Forum Games and Roleplaying / IGYNPADCA RPG 2nd Edition
« on: October 18, 2020, 06:43:47 pm »
Who here has played IGYNPADCA or its single-player spin-off? Or maybe you played the MOBA version? And also there was a remastered version of the original that had a few changes.

Anyway, some years back they made a tabletop rpg for it that I previously ran, and recently they released a 2nd edition of that, which we'll be playing.

So what I'll need from you is to follow the character creation rules in the book and tell me your character's name, any classes or races they may have, their primary weapon (or other item if they don't use weapons), their most relevant skills and/or abilities, and any other character info that seems relevant. I'll allow up to 7 players at a time.

Character Template for convenience:

Name:
Class(es):
Race(s):
Primary Weapon or Item:
Skills:
Abilities:
Anything Else:

So I'll ask that each player has no more than 2 or 3 permanent followers at a time. You know, things like: henchmen, familiars, animal companions, manimal companions, hirelings, mercenaries, guards, squires, apprentices, minstrels, backup singers, attorneys, accountants, etc. Note that this limit doesn't apply to swarms, herds, flocks, parliments, etc. of low intelligence creatures, so classes like Shepherds, Swineherds, and Dustherds are still fine. Also, any Petmancer-type classes are good, as long as they can't control more than three creatures at a time. And any hivemind followers are okay as long as the hivemind doesn't collectively have more power than a single creature. Also note that the swarm exception also allows for entourages, yes-men, admiring fans, and other possibly intelligent-seeming but mostly useless hangers-on.

Also, let me know where you think we should start out. Last time I had everyone begin in Lesser Dirtstick, but you can suggest another starting location if you want.

Hey. So my party and I were exploring the Crypt of the Forgotten Oracle when I found this scroll. Apparently you can write messages on it and also see messages that people with similar scrolls have written, so I thought I'd try it out. Our party wizard said it's a waste of time, that you just get mostly idiots responding to these things, but frankly I think he's just a jerk.

So, anyway, what's going on with you, fellow scroll user(s)?

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Igynpadca Single-Player Game
« on: September 24, 2015, 06:33:39 pm »
Hey, guys! I'm sorry I haven't been as active in the Igynpadca thread as I have in the past, but I haven't really been playing the game much. My life has gotten a lot more busy lately, so I don't really have time for MMOs.

But I hear Generic Game Company has started a spin-off single-player version. Has anyone heard anything about it?

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Line-by-Line Story
« on: May 21, 2015, 07:54:31 pm »
Inspired by this thread, I decided to make a thread about making a story where everyone contributes one line at a time (usually about a sentence, but you can write more if needed to convey a thought if absolutely necessary). I'll start:

Once there lived a boy in a lonely house on a hill.

An interesting discussion, but I think Lord Dragonsoul is a bit quick to dismiss staves completely. Sure, a staff can't match a wand for sheer precision, and there is the unfortunate situation of some unscrupulous implement salesmen selling novice mages flashy-but-mostly useless staves, but I think we can all agree that a properly-built staff is hard to beat for pure power.

That said, like Aidin Langford in the comments, I myself am more partial to a Magelock Pistol and Runic Bullets, since it approaches the power of a staff, and you don't need to worry about precision since you already handled that when you made the Runic Bullets (unless you're one of those "wizards" who just goes out and buys their bullets). Also, it has the added advantage of working in dead-magic zones.

Also, since the linked episode was on fashion, and it was oddly enough not brought up, I was wondering if I could people's opinion on robes.

General Discussion / Official Proposal for New Tabletop Games Sub-Board
« on: November 07, 2014, 03:55:21 am »
This is something I've thought about a lot, and brought up a couple of times in other threads.

Now, near as I can tell, a lot of us seem to like D&D, Warhammer, board games, etc., and we like talking about such things. But there really isn't any sort of definitive place for such discussion. FG&RP is does deal a lot with such things, but it's more about playing games than talking about them. Other Games ostensibly covers such things, but when you're in the mood to talk about RPG's, you're talking about two completely different things as far as video/tabletop games are concerned, and discussions about the former usually crowd out the latter. You might even be tempted to take your discussion to General Discussion, but GD is all full of politics and emotion threads, and considering that there are other places you might possibly put it, but can't, at this point you've probably just given up out of confusion, and decided to forget the whole thing.

