Curses / Protecting cash from Raids
« on: September 01, 2012, 07:54:37 pm »
Could we make the banks able to hold our unused cash, so we don't have to risk it in a raid?

You could add some negatives to using banks that poke fun at the way banks are such dicks with fees and regulations and what-not in order to balance the benefit of protecting your money.  Perhaps you could also add a COD that would keep your money for five or more years and give you interest, but you wouldn't be able to take out your money in the mean time or you'd have to pay massive fines.

Curses / Is LCS 4.04 the most up to date version?
« on: March 07, 2012, 12:00:34 pm »
Hey, I was just wondering if LCS 4.04 is the most up to date version of the game?  Is 4.04's source code floating around anywhere?  Is it still being worked on?

DF General Discussion / How big are Giants?
« on: March 07, 2012, 10:53:55 am »
Does anyone know how large giant versions of animals are in comparison with their smaller brethren?  Are they just unusually large, or are they GIANT car-sized monsters?

Another thing I wanted to know is is the ratio of [size of giant version] to [size of normal version] the same for each animal, or can giant leopards be the same size as giant mosquitoes?  If the ratios were the same, Giant Mosquitoes would still be much smaller than a Giant Leopard.

Finally right? Exotic Animals are FINALLY getting back into the official release again!  No more modding all of the animals to be regular non-exotics.  Also, it sounds like Civilizations are going to start to have a bigger impact than just what you have access to for embark.  Today's update sounds interesting?  Anyone else excited?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Somebody tell me what's going on here
« on: February 28, 2012, 05:04:43 pm »
Ok, so I started a brand new adventurer called Islas Gorhaxtura (Islas Sharkbrain) and lo' and behold he starts next to some bins scattered all over the place in the middle of a field where the city should be.  I assume Toady is going for a bazaar environment here, but the bins to the north-west of the road have no nearby traders while all the tables to the south-east of the road do.  Why the difference?  Also, anyone else think the last name Sharkbrain is awesome?  yes?  YES!

Here's the save in case anyone is interest:

DF Suggestions / Woolly Mammoths for Tiaga, Tundra and Glacier Biomes
« on: February 21, 2012, 03:32:14 am »
According to scientific findings, the last known Woolly Mammoths lived on a small island in the Arctic Circle called Wrangel Island, north of Siberia.  It was a cold frigid island with little to eat, but the Woolly Mammoths managed to survive there until as recently as 1650 B.C.E.

Now if we are to assume that Armok is a good and kind god, wanting to bless his world's dwarfy inhabitants with as much blood and pain as they can handle, I think it would make sense that he would create beasts that dwarf his dwarfs in the coldest and most unforgiving places in the world.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Armok, being the good and kind god of blood that he is would immediately see the great irony in putting a giant walking meat and fur factory out in the middle of the freezing wastes but guarding it behind a mean hunk of ivory and a steely eyed visage of terror.  The Dwarfs, being of sound mind and body... well, at least of sound body, would not only see the material utility of this great terrifying beast, but also it's use in war.

For too long have the polar bears and the yetis called themselves the kings of the north.  The distant cousin of the beloved and feared elephant should come to claim it's crown.

My suggestion is the Woolly Mammoth.

Toady, I implore you to gift unto us, your loyal subjects, the gift of ivory, meat and fur.

DF Modding / Graphical improvements in 34.01 for Modders?
« on: February 14, 2012, 07:27:05 am »
Are there any graphical improvements in 34.01 that increase the possibilities for tileset makers or 3D visualizers like Stonesense?  This might be a question best answered by Baughn.

I know that there was some stuff in the works for SDL something-or-other and I heard something once about increasing the control the tileset maker has over differentiating the tiles.  Any truth to these rumors?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Plumbing Systems Discussion
« on: October 20, 2010, 06:07:45 pm »
**If anyone has any plumbing related topics besides mine, feel free to FLOOD this topic with questions or comments.**

I am making a new fortress in which I want to have a highly sophisticated plumbing system for both water and magma.

I have an aquifer which I will tap for the system, but I assume using another waters source such as a pumpstack and an underground river would work just as well.

What I am planning to do is to have plumbing for EACH FLOOR.  This means that every other floor will be a plumbing floor so that if I need to change my layout to accommodate a magma forge on different floors I won't have to subjugate massive amounts of utilized space in the process.  Another benefit is that I can then put wells on each floor and in every room if I so desire.  While wells aren't good for a lot of things, they will allow me to put a well in each bedroom made from masterwork components.  This *should* make my dorfs very happy.  Like crapping in their pants every step they take happy.  In addition, I could probably rig up some royal-class magma plumbing for some of the larger rooms.

What I need some advice on is the actual methods of liquid transport and containment.  For instance, how would I tap an aquifer from beneath?  Build an up/down stair on the floor beneath it in order to have digging access to the floor above?  How can I successfully power a magma pump stack from the magma sea?  Also, I assume pressurizing the water will be a cinch using one diagonal openings into the piping, correct?  Also, does anyone have any argument against building wells in each bedroom?  I'll definitely have them in each meeting hall/dining room/hospital.  It might be over kill.  Also, it would be nice making them dorf proof, so am I able to build them over floor grates?

As I said above, if anyone has any plumbing related topics besides mine, feel free to use this topic for any questions or comments.
