Play With Your Buddies / Let's Play Suikoden III ~ It begins for reals
« on: October 19, 2012, 10:35:38 am »

Suikoden? This title intrigues me!

As it should. The Suikoden saga was one of the top names in the Japanese RPG genre. Debuting on the Playstation in 1995, it was one of the earliest RPGs released on the console and was arguably the best until the release of Final Fantasy VII. With a cast of 108 recruitable characters and some genuinely interesting writing, it is fondly seen as a strong start to the series.

This was followed by Suikoden II, considered by many to be the pinnacle of the series. Set three years following the events of the original, it improved upon everything that the original did and is a benchmark of quality in the series and is considered to be one of the greatest RPGs of all time. It received two side stories in the Suikogaiden games which fleshed out the City State and Harmonia.

There was also Suikoden Card Stories, a TCG which received a release on the GBA which told the story of Suikoden II. I can't really say much about it because I've never played it and it didn't receive an english translation.
Then the series started to drop off a little.

Suikoden III was released in 2002 on the PS2 and was a pretty good game overall. The series had made the jump to 3D although not without some tradeoffs. The story is well crafted for the most part thanks to the trinity sight system, which allows you play three different storylines as well as a handful of side characters, but it falls apart in the fourth and fifth acts.
The battle system was updated (and not for the better although I'm not crying ruined forever like some fans out there. Suikoden 4 covered that problem easily) and dungeons developed a tendency to be corridors with miminal exploration.
The departure of the project developer Yoshitaka Murayama late in the project is also cited as something responsible for a decline in quality during the game.

I'll get into that when I need to. For now let's move on to Suikoden IV which nearly killed the series. Throwing away the series' already established interconnected storyline, the fourth in the series was set 150 years prior to the events of the original. This means that there were a handful of reoccurring characters, the setting was drastically different and the conflict felt on a smaller scale. This only scratches a few of the problems behind the game as its flaws means that it's an average RPG at best, and a terrible Suikoden title.

*The writing wasn't very interesting. There is nothing as well written as the Suikoden II plot, nothing as heartbreaking as the events of the original and the villains are barely noticeable in comparision to Harmonia in the third title.

* The character designs are pretty goddamn bland. I'll show you the figures of the main characters of the series up to IV and you tell me which is the lead of Suikoden IV.

* The gameplay sucks. That's the biggest problem for me as it is incredibly simple to fill a party with flatout broken characters since you have a party limit of four characters which had been cut down from the series standard of six. It also removed the row system so you didn't have range issues that you would have in the first two games if you flooded the party with short range swordsmen.
The game also takes the sailing of Wind Waker and somehow makes it more tedious by having a sky-high encounter rate and having only a handful of locations that you could travel to and these were often spaced out around the world map. Once you recruited Viki, there was no need to sail until the very end of the game.

*The Boss was confusing as fuck. You're barely told anything about what it could be and then BAM GODDAMN TREE FROM ANOTHER DIMENSION! It's actually about as strange as Necron from Final Fantasy IX. I can handle a strange boss if it's set up well but there's minimal explanation given to it.

It  really says something when the spin-off title Suikoden Tactics was far superior by fleshing out the Island Nations and the Kooluk empire. The setting problems still stands but most of the problems with the setting were fixed up although there were problems with the villain and final boss being rather underwhelming. It was also a much more difficult game the first time around albeit it became much easier when you transferred save data from Suikoden IV to it.

Suikoden V should have saved the series. It was well written except for it taking forever to kick into gear, the music was quite strong and the battle system was fresh and updated but still was similar to the more popular system from the earlier titles. Considered by most fans to be the second best in the series, it did this by retreading old ground from Suikoden II by borrowing some plot devices and characters while updating them a little such as Childerich being Luca Blight.

And yet that's the last entry in the main series. Suikoden Teirkreis was released in 2008 on the DS and is one of the better RPG offerings on the console but offers little to do with the main series outside of the name and recruiting 108 stars of destiny (now called Starbearers for some strange reason). Then there is Suikoden: Tsumugareshi Hyakunen no Toki which will never receive an engilsh release since it's a PSP game not made by ATLUS so I do not have an opinion on it outside of the fact that they decided to have another spin-off instead of continuing the main series.

