DF Gameplay Questions / Can dwarves only hold one item?
« on: December 10, 2022, 10:53:45 am »
I was having a big problem in latest reclaim, where dwarves were just flat out refusing to do any mining.  I was almost out of ideas, but then I decided to remove the "Hunting" labor from one of the miners (I had given it to every dwarf).  He immediately put down his crossbow and went and started digging.

Does this mean that a dwarf can only wield one tool at a time, and won't mine if he's already carrying a weapon?  I've encountered the "no free grasp" issue in Adventure mode plenty, but this is pretty inconvenient.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Authors in Sieges
« on: June 17, 2016, 08:20:23 pm »
Last night, my fortress was under siege by an overwhelming army of goblins and elves (in the goblin civilization).  At some point I noticed in the combat reports that an elf was using a book as a weapon.  At first I thought she had just picked up one that belonged to my fortress, but upon closer inspection I saw that she was carrying two books, both authored by herself.

The elf, Utes Poisonbrain

The books

Legends mode didn't show much of interest - just that she had written several more books.

Has anyone else seen anything like this?  It would be nice if sieges could be a regular source of books.  Unfortunately, our strength was broken before we could collect these two.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Idea: Berserker Squad
« on: June 25, 2011, 12:34:39 am »
I thought of a Fun idea earlier, and I thought I'd see if anyone's tried anything like it.  Here it is:

As we all know, a berserk military dwarf can cause lots of carnage.  Now, what if an entire squad (or better yet, your entire military) went berserk together?
Here's how I'm picturing it:

1.  Lock each military dwarf in a small room.  The room should be really crappy.  You can give them food and drink, but nothing good enough to raise their mood.
2.  Gather their families (they ought to have large families into a room, and kill them all at once (I'm picturing spikes, but of course magma would work).  Do other stuff to upset them.  Y'know, make them go crazy.
3.  Once a lot of them have gone berserk, release them into the meeting area all at once.  (If any aren't berserk, don't release those ones)

I think this would be very enjoyable to see.  Only downside is, there's no way to guarantee a dwarf will go berserk.  But I bet it'd be worth a try!
Anyway, just thought I'd share.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Best wood (in real life)
« on: June 07, 2011, 11:34:10 pm »
I want to pretend that it matters what kind of wood I use.  If wood worked like it did in real life, what would be the best choices for various objects?  At the moment, I'm interested in walls, stairs, beds, and cages, but I'm interested in any recommendations.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / How do you picture your war dogs?
« on: June 04, 2011, 10:28:20 am »
I know the game gives pretty detailed descriptions of them, but I usually don't take the time to read them, at least not once I have a lot of dogs.  Besides, the descriptions still leave some room for imagination.
I usually picture them looking kinda like Dobermans.  However, when I actually read the descriptions, it sounds like they're probably some kind of mutt.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Stalker with a crush, or prophecy?
« on: March 11, 2011, 09:26:45 pm »
Something caught my interest a little bit ago.  A fairly new arrival, a jeweler, had a strange mood.  She took one "rough milk quartz" and made a statue of the miner, Cog Cloisterattics, raising a short sword in the air.  This wouldn't be so strange, except for the fact that they don't know each other.  They aren't even passing acquaintances.

So, I thought she was some kind of creepy stalker, trying to win over this guy who had no idea who she was.  But then, I had a bit of fridge brilliance:

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Wildlife Alliance
« on: November 25, 2010, 03:36:45 pm »
So, something slightly bizarre (to me, at least) is going on.
For a season or two, one of my soldiers has been getting constantly choked by a Werewolf.  At some point (I didn't see because I stopped watching), a raccoon joined the fight.  Now there are about 73 pages of "The werewolf strangles the wrestler's throat" and 70 pages of "The raccoon bites the Wrestler in the head".
Is it normal for animals of different species to work together like this?  Or is it just some kind of weird coincidence that both animals are pissed off at this guy?

DF Gameplay Questions / Creature Occupying Site
« on: August 21, 2010, 02:01:18 pm »
I've got a small (for now) problem - Everytime I try to build a Siege Workshop, it gets suspended, because there's a "Creature Occupying Site."  However, it appears that the only creature in the area is the dwarf who is supposed to be building it.  I can't find any traces of pets or vermin.  Is there a way I can keep the Engineer from getting in his own way?

