Other Games / What are your top 3 most-played games?
« on: December 12, 2013, 12:05:07 pm »
In addition, what's your estimate regarding how much time you've spent playing them?

In the order of hours played, mine are:
1. Minecraft, in all its modded glory
Time Played: So many I don't even know. Been playing since '09, before Indev survival mode
2. Mount and Blade Warband and its various mods
Time played: 412 hours according to Steam and probably many more, considering that one of my most-played mods has a separate launcher
3. EVE Online.
Time played: Lots, been playing on and off since '08.

General Discussion / New wave of copyright nonsense on YouTube
« on: December 11, 2013, 04:23:42 pm »
YouTube goes even further down the shitter.

Thousands of copyright claims are going out to random videos, many of which are invalid to the point of ridiculousness, from companies no one (including the only companies that may actually have a claim

General Discussion / New YouTube Silliness.
« on: November 07, 2013, 01:52:55 pm »
Well, as many of you probably know, YouTube just pushed it out an update yesterday that is forcing Google+ integration to use YT's major functions such as commenting and uploading videos. In doing so, they have managed to piss off a hell of a lot of people. Your thoughts?

Also, here is a petition I found for those so inclined.

He has sources, the leaked documents in question are available, and it's gotten over 1,000 likes in less than two hours. The view count is still uncalculated.

Oh, and it's on The Imageboard That Shall Not Be Named.

This... This might be newsworthy.

General Discussion / Dissent in the United States
« on: July 05, 2013, 02:01:24 am »
It has become clear to myself, acquaintances of mine, and many others on the internet and elsewhere through conversation, discussion, information, and personal experience, that dissent towards the American government is rising.

For the purposes of discussion what do you think about this, its causes, and how it may affect America in the future?

I have become unsatisfied with the original thread due to the general clutter, poor writing, inconsistencies, and general bad. It can be found here, but is quite poorly written, inconsistent, and is not recommended reading. This is especially true for the first ten pages. This thread picks up where the last left off however, so no progress was lost. However, some details have been changed from the poorly thought out ones from the old thread. In addition, there is of course a certain amount of creative license here.

A full textwall of background fluff and information will be written and posted in the OP soon*, but for now here is an update. The most basic rudiments of the story are that you are a newly born daemon in the Warhammer 40K universe. The date is 342.776.M41. For those unfamiliar with this dating system, this means that it is the forty-first millennium of the year 342, day 776. In WH40K, each year is divided into 1,000 parts. Anyway, we are currently on a Feudal World by the name of Attica, with a population of about 200 million. Fully half of them live in the titanic hive city of the planetary capital, with spires reaching dozens of kilometers into the sky. The planetary defense force is comprised of 2 million troops divided into one thousand regiments, though the best ten percent are inducted into the Imperial Guard as per regulations. This makes the PDF inherently inferior to the Imperial Guard, though they are often the first and only line of defense against a potential invasion.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Sighing inwardly, you realize that at the moment the mine and those hiding inside it are more trouble than they're worth.
The three conscious miners in front of you are frozen in terror, making it disappointingly easy to dispach them.
With a flash of claws, one man's head is messily torn to pieces. With another, a throat is neatly slit and its owner collapses to the floor, gurgling. As the last miner turns to run he collapses heavily to the floor, blood gushing from an unseen hole between his ribs and through his heart. (+6 Strength, +2 Mind, +3 Souls)
Realizing your hunger, you open your mouth impossibly wide and devour the last, unconscious miner in a single bite. (+5 Strength, +1 Soul, -1 hunger penalty)
With that taken care of, you realize that the tasks remaining in the mine could be relegated to minions. Ripping off a finger from one of the dead miners, you draw a circle in blood on the floor. Surrounding it, you carefully weave several enchantments out of a long-lost language only known to yourself and an incredibly small number of mortals. In the center, you etch the traditional Chaos rune for death with your claw, and stand back.

