Lore Post: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=132330.msg4713960#msg4713960

With the end of the Sahuagin Wars has come the start of a new Age of Sail. Exploration is at a fever's pitch, with new lands are being discovered constantly, and you, brave explorers one and all, have come to the newest and least explored of them all: The Yianmarese Jungle. Situated at the heart of the far western continent of Yianmar is a vast and unexplored wilderness stretching as far as the eye can see before dipping beneath the horizon. The only natural port in the region lies upon the River of Death, a malarial, piranha-filled serpent that winds its way down from the western mountains out to sea. At the mouth of that dread river lies a tiny enclave, Rivertown, that bares the honor of being the first and only speck of civilization in this otherwise untamed land. There is where you will find your fame, your fortune, your destiny and your doom.

Character Guidelines
RP Considerations:
-Your character has recently arrived in Yianmar. How and why they got here is up to you, but they have to be fresh off the boat. For plot reasons, you cannot play a native.
-This campaign is focused on exploration. The rewards and XP are handed out for exploring, and characters who can't or won't explore should not be used in this campaign.
-This campaign is not very strongly focused on alignment, morality or religion. As such, your cleric can worship anything he or she pleases, I will not be paying much attention to whether your paladin is breaking his code of conduct and if you have to be a certain alignment to enter into a prestige class, I will waive that requirement if you come up with a good RP reason why.
-This campaign involves sailing up the River of Death in a canoe fairly often. A limited number of people fit in a single canoe. Furthermore, there are not per person rewards for missions, only a per mission reward to be split however many ways. Characters are allowed and encouraged to split into different groups and go different ways. Due to the format (see below) this is way less of an issue than doing the same thing in person.

Mechanics Considerations:
-Characters start at Level 3 and have 2700 gold to buy equipment. In other words, standard WBL
-"Books" allowed are: the 3.5 SRD (as seen here and mirrored here) and anything available online, subject to GM Veto. This is so that people who own (or pirate) every sourcebook ever don't have an unfair advantage. Exceptions are possible, but don't be sad if I say no.
-The following feats are banned: Natural Spell, Leadership. You may recruit hirelings for money, but you cannot have a cohort.
-As mentioned above, XP and money are handed out primarily for exploring. Finding treasure, mapping out regions and completing quests are what get you XP, not killing monsters. That's not to say that you can't get money for killing monsters, but it would because there's a bounty or because the monster has valuable hides, not because it spews treasure out when it dies.
-You are required to post or link a character sheet and keep it up to date.

Format Considerations:
-This is a Play By Post game. If you expect to have internet troubles for a week, tell us. If you don't post actions, and don't have a Marching Order specified (see below) your character will not do anything until you get back. If you don't post that you're going on a given trip, your character isn't going.
-I strongly recommend require that all players submit a "marching order" for their character when they go on an adventure. This is their standard operating procedure on an adventure and must have the following information in it: Which canoe the character will be in (two medium sized creatures per canoe, plus either one large, two more medium or three small between them), where the character sits in that canoe (bow, stern, left, right or middle), where the character stands when walking down a corridor (front, middle, last, second to last, behind X, etc.), and the first three turns worth of actions the character takes if they suddenly find themselves in combat. You can revise this at any time, but if you don't send me one, you do not go on adventures. This is done so we don't take two weeks to go through a single combat round waiting for people to post one after the other.
-Although an ultra-basic "Shoot it with my crossbow repeatedly." is fine if that's what you really want to do, you are encouraged to have conditionals in the combat section of your marching order. Saying something like, "Turn undead if they look undead, Charm Animal if they're animals, stab them with my sword otherwise." is a perfectly reasonable answer, if a bit short. More than a thousand words is probably too much, though.
-A valid marching order for combats is "Let the GM pick something non-stupid." If you choose this option, I can promise I will do my best to have your character behave intelligently, but I cannot promise that I will make the 'best' choice. I'm only human.
-If want to deviate from your combat SOP for whatever reason, you have 24 hours from when I post the "You get attacked by <X>!" turn and when I post the first round of combat to tell me what to do differently. Likewise, you'll have 24 hours from the 1st turn to the 2nd turn, from the 2nd to the 3rd and so on and so fourth.

