DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Getting back into DF
« on: June 15, 2015, 04:40:50 pm »
Hey all, been away for a while.  Haven't played since just before minecarts were introduced.  I think I can give it another go and am getting caught up on developments.

How is the stability and performance of 40.24 versus 34.XX?  I like building elaborate forts that are more likely to die from FPS doom than invaders.  Should I go with the newest hotness or stick with tried and true?

As for getting up to speed again, are there any canonical science threads to crop up over the last few years I should bookmark or utilities I shouldn't miss?

DF Gameplay Questions / Military Best Practice (0.34.11)
« on: July 04, 2014, 08:40:28 pm »
Howdy, all.  It's been, like, forever since I've fired up a real fort and built a legit military.  My question is this: what are current military design / training / equipping best practices?

I don't intend to use any exploits, so danger rooms and the like are out.

What size and kind of fighters do you use?  Do you prefer ranged, blunt trauma, sharp, or a mix in your squads?

Do you have a method for effectively training your noobs, or do you cherry pick migrants with existing skills?  Do you find that student / teacher or other misc. skills are worth paying attention to?

As for equipping, do you stick with a consistent uniform?  Do you try layering 37 cloaks on or do you find a more realistic outfit does the trick?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / How to Lure Zombies
« on: January 17, 2013, 03:06:10 pm »
So, I'm working on a succession fortress right now.  The dwarfs are all locked up and there are 372 undead roaming the hills outside our walls.  I need to clear them out and make it safe for new migrants and traders.

It's a tower-themed fortress, so I'm planning to lure all of the zombies into a very tall dodge trap, "kill" them with a fall, and then smarsh them out of existence.  I don't have a lot of experience working with undead, so I'm hoping for your thoughts on a few things:
  • How do I aggro zombies?  Is there a way to lure each zombie on the map into my contraption, or do I have to get bait within a certain distance and aggro them all individually?
  • How effective are dodge traps on zombies?  Do zombies dodge?  Are zombie kobolds still trapimmune?  Are larger zombies more or less likely to "die" from large falls?
  • Once the zombies are clear, is there a reliable way to trap any necromancers around?  Is there any bait they like?  I'd prefer to keep them out of my dodge trap and capture them alive.  I have three trapped and would like to add to my collection.
  • Do you have any other tips for sterilization?
Thanks in advance for the help!  For the curious, this has to do with the (hopeful) redemption of Skyscrapes II.

General Discussion / Graphene and (wedding) rings.
« on: July 19, 2012, 01:21:07 pm »
Ok Bay12, I have a challenge for you.  I suspect there may be a few materials science geeks knocking around here.

I'm getting married in about 7 weeks, and I'm giving thought to wedding rings.

I'd like to do something super geeky.  There are many awesome materials out there, but I can't think up anything more interesting (or scientifically significant) than graphene.  Let's face it.  Graphene is freaking amazing, and in any event is much more compelling a substance than gold to signify an everlasting bond.

Now, ideally I'd be able to acquire a ring made out of graphene; full stop.  Unfortunately, current fabrication technology for making a pure graphene ring is either not up to snuff or (I suspect) research-science-scale expensive.

And so my question: assuming I had a skilled jeweler willing to help, is there any realistic way to incorporate graphene, as produced with current technology, into a wedding ring?  I've been able to find graphene powder available for sale online, but I'm stumped as to how I could use it.

Any ideas?  Any other forms of graphine available that I'm overlooking?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

DF Community Games & Stories / The Chronicle of Cryptmatches
« on: July 08, 2012, 02:21:15 pm »
Hello there!

When not playing succession fortresses, I tend to embark with grand plans, only to lose touch with my increasingly complex games as life intercedes and distracts me for weeks or months at a time.

In an effort to keep myself accountable (and to memorialize the fort for myself), I will be posting here with updates as frequently as life will allow.  I'll detail the ongoing projects and provide a bit of narrative as we go.

If you're reading along and have suggestions for how the fort should develop please share them!  I'm also happy to dorf those who wish as the opportunity arises.

With that out of the way, onward to the embark!

It's been a while since I've played around with lots of ice, so when this embark popped up on my finder I figured I'd go for it.
Spoiler: Embark (click to show/hide)

With a frozen river and an aquifer, I've decided to use ice as my primary above-ground construction material.  This will be slow going, as you can't cut ice boulders into blocks.  I'm going to play it as realistically as possible: no ice walls allowed in tiles adjacent to magma; in order to address my above-ground magma needs I'll have to use the stone underneath the aquifer.