Reign it in man. Let's get back to Suikoden III

Suikoden III had three main characters that you could play as with three overlapping storylines.

-Chris Lightfellow-

The first ever female lead in Suikoden history, Chris is the captain of the Knights of Zexen and a true badass. From a gameplay sense, she's a complete tank that can deal crazy amounts of damage thanks to her Falcon rune as well as having the ability to tank hits thanks to her heavy armour and high parry stat.

-Geddoe-

He's pretty awesome and has the most interesting background which I don't want to spoil. Gameplay wise he's a magical knight type of character thanks to his high attack and magic stats.

-Hugo-

The son of Lucia, a minor villian from Suikoden II, Hugo fills the old hotblooded teenage hero archetype. He's actually more than capable of  frontline combat thanks to being able to dish out ridiculous amounts of damage and having a skyhigh repel and dodge stats. His storyline sees you focusing on the grassland side of things and getting to check out the smaller tribes around abouts such as the ducks.

What type of LP will this be?

Images for the most part unless there are scenes in which screenshots cannot convey what is going on right. Then I'll upload videos for those bits as well as bosses.

So what do we do?

I will of course require your input on whose storyline to follow as well as who we should have in our party once we get the option to do so.
That's not going to be a problem until the third chapter for most storylines. Not only this but I'll need a name for a hidden character and the castle when we eventually get it.

Play With Your Buddies / Let's Experience the horror of Pokemon Quartz
« on: November 20, 2011, 01:49:27 am »
Have you ever decided that you really hate yourself sometimes? Now then, I don't hate myself enough to watch a Twilight film but I'm doing something just as mind blowing in the worst way possible.
Also, I've decided that I hate you guys just as much.

That's right, I'm having a go at one of the most complete Pokemon ROMhack I've seen which is terrible in it's own way in Pokemon Quartz. Insane dialogue, cheating opponents and even more insane monster design, it should prove to be quite... interesting in theory.

This isn't going to be a Nuzlocke challenge because the game is unbalanced and cheats like a motherfucker. I'm serious, the third leader is the best example in the game. You'll see when we get there.

Never fear though, I will post the poxedex entries for mons appearing in the following areas for you guys to name.

------------------------------------------

The usual suspects.... You'll soon wish that they made this game.

The creator of this hack, a teenager from Spain. As you would probably expect, his grasp of the English language is somewhat lacking to say the least.
So he has done a complete rom hack; Why, because fuck you that's why!

:D I have no idea what the hell you are!

OH SWEET ARCEUS, WE ARE IN TROUBLE NOW!

IT'S DUCK-SNAKE-SLIME-THING!

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n608/Quartz_LP/Quartz%20LP%201/PokmonQuartz_05.png

IT'S.... this guy. Whatever the hell it is.

Let's go my little eggies!

Our title screen, complete with a horrifying whatever the hell that is and terrible text. Now let us roll muchachos!

Ok? First question, where am I and who are you?

I don't know where this place is, what the hell is wrong with you?

(Self-insert FTL)

I highly doubt that sir. I am from Sinnoh so I hereby call shenanigans upon your Pokemon professor credentials!

I'm not sure about funky but it's kinda adorable in a stupid sort of way.

Yeah, I know all of this.

And why wouldn't you battle using creatures such as Shock Pork, or whatever you named it, at your disposal?

Yes, we should only participate in cock fights with friends. WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?

Pay attention to the bottom line kids, he's trying to establish arc words.

Please do.

I hope I don't get a Storm Boar or anything. Maybe like an electric bear because bears are cool.

But anyways, what gender are we?

or

Make a name suggestion while you are at it. 7 letters maximum and the best name for whatever gender gets the most votes gets to be used.

I'm doing a LP over at the Freakin' Awesome Network forums and got a small but kickass migrant wave.

How good is this dwarf? He made a masterpiece simple meal with some seeds and some tallow. That's how goddamn good of a cook he is.

Eh, they can't all be winners.

Also, what does Military Tactics do? Is it actually useful?

