DF Gameplay Questions / Overlapping text in trade screen
« on: July 06, 2023, 04:59:42 pm »
So, I've come back to DF after a looooong hiatus, to discover lots of lovely new things have been done and all that, which is great.  But I am having some visual issues... I'm not considering it a bug, since I'm sure it's just me not setting things correctly, but I got my first caravan and the weight/value is sitting on top of the item description, instead of at the other end of the bar, where there's room.  I had a check in the forumsearch and on google, but apparently my google fu is weak.  Also, anyone know how to get the minimap to sod off? It used to be tab, but not any more.

I figured I'd post these up to get feedback and maybe hook a tasty little artist.

1: Vatican Black Ops
So, for ages I've had (technically it was a collaborative idea generated by discussion with my mum (who is also a giant geek NESTED PARENTHESES!) but I've developed on it a fair bit) an idea for a comic about a Black Ops team that operate out of the Vatican, doing various morally-grey (the church, surely not!) activities, including but not limited to - putting down cults, dealing with demons, spying, discovering evidence, burning evidence, political assassinations etc.

The Vatican runs it because they're rich, but technically they are drawn from the various Christian denominations (the protestants swear they get given the shittier barracks).  The idea was originally for a roleplaying game, and with a little fusion of RPG parties and the A-team, coupled with my lifelong fondness for power armour I decided to give them all exoskeletons of varying strength and bulkiness suitable for their job.

I've always been fascinated with saints and sainthood, so it didn't take long before anything more important than a lighter was powered by saintly relics.  The relics all subtly (or not so subtly) bless the thing they're powering, so a radio powered by the finger bone of Saint Philip (a cheerful man throughout his life) might uplift the spirit through the saint-blessed words of the speaker while that same radio powered by a shard of the blade that slew Saint Adelbert lends an irresistible tone of command (let's ignore the fact that Adelbert got murdered for being too bossy).

It was my intention that the story progress, slowly revealing details of a conspiracy (le gasp!) of infernal nature, and introducing the various other organised or semi-organised religious Spec Ops teams like Dervishes and Bikkhu Brigades, introducing both antagonistic and awfully helpful demons and otherworldy spirits, examining the nature of belief and the way in which one can follow the tenets of their faith while still attending to their duties, or the ways in which you can stray with or without losing sight of the true path back to salvation.

2:Vessels
I was kinda annoyed when Altered Carbon came out, because it shares similar themes, and no one had heard of the book.
Another idea i've had for ages, and have slowly built upon - Vessels is a cyberpunk story, though less grimdark than is typical for the genre, that follows 3 sets of people in telling various stories about the world and the impact of the separation of mind and body.  In Vessels, we've largely entered a post-scarcity era - what we would think of as middle class are now so vastly engineered and wealthy that they can more or less do and be whatever they want. Decadence and ennuie naturally follow, and for many youths their primary entertainment is crime or purchasing Vessels (bodies) from the army to go on FPS-style shootouts, which is how the west now largely handles their requirements for disposable soldiers like the penal legions of old.
The core technology at play is the ability to upload yourself into a company-owned server and stream your consciousness into another vacant body. People hire personal trainers to exercise their vessels while they gallavant about the internet or stream to new bodies for various purposes.  Insurance is handled in the form of data-preservation-clauses which obligate the company responsible for you hiring out your body to keep your consciousness-data around until such time as you would've died naturally, and many are keen to get themselves killed on a job in order to be allowed to live what they feel is a better life online (though this is insurance fraud much as any other insurance scam would be). Crucially, the infrastructure required means that while you can upload your brain permanently (though digital duplication is a crime, as is remaining conscious while uploaded as a form of duplication), technology only allows one to stream into another body - we can copy neural patterns, but not physically overwrite other brains. Religious and political organisations obviously have mitts in this whole thing.
I suppose this brings us to the core - One of the three pairs focused on is made up of two law enforcement officers who investigate and resolve Vessel-related crimes (bodyjacking, failure to make good on data-preservation-clauses, preservation-fraud, duplication, criminal misuse of Vessel etc). through their work they become acquainted with two other pairs, one a middle class genetically-engineered mother and her son, the others a Vessel-class (considered a lower class, they have to work a reasonable amount in order to live a comfortable life, where working means 'hiring out your body as a Vessel while you float around cyberspace for a day') couple, one an enthusiastic adopter who would very much like to shed his mortal coil, and his partner who would rather live a real life with popcorn and sunsets etc.

Oh, and everyone in cyberspace is rendered by the animal that best represents them, as decided by their own subconscious self-image.

-----
I've got some neat ideas on using coloured text/text bubbles to indicate the nature of speakers, perhaps giving
readers clues as to their motivations, and yes, definitely playing with it for drama.

So, there we go. As is true for probably anyone, I've got four billion less well-developed ideas, including an adventure story about a technologically-advanced girl exploring a post-apocalyptic icescape and whatnot.

DF General Discussion / Fullscreen on monitor #2
« on: July 07, 2018, 09:29:50 am »
Ok, This has to be on here somewhere, but neither wiki nor google nor forum search revealed the answer to me - How do I get DF running on my second monitor. Every time I go to fullscreen, it switches back to my first monitor, which I'm using to do other things. Any clue, any pointers on where my googlefu has failed me?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Finding places?
« on: February 18, 2012, 03:52:32 pm »
 Hello, there.

