DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dwarf Fortress featured in PC Gamer, sorta

This month's issue of PC Gamer (the one with Duke Nukem Forever as the cover story) has a half page article on Dwarf Fortress, featuring bits and pieces of Tim Denee's illustrated story of Oilfurnace. Thought it was cool and bay12 should know. :)

DF Gameplay Questions / Loading saves with different graphics

So I'm trying to do a succession game with some friends of mine, but they're all using different graphics mods, mainly the three included in the lazy newb pack, and I use vanilla DF graphics (I started the fort). They've told me that some of the tiles are displaying wrong, and I've seen the same as well on my end when using their saves. Is there any way around this?

DF Gameplay Questions / Limited critter population?

So I finally tried an in-caverns fort, and embarked with a swordsdwarf and armorer/weaponsmith in lieu of a second mason and miner. I got lucky and in my first migrant wave got a speardwarf, too. Before long both were fully outfitted in steel, and nothing was particularly challenging, but having marauding caverns creatures is better than not having any, and after a while they just stopped coming. I'm going on half a year now with not a single visitor from the deeps. Interestingly, I also haven't seen a forgotten beast yet after four years. Anyone know what's up with that?

DF Gameplay Questions / Masterworks

For some reason my weaponsmith refuses to make any kind of masterworks. Since he went secretive and became legendary I've wasted around 50 steel bars on making spears and swords and still have yet to see one. Anyone know what's up with that? Or does RNG just hate me?

DF Gameplay Questions / Loading .13 saves in .12?

The title pretty much says it all. I reverted to 0.31.12 after I read about .13's migration problems, and now a save I briefly used in 0.31.13 (but created in .12) won't load in .12, which is a huge bummer for me since it was a succession fort with some friends of mine. Is there anything I can do to get it to work in .12?

DF Gameplay Questions / Individual Combat Training

Most of the military bugs are now squashed, so no more crazy workarounds to getting a decent military. Another change I also noticed was that individual combat training is now for some reason getting my military nowhere. All of my soldiers in all of my fortresses in 0.31.12 are completely inept, and despite training for years never get past dabbling in any combat skills. If I give them group training orders it's equally useless - it takes even longer for the training to start than a simple stroll to the barracks, and it almost never focuses on a weapon-specific skill. Since attributes are apparently gone in DF2010 I can't just draft legendary civilians who are superdwarvenly strong as a result of their skills, so I'm really at a loss as to how I'm supposed to get a decent military going, aside from maybe embarking with a skilled soldier...

On a side note, is there a dwarf mode combat log type thing? I've heard it mentioned several times but never seen it. I'd love to read about each individual blow being dealt, that way I can say things like "my legendary speardwarf killed this giant quadruped made out of coral by skewering its brain"... and not be making up the added details.

So I read the stupid dwarf tricks page on magmawiki, but other than that one thread linked there I couldn't find anyone who actually did this. The maximum range I observed was 6 tiles out, but it puts so much lava out so fast that the seemingly small range doesn't matter. Almost immediately (maybe 10 seconds after this screenshot), I had a guesstimated 20x50 space covered with lava. Also, notably, it's directly above the entrance to my fortress and under the pumps that pressurize it there's an airlock area filled with chained animals for thief detection as well as a bunch of cage traps.

If you want to see it in action, here's the save. Sorry about the size but this is in a huge world. There's already a command to pull the firing lever. The adjacent lever cuts it off from its source, the nearby volcano. If not for the foresight of adding those floodgates, I wouldn't have been able to actually make it work. :D It was nothing but a fancy lava-drip tube until I drained it and added the wall that seals off the space in between the pumps, so that the pressurized magma can't go anywhere but out.

I found a thread from march detailing someone's idea for defending their fortress with carp, and decided to try it. I embarked to a temperate desert with a river after adding the [PET] tag to longnose gar, sturgeon, and carp. Lo and behold, the river
is home to a trio of sturgeon and a longnose gar. I laid out my plan to make a large area adjacent to the river that I can drain and fill at will using some pumps and a huge wall of floodgates, which would be right in front of a huge wall of traps. It all started to come together, but I had a growing concern about the fish. By the time half my floodgate wall was complete, the sturgeon and longnose gar had left the map, and no more have entered (to my knowledge - I was checking every 5 minutes or so via the unit list) in the half year or so since they left. Meanwhile, several packs of vultures and camels have migrated through...

Anyone know if there's some known bug that would prevent new fish from coming through?

DF Gameplay Questions / Soldiers aren't sparring

The title pretty much says it all. There's a designated barracks, off-duty soldiers, and they're not doing anything. One group is standing by my magma pipe and another by the mayor's place. These aren't even where they are stationed. They were sparring before, but they just stopped a while back. The only ones that are sparring are the two newest recruits, which lead me to try dismissing and then re-activating the others, but to no avail. I also tried making the sparring dwarves the group leaders, but the other soldiers kept loafing around, albeit in the barracks now. Any idea what's wrong?

DF Gameplay Questions / Question about how sieges work

This is my 3rd successful fortress. I have a good sized military, mostly well-trained from eons of sparring and target practice. My fortress' population is 140, I'm quite a few years in, and I have yet to be victim to a single thief, ambush, or siege. I also noticed that my civilization is the only one listed when I press C... So, do I have to be near goblin civilization to fall under a siege?