World Map
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Greek people were once a mighty nation, comprised of scholars and warriors. While under the thumb of Alexander III of Macedon, they nearly conquered everything before them. Nations cowered before the might of the Macedonian Empire as they slaughtered across the far east. The East was reborn through Hellenistic culture and Alexander

And yet it all counts for naught. The death of Alexander saw the Macedonian empire fragment and grow weak. The various cities of Greek broke away from Macedon and established themselves as independent from their former conquerors.

This is not a tale of Greece though. This is a tale of the mighty Thracian people, a nation of warriors considered barbarians by the Greeks and Macedonians and yet prized for their ferocity and strength of arms. However they are no longer under the dominion of the Macedonian Empire, instead they have become a nation to be feared as they will no longer remain content with being so small.

It is time for the Thracians to rise. And let the gods themselves tremble before them.[/i]

To the south lies the city of Byzantium and the pathetic Macedonian and Greek nations, to our west lies the barbaric Dacians and to our north are the horse loving Scythians. Byzantium will be helpful as a stronghold so that we can push into the lands of our former conqueror and eventually test our strength against the Spartans, the only warriors worth noting amongst the Greeks.

The Conquest of Byzantium
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

--------------------------------------------------

So where to next? Do we head towards Macedonia and the Greek Cities? Across the sea to Armenia and Pontus? To the west so that we can cut a bloody swathe through the Barbarians? North to Scythia and Parthia?

Also, if you want to be Thraced then go wild. We have fairly poor cavalry so that's just a heads up. Mercenaries are fine though and we can easily equal the Macedonians by picking some up.

Curses / [Money Making Idea] How about an Underground Fight Club?
« on: February 08, 2011, 12:21:51 am »
Title says it all really, what if there was a way to send some of your better hand to hand liberals to make money by having them fight in a fight club? It'd have to be pretty risky of course so maybe have there be a higher chance of them being busted by the police (due to being very illegal) or just plain having a chance of them dying through injuries.

Just an idea of course and I'm not sure how it would be programmed into it.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Bay12 Idol
« on: January 22, 2011, 06:57:33 am »
I'm sure there's some music in what could be considered the heart of Bay12 and the only way to let it out is like this.

How does it work?

***Each "round" of competition, there will be a MUSIC THEME in which each of our contestants will choose their best choice in song to represent the theme (in some rounds, contestants may be prompted to choose TWO a piece, but I will make that clear when the time comes).

***ALL SONG SUBMISSIONS MUST BE PM'ed TO ME. NO POSTING OF YOUR SONG CHOICES IN THE THREAD. Once the deadline hits, I will post the songs in the thread for everyone's perusal and discussion. Judges will PM their votes to me for each round's tally and once those are received, the results will be posted and a new round will commence.  A link to a video of the song is required in the PM since a video is just as good when it comes down to the general vibe of the song.

CRITERIA

***Contestants will be ranked and judged based on these criteria:
1) How well the musical choice fits the theme
Example: if the Music Theme was "90s Music" and your choice was "Free as a Bird" by The Beatles, which was a track released as a single in the 90s that was never cut originally as a Beatles track back in the day, then you would probably not rank quite so high in this criterion, because you missed the point of the Music Theme for that week.
2) Originality
I don't want to discourage you from "taking chances" in any way, so if you take a leap of faith and it really pays off in a "WOW, I haven't heard that song in a REALLY long time and it rules!" kinda way, then originality can certainly come into play with the judges. No one should win based only on how "accurately" they pick a song that fits the Musical Theme of the week, even though it IS a crucial part of criterion #1.
3) SHEER AWESOMENESS
You can be original, but what outweighs SHEER AWESOMENESS?! You can have a REALLY original song choice, but someone else can also have something not-so-original that is just bombarded with win molecules. On the other hand, obviously there can a lot of strategy involved in picking something typical or deemed generally popular, but at the same time, you have the judges' subjectivity come into play about some songs that have lost their luster over time as opinions of music from the past (or present) changes. Speaking for myself, there are some songs that have seemingly NEVER lost their effectiveness no matter how many times I've heard them and some that have lost a bit of flavor out of years and years of repetition and overplay on the radio and what-not.

