodate, or request a replacement as below.
  • If you can no longer post, you may Request Replacement. If there is anyone in the replacement queue that person will replace you. If not, you will remain in the game until this happens even if you won't be prodded - please endeavour to post regardless.
  • Never underestimate your importance, and always play to win!

Mein Kampf: A Tale of Vainglourious Basterds
“Life does not forgive weakness.”Adolf Hitler (17/02/1945)

You are a spy. The year is 1942.

The war rages on faster and harder than ever. The people are weary from constant fighting and broken from the frequent air raids. The Allied front has suffered from millions of casualties. Soon, it seems, the Axis will break through and win for good.

You, one of the elite agents in your nation's secret service, are one of the key players in the Allied resistance against the ruthless Nazis. Tonight, you have been deployed on a covert mission of the utmost importance. Tonight, you may be the one to decide the outcome of this war.

It is to be done with little fanfare, no overt recognition; the lights shall remain off and the windows shuttered, and you shall leave quietly ere dawn. Before your departure, your fellow colleagues gather around you to celebrate this momentous occasion. They wish you heartfelt goodbyes, and though the atmosphere is one of staid appreciation – even happiness – a shadow hangs over you all as you dread- nay, you know that this departure shall not be reconciled with a merry return. The congratulations are many, and the condolences are equally so.

The briefing is quick and tense, but thorough. Though pressed for time, nobody dares risk a confusion that could cost millions of lives. You grab your pack, and take down your rifle from the rack. You put on your cap and gloves, grab a map, and prepare to step out into the cold night...

Introduction

Welcome to Mein Kampf: A Tale of Vainglourious Basterds, where the scum take the spotlight! This Mafia game aims to be novel, challenging, interesting, intellectually stimulating and, of course, delightfully, mischievously, uproariously fun. Though its mechanics are designed to be well-defined and coherent, this is not a vanilla game – in fact, I'd deem this setup to be quite experimental, so bear with me when you play. For any new players, I recommend you to have played at least a few games and read a few more. I highly suggest you stay active throughout the game! This is designed to be demanding and fast-paced.

I believe my pre-prepared flavour for this game is my best yet - it is, certainly, my longest yet. This has been on the backburner for the past year, morphing in and out of various forms. However, it is a bit verbose compared to most games. I apologise in advance to anyone who feels that my writing style is over-the-top, amateurish or dull to read; I agree with you fully on all counts, but you will, sadly, be given a lot of it.

As a player, you must keep your wits about you, your friends close by and your enemies even closer. Trust only your dearest friends, or nobody at all if possible, for you never know who may be a traitor in the camp, who the next target will be, and who will be the one to thrust their blade through the soft folds of skin and cloth on your exposed back...

  • I, the moderator, will not lie to you.

  • Never underestimate your importance, try to be respectfulto the other players and to the moderator, and always play to win!

Game specific rules – read these two if you won't read them all!
  • On a no-lynch, no-vote or tie, the Nazis will choose a person to kill randomly.

DF Modding / [UTIL] The DF Food Generator
« on: July 15, 2012, 03:20:25 am »
This is a neat little utility that'll likely be of some use to you - it automatically generates food raws from a prewritten list of foods and component values. What this means is that you can quickly type in some names for cool foods, and the program will convert that for you into a format DF can read.

You don't need to learn raw code, and you don't need to go through all the time-consuming copy-pasting or sift through all the clutter that you don't need to edit. You can have a variety of cooked food types (pies, gratins, casseroles, cakes, you name it) without having to resort to looking for a mod that does this, too. As a bonus, the generated raw file is 100% compatible with any other mods that you may have. It's a small mod, but I find I like the small-but-subtle extra richness that it adds to the world.

Included in the package with the utility is also an example list of foods for the program - the syntax for the file is a simple name-number (of components) pair separated by a colon. For the lazy, you can simply run this and you will get 48 new foods for your dwarves to make, no effort required on your part. To add more foods or foods of your own, simply add on to or replace the contents of the included "dffoods.txt".

Here's the link to it.

Hello there!

If you've read or heard about the Liar Game manga/anime series, you'll likely already know what it is I'm suggesting.

In case you don't, this is to test the waters for a new forum game that I may run soon. Unlike many of the games here, this is not a suggestion adventure, nor is it cooperative.