How do the resplendent denizens of these forums manage to find villages and whatnot? I took a quest from my home village to take on a bandit, did so, and returned home using the map and direction indicators, only to find that... the village is nowhere to be found. In fact.. this is true of every village I visit. When I've pinpointed the location and the on-screen indicator is saying *** - TSK, I find myself in the middle of nowhere, with no villages anywhere in sight. No matter where I explore in any direction, there's no village...

DF General Discussion / Sad enough to come onto the forums on Christmas
« on: December 25, 2010, 07:03:36 am »
I'll know roughly how many of you were sad enough to visit the forums by the view count. You have already contributed to this thread, just be reading this.

I don't like Christmas, but I understand it's very popular.

For once it looks like i'll actually get the thing I ask for every year: to be left alone*.

Score!

DF Gameplay Questions / SOLDIER_COLOR
« on: December 19, 2010, 01:06:40 pm »
I thought I'd pooter around in the nobility raws, for although I dislike them, I want to see them, just once, before I send them back into the pit whence they came. however, I keep getting errors related to the SOLDIER_COLOR tag. Did it cease to be a tag at some point?

I rarely touch on the nobility, so it's an area of modding I'm unfamiliar with. If the tag still works, why isn't it? I would simply remove it, but I prefer my nobility in shades of something other than purple, if I am to have them at all.

DF Gameplay Questions / Dancing Merchants
« on: December 05, 2010, 07:16:00 am »
My search-fu is weak, please direct me to another topic if this has already been answered.

I just had a dwarven caravan come shortly after an elf one, but while the lves filed in and did business, one dwarven merchant is dancing about outside my fortress entrance. He's acting like a CURIOUSBEAST that has spotted a dwarf, coming close and then prancing away. All the other merchants are fine, how do I get this last prick to stop dancing and trade?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / It's not the size that matters...
« on: November 29, 2010, 04:30:12 pm »
...it's the artefacts you put in it.

Yes, noble forum goers, I ask of you a simple task. Find out for me, the smallest a room can be while being of royal quality. Smoothing and engraving by the finest stoneworkers will, of course, be a necessity. High value buildable artefacts, cages with expensive beasts, a room entirely made from gems, all that stuff. But you must actually build it.

Bonus points if everything in the room is vulnerable to magma and can be cleansed with the press of a (possibly artefact quality) lever.

DF Gameplay Questions / My new favourite bug.
« on: November 21, 2010, 04:53:57 pm »
This one made me chuckle a little to myself.

I've got a doctor, who, for some reason, is down in the caverns. He kept spamming a cancellation message because he was getting webbed, so I decided to go down and have a look (this is not the first time). It turns out that he's been repeatedly throwing himself into webs. Occasionally he takes a break and then he's right back on it. I've had a medical dwarf do this before, I think they're confusing threads with medical training (modded) and repeatedly wasting all the threads in the deep.

Good for a giggle, I suppose.

DF Gameplay Questions / Double the deities
« on: November 18, 2010, 10:26:15 am »
I just found a dwarf worshipping two gods. Is this a bug a feature? I've never seen a dwarf worship two gods, so what's going on here?

DF Gameplay Questions / Soap making.
« on: October 27, 2010, 06:21:35 am »
My weak search-fu has turned up nothing useful. I have soap making queued up, but none of my soap makers are doing it. They're not spamming messages about lack of lye or barrels, the area isn't cut off, they just plain refuse to do the job.

Any thoughts?

DF Gameplay Questions / Armour Upgrade Preferences
« on: October 26, 2010, 04:37:27 pm »
I've noticed that my dwarves have been consistently upgrading to new and better types of armour. Is this an acknowledged feature? I hadn't heard any mention of it, but only recently a group of goblins in iron turned up instead of the usual copper shite they wear, and my military has all iron gear on, even though their preferences are set to metal. What's up with this?

DF Gameplay Questions / Whaaaaaa!?!?! (Atom smashing and you)
« on: October 25, 2010, 12:36:19 pm »
I "accidentally" let an elven caravan get wasted by goblins. So, as any dwarf does, I made the best of the situation by taking the good and dumping the bad underneath my 1x1 land bridge for atomsmashing. I get a dwarf to pull the lever and instead of ending up bridge 17, Elven goods 0, I have crappy elven wares spread across the landscape, with some of it still underneath the bridge. What did I do wrong?

DF Gameplay Questions / Keybinding screw up
« on: October 14, 2010, 09:03:00 am »
Every time I press delete, it comes up with the little pointy symbol instead. I can't find the right keybinding in the options and it's beginning to get on my nerves. How do I make DF 31.16 acknowledge my delete as a delete, rather than giving me the odd little symbol. I should know this, and yet I don't.

DF Suggestions / Light as heat, kinda two birds with one stone.
« on: August 16, 2010, 03:51:21 pm »
I was over in another thread when a thought struck me. how about light and heat affect each other, specifically in the form of excess light producing heat. If the levels of light (in arbitrary units) reach a certain (raw editable) level, the excess light would become heat. This would be offset by whatever else affects it, but it would mean that places with a lot of sun are naturally hotter, which seems pretty reasonable to me.

It also opens the door for dwarfy light contraptions based on the light levels (perhaps different months are brighter than others?), Rube-Goldberg devices of greater complexity and glass lenses for focusing and directing light! Think of the possibilities!

The light could be checked without too much FPS drop by having the game check the map every so often, compare the light results with the light maximum (see above) and turn anything over that into heat, perhaps 1 for 1 or whatever.

Thoughts? Ideas? Problems?