So my proposal, in brief, is that we petition Toady to set up a dedicated sub-board for discussion of tabletop games.

Now, where exactly it would be located is up for discussion. It could potentially be in either Other Games or Forum Games and Roleplaying. I think I'm personally leaning towards the former, since it's more about discussion than the latter, but that's why we talk about things. And there are probably other things we need to talk about that I'm not thinking of right now. If so, let me know.

Relevant Lindybeige rant. I'm just slightly curious. And maybe a bit insomniac.

The year is 2023. Nine years ago, in 2014, ninety-five percent of the world's population was incinerated by nuclear war in the course of an hour. Now humanity struggles on, trying to make a living in scattered communities in a world blighted by radiation.

Many of the communities are both protected and oppressed by the World Defense Initiative, also know simply as the Power, made up of the remnants of the US, UK, Japanese and Russian governments, some of which were at war with each other in 2014, and the organization itself was created in 2008, but, okay, whatever. They are opposed by the Brotherhood of Freedom, otherwise known as the Raiders, who are about thrice the size of the Power and want to replace the power since they're the ones who fucked up in the first place. But the Raiders can't do this since they have no good leadership and their dudes are poorly trained, so they're at a stalemate. Oh, and also Japan made some some sort of nuclear-powered war-bots before the war called the Xavior series that are now operating out of control. So that's a thing.

Although none of this will probably matter to you, since you'll just be trying to survive in a world where the sun blocked out by clouds of fallout. If you don't don't die from starvation or radiation induced sickness, maybe you could do something about all that stuff in the paragraph above. Or you could accomplish great deeds and be known as a Legendary Character. Or you could try to leave the sodding wasteland and head for South America or Africa, or possible Australia or Antarctica, as these are said and rumored, respectively, to be places least affected or even unaffected by the radiation.

But before any of that happens, you have to live through character creation.

Other Games / Any Good Character Collector Games?
« on: July 07, 2014, 07:28:10 pm »
I was wondering if anyone could recommend any games where you can unlock characters with different abilities through play. More specifically, I'm looking for an action game where I can swap between different characters in play, and, if possible, I'd like it if different character's special abilities were needed to get past obstacles.

[rant]This desire stems from me really liking Lego Star Wars and the first Lego Batman game, but not as much the games that followed, mostly due to the fact that they expanded the hub so much in later games and moved most of the collectibles there, so that it feels less like a fun challenge getting them and more like a lot of pointless errands. And then there's way you can be suddenly sucked into a new level by stepping past some invisible barrier, rather than deliberately deciding that, yes, I would like to start this new level; how they reuse abilities a lot from previous games so that you'll often come across some element and think "Oh, I'll need to collect a character with bombs to get past this"; the characters now speak English (or whatever language you're playing it in) as opposed to the adorable Legolish and miming of before (not a humongous complaint, but still a change I didn't personally like)[/rant]

Roll To Dodge / Minimally IGYNPADCA RTD
« on: July 02, 2014, 11:18:04 pm »
Hey, so I decided to make a minimalist rtd out of the game IGYNPADCA (link to our thread on the forum for those unfamiliar).

The basic idea for this game is that you'll present me with your character sheets (starting characters only), I'll pick at most 6-8 (either the ones I like the most or just at random) and you'll all spawn at the same starting area (you can request your favorites; otherwise I'll pick one). From there, the rules are just like a normal minimalist rtd, only you can't do anything you couldn't logically do in the game in your current situation.

And from upthread (or is it downthread?):
Oh, guys, I just want to mention off the bat that I don't plan to do anything with spaceships in this game. For one thing, we're too low level for it, and for another the spaceship rules are pretty complex. Also, I don't really like how they seem to cause everything to devolve into nothing but destroying or altering cosmic masses and fighting endless wars with overpowered armies and weaponry. I understand a lot of people like it, but it's never been my cup of tea, so there won't be player-controlled spaceships in this game.

Also, I don't really want to deal with eight different people doing their own thing in a multiplayer game, so please try to meet up with at least one other player before you go off into the wilderness or some dungeon.

And there's nothing more to it. Not a thing more.

