Curses / I gave up after several days of research - HOW TO COMPILE ?
« on: August 03, 2017, 04:08:29 am »
I've been looking through threads on how to compile the latest version of LCS - followed several instructions, but failed miserably.

Would somebody be so kind as to just give me a brief step by step method on how to manage to compile the latest source code of LCS ?
I am really shocked on how easy it is to program and mod, but how abysmal  the difficulty to properly compile the damn thing is.
I must say thou, while I understand basic coding and what libraries are, I really have no idea how to properly set up the compiler, so a step by step would be greatly appreciated!

DF Community Games & Stories / A friend made a drawing, fits ?

I thought it's worth a laugh or two for bay 12.
What do you guys think of it ?
For me, it looks like a dwarf that is about to have a bit of "fun" :)

Other Games / SPACE BEAST TERROR FRIGHT!!
« on: April 10, 2015, 06:11:39 am »
Man.... oh man.... when the game description starts off the bat like this:

S.B.T.F. is a very hard arcade-style / rogue-like / perma-death first person shooter on procedurally generated maze-like spacecraft....
I simply bought it on the spot.

I'm no good at reviews or such, just go take a look and post here your opinions (I know other people can write a hell more of a descriptive review than me). I just shared this with you guys since it is a bit obscure at the moment, but I know a lot of you guys can get a kick out of it.

I played it till my eyes popped.

Alien assault is a very obscure tactical turn based squad marine alien survival thingy to begin with.
And when i say obscure i mean really, since i didn't find it here on bay12!

What makes this game special is it's perma death, squad that suffers all sorts of scars and damage, promotion and decorative distinctions on them.

As you can see I'm not too good of a game describer and I feel like I'm doing more harm than good to the game's reputation so just head on here and get the game.

(BE SURE not to click on the Alien Assault 2, or Alien assault - left 2 die; those have to do with the first AA)

Really want to hear your guys opinion on this one!

Curses / Programming it!
« on: June 04, 2013, 12:36:09 am »
So this topic is related to LCS.
Jumped into c++ a few days ago, and frankly it's a long way, I am sure of it.
Reading tutorials and such, but in case i would want to practice around with the code source of LCS, i would need:
C++ notions (and more...)
What else?

Also if you have some good C++ tutorials, paste them links. Have a couple of my own, but having more sources to read from is always a good way to learn.

Would be glad to try and learn some in my spare time, i've got a lot of it.
And of course help with all the gutting, low priority tasks.

Curses / Random generated portraits - Added tutorial
« on: January 23, 2013, 05:01:34 pm »
LINK to tutorial - http://www.ja-galaxy-forum.com/board/ubbthreads.php/topics/314786/Random_generated_Portraits_TUT.html#Post314786
It was written by me on another site, next to the same article as this one.

Ok, maybe there's a little more to go, than half way.
But what i want to promote today is this generator, take a look and read lower:

These are the animations - there is some quality loss due to the video conversion (sorry, my fault) as you can see in contrast with the actual pictures. Also, didn't handle the frame sequence and looping too well, so some animations may seem screwy.

These upper portraits were created by me (through the generator) as trying to show some of the features: male, female, ape generator plus hats and torture marks. Two portrait was personally created while others were selected from a list of randomly generated portraits.

Here i want to show the color ability of the program, you can manipulate every color component, even more you have a random color button which changes colors randomly from a given set of list. In my perspective, just by playing with the random color button on a character changes the way it is expressed, and can also reflect age to a certain degree.

These sets of portraits were generated through preferences settings ( you can tell the generator what "pieces of facial characteristics, and clothes to use) making this tool pretty easy to handle.

Here i tried to create a biker stereotype (i included lots of facial hair, excluded some "soft" facial characteristics, and added hats) so that every time you create a random character, a biker stereotype is created. I didn't work too much on it, but enough to understand for a demonstration of what you can do:

You name them

And these are some prisoners/slaves portraits

These other portraits (the two links under) were generated randomly and posted as they are here.

Here is a link to the portrait generator itself, for those interested in using it or seeing what it does. You'll find it quite flexible in editing, just explore the functions - further instructions on how to use i will gladly share, only ask.

http://www.mediafire.com/?thhvg6rjhhz4wk6

(There are some features that need explaining, but the most important heads up is, if you load female pack you can't save in a gallery of male portraits. If you load a gallery of male, and you have female selected, you will get an error. I guess i wasn't too clear on it, but you'll understand.)

TO note - Quality is a bit dimmer since i am not so good at manipulating screen shots and such.
        - Also, looking back, i can see not all the hair types manage to get in for the girls, total hair types being 20 in number.

A list of features from the generator:

a) A lot of variations on portraits
b) THEY. ARE. HAND-DRAWN. - this is the most important feature of all, since 3d rand-gen portraits are abundant, this one is unique
c) ANIMATED - lips, eyebrows, eyes.
d) Male, female and ape generator.
e) Features like tortured face marks, glasses, hats.

Another option the generator has is an ethnic criteria, being able to choose between arab, american or russian facial characteristics, thou don't expect for changes too radical. (Biggest contrast is between americans and russians, there are differences in beards, eyes and so forth; also arabs looks pretty much like US soldiers because they are mixed mercenaries, some white some with darker skin color)

So what i'm thinking is - how hard would it be, and I bet it is - to actually implement this in game? for people you recruit meet or fight?
Seeing also that a lot of color and background is adjustable we can tune the portraits down to look grimmer so it could try and fit the the ASCII graphics.
As an ending, i just threw this over here, only if anyone is interested in coding it, also to take a look at the program itself since it's loads of fun to work with.
I am not expecting anything but your opinions at this point.
Cheers!

NOTE: The generator itself i talked about as for the artwork are NOT part of my work. The generator is created by STUCUK (forum administrator and patcher of Original War) as for the art itself being part of a game, Original War.

DF Modding / Tileset question
« on: June 29, 2012, 01:01:28 pm »
First of all, i am pretty sure this has been asked before but i don't know how to ask the search engine on the forum since i am unsure of the terminology i should use.

Is multy layered object possible in the future for DF ? I am sure at the moment it is impossible hence it is a programer related feature that needs to be added if i'm not wrong.
So in case the upper didn't make much sens, - to make items appear on character icon, as well as other states?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Some Q's
« on: September 16, 2010, 03:56:12 am »
I periodicly check bay 12 to see if any major updates occur for DF, one thing i don't know is weather updates, be them small or big, are backed up by graphical tilesets?

Ussualy i've seen mayday do an update of his graphical mod everytime there's a big update out, but in the mean time could there be a way to adjust the mod manualy to DF's small updates?

I mean i am pretty sure you guys do that, or at least some of you which preffer graphics
Also i've vistited the feature list reggarding future development of DF and my God it's so cool, other question is: what does Toady priorities on ? us adventure fans, or the Fortress mode?

And one last remark - i've been playing some -1 year old version- of DF and i noticed that the difficulty was more progressive than it is now, back then you would first go kill wolves ogres and such and after being pro you would go after dragons and demons. Now from what i feel, i just made an adventurer and just easily killed a dragon plus it's so hard to die now, than it was before, doesn't make much sense for me...

Did anyone else feel that this version is too easy?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Planned stuff for next release?
« on: November 27, 2009, 05:34:03 pm »
What exactly will we have for the next release in adventure mode?

I heard digging is going to be in, and something like the change of all body structure (will include skin, and all sorts...) ; what's that about, and when is it going to be in ? (in the next release?)

Other Games / Dragging-Wounded coop games
« on: August 26, 2009, 04:57:00 am »
Well since most of you people from this forum like rogue like games, i guess you also like the part where you get have only 1 life, and after that you're dead.

All i wanted to ask from you guys is to post ANY coop game that you know that has dragging functions, and even advanced medical aid...

I will post my own knowlage of these games in my past ''years research''

Enemy Infestation (quite nice)
Full Spectrum Warrior: Ten Hammers (superb game, the only part where they freaked up is that you could-not-die :-X )
WW1 medic (crazy about this game ^^, only bad part is...you can't multy )
Operation Flashpoint with some kind of mod SLX or something like that (has medical treatment, dragging, and even prisoners capturing - bad part - you could not coop i think with the mod)
Arma again with some mods-ons i belive... (but it kinda sucks up the resource and i can't play it)

I guess i went through more games but i can't recall them right now...

Your Turn.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Multigrasp
« on: August 14, 2009, 02:16:06 pm »
I noticed an iron halberd and mauls got multigrasp when i am not wearing a shield. What effect does this have? faster attack rate? bigger damage?  what skill do i use to block if i got only a weapon with multigrasp ? (guessing that shield skill is useless as this point...) can an attack be block only with weapon ?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / First aid ? medical aid ?
« on: August 12, 2009, 03:54:32 pm »
Are there any plannings for those things above? something like a skill?

Surgery? or first aid skill ?

would be very nice if there would also be a medical skill that can heal you while fast traveling the higher the medical the faster regen (supposedly the isnta' square walking regen  is removed)

first aid is for helping at the spot wounded creatures that will bleed to death (throut cuts and all)

and surgery for a more complex aproach on healing wounds (kinda unsure how to use this one, and on what)

But you guys got the rough idea.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Surviving mortal wounds?
« on: August 08, 2009, 02:10:06 am »
Yeah just played and was fighting a cougar, and it pierced my lung somehow... i quickly killed it, and then just jumped into the world map. After that i was completly healed. So all wounds that do not have permanent damage can be healed by fast traveling ? even mortal ones?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Where the heck...
« on: July 30, 2009, 04:17:50 am »
Are the random encounters? i mean seriously how can i get some skills if i have to walk throughout the map 10 minutes for an encounter? i guess i am not doing something i must have been doing? should i keep walking in local area than in travel mode? Eh sorry but i started playing DF for a week and some things are confusing...

And where can i find some companions? i read wiki and the guide help for adventurers and it said to ask some drunkards, but i kept searching for them for hours in human cities.

DF Gameplay Questions / Can't get out of travel mode
« on: July 29, 2009, 09:13:13 pm »
Hi there, this is my first post on this forum, so hi to all the incredible people who play this all incredible game.

Now the issue regarding my problem, is the one you see in the title... i simply can't quit travel mode in adventure mode once i press SHIFT + t. Mind you i did search the forums first with ''travel mode stuck'' and stuff similar like this but i didn't find anything.

And another thing worth mentioning is that i am using a laptop.
Ou, and final question: i've seen a lot of useful tutorials of DF but is there one for adventure mode?