DF Wiki Discussion / Magic
« on: July 29, 2010, 09:34:28 pm »
Not sure if this is the appropriate place to discuss this (it's probably more appropriate for the "Discussion" page on the wiki, but how often does anyone really read those?), but I'll try anyway.  I noticed that on the entry for "Magic", it says that magic does not exist in DF, and is associated with creatures that don't actually exist in the game.  However, the in-game descriptions for Dragons and Bronze Colossuses describe them as being magical.
It would be more accurate to say that there is no way to practice magic in DF, or something along those lines.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Immortalized forever on a coin
« on: July 12, 2010, 11:03:08 pm »
I decided to have the dwarves make some electrum coins.  On the front of the coins was the human Kon Roarrelieved and dwarves, and it related to him becoming an enemy of the dwarf civilization.  I was extremely curious about this;  was he some unbeatable foe that had shaped the history of the fort?
No, according to legends mode, he was a soldier in some town.  He never killed anyone, "became an enemy" when my adventurer, from a DIFFERENT dwarven civilization, murdered him (along with countless others) a few years back.
It's one thing to have obscure people in engravings, but I always assumed coins had a higher standard.

DF Modding / Noble/Caste question
« on: July 01, 2010, 05:29:23 pm »
I'm working on a new race, which has 3 castes.  Is there a way to make it so that only one of the castes can be a noble?  I didn't notice anything about it on the wiki.

DF General Discussion / How long do your worlds last?
« on: June 27, 2010, 08:28:46 pm »
Since I like to imagine my games as a piece of the world's history, I like to play worlds for a long time.  However, I usually give up on this for one reason or another, and have one or two games.  Currently, I think I'm on the fifth game in my world.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Brain Damage and Drowsiness
« on: June 23, 2010, 06:45:16 pm »
My adventurer recently had a pretty serious head injury while exploring the caverns.   His skull is smashed apart, and his brain has some light bruising.  At first I thought it was a death sentence, but he seems to be fine, for the most part.  However, I just slept three times in a row interrupted, and he is still drowsy.  Is this normal?

DF Gameplay Questions / Can't assign traded weapons
« on: June 08, 2010, 04:07:17 pm »
I thought I'd pretty much figured out the military, but now I have a problem.  I've recently acquired some higher quality weapons from caravans.  Even though I know I have them, and can see them sitting in the stockpile, they don't show up on the military screen when I try to equip my soldiers.  The only weapons that show up are a few copper weapons, plus some wooden weapons that I assume are in the caverns somewhere.  Is this a common problem?

DF General Discussion / Interpreting Legends Mode
« on: June 05, 2010, 07:32:38 pm »
Whenever I read through Legends mode, I like to read the descriptions of the gods, titans, demons, and forgotten beasts, and imagine the mythology surrounding them.  It helps make every world and civilization a little more unique.  Here's an example of a pantheon from "The Eternal World".

Torish Shockedknives, dwarven god of chaos, war, and fortresses.
Lurit, mountain goat god of volcanoes and mountains.
Tobul, dwarven goddess of minerals.
Shin, dwarven god of jewels and wealth.
Ono, cave swallow god of weather, sky, sun, fire, and metals.
Angzak Newbud, dwarven goddess of rebirth, death, suicide and murder.
Lor the Lunches of Joking, dwarven goddess of labor, crafts, and dreams.
Ezum, dwarven god of laws, justice, and discipline..
Omtal, dwarven god of freedom.

(There's also a god of persuasion, but who cares?)

I imagine dwarven legends going something like this:
Lurit and Ono were the first beings in the universe, and created the world together.  Ono created the elves and humans, and Lurit created the dwarves.  After a while, they grew bored with their creations, and decided that they needed more personality.  To make this happen, they created and sent down three new gods to influence them:  Torish Shockedknives, Lor the Lunches of Joking, and Ezum.  Ezum favored the humans, and influenced them the most.  Similarly, Lor favored the dwarves.  Torish, the most powerful of the 3, was left with the elves.  However, at some point, he got a grudge against the dwarves.  He forced the elves to become as nondwarvenly as possible, and then decided he would make dwarf life miserable.  First, he he created Angzak Newbud, who introduced mortality and violence to all the races of the world, except for the ones that Torish favored.  He then created the goblins, who would wage war on the dwarves, and the kobolds, who would steal the dwarves' property out of spite.
Lor the Lunches of Joking responded by creating Tobul and Shin, who blessed the dwarves with a special talent for mining.  However, Torish is very powerful, and he still can create chaos for the dwarves by having animals, megabeasts, and other monsters attack them randomly.  This violence forces them to live in fortresses.  I imagine it's also his fault that they're alcohol dependent.
Omtal exists as a messianic figure, who will someday free the dwarves from Torish.

So, what sorts of stories does your Legends mode tell about the gods?