We've got 100 levels of sky available, so I'm starting to think epic ice tower.  Clearly I'll have to engineer some type of ice generator.  That shouldn't be a problem with the abundance of water-producing tiles, but should prove satisfyingly complicated and dangerous.

Sand is available, so I expect glass will play a large role in magma management.

Not sure what metals/layer stone we have yet.  Hoping for iron ore, but I may have to rely on imported goblin armor/weapons as my primary iron resource.

It looks like it's time to start.  Welcome to Cryptmatches; strike the earth!

So, in general I have mixed feelings about the new construction behavior in 34.11, but there's one bug that's driving me absolutely crazy: when a dwarf cancels building a wall because they are standing in the construction site.

Does anyone know of a good work-around?  I know I can assign dwarfs to single-tile burrows, but I'm working on an above-ground fortress right now, and I'd have to designate thousands of these burrows to keep things moving along...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / So many soap blocks...
« on: June 07, 2012, 06:44:57 pm »
So, usually I don't bother making soap, but this time around I decided to help my little dudes keep clean.  But now whenever I build walls/floors (and believe me, I'm building a lot) I have to search through pages of giant olm soap, blue peafowl soap, alligator soap, bugbat soap, etc, etc

Is there any way to disable building constructions from soap?

General Discussion / Same old question, dog, just a different day
« on: May 29, 2012, 09:51:03 pm »
Ok.  It's been asked before.  It's been asked before on these forums.  But I am feeling inquisitive, so I will ask Bay12 for its opinions again:

Is the existence of god (in the way you choose that to mean) an antimony?  That is to say, do you believe that either the existence or non-existence of god is more rational than the alternative?  If so, why?  If not, upon what do you base your belief or non-belief in the existence of god?

Rules:
  • Be nice.  I'm serious.  Actually be nice, particularly to those who disagree or might disagree with your position.
  • Support your opinions.  Acknowledge unsupported opinions.
  • Don't condemn others' opinions.  Acknowledging inconsistencies is great, but don't demean anyone's beliefs.
  • Be clear.  Keep arguments short.  Let your sentences be unencumberd by superfluities.
  • Be nice :)

I'll start.

I don't believe that science or rational thought can or will prove the existence or non-existence of god.  I vacilate between agnosticism and atheism.  When feeling particularly atheistic I find myself thinking of this question Nietzsche posed: "If there were gods, how could I endure not to be a god?"  When feeling agnostic I don't know what to think, and solicit opinions on the matter from the internet.

Your turn.

General Discussion / Favorite Flavor of Linux?
« on: August 01, 2011, 06:53:02 pm »
I just inherited an old box that I'd like to install Linux on.  I don't have any grandiose plans; I expect to use it for word processing, internet surfing, casual gaming, and as a music server.  The last time I messed around with Linux was in 2001 with Mandrake (before it changed to Mandriva).  I know a little bit about the OS, but I am not an expert by any stretch.

Do you have any distro recommendations?  The hardware is about 8 years old, so I think the new Ubuntu distros may be too taxing on the graphics.  I'd also like something with a relatively intuitive interface because I'm hoping to sell my GF on it.  I'm open to obscure and fun distros as long as they're usable, so hit me with what you got!

I'm messing around with capturing and killing FBs.  I noticed that FBs seemed to take longer destroying metal doors than stone ones, but I'm not sure if that's what was actually going on or if it just seemed that way.

Does anyone have experience on whether door material matters for how long it takes building destroyers to knock down a door?  Is it something like "metal > stone" or something more complex like "Steel > Iron > Copper > Gold > Stone > Wood"?  I can try to do some science on it in a bit, but now I've got a struggling fort and only access to gold, copper, and tin.

DF General Discussion / Little DF Shoutout
« on: June 13, 2011, 11:08:07 am »
So, in between cruel sessions of dwarficide I sometimes feed my addiction with flash games.  I just fired up Elements of Arkandia on Kongregate and saw my default character name was Urist McMage.  Chuckling to myself I went on to have some fun playing the game, which is very similar to Puzzle Quest with its Bejeweled mechanic.

Then I got this necklace and realized I just had to share:

Always glad to see DF get little props like this.

They're real.  And they have titanium teeth.  Wouldn't want to hit a ball into one of these guy's yards.

DF Gameplay Questions / Can't Make Steel
« on: April 27, 2011, 05:08:05 pm »
Ok, so I must be overlooking something really basic, but I can't tell what it is.  I can't make pig iron or steel at my mama forges even though I've got plenty of supplies: 129 iron bars, 8 pig iron bars, 18 coke, 45 charcoal, and over 99 marble all accessible and unforbidden.

What am I missing here?