No, it's in fact highly competitive - if you like winning and seeing others lose, this is likely your thing. It's a game in which very little is certain about other players and the GM presence is minimal, and encourages the formation of self-governed allliances and agreements as well as treachery and social engineering. You'll be trying to both befriend and deceive, attempting to gain power while at the same time trying to hide it from others.

The premise is simple, and you can consider it a contest of sorts - in short, you will be given a certain sum of money at the beginning of the game, and it is your task to wheedle as much as you can off of the other players. Make trade or service agreements, pose as a conned player needing a loan to stave off elimination, anything goes. Those who fail to make their quota, and thus end up in too high a debt, will suffer... Consequences. The winner, then, will be the one with the most money and thus the best conman. Each game, so to speak, may take about two to three weeks depending.

Additionally, drawing another parallel to the series, it is likely that a parallel but linked game/competiton of investors and patrons or observers/experimenters of some sort will be created not only to serve as the manipulators (akin to the Office in-series) but also to provide room for those less socially inclined but equally devious.

So! What do you think? Would you be interested in playing this? Might you even be excited about it? If you are, please reply here with your say-so - I'd want to know if it'd even be worthwhile to do this, and I assume this would be the best course of action.

Alternatively, if you have the very notion of such a game and think it's awful and terribly boring, feel free to reply with that too so I'll know to keep silent from now on.

Hey there!

As it turns out, I need your help with a research project that I'm currently working on. I've written a short informational text/essay on coffee and caffeine, and now I need to distribute it to people to read and react to.

Now, the hitch is that this involves quite a few people, and the amount of people that I can contact in the meatworld has been limited. You guys being an audience I'm already rather familiar with, I've decided to distribute it to you and (hopefully) garner responses; I've made a set of six short questions that can be found below to respond to, and that should be about all I need. Since the essay's less than four pages and less than 3000 words, being the geniuses that you are, you should whiz through it in no time at all.

But I wouldn't expect something for nothing, not even from you guys. It's pretty chill here, but I'm not about to demand favours out of kindness alone.

So, I'll sweeten the offer a little: If you read the essay and respond to the short questions, I'll do anything you want me to do in return.

No, really, I mean that. I have no political clout and not much money, so I'm offering you manpower. In return for reading a shitty little essay and doing a 5-minute survey, I'll write you a 3,000 word short story, paint a painting, make a drawing, bake a cake, do some insanely stupid dare, run in front of passing traffic, Livestream a game/tv/movie/real marathon, write a love letter, drop out of school and move to a monastery, prove the Collatz conjecture, trek through Siberia, swim the Atlantic or live off of tree-bark and lichen in some isolated forest for a month - if it's within my means, I'll do it, and I'll give it my all.

My hope here is that this will be mutually beneficial - for me, I get data for my project and get to broaden my horizons with something I probably wouldn't have done otherwise, and you get to amuse yourself with my unending misery and failures.

Interested? Here's what to do:
  • Take five to read through the four easy pages in the text here (if you want it in any other format, just ask).
  • Answer these questions:
       1. How old are you?
       2. What gender are you?
       3. Do you drink any caffeinated beverages (such as coffee, tea, soft drinks or energy drinks)?
       4. If yes to the above question, how often do you drink them a week?
       5. Did you find the essay informative?
       6. Did you find the essay interesting to read?
  • Post your answers along with the request for what you want me to do and any other comments you might have.
  • Sit back, bask in the fuzzy glow of goodness, and laugh at my struggles.

In the end, I'll collate the requests together and pick the most popular one to do, then upload/report the results here.

And even if you aren't interested, I'd really appreciate it if you'd take just ten minutes out of your life to help a bro out. You'll feel good about it, I'll feel a little less bad about myself and I'll even write a thank you note (if you want that).

Thanks again for everything, B12!

This is just a quick topic to inform you all of the current free Aeroshots promotion, which is sadly only for those in the US. If you make a habit of staying up late or sleeping little, and are disgusted by your usual choice of coffee or energy drinks, you might be interested in the inhaler.

And hey, it's free stuff - free is good, no?

Since I'm ineligible for this US-only promotion and I've already signed up and received my ten-person coupon, I thought I'd share it here for you guys to use and puff on. Feel free to use it, or sign up for your own to use or share.

Mafia / Witches' Coven: Over Hill, Over Dale - Dark Apprentice Needed!