Life Advice / How to Dating?
« on: May 10, 2014, 02:14:36 pm »
Somewhat relevant posts from the sad thread:
This reminded me that it's been a while since I've had a proper crush on anybody. There's one girl at work who seems like she might be interesting, but I don't even know, man.
Take her out on a date or two. Then you'll know. You might want to run away screaming but hey, if that happens you won't have wasted a crush on her.
I think I might be misunderstanding you, but what I'm saying is I'm not actually even crushing on her. I think I'm just mostly feeling lonely lately, and I think she might be nerdy in some way (I'm mostly just going by looks with this, since I've barely talked to her at all), so it might just be a case me just going, "eh, good enough."

Plus there's the fact that I've never actually asked anyone out before.
Since I've never really asked anyone out before I don't really know how to do it. Also, are there any special considerations for asking out someone at work? (I work in retail, if it matters.)

General Discussion / Any Recommendations for a Good Middle-Quality Mic Set?
« on: September 17, 2013, 09:05:54 pm »
I didn't get much help from my thread in the Life Advice section, so I'll ask here: can anyone recommend a good headphone and mic set that's not too expensive but not a cheap piece of crap either?

Life Advice / Can anyone recommend any good headphone and mic sets?
« on: September 16, 2013, 06:06:10 pm »
My mom is shopping for Christmas stuff and doesn't know what to get me, so she just asked me what I would like. I said I'd like a headphone and mic set, but I don't personally know what's good or not. Can anyone recommend anything? Nothing too expensive, but I don't want cheap crap that will just break after a few months.

Party Quest (or I Am Forever Bad at Naming Things)

In this game you will play a group of adventurers who’ve banded together to follow their dreams. Each of you possesses a certain skillset or some other valuable assets, but that alone is not enough to reach your goal. You’ll need the help of your fellow party members to help face the challenges on your way to ultimate victory.

This is intended to be a game of cooperation and camaraderie. If you are the kind of person who just likes to go off and do their own thing, please don’t apply for this game, it’s not meant for you.
That’s not to say that you can’t split up or occasionally go off and do your own thing, but the idea is that each of you is a part of the group and needs each other in some respect. If that ever becomes no longer the case, your character can go off to do their own thing and you can make a new character for whom that is the case.

I’ll take 4-6 players (the intention is for the group to be small so that everyone has a chance to get know everyone else better). Use the following template for your character sheets:

Quote from: Character Template
Your Name: What name are you known as by your fellow adventurers?
Ultimate Goal: What do you ultimately seek to accomplish through adventuring? You can include pertinent backstory here, though backstory isn’t strictly necessary; I just need to know what you’re after and possibly why. This shouldn’t be some trivial thing; it should be something you’ll be trying to acquire throughout the whole game.
Why you’re with the party: How does the party help you reach your goal? What ties you to the party: do their goals align well with yours; do they have something you can’t find anywhere; or do you have a special connection with one or more of the party members? Why don’t you just go off and do your own thing?
What you bring to the party: As it says, what makes the party want to keep you in it’s employ? It isn’t necessarily special skills, you might have funds or access to some special contacts that make you valuable, or secret knowledge or something else I haven’t thought of.
Your Problem: What in your character’s life causes them or gets them into the most trouble? This should be neither a trivial bother nor a major handicap, just something they struggle with often but are not overcome by. It should be something that adds interest to the character and to the game and makes your character more 3-dimensional.

I don't expect your character sheet to be completely done in one go; the "Why you're with the party section" especially will require collaboration with other players, but it will be nice to have at least a general idea of what your character is like to start with.

To begin with, the world will, by design, start out as a vague and undefined fantasy world, to be fleshed out by player goals and skills/assets and any other parts of the character sheet that might apply. Players can also suggest any other details they'd like to see in the gameworld, as well as adding details in play, subject to veto by other players. I'll also add details of my own as we go along.

Since I'm not really good at coming up with systems, and the open-ended nature of the thing making trying to create concrete rules for the thing tricky anyway, we're going to do this freeform style. Not that I'm opposed to any sort of system, and, if we can devise one that would fit the game, I'd be all for it and integrate it as soon as possible, but for now this is what we've got.

Now, this shouldn't run into the problems of most such games, since there is a limited number of players; as GM I reserve the right to do whatever is necessary, including kicking disruptive players, to preserve the integrity of the game; and I vest in players the right to vote anything they deem entirely too stupid to be retroactively non-canon. Also, I shall play any NPCs as needed.
