World Viewer has been updated for DF 44!  Version 2.5.0

World Viewer provides an alternative way of viewing Dwarf Fortress world information (Similar to Legends Viewer by Parker147), created by parsing information supplied by the export option in legends mode.  Here are some screenshots of World Viewer in action.

Download (Windows): on DFFD - 64 bit version here (use the first link if you aren't sure which you need)  Source is on BitBucket.

Spoiler: Select screenshots (click to show/hide)

  • Presents information exported from worldgen - World Gen Parameters, Civilizations, Gods, Leaders, Races, Sites, Structures, Regions, Undeground Regions, Artifacts, World Constructions, Entities, Entity Populations, Historical Figures, Historical Events, Historical Event Collections, Historical Eras.  Including information not directly available in Legends mode:
    • Historical Figure family trees!
    • Battle and War summary information
    • Dynasty details
    • Mountain Peaks
    • Rivers
    • Race populations in specific regions
  • Simple navigation - Efficient navigation between different objects and all their relationships to each-other, including the ability to trace backwards and forwards after navigating through connections.
  • Support for huge XML Files - Fully parsed up to 4.7GB XML from legends export in 64 bit version.
  • Full export to sqlite - To allow more simplified analysis by any other tools.  sqlite database is <20% the size of the XML and encapsulates maps and history/site file data as well. Temporarily disabled
  • World Map - Shows world map overlaid with interesting information including sites, and civilizations.  Allows map selection to view with any of the detailed maps exported from legends mode.
  • World Timeline - Civ IV-like timeline of world events, filterable by importance.  Replay the development and build up of the world and the conflicts of it's participants, while the interesting bits are highlighted on a map.
  • Mod support - Designed to be as mod compatible as possible, tested across at least a dozen popular mods.
  • DFHack Integration - A DFHack script is included which allows extra details to be exported beyond the still incomplete XML export provided within legends mode.  Use of DFHack to export these details is the recommended use of World Viewer.  DFHack
  • Open Source! - And usefully commented! To ensure it continues to be useful even if I'm unable to continue to support it.  Source available on bitbucket
  • Dynamic filtering - Allows you to easily configure what you view, so if you want to see all the still living civilization leaders which have killed >15 things but less than 100 and listed as male, you can do that!

Please let me know what you think and if you have any suggestions!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / World Viewer 2012 - 2.0.0 - Oct 2
« on: March 07, 2012, 12:47:24 pm »
World Viewer DF2012 is a tool used to analyze and view information about a Dwarf Fortress World.  It uses, parses, transforms, and interprets information exported from Legends Mode.

Download from DFFD: link

Source: link

Screenshots: link

This is a pre-alpha release. - Rewriten as of October 2nd.

Spoiler: What do you mean? (click to show/hide)

Current Features
  • Legends Mode+ - An interlinked display of data from legends mode as well as history and site files
  • Interpreted data, such as Wars, and Battles.
  • Historical Figure Links - Including Family Tree (see image above)

Planned Major Features
  • Timeline view, similar to but more customizable then the one for Civ IV
  • Details on world population, races, and dynasties
  • Detailed and Customizable Map
  • Extensive Sorting/Filtering options
  • Custom Save Format so it's faster to load a frequently viewed world into World Viewer.

Instructions
  • Generate a world in Dwarf Fortress
  • (If you want to View a world with a fortress you currently are playing. Make a copy of the save and then abandon the fortress on the copy)
  • Enter Legends mode
  • Export Legends xml (Press "x") and Detailed Map/Gen info (Press "p")
  • Open World Viewer, click "Quick Load World" and point it at the new .bmp file that was created within your DF Folder.
  • Be patient, if you receive an OutOfMemory Error your legends mode is too large for the current World Viewer release.

Please report ANY and all issues you have, and feel free to offer any suggestions or requests you might have!

Special Thanks to Parker147, his Legends Viewer is a fantastic tool.  I appreciate him not only being cool with me reviving World Viewer, but also offering valuable help regarding the changes to the xml.  Thanks![/list]

DF Modding / World Viewer 2012 - Input requested
« on: February 29, 2012, 05:20:10 pm »
Hi all,

I created World Viewer.  But due to the existance of a superior tool in Legends Viewer (from Parker147) and a lack of initiative and time I decided to stop updating it.

One year later and an employment-based need to become more familiar with VB.Net and World Viewer is on it's way back.

I'm hoping to receive some input and some offers to help test various versions from the community and I thought this would be a good place to ask for some help.