Witches' Coven: Over Hill, Over Dale
"The evils which are perpetrated by modern witches exceed all other sin which God has ever permitted to be done...
For they are called witches (maleficae) on account of the enormity of their crimes..."
- Malleus Maleficarum, Part I Question XIV

Welcome to the second Witches' Coven, a novel Mafia gametype just for you!

This, unlike other gametypes, relies on a mostly closed setup. What this means for you is that you will not begin the game with access to information about all the roles - you will either have to deduce that by yourself, read the flavour for detective work or just roll along without it. There may or may not be some hidden mechanics for the game also. That said, I will try to keep this toward the simpler, lower-powered end of the spectrum - just enough to be interesting for both you and me.

Though it has been called a Bastard Mod before, note that I will not intentionally confuse or imbalance the game; everything will be for your own enjoyment, and I will only withhold information to further that goal. Additionally, I will never outright lie, so you can trust that what I say is reliable.

Game Rules:
   1. The Good Faith Rule: It will be trusted, on behalf of both the players and the mod, that you will play according to the restrictions (if any) given and that you will play both respectfully and to fulfill your win condition to the best of your abilities.
   2. All votes must be in red. Unvoting before voting again is not required, but appreciated. You may vote for No Lynch. You cannot conditional vote. In case of a tie, no one will be lynched. The game is hammerless.
   3. Days and Nights both span 48 hours.  Neither time span includes weekends. Nights may end earlier if all actions are in before the deadline. Days and nights end at 9PM GMT unless otherwise specified.
   4. Never edit your posts for any reason, including typos.
   5. Do not PM other players unless explicitly allowed.  Players with private chat access will be given a topic on QuickTopic where they may post freely.
   6. Never quote any PM from the mod or any communication with them unless explicitly allowed.  You may give a general summary (for example, a roleclaim), but do not quote directly. Rulebreakers can and will be modkilled with prejudice.
   7. Any requests to the moderator not in bold will be ignored.
   8. You may ask for an extension or shorten by putting the respective word in bold.  Extensions require 33% of players to agree minus any players opposing, and requires at least three players. Extends are for 24 hours, and there may only be a maximum of three Extends.  Shortens require at least 51% of players to agree, and will end the day as soon as I can process the day end.
   9. Dead players may post one “bah post” to comment on their death, but it may not contain any relevant game information.  After that, please do not post.
  10. Please make an effort to post at least once daily.  If you do not post for 36 hours, you will be prodded.  If I don’t hear from you within 24 more hours, you will be replaced and/or modkilled.
  11. Never underestimate your importance, and always play to win!

Spoiler: Unnecessary fluff (click to show/hide)

In the aftermath of Swartz' arrest due to the unlawful downloading of scientific articles, a man named Gregory Maxwell has published almost twenty thousand scientific papers and journals on the now-infamous file-sharing site, The Pirate Bay (Link to download and Maxwell's own statements in the Ars article).

I originally intended to submit this to the Happy thread, but decided against it after seeing the post grow in size. instead, it has now become a discussion thread for both this predicament and possibly for IP and freedom-of-information in general. Feel free to read through and comment.

Background:
Scientists need their work published and read too. Various journals, galleries and museums facilitate this need, and hold often massive repositories full of all sorts of scientific literature (though publishers specialise in one field more often than not).

What is interesting about this system, however, is the fact that the authors will also have to pay a quite non-trivial fee to get it published. These companies empty the already rather thin wallets of both academic readers and authors; a successful article will leave the scientist just as poor as before.

And with the highly unfortunate “publish or perish” mentality about the whole field, the scholars themselves have an impossibly weak bargaining position: They’re expected to pump out (and publish at their own cost) papers at a steady pace; high positions of professorship and so forth often come with a requirement to have published several well-known academic papers; these papers are often essential for their continued good reputation – and for their findings to reach a sufficiently large audience. With the quite niche area (in large part due to the fact that access is so prohibitively expensive) resulting in few good options, and the academicians’ need to be published by prestigious journals, these businesses can simply tell them to “bend over like a big boy take it in the a**”. Open publishing efforts have and are being advanced, yes, but these remain small and relatively ineffectual. The “big names” persist.

With average costs placed around 20-30 USD for one person’s one-month access to one paper (my mother’s own essay, as an example, costs 35 USD for one person to access just once), scientific literature is typically ranked as one of the most expensive types available today. In the past, this was to offset costs of mechanical publishing for relatively niche markets, but with the ubiquity of digital publishing today – and the wholly digital form of the papers leaked – this higher cost has become largely unnecessary.

