DF General Discussion / Nobles.
« on: August 12, 2006, 11:59:00 am »
Just curious, what generates the appearance of nobles? Value of all the items in your fort? Number of dwarves? How much crap you trade with caravans? A combination of all three?

Maybe I need more drugs and corruption to bring in the politics.

DF General Discussion / Monster frequency.
« on: August 11, 2006, 04:41:00 pm »
I'm just a little curios as to what the frequency tends to be for evil creatures. So far, out of three fortresses, I've only been attacked by things that weren't flatly animals once. A group of frogmen hopped out of the underground river in my third fortress, which seems to be in a more polar region of my world, as the outdoor river's been frozen year-round.

I'm also having an issue with puppies overrunning the place. Had two dogs with us when we started, and they've been having puppies like crazy.

DF General Discussion / Longest surviving outpost?
« on: August 11, 2006, 12:45:00 am »
So, how well are you all keeping your dwarves in working order? My second attempt (out of two so far) lasted about... 3.5 years before a wave of immigrants a bit larger than I could handle showed up. Try as I might, I couldn't get enough food fast enough (as I had only figured out how to smelt and make weapons minutes beforehand, hunting wasn't a good option (I couldn't figure out what I was supposed to be gathering for the smelter)), and people started getting unhappy.

This lead to a massive brawl after someone threw a tantrum and stormed into the party room, also pull of unhappy people, and knocked out a child in one blow. By the end of the brawl, blood was everywhere and the only people left were 4 dwarves who ran off and locked themselves in their rooms and died of thirst.

Kinda depressing, eh?  ;)

DF General Discussion / Possible bug.
« on: August 10, 2006, 11:09:00 pm »
I couldn't find the other topic that mentioned people running way off to the corner of the map to grab food from nowhere, but I've just experienced this myself

Got about 20 dwarves, running a bit low on food in the middle of the winter, when one of my miners runs out of the fort and starts heading for the hills. Intrigued, I followed him along... and by the time I caught up to him, he was coming back from the far northeastern corner with some cheese (I think). Interesting note is that no merchants have been killed in this game.

So he went off to the northeast and apparently pulled some cheese out of the ground. Or bought it off the deer wandering around the area.

DF General Discussion / Posessed?
« on: August 10, 2006, 08:52:00 pm »
...My jewelcrafter just got Possessed. Game paused and everything. He's blinking with a pink exclamation point.

He doesn't seem to be doing anything particularly harmful. Just claimed his workshop and started cutting gems. But I get the feeling this isn't as innocuous as it seems...

DF General Discussion / Coal and Ashes
« on: August 10, 2006, 06:24:00 pm »
My second go at a Dwarven Outpost is going far, far better than the first. Not counting that the original farmer dwarf got eaten by a bear and that racoons keep harrassing the poor dwarves.

Question, though. How do I make coal and ashes and the like for the Metalsmith and the Ashery? Would a Furnace do this?

I could, of course, just build one and find out, I suppose. But why do that when I can ask a (likely) stupid question?

DF General Discussion / Humorous/Memorable Adventurer fates?
« on: August 09, 2006, 05:23:00 pm »
I'm really, really, -really- bad at making a successful Dwarven Outpost, so in between whittling away the dwarven race in my world, I've been making a lot of (unfortunate) human adventurers. Most of them meeting horrible but predictable fates.

One that sticks out in my mind, however, isn't all that normal. On a quest to kill a cyclops with the most complicated name I've ever seen, he started getting shredded by naked mole rat dogs. After being horribly maimed, he ran into said cyclops and quickly met his fate.

Head smashed in with a helmet of fox leather. Ironic that head armor would be the cause of fatal head trauma.

Anyone else have any particularly interesting moments of death?

DF General Discussion / Question about Wells.
« on: August 08, 2006, 07:01:00 pm »
Long time fan of all the Bay 12 work, just now got a forum name.  ;)

But, as the title suggests, I'm curious about wells. Or more exactly, why I can't build one. It keeps telling me that I need 'rock blocks' and a bucket. I've got several buckets and made a bunch of blocks with 'use rock' set in the mason's workshop. Why can't I put them together into a well?

DF General Discussion / Most Artifacts at one time?
« on: August 19, 2006, 06:31:00 pm »
So, what's the most artifacts you all have managed to amass at one point? I just got my third one.

Usurselor Uristtun Asol. "Spoiledrites the Dagger-Door of Seizing". It's a deer leather buckler. That menaces with spikes of more deer leather. I doubt those spikes do much menacing, really.

DF General Discussion / Most common loss of outposts?
« on: August 13, 2006, 09:05:00 pm »
Just another little thread to catalogue your common fortress killers. Figure since I made a humorous adventurer death thread, might as well make a death-o-logue for these, too!

My number one killer, by far, is a HUGE wave of migrants that always decide to show up at the start of winter. The particular winter they show up varies, but they show up, eat all my food, and everyone goes insane and starts killing cats, which gets more people pissed... and you see where this is going.  ;)

How about the rest of you? Invasions? Floods? Stupidity?

DF General Discussion / Inflate Error
« on: August 20, 2006, 08:33:00 pm »
My current fortress, which I've been trying to abandon because I want the legends entries and everything's gone so far down hill I'm too lazy to try fixing it, keeps crashing when it tries to offload the various units.

It gets up to 65/140, pauses, then splits out 'Inflate Error -3'. Anything I can do to get around this?

I can provide the save if I'm directed to a place to put the file.