First, what I'm hoping to get out of this topic:

  • Offers to test out BUGGY early versions of World Viewer, before it is publicly released.
  • Useful criticisms/concerns surrounding previous World Viewer versions that I would want to avoid while still early in development
  • Requests for interesting data that might be able to be extracted or processed from all of the exported legends data (history/site/xml/map)
  • Comments and Requests around interface.  In other words, how do you want to view the data World Viewer compiles?
  • Last but definitely not least, an idea if you would actually use or be interested in a tool like this.

Finally, a rudimentary progress report and general plan of action:

  • Read in all data from legends export and store it in an useful manner - Done
  • Compile new pieces of unique/distinct/interesting data (wars/dynasties/family tree) from the general data (event collections/history file leaders/historical figures) - In Progress
  • Develop a powerful yet easy to navigate interface - Early stages
  • Initial Public Release (new topic)
  • Develop interesting mapping capability - Not started

Just want to say I appreciate how cool Parker was when I talked to him about me putting World Viewer out there again, and in the spirit of cooperation to make interesting DF tools I'll be providing the source as soon as I have an acceptable release to share with everyone.

Please let me know what you think!

Get World Viewer - 2.0.17 - 1/5/2010 (40d compatible version, based on 2.0.14, not tested very much)

World Viewer is a tool that allows you to easily view the information generated during world generation.

It can work on modded and unmodded versions of DF, tested up to .31.18

View the included readme.txt for details on how to use the tool.

Let me know what you think or any bugs that you come across.  This was a complete rewrite of my previous World Viewer tool which wasn't built initially to support maps, mods, or even the xml files.  I figured the best route was to just start from scratch, and this is the outcome so far :).

Special thanks to:
  • Parker147 - I was working on my rewrite when I discovered his Legends Viewer tool, and he was kind enough to help in testing my testing, and offered some algorithm advice.  He's also been sharing his discoveries about uncommon events.  Thanks!
  • Fellhuhn - I also discovered his thread about parsing the xml file while I was working on my rewrite, and the posts in that thread helped to give me some ideas for the initial release.  Thanks!

DF Modding / World Generation XML dump Updates! - Help needed
« on: September 16, 2010, 12:17:40 pm »
Hey guys, I'm giong to back to workign on my tool World Viewer and I could use a lot of help in drilling through the new historical event collections, a new section that was just added.  I was thinking we could work here to go through them and also put a lot of information on the wiki page about the XML.  Here is an example of a historical event collection that I have for my existing world.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

So you can see there is a lot of good stuff here.  If someone wants to help me figure out how this is stored in here then I could add it into my tool, and it would also be useful as a general source of information.

DF Wiki Discussion / Suggestions organization on the Wiki
« on: July 29, 2010, 08:18:49 pm »
I decided I'd like to go ahead and take some initiative and expand on the original sticky post in the suggestion forum here.

What I had in mind was creating an index of general suggestions that have been offered here (and elsewhere) for the game along with links to discussions about the suggestions.

This could exist to assist two different groups in these ways:

  • People who have ideas about how to improve DF - People with ideas will be able to check out related ideas in an organized index.  This isn't just to see if there idea has already came up, because people who just ignore search will ignore this.  But this is also to allow people with ideas to see if Toady or other people have given input on their idea or expanded upon it already, or even if it is already considered as an addition to the game in the future.  This index would be valuable to those who frequent the suggestion forum so they can point new posters (in a friendly manner) to discussions about similar topics that may help them develop their idea or realize it had already been discussed at length.
  • Developers (Toady + Baugn) - It appears that Toady develops many of his ideas himself but he certainly takes a significant amount of input from the players, which is where things like the eternal suggestion voting have came from.  Because he is a busy person and there are mountains of ideas (some good, most not so great) it might be useful to organize suggestions into themes so that when he starts working on some items within a particular theme he can easily reference other ideas that could help expand on the idea.  Because Toady started the initial topic about this in the suggestion forum, I feel he would likely find value in a very good index.

I haven't yet gone to great lengths deciding about an actual implementation of this.  I was more interested in seeing what others thought about the idea, and seeing who might be interested in working on overall organization, and general sorting of suggestions and linking.

So what does everyone think?

DF General Discussion / Dwarf Fortress Wiki Forum?
« on: July 07, 2010, 08:25:54 am »
Hi All,

I had sent a message to Toady, asking if we could have a forum dedicated to discussing the DFwiki.  I thought this could be useful for large scale projects (like when the upgrade happened).  It would be good for discussing overall plans and getting general feedback on what the DF community would like to do with the tool often referred to as the source of info on playing DF.