Retrieving the pair of ghosts you released and the oldest three captured souls as well, you start the ritual. Eldrich flames whirl around the summoning circle, and a dirty red light glows from the various runes on the floor. With a terrible chorus of screams, cries, and less identifiable sounds the pair of ghosts are merged into a single, partially corporeal body. A spectre.
They are distinctly unhappy at being merged into one form, but are quickly able to work things out. Meanwhile, the red glow becomes even more sinister and  for the second time in a day, a chill wind whips through the entirety of the mine. One by one, the souls are transformed into similar, but less intelligent entities. (-8 Mind, -2 Ghosts, -3 Souls, +3 Spectres, +1 Spectre Herald)

With this work done, you order the Herald to take command of the three lesser spectres and remove the miners by any means necessary.
"It will be done, Lord. None shall escape". it hisses. Having never experienced commanding truly intelligent beings before, you are quite pleased with the newfound feeling of power.
With a rippling of etheral cloaks, alien utterances, and a flash of matte black, ghostly claws the spectres race down the tunnel with the Herald in the lead. Within a few seconds, you clearly hear screams echo from the lower tunnels and the pleasing crack of bone against rock.

Striding down into the upper workings of the mine, you immediately see evidence of the spectres' handiwork. Barricades are overturned or smashed, a pickaxe is lodged into the wall to its shaft, and two eviscerated corpses lie on the floor surrounded by pools and spatters of a seemingly impossible amount of blood. Passing them, you see a headless corpse slumped against a wooden support with another impressive spray of blood dripping from the ceiling.

Reaching into the mind of the Herald, you see that he is lurking in a tunnel, observing the last bastion of the miners' defense. The other spectres are nearby in the blackness, having extinguished every torch they could find. Six men brandishing pickaxes and another gripping a sword are trapped in a dead-end passage with strong barricades of wood and stone barring the entrance.
You note that this leaves one man of the original twenty unaccounted for. You have personally killed nine, and the spectres have taken another three. As you continue to approach the miners' position, your mild annoyance is dispelled. The one you had not been able to account for is shattered against a wall, his head crushed and limbs at all the wrong angles.
Coming face-to-face with the Herald, you ask why he has not yet decorated the mine with their entrails.

"That sword is blessed. Even a scratch can kill us." You sigh in irritation, exploding the sword and the man holding it with a flick of your wrist. (-2 Mind, +1 Soul)

"Well there you go, kill them all!" you growl.

Seeing your eyes flash blue in the darkness, the miners advance to take full advantage of their barricade, which is promptly punched through by the Herald. In the resulting chaos, the spectres claw five miners to pieces.
Seizing upon a sinister idea, you quickly order them to  let the last one live. Somewhat irritated, the Herald still gives him a good slash across the chest before falling back.

As they approach you again, you notice that the Herald and two of the three other spectres are leaking  a dirty red light, the telltale sign of the Warp. You quickly realize that they have been wounded and give them permission to feed on the corpses. What happens next surprises you. Instead of immediately tearing into them, they proceed to pummel and crush the bodies, shattering bones and pulping the soft tissue. While they feed on their tenderized meals, you ensure that the last miner is  alive and stand  before him in the tunnel.

"Today is your lucky day. Few survive coming face-to-face with a daemon, but I have decided to let you live. Now go, and tell your friends about me. I'm sure they will be interested in your story."

"Th...Tha...Thank you!" he stammers, and you stand aside to let him pass. As he stumbles along in the darkness, you provide him a guiding light to the surface. Spreading terror is always nice, you muse.

Taking stock of the situation, you see that the spectres are gnawing on the remains of five of the corpses, occasionally spitting out bone fragments. There is very little left, and much of it is unrecognizable as human at all due to the splintered and broken skeletons. As they finish, you order them to take all of the intact corpses to the meeting room in the upper levels of the mine. They grumble at being used for such menial tasks, but comply nonetheless.

Making your way back to the meeting room, you spot the fleeing survivor and smile to yourself as he sees the clawed monstrosities carrying his colleagues away. Reaching the room, you see you have five relatively intact corpses to work with and three so damaged that at first glance are unsuitable for anything but food. Unfortunately, meat and especially corpses have an unfortunate tendency to rot, so you deftly skin and gut them with your claws, then preserve them with a quick burst of magic. This method of preservation ruins the taste a bit, but is easy and effective. (-1 Mind)
Searching the rest of the mine with the spectres, you find a small crate of hardtack, a number of pickaxes, some wood, a small amount of iron, and several mattocks.
Piling the food in a corner, you consider what to do next.

Essentially what it says on the tin. A New Zealand court found the warrants used to raid his house and seize his possessions and data was found to be illegal and all assets not directly relevant to the investigation must be returned to him. The story can be found here

You wake up, finding yourself on the stone floor of a small, dim room. A beam of sunlight shines through the window, and a small basin of water stands on a table in the corner. A crude door hangs on rusted iron hinges in the center of one wall. Looking down, you find that your skin has a translucent purplish hue, and your fingers have wicked-looking claws in place of nails. You are wearing a torn and ragged tunic and trousers made of hemp.