What’s more, these prohibitive costs keep the buying market – and the availability of said information – very small, covering not much more than the academics who need it for their livelihood. This leaves the general public bereft of high-quality literature such as this, even when by all rights it should be available to them: Thousands of old essays with expired copyrights are still peddled by these vendors, and are often the only reliable source for it. Restrictive copyright laws in some countries limit the access further.

Skipping ahead to the hereNnow:
All the articles published date back before 1927, which places them firmly in the area of Public Domain. And since the material in question was obtained through wholly legitimate means (contacts in academia are a very useful thing to have) this man's efforts should most likely be legitimate, and the papers should be free.

The journal-publishing businesses have continued to charge for said PD-papers, however, and with the staggering prices (Maxwell's payload totals at about 353248 USD for one person's computer's single-month access, and the amount of downloads going on right now would already put the "losses" at an insane 179096736 USD assuming the downloaders will only use the articles themselves if at all) at which the articles were placed, this leak comes as quite a relief. It's a signal that these businesses are going to have a tougher time controlling their information - bad for them, but good for the public in general as they gain access something that is, in my opinion, rightfully theirs.

I personally think that this will lead to good things; further dissemination of such information by audiences that were hitherto unable to do so (because of financial or political reasons) and progress toward my personal ideals of a liberal, digital utopia.

Witches' Coven: Through the Fog and Filthy Air
"The evils which are perpetrated by modern witches exceed all other sin which God has ever permitted to be done...
For they are called witches (maleficae) on account of the enormity of their crimes..."
- Malleus Maleficarum, Part I Question XIV

A blue moon rises over our fateful town.
A lone figure, cloaked by the night, drags itself into the village barn seen by none but the sickly hound, to die the dog's death. Strangers sit in the field by their fire waiting for dawn, always coming - and passing - in threes. The wilds are their home, however, and each night the fires will be lit anew. Each night, they will flee into the woods.
It cannot go any other way.
In the warm expanse of the drunkard's refuge, the men feel uneasy. Their farms have seen a meagre harvest, and the night's ghostly blue colour warns of more things to come. Thus they drink deep and long into the night, wasting their precious grain and becoming ever more reckless when wisdom would be needed most.

Welcome to Beginner's Mafia XXIII!
For the LORD hath driven out from before you great nations and strong: but as for you, no man hath been able to stand before you unto this day. (Joshua 23:9)

Introduction

This version of the game is aimed specifically at players who are new to Mafia, or are still relatively inexperienced. Here, it's more about having fun and learning than anything else, so don't give up hope if you find yourself in a bad position!
This Beginners' Mafia will feature playing ICs. This means that two more experienced people will join in the game to help you guys out and will actually be playing in the game. They can also be scum too, so always stay suspicious!
The ICs will never lie to you about the game mechanics though, and will usually have a special IC voice to use when they want to teach you guys, since their goal will be to get you guys ready for a real Mafia game. Just because they're playing doesn't mean you can't learn!

Gameplay and Concept

In Mafia, you are divided into two parts: 7 Town players and 2 Mafia players:

If you are Town, your goal is to lynch the Mafia. You do this by convincing others that one of the group is scum, and getting enough votes on them to lynch them.  The Town does not know who else is Town.

If you are Mafia, your goal is to kill off the Town until there is an equal number of them to you by getting them to lynch other Town or by killing them. You are given a kill each Night to kill any player in the game.  All the Mafia members know each other, and can communicate privately.

Each Day, everyone votes to lynch a player.  Vote for a player by posting their name in red.  You may change your vote at any time, remove your vote, or vote for No Lynch. Whoever has the most votes at the end of the day gets lynched, even if there is no majority. (Example: Nobody votes except for one guy, who votes Generic_Steve. Generic_Steve would get lynched). If you have a great deal of suspicion for someone, but don't want to vote for them just yet, point their name out in blue.

The Day will not end prematurely unless people vote to shorten the day. That is, there is no "hammer" in Beginner's Mafia, where X amount of votes (more than 50%) on a single person immediately ends the day with a lynch on that person. Some games do that, but not this one, and you would be explicitly informed in the rules if the hammer is active.

If there are tied votes for who gets lynched at the end of the day, the day ends in a no-lynch. (Two people vote for Generic_Steve, two people vote for Unassuming_Mary. Nobody gets lynched.)

