DF Suggestions / Arena Mode: Generate FB
« on: January 30, 2012, 06:44:55 am »
After a quick search, I could not find something on the subject. This, of course, means that it is doomed to be the fifth or so thread touting such a disclaimer, that a search was done and no result was found. Regardless, here's what I've to say:

Along with all the other assorted creatures in the Arena Mode spawning list, it would be nice to have a button that simply generates a forgotten beast from scratch.

Spoiler: HFS Spoilers! (click to show/hide)

It would be fun to play with, to see all the wacky combos you could receive, but it would also be nice to be able to generate them to check for problems with the ways their random materials work.

DF Modding / Block Press mod [Help!]
« on: June 14, 2011, 07:33:59 am »
So, I was trying to make a block-press. The block-press was meant to take ANY object (i.e, whatever object was nearest to the dwarf doing the task of pressing blocks) and turn it into a block of the same kind. Ideally, this would make blocks out of some weird stuff, like bones, booze, blood, corpses, etc. Unfortunately, my initial testing didn't work. Here's what I had.

Building -
Code: [Select]
[BUILDING_WORKSHOP:BLOCKPRESS]
[NAME:Block-Press]
[NAME_COLOR:7:0:1]
[DIM:1:1]
[WORK_LOCATION:1:1]
[BUILD_LABOR:MECHANIC]
[BLOCK:1:0]
[TILE:0:1:207]
[COLOR:0:1:0:7:0]
[TILE:1:1:207]
[COLOR:1:1:MAT]
[BUILD_ITEM:1:NONE:NONE:NONE:NONE][BUILDMAT][WORTHLESS_STONE_ONLY]
[BUILD_ITEM:2:TRAPPARTS:NONE:NONE:NONE][CAN_USE_ARTIFACT]

It's effectively a screw-press with a different name.
Reaction -
Code: [Select]
[REACTION:PRESS_BLOCK]
[NAME:press items into blocks]
[BUILDING:BLOCKPRESS:NONE]
[REAGENT:A:1:NONE:NONE:NONE:NONE] this was supposed to pick any item at all, which it does
[PRODUCT:100:1:BLOCKS:NO_SUBTYPE:GET_MATERIAL_FROM_REAGENT:A:NONE] this was supposed to turn the reagent into a block, which it doesn't
[SKILL:PRESSING]

Even though the reaction and building are in the entity_default.txt, the reaction doesn't work. It appears, the dwarf takes the job, the item is 'pressed' and then ... nothing comes out the other end. I literally watched my dwarfs shove every single item in their caravan into this sucker, only for it to make absolutely nothing.

So, help, pretty please? I just want my elf blood blocks and forgotten beast extract blocks and and human leather blocks and all that jazz.

General Discussion / Recipe Thread - For ALL recipes!
« on: January 15, 2011, 09:20:47 am »
Because the other recipe thread decided on having a theme to their recipes for a week, and because I could not honestly see 'Australian Cuisine' becoming a theme, I've decided to make my own thread.

List any recipes you have. Any at all, as long as they make something fit for human consumption at the end (e.g, no dwarven sugar roasts). It might also help to drop them into a spoiler tag with a title on it, for easy browsing.
Code: [Select]
[spoiler=title goes here][/spoiler]
Spoiler: ANZAC biscuits (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Lamington cake (click to show/hide)

And there you go. Enjoy!

DF Modding / Mass Clothing Mod
« on: January 12, 2011, 05:34:41 am »
Hiya there, amici! Doomshifter here. I'm currently in Italy at the moment (as an exchange student), and it's been a wonderful chance to let my mind wander. I got to thinking about my favourite video game and wondered, 'Man, if only my dwarves were stylishly dressed...'

So, I planned on making a slight modification. Nothing overly complex, just some additions of clothes. Lots of clothes. I know normally you guys detest having a certain foreign name for a similar item, and things like that, but what the hey. I'm making a list of as many clothing items as I can, and if you can spot a single thing I've missed, go ahead and tell me. Here's my list (so far!):

Headwear:

Upper Body

Lower Body

Hands

Feet

Unfortunately, I can't begin working on this till I get home in, oh, about a week and a half (at time of writing), so you CLEARLY EXCITED people will have to wait for this absolutely thrilling mod (sarcasm galore). Anyway, ciao Bay12. Just thought I'd put this here while I remember!

DF General Discussion / Happy Birthday to Toady One!
« on: April 16, 2010, 02:33:16 am »
If anyone noticed, right down the bottom of the forum index is a list of upcoming and current birth days. To my surprise, April 16th is Toady's birthday! So, happy birthday to our wonderful and glorious developer. May your years be long, your work be easy, your dwarven beer flow freely and your bugs be squashed!

Happy Birthday to you, Toady One!

I'd give you a present, but I have nothing to give ;w;

So, I had some silver bars, I thought I'd make some silver goblets to sell to the traders. My metalsmith grabs the bar of silver and some coke, runs to the forge and starts work. I check back a few minutes later to see his progress and lo and behold, there are three, shiny new iron goblets sitting there.

I had previously made three iron weapons, but apart from that had no other metals but silver. I tried it again, paying especial care to make sure it wasn't some weird iron bar, but he did indeed make iron goblets out of silver.

I've heard reports that other people got this too. Didn't see a thread though.

EDIT: This also happened with some golden flasks I tried to make, so it isn't just restricted to goblets or silver. But, it might (remotely) have something to do with the metalsmith's forge, not the magma forge. I am yet to have a magma forge up and running.

DF General Discussion / A White Christmas
« on: April 03, 2010, 12:08:33 am »
Snow. Snow!

Would you look at that... I'm walking through SNOW! Not just some ugly white ground, ACTUAL SNOW!
Not pictured is me collecting a few snowballs to throw at people later, hehehe...

Anyone seen the snow yet? It's amazing! Even the trees are white! The roofs are covered! So pretty!

EDIT: Immediately after I posted, I set a tree on fire. It made a big 5x5 square of ground around it melt and reveal the land underneath!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / New version and it's crazy statues...
« on: April 01, 2010, 07:39:54 am »
'This is a finely-crafted orthoclase statue of Adil Bridgeassault.
The item is a finely-designed image of Adil Bridgeassault the dwarf and flasks in orthoclase by Asob Solamuzol. Adil Bridgeassault is surrounded by the flasks.'

Adil is my chief medical dwarf and Asob is my mason. Apparently, Adil loves his flasks so much that Asob decided to make a statue of him absolutely surrounded by them. I put it in my communal bedroom so that all the dwarves could take note of Adil's flask fetish.

So, how are you guys going with the new version? What is your fortress shaping out to be? Seen anything weird?

Oh, and on another note, can anybody tell me how to work the military screen? I couldn't figure it out for the life of me...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / [MULTIPLE_LITTER_RARE] <-- Never remove it.
« on: February 13, 2010, 06:37:03 am »
I never realised how important that tag was till today. I thought, "So what! I'll have the occasional twin."

NO.
That is not what it does, man. I won't just get the odd twin or two.

Instead, one of my planters has given birth to six children over the last two years. Two sets of triplets. Goodness knows NEXT year she'll pop out the same. I'm waiting for the baby flood.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Obsidian Casting - How?
« on: January 12, 2010, 07:45:02 am »
I simply cannot find a straight answer for this with the search function.

Say, perhaps, I wished to make a huge obsidian-cast rectangular prism. Utterly massive. Say, for instance, I knew absolutely nothing more about this than the fact that I need water and magma. Would there be one among you fine ladies and gentlemen willing to explain, from start to finish, how to obsidian cast?

Any help whatsoever would be greatly appreciated.

They called me mad.

My name is Ms. Cog Shakenhatchet. Not too long ago, I submitted my grand idea to the king. My grand idea, a dwarven war machine that could cross oceans to wreak havoc on our enemies. I submitted plans for what I liked to call "Warvessels" or Alniseral in the dwarven tongue. The king laughed in my face, said it was impossible, said I was insane. "Metal plates, ballistae, 200 dwarves and the supplies needed for them? You think this will float?!" he laughed. Needless to say, I was dragged by my beard out of the king's quarters. But, I'll show them.

I've checked the maps. Here is the perfect location for my device, my battleship! There's water, magma, stone, wood and even a bottomless chasm cleft through the mountains! Someone told me that these mountains were terrifying. I don't think they could be that ugly.

So, I, Captain Cog, set out with six unfortunate fools dumb enough to follow me.

Okay, so I found a site and I was going to make a battleship. Suddenly I was hit with the urge to write, and I found that the Terrifying hills could be quite Fun! Just pick a dwarf, tell me what you want them named and how they would act, and a preferred job. Captain Cog is a mason/architect/mechanic with social skills. I still need a miner and woodcutter, if that's what you'd like.

Anywho, go ahead and pick! Make suggestions as to what I should do, etc. I haven't embarked yet, so initial supplies suggestions are open too.

If I don't get any new people within half an hour, I will embark with what I have. You can name/claim them afterwards. I need to be able to save it!

DF Gameplay Questions / Legends Mode: ...killed by an unknown creature...?
« on: December 30, 2009, 05:57:25 am »
Quote
In 123, Thele was shot and killed by an unknown creature in Bridgeglistened.

Quote
A: 21 elves, 141 unknown creatures, 6 losses.
D: 14 humans, 3 unknown creatures, one loss.

Defender was victorious.

Unknown creatures? What are they? Is this what happens when you have 'cull unimportant figures'? Because, I think killing someone is fairly important.

Okay, this is a bit of a weird question. I have a rather nice TV hooked up as my computer screen. It's all lovely and shit. The only problem is, it has a kinda dumb screen resolution, and I can't figure out how to make my dwarf fortress look nice and square with it. (Not to mention, I managed it on some level and then accidentally wrote over it and forgot how I did it.)

My screen resolution is 1024 by 768. I'm using the built-in Curses tileset, so I have the 640x300, 800x600 and 16x16 fonts. Given the fact that the 16x16 says square in the name, I tried that. I went fullscreen, and my monitor promptly shat itself and gave me a little note saying 'UNSUPPORTED'. Stupid awesome screen.

So, I'm no good with computers. Help me out? Even if I can only get it back to how it was... which I forgot how that was done. Yeah, I'm an idiot.

EDIT: I managed to get it back to how it was before by turning on the black spaces setting, but it still gives me two huge black bars. Ah well, it will suffice till we figure this out!

Title says it all. What should I build? Keep in mind that I'm cheating because I just want to build something, so give me something ridiculously enormous to build. I have a smelter reaction for every possible metal and a few rare gems, my dwarves are lightspeed automatons. I have a cave river on the map and nothing more.

So, what stupidly ridiculous mega-construction should I do? Any suggestions?

Here, have a picture of the pit.
