DF Suggestions / Designation over Z-Levels
« on: July 02, 2010, 05:01:14 am »
I find that it is so simple and easy to designate on X and Y axis, but when you need to dig downwards or upwards, especially with our now massive amount of Z-levels, that it is quite tedious to designate each and every seperate staircase, when what you Could be doing is designating not in layers, but instead in nodes.

I will now demonstrate, using a Rubiks cube.
This is the current system, note how you have to inefficiently take a step for each layer, redesignation the entire area you want to dig.

This is when you designate over Z-levels

as you can see, when you need to redo all of your selection for each Z level you want to have done, there is a lot of work involved compared to simply designating the area once, and how deep you want it once.
Two steps, instead of dozens.

DF Modding / This land is your land, this land is my land.
« on: July 02, 2010, 04:26:44 am »
While doing a challenge involving having all dwarves have seperate plots, something occured to me.
Friends should be able to help out eachother on their farms and homes.
but the issue with it being, it is very difficult to keep up with, as starting dwarves are often friends with 2 dwarves, who would meet at their mutual friends home and become friends.
How difficult would it be to create an application which signals you that dwarves have become friends? and beyond that, how difficult would it be, to have owned property (set via beds tables and chairs ect) to be added to a burrow which each dwarf is linked to.

(if it isnt clear what I mean, I'm saying that I have 7 dwarves with 7 burrows, each dwarf has their own burrow which is used for their home, a land grant if you will. The dwarves will allow friends to come onto their land, by adding them to the list of dwarves on each burrow while keeping those burrows exclusively linked to the dwarf who owns the land)

DF Modding / Work around farming trees
« on: June 26, 2010, 04:05:24 pm »
I'm trying to figure out a way to farm trees in a way that does not seem like a cheat.

so far it seems that I'll need to have a reaction which gets seeds from trees, then the plants will be transported into a very large "treefield" workshop where they will be converted into trees.

I'm sort of thinking that I should leave out getting the seeds from trees though, that way they are something you need to embark with or work a little harder to get if you want to farm trees.

does anyone have any suggestions?
I'll also have to make a new sapling plant type for every type of tree

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Item Transportation systems
« on: April 14, 2010, 05:50:00 pm »
I'm working on a non-dumping system for mass item transportation, working with water pressure and canals.

so far its a system of badly placed aquifiers which fly water into another one and tosses the items off to the other side of a floor grate, if I could make those items move TWO squares instead of the ONE square, I'd be set for this system to work out in a complex awesome way.

But as is, nothing more than a log flow sadly.

Does anyone else have a water-based transportation system for dwarves or items?

DF General Discussion / Toady's Grand Fortunes
« on: March 11, 2010, 12:57:41 am »
Before reading note that all information I have listed here is already public information, I've only grouped it and put together here.

I've been seeing a lot of accusations lately thrown about toady's grand fortunes of donations, so I decided to get some rough figures together for people to think about.
Hopefully this will clear some things up for those people.

I tallied last years numbers from the announcements, you might note that febuary last year was roughly the same as this one as well,

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I'll do that now actually, for a decent bacholer pad if I can find it, but if someone actually knows his actual rent disregard this.
Also does he have a car? I don't so I save bundles already there.

Looking at rents in his area here http://www.rentals.com/Washington/Bremerton-Silverdale/
I have come to a rough figure of 825$ a month for renting a fairly modest but comfortable place. (But what if he has a mortgage?)

$32516.44
-$9900.00
$22616.44
Anyone from the area have a rough grocery bill?
Insurance for the home?
Does he have any medications or health issues?
How much furniture does scamps tear up on him?
Car Insurance (if he has a car, and if not, bus pass or taxi fees?)
Does he travel anywhere out of town?
What does toady do for fun, and how much does it cost him?
Old loans to pay off?
How much can he put away for a rainy day?
How much can he put away for retirement?

If you factor that all in, money can disappear very fast.
I dont need to worry about the majority of those expenses, which is why I can afford living on $10800, and why other young people like me in college, can afford to do so.
Considering how talented he is, how much of a following he has, and all those other factors, he could be working for some big game company as a programmer making around $80000 more than the $32500 quite easily.

Anyone who thinks he is tossing our money around and not giving anything back to us is simply a fool.

I'm going to make a donation now myself, and it will be the best 20 dollars I have ever spent in my life.

Edit: Locking the topic as it seems to be giving nothing but grief even though my intentions were to help toady get donations in some of the lesser donation months, and show some of the possible donators who are not in the real world yet what it takes for a person to live.

this is my wrestling champion squad, as I'm on a map with very little means of making weapons other than cross bows and need tight quarters defense.

"The Rough Champions" What a suitable name! and LOOK! Even better. Try to pronounce the name in Dwarven.  :D

Other Games / Infiniminer

Since all the other threads are from around last may or farther back, I've decided to bring up this little gem again to you, my friends at Bay12.

Also, would anyone like to play? I'd put up the dedicated server myself but this connection here has a long laster case of the synchronous diaphragmatic flutters (hiccups)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Whats your Silliest effective defenses
« on: February 18, 2010, 06:47:20 am »
In my current fort, I've set up a gearassembly to the top my gate, hooked up to a pressure plate.
Attached to this gear assembly is a waterwheel, unpowered of course.
When I pull that lever, it falls upon the goblin invaders, knocking them into my checkerboard of channels and causing serious injuries.
I then use a bucket brigade to pour water into a pipe next to the gear assembly, and it pours ontop of the goblins.
By the time the goblins are drown, usually one or two of them has become adept enough at swimming to get out of the hole and attack.

Too bad for them, I keep my chickens and rabbits at the entrance.  :D

DF General Discussion / Virtual pet dwarves
« on: January 26, 2010, 12:36:41 am »
Does anyone else remember using cute little things like this?
http://www.goldfiles.com/portal.php?fileid=323
Its a desktop pet, something that just sits around doing their own thing.

My question is, Does anyone else think they would enjoy it if there was a desktop Urist? Perhaps a cheeky little bugger running around engraving things into your screen  :D

I'm sure these are relatively simple for someone to program, so I just thought I'd ask about and see who else would like to see something like this before I decided to go on spending a few days learning how to make something and then not doing it in the end  ::)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Challenge Structures.
« on: January 22, 2010, 08:53:39 pm »
I was checking the daily deviations on Deviant Art, and saw this http://k-hos.deviantart.com/art/022-151256511
It got me thinking, that may totally be possible in Dwarf Fortress..
I counted it out and its somewhere between 40-50 layers.

I havent yet done an extreme challenge structure, but I think that this one might be worth my time to do, but am still unsure.
Is anyone seeing any possible reasons that it wouldnt work?
The only one I'm noticing other than height and materials (materials easily solved via magma farming if needed) would be the two pillars of engravings, which I can do by using decorated clear glass. (Can I even do that?..)

DF Modding / Damaged Item Reaction Targeting (D.I.R.T)
« on: January 22, 2010, 08:06:10 am »
In the next version, will it be possible to target damaged or worn items for reactions? I was thinking of making a custom workshop to repair clothes, armor, and weapons.

DF Modding / Vermin are not nice to eat.
« on: November 25, 2009, 04:06:50 pm »
If I wanted to get rid of dwarves abilities to look for vermin to eat when starving, instead of butchering animals, would I, and how would I be able to go about this?
