DF Gameplay Questions / Neighbours pathing
« on: April 04, 2016, 06:21:59 am »
So, I couldn't find army travels information over at wiki or anything coherent here on forums.

And I have a question, refer to the screenshot:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

So, the island on the left has elves. The mainland on the right has the rest, but no elves. I am planning to embark on this spot to get more "neighbors".

So if I embark on this spot, will I get sieges from all of them, coming from their sides of map or just any map edge?
If I connect the two sides with a bridge will they be able to cross and mess each other up, without pathing through my location?
If I embark on one side, but not make a path to other, will enemies from the other sides even attack, as there is no world-map pathing?
What else could possible go wrong?

DF General Discussion / CPUCores - hopefully more FPS
« on: March 22, 2016, 06:50:16 am »
Basically, this
http://store.steampowered.com/app/384300/

Quote
For single-threaded games: Before the application may have had 70-90% access to a CPU processor, it now has near 100% access to a processor. This enables your game to take full advantage of your CPU core, thus enabling it to reach it's highest FPS potential on your system. The net benefit can be up to 30% more CPU power for that game!

I wonder if this can work for DF (probably possible through adding DF to Steam as non-Steam game) and what sort of performance increase there would be. Can someone perhaps test it?
(I am not promoting it, just curious if it will be worth the price)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Tonight we dine in hell, years later [spoilers]
« on: February 28, 2016, 05:30:28 pm »
Five years later, it's that time again. It did not go well the previous time.
It did not go well this time too, but at least now I know embarking in hell is still possible in 0.42.05.

So, before committing to finally completing the "dig-outta-hell" challenge and while waiting for DFHack for 0.42.06, I need to ask a few questions/suggestions:

1. What's the MAXIMUM number of dwarves you can bring at embark (before game starts crashing)? I think it was 225 or 255 or something similar. I will need everyone I can get.

2. I expect to be attacked soon and attacked in mass. What's the best weapons to fight off / hold off the clown wave till I finish the Project Trump wall to keep the clowns out, considering my combat dorfs will be low skilled? Hundreds of crossbows? Mass axes and shields? Mix these?

3. Even if my squads can live through initial attack, constant harassing will mean that I would need to wall myself off. Since the slade floor is all I expect to have to work with to sustain myself long enough to make it out, farming is out of question, no water either. Any way to get a renewable food&drink source at embark, that does not need soil or grass?

4. Is digging up into slade still possible? I doubt that I will have an easy access to tubes (unless I get really lucky), so I guess I will have to try to tunnel up through slade (that is normally un-minable). Anyone can explain how to do that properly? Wiki is really obscure on topic.

5. What else should I bring along that might be useful in circus? I assume medical supplies might save a few lives, as well as spare cloth for clothing, should I be forced to stay in hell for a long time. Magma-safe stone might come in handy later, I guess. Any more suggestions?

Masterwork DF / Decoration "workshops" for .42
« on: February 26, 2016, 03:45:53 am »
I want to copy the "decorations" custom workshops and display cases from this mod into a mini-mod for personal use to get it working on latest version (and with no extra masterwork crap).
So, has anything changed regarding custom workshops between .34 and .42 and needs to be updated? Any dependences of those workshops on other masterwork raw files? Or they can just be copy pasted into vanilla?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Old Camp style Fortress
« on: November 09, 2011, 06:36:51 pm »

Urist McDiamond withdraws from the society...

So over few last days, after another 230+ fortress was fed to loyalty cascade due to being boring, I had nothing much to do in my free time. So I reinstalled some old favorite games as I always do when bored, in this case it was Gothic 1.
So while wandering around Old Camp this idea struck me. These wooden hovels with flat roofs, that nice asymmetrical remains of a castle with a tower, few levels of the living area, combat arena, that wooden wall with fortifications... I just saw every piece of architecture in DF 2d-style. Well, I felt like I just have to do this.

So my question is: how do I go about doing this? Ofc other then switching to humans for authenticity, and making it large enough to be as detailed as possible? And probably settling it with peasants and guards with names from gothic series?

I even found a nice map for reference whenever I'll start doing this:

So, any ideas and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