Each Night, you send in your actions. The cycle continues until one side wins. Days are 72 hours and nights are 24 hours. Weekends count for zero hours.

Rules and Guidelines
  • You may not PM other players other than the mod. The mafia will have a place to talk to themselves.
  • Never edit your posts, even to fix typos!  If you make a mistake, just double post- it's permitted here. Violation of this rule can lead to deadly repercussions.  I recommend using the preview button every time you post.
  • Never quote your role PM or any other PM sent to you by the mod.
  • If you need more time to discuss, you may ask for an extension.  If more players ask for one than those who decline one, the day will be extended by 48 hours.
    • There are no limit to the number of extensions allowed per day.
  • Please don't forget about this game if you sign up! If you cannot continue playing, please ask for a replacement! I will prod you via PM if you do not post in 48 hours to remind you that this game exists!
    • Note that a Mafia game usually takes a long time to finish: two weeks at least, and sometimes even longer than a month. Be ready for this.
    • Upon receiving your second prod, you are forcibly replaced (Another player takes your place) or modkilled (removed from the game) for inactivity. Beware.
  • Upon being killed, you are entitled to one "Bah!" post, but you are not allowed to post any game-related content. After your Bah post, you MUST NOT POST AGAIN unless you somehow come back to life (impossible in this setup) or replace back in (you must have been town to do this). Failure to comply with this rule can lead to a bad reputation amongst mods, and difficulty in joining other games.
  • Never underestimate your importance, and always play to win!
In this setup, there are the possibility of extra roles. These roles are Cop and Doctor for Town, and Roleblocker and Godfather for Mafia.
  • A Cop inspects any player at Night. They are told that player's alignment, but not their role.
  • A Doctor may protect any player at Night. This stops that player from being killed.
  • A Roleblocker stops an extra role from using an action. This stops Doctors and Cops but does nothing for Townies.
    • Roleblockers do not actually discover if their attempts were successful or not; that would be too powerful because the roleblocker would know they found a town power role. It isn't an investigative role (the same goes for the Doctor)! The Mafia needs to find the town power roles the old-fashioned way: analyzing behavior and voting patterns.
    • Townies do not receive a message if they were blocked by a Mafia Roleblocker. Only a Cop or a Doctor will receive a message.
  • A Godfather, if investigated by a Cop, looks just like a normal Townie.
There is a 50% chance for any of these roles to show up. It is possible to end up with no extra roles.

Extensions require support from at least one of the players.  You may oppose extensions as well, which cancels out an extension request.  For example, if there were five players, with two requesting and two opposing, there would be no extension.  (2-2 = 0 of 5)

Along with opposing extensions, there is also the option to Shorten/End the Day. They work differently from extensions, 33% required to pass with no objections. Shortening the Day ends the Day makes the day end as quickly as I can process it. Due to the nature of these requests, they also act just like Counter-Extensions.

Please bold requests/opposition to extensions, and Mod/my name if you want to ask me a question in-thread.  (IE: Mod: I have a question!)

Life Advice / Good video capturing program?
« on: March 11, 2011, 01:13:45 pm »
Anyone know of a good, easy-to-use program for recording video on the computer?

I'd rather not use Fraps, as I've had some problems with that.

15
So. After seeing this little thing by the MSPA art team I thought, "Why not do something like this over here at B12"?

This is a collaborative art project, where anyone can participate regardless of skill or style. How to participate, you ask?

It's simple! All you need to do is download the current chain, draw your own fist-bumping little guy/gal/robot/thing/eldritch monster on it, and reupload it here. I'll update the OP witht eh chain as we go along. Hopefully by the end of it we'll have one extraordinarily long fistbump chain. After that, we can try some other rockin ideas! How about that!

To prevent any evil ninjas from stealing your soul contribution spot, you can opt to Reserve with red text like that, and secure your spot for 3 days. After that, sorry, but we'll have to let the ninjas steal your soooouuuul take the spot so the chain won't die.

A few guidelines:
  • Try not to have huge images. I'm making the chain 500px tall and I'd appreciate it if your contribs were too, but I can resize if needed.
  • Nothing vulgar or illegal please.
  • Reserve with red text.
  • When reserving, make sure you don't spend too long on it.

What about it, people? Ready to rock and roll?

"YEAH!"

All right!

Here's what we have so far:
