For fun, I just wrote a book about management.

Would anyone be interested in reading it?

Here is the intro:

People are dumb. Really, Really dumb. They are shockingly dumb. I’m talking about a neutron star composed entirely out of hammers level stupidity. Most humans consider television to be educational, and believe random things that they find on the internet. Some even believe things that politicians say. The average human being cannot count to 1. Many don’t even know what the word count means. Some can’t even remember that they are human.
You might think that I am being a bit hyperbolic here, but I am not. The average human being makes any given amoeba look like Einstein. For every neuron that fires in the average person’s brain, one person has been hit in both eyes by a meteorite at the same time.
Humans are dumb. This is an important point to understand if you want to make any sense of the rest of this book, so at the risk of repeating myself too much I have to say again that humans are dumb.
That being said, for the safety of everyone on the earth you need to take charge. If you made it this far in this book then that means that you can read (or that someone made a audio version of this book, which is pretty hard to imagine). If you can read, then you are in the top 0.001% of people on the earth in regards to intelligence.
If you do not take charge, nuclear war might break out at any moment, people could quit getting their immunizations and we could be wiped out by polio, or they could just decide that breathing carbon monoxide is a good weight loss drug. The right thing to do is obviously to convince everyone around you to do exactly what you want them to do. The only way to do this is to be a manager.
If you are already a manager, then you need this book to make yourself a better manager. If you are not yet a manager, then for the good of the human race, become a manager!

Creative Projects / A blog explaining jokes

I have a weird sense of humor, and so to be funny I used to explain jokes to my co-workers at work.

I know that this kills the humor of a joke - that was what was funny to me.

One day one of them said "You should write down your explanations, because they would be useful to non-native English speakers"

That got me started blogging about jokes.

Now, I have over 100 jokes analyzed, and I am pretty sure that I will be able to keep blogging about jokes for as long as I can find a ready source of jokes.

If you want to help me kill more jokes (by explaining them), please post them here. If they are not offensive (my blog is family friendly, and my 6 year old reads it some times) I will explain why they are funny in future posts.

Creative Projects / Help me edit my board game rules documents

Hey folks,

I am trying to prepare some rules documents to submit them to a board game design competition. I know that I am not the best person on the internet when it comes to fixing up a document to be easy to understand, so I was wondering if anyone would be willing to help me out.

I am working on 3 games right now, all of which you can find on Google Docs.
Terran League of Defense Robots: A cooperative game where the players build giant robots to try and fight off an alien invasion.
The Age of Vikings: A game where players take command of a clan of vikings and pillage/proselyte on the high seas.
The Dragons' Game: A game where you try to talk a bunch of dragons out of eating you and get the most loot from them too.

If anyone wants to look at the rules docs I would really appreciate it!

Also, if you have any questions, ask them here, or inline. I will include notes in the rules docs thanking anyone that wants to be thanked if they help out.

Creative Projects / Preparing a game for submission to a contest

I am trying to get a rules document cleaned up so that I can submit it to the Ion Award to be judged and possibly published.

I am worried that it is too confusing. Would anyone like to look it over and help me make it make more sense?

Creative Projects / [WIP] Dancing Robots artwork

I have been working on a card game called Dancing Robots for a while. I have gotten help on this forum in the past about balancing and playtesting it.

Now I run into art issues.
Here is a sample of what I have so far:

I paid my brother in law to make the actual art for all the parts cards (the stuff in the middle of the image) and I composed the card itself (the words, background, shadow, and icons).

It looks decent to me (if anyone has any helpful pointers I would happily listen to them), but I am now starting to make the dance move cards. They are a little harder to make because each card is different (therefore there are way more of them). I feel like to fit everything in I need to have no art work in the center (which is fine because I have only paid Dave for the artwork for the parts anyway), but I don't like how they are laid out. Here are some examples of things I have been fooling around with:



Parts of cards for reference:
the top box is the title
the second box is the move types
the third box is the rules
the symbol at the bottom is the awesomeness(score) of the move

These cards show all of the broad categories of moves in the game, so I am sure that if the layout that I chose can accommodate all of these cards it can accommodate all of the dance moves in the game.

If anyone is interested in coming up with ideas of how to better arrange the cards so that everything fits on, but it doesn't look so uneven I would love to hear them.

Also, if a card doesn't have rules, do you think that I should still put the rule box on it?

Creative Projects / Let's play some Dancing Robots (an online card game)

I have been making a card game called Dancing Robots since November. It takes about 30 minutes to play, and involves building robots and having them dance against each other. Players take turns drafting cards for their robots, and when someone is ready they call a dance off.

The game is supposed to be fairly light hearted, but it does involve strategy.

Since I am a software engineer I also put together a quick website where people can play the game against each other or a rudimentary AI.

Right now I am asking for some help to playtest the game. I am not looking for feedback about the visual aspects of the game or the website at the present time, just the balance of the game and the understandability of the rules document.

The rule portion of the attached document is 2.5 pages long, so it is not that hard a read (the cards and an example play are also on there for any PnPers as well as anyone who thought that an example play would be useful). Please read the rules before trying to play the game. The website does not teach people how to play, it just enables play (similar to isotropic dominion for those who used to play on that.)

If you have comments that are related to the usability of the website, or the card appearance/layout I would be happy to hear them, but keep in mind that I view both of those aspects of the game as ephemeral, so unless there is something horribly wrong it will probably take lower priority than rules changes or card balancing.

I was just adding a few quotes to my quote file and as I did, I decided to see how many quotes was in it.

I am now over 1500

I was wondering: How many people here have a quote file, and how do you organize it? I keep one version where I try to annotate everything (which is my master copy), and one version that is cleaned up for public consumption. The only uses I have discovered for it is to give me a 'everything is normal' google talk status message, and to pull a random quote to adorn the top of my website (sort of like a gnomic utterance at the top of a chapter of a fantasy book).

Since July of last year I have been working on designing a card game. It is a Polynesian themed game which tries to achieve a balance between being satisfyingly strategic and simple enough (and short enough) that my wife is willing to play.

I have play-tested it fairly extensively with people from my work and with my extended family, however I have always been present whenever new people were introduced to the game, and because of this the rules documents have not been read by very many people.

I am interested in having people help me read the rule documents to make sure that they make sense without me explaining them, and then play-test the game.

In order to make this game available to more than just print and play gamers, I have also made a Vassal module for it.

If anyone is interested in printing it up, I have full page pngs with 9 cards per page that can be printed on a color printer and cut out.

If anyone is interested in testing it out, please post here with your intentions (so that we can get some vassal games running online) I do not intend to participate in any games because my goal is to test whether the rules are well written (though if anyone does play a game, I would appreciate a vassal log file of the game so that I can see if anything is done wrong, and correct the rules to make them more obvious.)
