DF Gameplay Questions / Magma Piston construction and safety
« on: November 05, 2011, 02:19:35 pm »
I have seen this idea and made a first attempt but there are a few things I do not understand and I have some questions on the operation and construction of this device.

If the floor hatches are solid enough like being attached to a lever to make them either open or closed all the time will they act as a support?

Second issue is safety. During the first attempt, alot of miners died. How is this safely dug out without having to sit there and watch your dwarf dig out every single square? My current piston touches damp walls so I cannot increase it's size on a number of levels, could I carve out "safety" ledges in the piston itself and it will still work?

DF Gameplay Questions / Worldgen and Kobolds
« on: November 01, 2011, 04:56:25 pm »
This probley isn't a bug since no one else seems to have this problem but I cannot seem to get kobolds to generate at all. Either they are extinct or just plain don't exsist anymore.

Is there specific settings in world generation like not letting the history go on long enough/too much savagery that do this or do I have to edit creature settings to get them to generate?

DF Gameplay Questions / Dwarf immediately canceling strange mood
« on: October 30, 2011, 10:40:13 pm »
I just had a dwarf go insane out of nowhere I had no idea what happened until I checked the log, apparently he had a strange mood, which was immediately canceled by him going insane.

The only thing I can think of to cause this was that he was a hauler for metals and he had alot of labors disabled. Will this happen to anyone else that gets a strange mood?

DF Gameplay Questions / Way to reset dwarves?
« on: October 28, 2011, 08:36:42 pm »
I recently downloaded the newest version and after spending an hour making a world, picking out a spot and then setting up my embark team something happened to my dwarves.

I set my dwarves to digging soil until they were skill/proficient and then began some exploritory mining but when they reached the end of the designated mining areas all but one of them just stopped doing anything.

Setting up meeting areas didn't work, designating new tasks or labours didn't work there was nothing I could to prevent them from just sitting in the hole they dug and starving to death. It wasn't a ramp or stairs problem since two of them got out of the bottom pit fine although one of them stopped halfway and only one got back to the surface to work on other things.

I have had this happen in previous versions but it didn't happen to all of my dwarves at once and they would usually start moving again once they started dying of thirst or hunger.

Is there some catch all command to make them move?

DF Bug Reports / [0.28.181.40d] Stops Responding
« on: July 10, 2009, 10:15:04 pm »
After three months I have started playing Dwarf Fortress again and I have started getting errors.

Dwarf Fortress will seemingly at random stop responding and close making me lose any progress I made on my fortress. I don't recieve any other error message other then "This application has stopped responding etc", I have been able to reload and play again until I get past the point I got the error, but the game will still stop responding whenever it chooses to.

I have been able to run DF for hours at a time in the past without incident and as far as I know I have not changed any of my computers settings in any way that could be relevant to this.
