I haven't played DF since 2010, but there used to be entrances to the cave system in monster lairs, and if you delved deep enough you found the funny structures with the special weapons and some stairs (don't know if this still exists, so this is some purposeful vagueness for spoilers).

The game has changed super much since then, is it still interesting to go down to the caves? How can you reach the caves? What are some cool new things to look out for in the caves?

Here is an old thread talking about it

That thread was really fun, what kind of things do you find in your adventures to the deep?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Hydra's greatest weakness
« on: November 12, 2010, 03:18:24 pm »
Turns out that a hydra's greatest weakness in adventurer mode is getting stabbed, slashed, hacked and hammered at by 20 human recruits for about 100 rounds.
But boy, can they take a pounding.

And if you are a high level swordsman, you can go claim some heads!

I'm pretty sure we were in danger of drowning in all that blood...

That terrible brutal unrefined jerk of a bronze collosus has hurt me most horribly.

Note: This wound doesn't heal from travelling.

I am maimed! I cannot bear to look at myself in the mirror, not in this state!

Buhuu, such woe and strife that befalls me constantly, how am I to live in such a cruel indifferent world, its horrid glaring brightness now in a most uncultured manner intruding its roughness into my delicate unprotected eye, ever reminding me of how my existence is suffering. Oh, how I suffer, you do not know, you cannot know, how it is I suffer.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The King is no more
« on: March 10, 2010, 06:06:23 am »
So my king, whom I had been pitting in goblin combat to get the "doesn't care about anything anymore" trait, went berserk. He did this because all the other nobles also had royal everything rooms, despite the fact that his are about 5 times better (3 tier throne room with platinum, gold, silver, steel, bronze and clear glass masterworks!? Not enough!).
Now the thing is, his palace was not yet 100% finished when he died. Things like doors (to be made or rose gold, which has to be imported) are missing and I am working on building a waterfall and two magmafalls in the throne room, so the palace will be completed!
This brings upon a dilema, the only person in the palace is the advisor, as the king had no spouse. That means I have a huge empty facility.
Now, whom should announce king? There are many different candidates and options.

1) I had a couple of (impractical) Dukes before my current one, one of which actually gave birth to a baby girl before she died. This girl has a custom profession "Ducal Orphan" and is now a champion in the royal guard. The cons to her being queen are that she is in the Royal Guard, and thus will spend all her time in the barracks and use the extremely luxurious facilities sparingly (for eating and sleeping, the throne room may aswell be shut down).

2) The current Duke. One of the few candidates who will actually use the throne room, showing its splendour to the elven and human diplomats. This brings about the problem as what to do with his current "palace" aswell as what to do with his wife.

3) The acting mayor. The mayor will meet with upset dwarves in the grandest room imaginable. And since my mayor is also (always, regardless if another one is elected) my record keeper and manager, he will use his throne room for work. The flip side is that updating records or processing orders for the construction of goods seems a little mundane for such a room.

4) One of the current Duke's children. They would act as a normal peasant, never using the throne room, but will use the other facilities more often than the royal guard.

Reading what I wrote, the only real options seem to be the mayor or the duke.

So, any advice?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Urvad, you glutton!
« on: March 08, 2010, 09:22:26 am »
So I was checking out my stores of prepared meals when I noticed there was an abnormal amount of "single" prepared meals lying about.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Curious, I zoom in. Oh what do you know, it belongs to somebody.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He must be eating it! Ooh, interesting, by looking at "single" stacks of food, I can see who is busy eating. I zoom in on the next one. Strange, it belongs to the same dwarf, one Urvad Glazedromanaces the Speeches of Heaven. I take a look at the next one, it also belongs to Urvad! I skip down one page and look at another one. This one too belongs to Urvad.

Urvad has claimed 134 prepared plump helmet roasts (7 pages, with each page being 19 units and one "extra unit" before a roast claimed by somebody else appears).
These roasts are all sitting in food stockpiles, all split into "single" stacks. I have never seen something like this before, its almost as if she fears bad days may be ahead and is stocking up.

This brings me to another problem. Urvad is a champion of the fortress and has earned a title through 6 kills (one of which a bronze colossus). I can't just dispose of her like I would of a normal "nobody", these kind of dwarves have a special place in my heart. The only other "plus points" dwarves get in my fortress are being fortress born, having a nickname and having a custom profession, all of which are rare traits.

So, other than me simply presenting this peculiarity to you, as is customary, what should I do? Should I give her a custom profession or nickname as a reward for entertaining me with a display of eccentricity or toss her in a volcano for being impractical?