Spatters of blood coat the floor, but it doesn't appear to be yours.

The Federal Solar Alliance, the official governing body of all mankind, is in danger of stagnation and fracture. Great corporations own nearly a third of the Alliance's territory, some driving entire worlds to ruin through their greed. The government does not have the starships available to act as a galactic police force, and has no practical way of stopping these actions without causing further damage to itself. Further complicating matters, many of these corporations have their own private armies and fleets, giving any aggressive act on the part of the FSA a chance to cost greatly in terms of both resources and lives. Thus, as long as taxes are paid, the military and law enforcement are forced to turn a blind eye. The simple fact is that the government does not have the money to fund a vast police force, so individual planetary governments and the entities owning them are often given free reign.

Both leading to and because of this, free trade and unchecked capitalism flourishes, often turning into full-fledged war between various factions. Sometimes these conflicts are five-or six way free-for-alls over a particular world or solar system, and others are quietly taken care of behind closed doors. In turn, a huge variety of consumer goods are available, most of which are completely unregulated by necessity. Further complicating this bureaucratic nightmare is the fact that there are not one, but two methods of faster-than-light travel, and the reality behind one of them may be a threat to the known universe.

The FSA's response to this chaotic situation is to stimulate the growth of new, federally-owned colonies by making easily available the materiél and transport capacity necessary for the founding of such colonies. In doing so they risk giving the general population access to dangerous technology, but this risk is considered an acceptable one.

And so the Federal Solar Alliance Colonization Initiative was born, reaching out across the stars to expand the reach and prosperity of humanity.

You, until now, were a middle-class technician with a few years of military experience from the local defense force. Seeing the vast amount of goods for sale and the vision of an untouched, virgin world were all you needed to sign up and try to make a name for yourself. Situated in a vast complex orbiting Gilese 581c, preparations are being made to send out a great fleet to previously mapped, but untouched systems.

The year is 2381, and the stars are yours.

Technology
The technology of the 2380's is, of course, vastly superior to current technology in many areas. Nanotechnology, faster-than-light travel, sentient AI, genetic modification, and cloning are all aspects of everyday life, one way or another.

-Military Tech
While plasma and laser weapons on all scales are available, traditional chemical-propellant firearms are still in wide use, owing mostly to the fact that a weapon made of metal and plastic and firing simple, solid projectiles is far easier to maintain than the heat sinks, power systems, particle accelerators, and focusing lenses of energy weapons. Advances in the weapons we know so well today have, of course been made. LPFs (Liquid Propellant Firearms) and mass drivers (essentially coilguns) are also commonly found on the black market as well as battlefields. Armor has advanced to counter new weapons as well, with commercially viable nanotechnology ushering in a new era of nanocomposites. Meticulously designed on a molecular scale, nanocomposites are many times lighter, stronger, and more expensive than conventional materials and have found uses in every walk of life.

-Civilian Tech
In the civilian world, massive advances in manufacturing take the front page. While expensive, systems capable of consuming nearly any resource and reorganizing its structure into useful goods have become commonplace. Great starships dwarfing aircraft carriers number in the hundreds and a man may buy a smaller ship as he might buy a sports car in today's society. Advances in medicine have raised the average lifespan to one hundred and fifty, and robots and clones handle many menial tasks across the Alliance.

-FTL
There are, as mentioned above, two methods of faster-than-light travel. The first is a "traditional" Alcubierre Drive, and the second is rather more complicated. Instead of merely bending space-time, the Rift Drive punches a hole through it to something... else. This other is most often called the Rift and is deserving of its name. Upon entering it, nothing can be seen but the appearance of an infinitely large, ethereal chasm glowing dimly in crimson light. It is said that looking at it for too long can cause horrific madness, and stories abound of ships coming out of the Rift without a living soul on board, with all manner of grotesque ends befalling the crew. That said, the Rift is popular among smugglers and risk-taking traders due to the fact that traveling through it takes far less time than using an Alcubierre drive.
More disturbing are the reports that similar things have begun happening entirely separate from faster-than-light travel, sometimes in the great arcologies of developed worlds.

Keeping that all in mind, there are a titanic variety of goods for sale. Habitation modules rated for anything from a midsummer day's breeze to Venusian blast furnaces are available, along with manufacturing units ranging from the size of an air conditioner to a warehouse. Weapons, weapons are being pushed very hard by the marketers. Everything from 20th-century tech assault rifles and handguns to the very latest in pulsed-laser and plasma beam technology are available, as are vehicles from dune buggies to battle tanks. Clone servitors and androids can be bought by the dozen, suited for menial labor up to systems administration, coordination, and ground warfare.

You have $250,000. Spend it wisely.
It should be noted by anyone who's read this that there is relatively little detail in goods here, and less in prices. Simply request information on anything you think we'll need, and the specifications and cost will be provided.
Some guidelines: The cheapest rifles cost less than $300 due to their inferior technology and even more inferior reliability, while a modern infantry plasma gun might cost upwards of $20,000. The cheapest four-man transport vehicle with no bells, whistles, or pressurized cabin will only be a few thousand dollars, while a tank would be pushing ten million. Androids or servitors suited for menial labor will only cost a thousand or two each, but a four-meter tall warbot won't be cheap.

Advice: Keep in mind food, water, ammunition, and fuel consumption. Water is pushing $6 a gallon these days, and military rations aren't far behind. Vehicles and generators are available using every fuel under the sun, with suitably varied practicality.

Most important of all, where the hell are we going? A simple vote on the type and population of habitable planet we should set out for is in order, and a suitably balanced choice will be found.

Don't pack diesel generators for an iceball, or tents for Mars. (Yes, Mars is a fully industrialized world at this point, that was merely an example)

Edit: All catalog stuff goes here.

General Discussion / Humans, and eventually a colony on Mars.
« on: December 21, 2012, 12:51:26 am »
Why not? We've had the tech for decades now, and contrary to certain beliefs, no orbital construction is required to send a manned team to Mars, nor is a Moon base, which would in fact be even harder to set up and sustain. If you haven read The Case for Mars, I highly suggest it.

There are those who consume energy drinks in moderation like myself, those who are convinced it is as bad as cocaine, and those who think consuming 8 of them in a night is a good idea. Where do you stand on this subject?

Forum Games and Roleplaying / To Be a Daemon. On Mars?
« on: November 19, 2012, 03:00:51 am »
Hello and welcome to my first forum game. This will take a suggestion game format, so there will be one character guided by your input. Anyway, on with it.

Emptiness. Darkness. Hunger. You are a manifestation of the worst mankind has to offer. Anger, hate, fear, jealousy, hunger for power.... You are all of these, and more. Your true form is incomprehensible to man, a mere glimpse having horrific consequences. So they defend themselves, unconsciously of course. Their minds conjure replacements, shrouds to hide your true nature from their mortal eyes. What do you look like to a being of mere flesh and bone?

You sense little around you, save for the telltale scent of evil seeping into the thin air from your very presence. But wait, this is no earth, there is precious little life here. A flash of color startles you, disappearing as quickly as it came. Red dust and rock as far as the eye can see. Unnatural domes rising many stories into the dim sky. Where are you?

An isolated colony, consisting of a single main dome and a number of smaller, connected domes and buildings home to some two hundred souls. The deep mine shafts supply tons of hematite to a larger colony eight hours' drive away, but they wouldn't be missed soon. Equipment malfunctions are common out here, and attacks from other, less fortunate colonies are not unheard of.

A larger colony, maybe even deserving the name of a town. It is fully self-sufficient with six large domes and a scattering of manufactories, hydroponic units, a sensor and communications array, a small spaceport capable of accepting smaller craft, a considerable garage for ground vehicles, and a small but well-staffed military outpost. This colony is home to over one thousand souls with a platoon of thirty hardened RNA Infantry garrisoning the outpost.

Appearance: Ethereal flames, shadow, humanoid, whatever...?

Location: Mining Colony/Town

But you are a creation of hatred, violence, and chaos, why do you care about this silliness? Why indeed. Because power, more often than not, requires finesse. Being a cosmic abomination, this is not your strong suit, but you realize its importance and strive to improve your skill at not killing everything and painting the walls with blood, right?

Any questions on just about anything related to the game will be answered in some form, and I will be awake for approximately three hours following this post. Constructive criticism is welcomed. Railroading will be minimal as long as trolling is as well.

http://rolz.org will be used for rolls unless/until a better site is suggested.