If you have questions, post them!

Forum Games and Roleplaying / You are a Grandmaster!
« on: August 23, 2013, 01:01:20 am »
A spinoff/synthesis from You are a Lord, You are a Lord II and Jinushi - The Tenno demands land! in which, instead of a Lord and his Courtiers, you are a Kung-fu Grandmaster and his disciples.

The first person to completely fill out the Grandmaster Sheet here is the Grandmaster of the Monastery. Everyone else is either a Disciple at the Monastery or a Petitioner visiting from far away lands. Mechanically, these are the same.

Grandmaster Sheet
Name:
Title:
Backstory:
Karma Spent:
Karma Remaining:
Name of Monastery:
Location of Monastery
Name of Style:
Origin of Style:

Becoming Grandmaster:
If someone wishes to challenge the current Grandmaster for his position, they may do so only after besting the Trials of Mind, Body and Spirit. The current Grandmaster will set these challenges and, if the challenger is successful, they may choose a single contest of any sort against which they and the current Grandmaster will compete. If the Grandmaster is deceased, the Scrolls of Ancient Wisdom (AKA the GM) will be consulted to choose three appropriate Trials and the first to complete all three will be the new Grandmaster.

Character Sheet
Name:
Disciple or Petitioner?
Backstory:
Karma Spent:
Karma Remaining:

All of those except for the last two should be obvious. Karma is how you build a character. Petitioners and Disciples start with 5 karma, while the Grandmaster starts with 20. Things you can spend karma on are as follows:

-1 karma: Curse, Ignorance or Injury.
1 karma: Blessing, 50 Ryo or a Piece of Land.
2 karma: Excellency, Competency or Special Item.
3 karma: Military, Bureaucratic or Religious Position.

A Koku is a value of money worth as much food as one peasant eats in one year. A Special Item is mechanically the same as either a Competency or Excellency (not both), but can be stolen by or given to another character.

Unspent karma can be spent at a rate of 1 karma per Die spent on the action to do so (see below). Things worth karma can be forsaken (generally by giving them away to the poor) to gain karma at the same rate. Yes, that means you can heal an injury, break a curse or become less ignorant by spending karma, and that giving away money and material goods makes you more lucky and better at kung-fu.

But what do these things that you can buy do? For that, we must look at Action Resolution:

The game is divided into Seasons. Every season, you get 5 Dice. Each Die is assigned to some action, with at least 1 and at most 3 Die for every (non-fluff) action you take. For every Die assigned to an action, I will roll 1d6 and consult the following chart.

Chart:
1. Something Dangerous Happens! You fail. If you don't have a Competency that applies, gain an Injury.
2. Something Bad Happens! You fail. If you have an Ignorance that applies, treat this as a 1 instead.
3. Something Unlucky Happens! If you have a Blessing, treat this as a 5 instead, but remove the Blessing. Otherwise, you fail.
4. Something Lucky! If you have a Curse or Injury that applies, treat this as a 3. Otherwise, you succeed.
5. Something Good Happens! You succeed. If you have an Excellency that applies, treat this as a 6.
6. Something Enlightening Happens! You succeed and gain 1d6 Karma!

If dice results are rolled, all of the results apply; a 1, 3 and a 6 means that Something Dangerous and Unlucky but Enlightening Happens. If you fail to spend all of your dice for a season, Random Events will occur. Combat is a special case: In addition to the results of roll itself, the person you attack gains injuries equal to the highest Die you roll. They attacker doesn't take injuries unless they roll lots of 1s or their victim fights back.

Death:
If your character accumulates more than 5 injuries, they die! If this happens, you can be Reincarnated as a character with karma equal to your character's unspent karma. Alternatively, you can hang around as a Ghost for a while, haunting the Monastery until someone either exorcises you or your last wishes are fulfilled.

As seen here: http://www.smbc-comics.com/?id=2131

Moves will be submitted to Grek via PM with a 24 hour timeline. Odd numbered contestants will be paired against even numbered contestants. No more than one round per person at a time. When sending in your turn, include your move, your chosen modifier (if any) and the name of your opponent. In the event of a time travel paradox, all players swap their complex and real point values.