***I will post the deadlines for each week's entries. Typically, there will be 4 days in which to send in your pick of the week. When the announced deadline for each week hits, I'm going to have to declare an automatic elimination. I won't hold up the game for those who have met deadlines. The round-by-round eliminations will still occur regardless of how many auto-eliminations there are. Once the submission deadline is up and I have received all the PMed song choices. I will immediately send the song choices out to the other three judges and let them vote accordingly. Judges will have 2 days to send in their votes.

Remember that it helps if you send a link to your song along with the PMed song choices just to make life a lot easier on me when it comes to posting all of the songs on the board.

If there are multiple versions of a song, you might want to be sure you clarify that when you send in your specific song choice. So yes, song title AND song artist would be helpful.

Finally . . .

It's subjective, so don't get too bent out of shape please.

CONTESTANTS

We'll need at least about 15 people to get this off of the ground as well as four judges. I'll be acting as a fifth judge of course since I'm crimping an idea that I've participated in over on the Wrestlecrap forums/

Other Games / Final Fantasy XIII-2
« on: January 18, 2011, 10:44:15 pm »

Quote
After years of build-up and waiting, Final Fantasy XIII was released to so-so reviews. The game was a disappointment. But, if at first you don't succeed, try again.

Regardless of fan bickering or indifference, the game was a monster hit for Square Enix, moving over six million copies.

The game's developer, Square Enix, is working on Final Fantasy XIII-2, a direct sequel to Final Fantasy XIII.

The number of Final Fantasy games can be confusing for non-fans. Each of the games do not follow sequential order, so when Square Enix wants to do a sequel to Final Fantasy XIII, the game does not end up being Final Fantasy XIV (which is a totally different, already released game), but Final Fantasy XIII-2.

Final Fantasy XIII Gets A Second Chance With A Second Game There is a precedent for this as Square Enix released a sequel to Final Fantasy X in 2003 called Final Fantasy X-2. The sequel followed the exploits of Final Fantasy X heroine Yuna, and Final Fantasy XIII is expected to do the same.

Square Enix has only unveiled the game's logo, which showed Final Fantasy XIII heroine Lightning as well as a new, unnamed character. It is thought that this character is Lightning's rival.

Unlike Final Fantasy XIII, which caused controversy by originally only being slated for the PS3, Final Fantasy XIII-2 is penciled in for both the PS3 and the Xbox 360, right off the bat. The game won't have the wait that Final Fantasy XIII did. According to Square Enix, it will be released in 2011.

Okay seriously? Why the hell would you give a sequel to a game that broke the fanbase in two?

« on: August 20, 2010, 07:17:26 am »
Now you might be thinking, Untouchable flopped with his Baldur's Gate LP because he is lazy. And you know what? You are mostly correct as I wasn't really feeling the dialogue and such that I had written. It's not as fun trying to write based on the characterization of the established characters as you never really feel like you can live up to someone like Minsc or Tiax.

So I'm trying something else... We are going to travel the Oregon Trail using Oregon Trail II . And now, let us meet our traveling party.

Lo all, Untouchable here for my Bay 12 LP debut. I've been wanting to do a LP of Baldur's Gate for a while now so here we go. This post is also going to act as somewhat of a table of contents too but first an explanation about what's going on.

For those not in the know, Baldur's Gate is a Computer Roleplaying Game released in 1998 by Black Isle and developed by Bioware, who are now best known for their hit RPGs Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect and Dragon Age: Origins. At the time, Computer RPGs were essentially in the crapper doing poor business. While the original Fallout was released the year before, this was essentially the game that was able to revive CRPGs thanks to a combination of being easy to pick up and also being a fairly faithful adaption of the 2nd Edition D&D rules.

The Following Mods will be used

- Baldur's Gate Tutu (A conversion mod for Baldur's Gate II that essentially converts the game to run the original game with the much improved engine of the sequel)
- Unfinished Business (Pretty much restores cut content and stuff that was originally going to be in but were dummied out)
- The Lure of the Sirine's Call (Essentially a mod that adds a fairly long quest in)
- The BG1 NPC Project  (Pretty much an expansion mod which adds a couple of things in which I probably won't get to. It also changes up the location of some late joining NPC's.

Alright, let's get rolling. As I can't seem to embed Youtube videos, the awesome opening is in the link below.