Edit: sorry I forgot images

DF Gameplay Questions / Single King
« on: January 19, 2010, 10:05:27 am »
My king recently arrived (he's an accomplished axedwarf and came wielding a steel axe, yay!). However, he doesn't appear to be married, as such can't spawn children (whom I would give the custom professions of "Crown Prince" and "Royal Blood" to follow his line once he kicks the dust).

My question is this, can the king marry a denizen of the fortress? (He also doesn't appear to have a spouse/lover listed in his relationship panel.)

DF Gameplay Questions / Flying Guard
« on: January 02, 2010, 08:55:46 am »
So one of my fortress guards has attained enlightenment and is now floating in the barracks sharing his eternal wisdom with his buddies. The fortress cannot tolerate this, a dwarf must work, enlightenment is for the philosopher!

How can I fix the bug where a dwarf is seemingly flying? :S

Friendship is really weird in dwarf fortress, for example my dungeon master has the carpenter marked as his only friend, yet he doesn't even show up as a "passing acquaintance" for the carpenter (the carpenter doesn't know him). Which frankly creeps me out. Some weird fellow you don't even know with a fascination for dangerous animals, who calls himself "the dungeon master" and who often walks around wearing 5 cloaks, one sock and nothing else thinking you are his best friend? The only thing creepier would be if the dungeon master had done some jail time.
Also, the carpenter is a pretty public figure, being friends with alot of important legendaries in my fort, although a few of them died a long while ago.
(The dungeon master also has the "avoids crowds" trait, is self conscious and doesn't experience cravings or urges. Truly, he is a miserable, crazed, lonely man who is dead inside.)

The first screen of the dungeon master and carpenters relationship status.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Wild Camels have settled inside my fortress
« on: November 02, 2009, 02:34:41 pm »
Just thought I would share this little anecdote from my fortress, which I found particularly amusing.

On several occasions have I noticed that wild camels were running around in my fortress proper.
The first time I noticed it, I sent a soldier to deal with it, but it must have moved to a different location before he arrived since when I checked up on him again he didn't have any camel kills listed.
I saw them on and off in the less well-travelled areas of my fort every now and then, but I left them alone since they didn't seem to do any harm (no death by camel yet) and it seemed pretty cool to have a "mascot" community of camels roaming around in the base, fighting the tamed animals in a turf war.

Of course, they occasionally come across my black bear or my giant eagle or even the fortress / royal guards, and get their ass handed to them.

Currently there are sadly only two wild camels left in my base (and the entire map) (a third wandered into a cage trap and I will be releasing it shortly), of which one, the female, is seriously injured and the male is hovering around her. I doubt it will survive, and since the one in the cage is a male, this means the end for the wild camel settlement / infestation here at Inkstaff. Oh well, they will be missed.

DF Gameplay Questions / Double inventory item?
« on: November 02, 2009, 02:06:07 pm »
I looked at one of my dwarves and saw this
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I don't know how it happened, viewing the "item" only lets me see the mountain goat leather waterskin, not the racoon leather whatever. I can't even see what slot it is in.

What would be the cause for this?

DF Gameplay Questions / What's wrong with this mist generator?
« on: October 31, 2009, 10:46:48 am »
So I built this mist generator for my outdoor statue garden and filled it up by designating pond zones, however the water will not move. The screw pumps are all correctly aligned so that it should pump in a circle, but no water will move, at all.
What am I doing wrong?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Note that although the screw pump to the top right is marked as being submerged, it is pumping from west to east. The eastern part is submerged because a pond zone was designated above it and I dropped 1 water there before disabling that area.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dwarven Excrement
« on: October 18, 2009, 01:05:07 pm »
Dwarves never go to the toilet. The only thing that dwarves expel from their bodies are little dwarves.
Conclusion: Babies are made of dwarven "waste".

Now I know why dwarves love mud! They are mud!

DF Modding / How to make animals breed?
« on: October 18, 2009, 09:00:08 am »
What are the tags that allow animals to have children?
I recently captured a Sasquatch (yay!), and have already added the [PET_EXOTIC] tag to it and tamed it, now I want to get it to breed (there is a wild male sasquatch roaming around on the map too), but I don't know what tags are necessary to get it to do so.
I looked at the wiki, but there seem to be multiple tags associated with breeding, [CHILD:#][BABY:#] and so on. I can pretty much guess that the #s are for how long they will be children/babies, but do these tags allow for breeding? Or are other tags necessary? And do I need to specify specific things in some sort of "baby-file" or something?
Thanks for any help!