Toady said that he'd like to see if there was community support for this, so I'm making this poll.  I tried to make the answers as descriptive as possible to gauge the attitude of the community.  Please share your thoughts!

Thanks!

I kicked off the bloodline game among reddit members.  I started setting up the wiki page and I think the story is fairly interesting so far, here's the link to take a look: http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Bloodline:Mareathira_Liceva

DF General Discussion / DFConfig - Suggestions Needed!
« on: June 22, 2010, 03:58:32 pm »
Hey all,

This tool was inspired by, and will become a part of the Lazy Newb pack.  It's purpose is to create an easy to change settings screen for DF to change various options in init files, a few hacks/mods, and swap tilesets.

Please offer suggestions that would be great for this!

Very early version 1.6 of DFConfig.

File on DFFD: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=2563

How to Use:
Unzip and place the files and folders in the folder with the Dwarf Fortress .exe

Features:
  • Easy tileset swapping! (including ability to easily add other tilesets)
  • Change Invaders/CaveIns/Economy/Temperature/Weather easily
  • Alter Population/Child caps
  • Turn on/off visible liquid depths.
  • Turn on/off Aquifers in newly generated worlds. (See Note2)
  • Remove [PET_EXOTIC] and [MOUNT_EXOTIC] tags, so that a Dungeon Master isn't required for training many animals.
  • Add option to use default or Laptop keybinds.
  • Moving the DFConfig.exe and DFConfig.txt files to a new DF version and running DFConfig.exe will automatically set your saved settings.

Notice::
  • This doesn't read your settings.  On first load it'll set your settings to the default (all on), all changes you make will be saved.
  • If you've applied the LazyNewbPack (V2.0) no aquifers patch, use their process to remove it or this tool won't work for editing aquifers
  • The settings which are not universal (mods, tilesets) won't apply to savegames.  New worldgens are required for them to take effect.
  • changing tilesets will blank your settings (for now), so apply tileset first, or apply tileset then cycle through the settings.  This will be fixed in a release soon.

Planned Features:
  • Read your settings on first run
  • Additional Options:
    • Colors

Credits
In setting up a tileset changer I added some default tilesets, below are links and credits to the creators of those tilesets.  I had nothing at all to do with their creation.

Hey guys, I started this article a while ago:

http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Menu

Basically the idea was to document what each part of each menu did so that people could understand things and Ctrl-F to find where the action they want to do is located.  Similar information can be garnered from examining the wiki, but I think a lot of people could see value in this article.

Recently I've seen this article mentioned at other communities and how it could do with some work so I put a lot into expanding it today, but I could use some help to make sure everything is accurate/as useful as possible.  So if you have a chance take a look and see if there's anything you can improve on.  I haven't tackled the military screen yet, but if someone wants to start, that'd be great.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Help with a weird mood
« on: May 26, 2010, 07:22:13 pm »

This appears to be a bug... BUT I'd still like to not lose this guy.  Any suggestions?

I'm curious if there is some way to use pressure to drive magma to the surface, using something like this:

(Side View)

I could definitely try this but I'm sure someone else already has.  But I thought perhaps pressure could be involved here?

If not magma would this work with water?

Thanks.

DF General Discussion / DFWiki - Reference/Help desk?
« on: May 14, 2010, 02:23:25 pm »
For those unfamiliar there is something called the "Reference Desk" on Wikipedia.  The reference desk is a place where people can post questions as sections, and people can respond with links to appropriate articles and elaboration, it's separated into a few different areas based on topic.

I realize the overlap between that and the forums here, but I could see some additional value in using the wiki for this as well, but if most people think there isn't a good use for it then I won't bother setting something up.

A similar idea is the "Help Desk" which (like on Wikipedia) would be more for asking questions about the wiki itself.

Do people think this is a useful idea?  Would any expect they might use this to ask the community questions in general about DF?

Let me know what you think :).

So I know there are a lot of tools for viewing your projects after the fact or during construction but I've always had trouble actually planning for and getting set for my projects.  So I took some trouble and tried to plot out my game in excel.

I thought I'd share it with everyone, figure it could possibly be useful.

This is a 4x4 map (192x192), and the larger blocks are 16x16 (of which there are 12 rows/colums)

So if this is useful for you, cool.  If not, that's cool too :).