Go.

Guardian Angel Ragnarok is a RPG written and developed almost entirely by Koumei on The Gaming Den game design forum. I wrote the section on Magic, though, so blame me for that.

In GAR, you play as a one of a team of Valkyries who have come down to Midgard in hopes of finding brave warriors to fight on the side of the Aesir at Ragnorok. Each Valkyrie player also controls one or more mortal charges, who they are trying to lead to death and glory. Additional, non-Valkyrie players are welcome, even (and especially) if you're unsure of your availability or just want to try the game out. Seriously, I want to get as many people playing as possible. Games will be on Friday evenings, US time, using Roll20.net assuming there are players for it. Alternative arrangements can be made, if people need a different time.

In order to sign up, you must create at least one human character using the following character sheet:
Spoiler: Human Sheet (click to show/hide)
You may, but are not required to create as many additional human characters as you want (though you only control one in a given session) and/or one Valkyrie character using the sheet below, should you wish to be put in the running for one of the limited number of a Valkyrie slots:
Spoiler: Valkyrie Sheet (click to show/hide)
Please only sign up as a Valkyrie if you plan to be there every session! If you have any questions, just ask.

What a tragic day in American history this is, where the power to destroy planets comes second to the deficit. What's next? No more Halo Array funding? Stopping research on Death Rays? Banning the use of the Earthquake machine?

Would anyone be interested in playing PDQ: Ninja Burger? For those unaware PDQ (aka Prose Descriptive Qualities) is a rules light system wherein you design a character by assigning them a number of qualities, ranging from Poor [-2] to Master [+6]. The core ruleset is here for free.

Our specific game shall take place in a fusion between the Snow Crash and the Ninja Burger* settings, wherein each of the player characters take the role of a member of a noble sect of fast food delivery ninjas to race against time to bring hot delicious burgers across corporate lines, evading sky pirates, franchise samurai, mafia deliverators and other evil-doers in order to make their appointed delivery in 30 minutes or less.

*I will neither be using nor requiring the official Ninja Burger rules. While the setting concept is pretty cool, the actual rules they came up with were sorta lame. Also, I like Neal Stephenson stuff.

Life Advice / Really missing my Crush. What should I do?
« on: December 03, 2012, 07:50:09 pm »
Problem is as described in the thread title. I miss my delicious delicious Crush soda (especially the grape and orange flavours) now that local stores have stopped stocking it and only have Fanta, which (IMHO) tastes terrible. How can I get more without driving further than I'd like to?

I recently mad the change over from IE9 to Firefox full time, so that I could have AdBlock and NoScript. But I'm not quite familiar with all of the tips and tricks and useful "I didn't know you could do that" kinda stuff yet. Anyone that uses Firefox, please tell me about all of the non-obvious features that I might be missing out on.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / You Are an Blue Wizard!
« on: September 22, 2012, 07:02:59 pm »
Magic has long faded from the earth, waning away to next to nothing. All that remains of the once unlimited arts of long lost Atlantis are a few mysterious artifacts, a unified language across the realm and, of course, the race of wizards. Unlike the ancient sorcerers of old, the wizards of this world are limited both in their reach and their span. Each is mortal, living no longer than any other man, and of sharply limited powers, only having two score and two spells for all their lives, no more and no less. Thirteen curses, eleven transformations, seven glamours, five divinations, three prophecies, two acts of healing and a single spell to open the gates of Hades one last time.

You are, or rather were, one such wizard. On one dark and lonesome night, an apparition appeared before you, whispering in your ear the secrets of magic and ever since you've been a wizard. Since then you've lived a long successful life full of intrigue, wonder and magic, but now you've cast your final spell and your powers have left you. The halls of the dead have opened briefly to allow your passage, for a single night on the winter solstice, that you might impart your knowledge of magic in some lucky soul who shall replace you as a wizard. But who to choose...

(Give a brief description of your apprentice. Include their name, location, profession and anything else that you feel is important in deciding who to pick.)
