DF Gameplay Questions / Military does what?
« on: May 24, 2010, 05:52:41 am »
Okay, I just updated to the new version of DF(as in from 40d to 2010).  I have NO clue how to work the military interface?  Is there a good guide on the new interface?  I'm trying to set up a group of dwarves to go train so I can clear out some of the caverns I've dug into.

DF Modding / Current release and Maygreen tileset
« on: May 24, 2010, 01:22:48 am »
I was just curious as to how the debugging process on the current version is going and whether the Maygreen tileset version on his website is still current.  I downloaded a version about a month ago and it seemed to massively lag up my computer and I noticed that all my dwarves were immortal, even when every single injury that could be done to them was.

DF Gameplay Questions / Military Sleeping on the job
« on: April 29, 2010, 01:14:56 pm »
So in the previous version (not .31.03, the one before that) of Dwarf Fotress, I have been building a generally nice fort.  Things have gone well enough, and project Excavate A Ton Of Area for Fun has been moving along.  Periodic raids from a nearby goblin civilization have been a minor nuisance at best, being quickly dealt with by my team of champion dwarves, and their plucky sidekicks the Not-Champion squads.  However, at the outset of the most recent invasion, I was puzzled as my military dwarves weren't responding to my orders to intercept the goblins well outside the fort.  I found all three squad leader sleeping in the barracks with the other dwarves sparring around them.  I checked the squads on duty status and they should be out there, trouncing the goblin scum.  I am puzzled why my commander has remained asleep for about 2 in game weeks now as far as I can tell and refuses to lead his dwarves to the surface to remove the goblin infestation.

Unrelated to the first issue, but I've also noticed that in the latest version, a group of trogs appears to be distracted with endlessly applying a non fatal beating to one of my dwarves who wandered down into the caverns where they live.  They've been at it for a season now, and the dwarf is still alive.  I sealed the cave off since I have no military to speak of (has a guide for the new military system been compiled?), but at this rate I think I might be able to recover him if they take long enough.

DF Gameplay Questions / Purifying Water

All the water around my fortress has become muddy or murky.  What's the best to get it clear again?

DF Modding / Tilesets and Dwarf management
« on: February 04, 2010, 11:37:55 am »
Okay, I am beginning to become overwhelmed by the number of dwarves in my fortress.  My first fortress reached 110 before poor job management on my part led to all the planters hauling stone for 2 years (forgot to tell them not to help with that) and my lack of attention to my stocks caused a mass starvation which led to a temper tantrum spiral and yeah.  So I have two questions: One, what is a good tileset that you all like? I have been using MayDay Green's tileset, but the website appears to be down now.  Second, what dwarf management tools do you guys use? I tried to use Dwarfmanager, but there is a compatability issue with either Win7 or the tileset, probably Win7 and it cannot load my dwarves.  Any suggestions?

DF Gameplay Questions / Draining a pond

So I keep finding sections of water in spots that are... inconvinent for me.  Is there a way I can SAFELY drain a pond?

DF Gameplay Questions / Starvation!
« on: January 25, 2010, 03:37:20 am »
Not quite sure how it happened, but all the sudden I found myself totally out of food.  Best I can tell, my farmers just forgot to plant cause I forgot to take them off tasks like carting off all the stone I was hauling out of the underparts of the mountain and such, and so now winter has arrived and there is no food in my fortress.  I've been reassigning everyone I can to fishing, hunting, and farming, but what can I do to generate emergency food? 4 dwarves have already starved to death, some of my legendary dwarves are throwing tantrums, and I'm worried some of them might start to go.

DF Gameplay Questions / Multiple Saves/Fortresses
« on: January 23, 2010, 10:55:44 pm »
Is it possible for me to create multiple saves (in case I want to go back and say, buy spider silk last year before a dwarf I've been training up goes insane), or make multiple fortresses before my first one is annihlated?  For that matter, at what point does the game consider me to have 'lost'?

DF Gameplay Questions / My dwarves are going crazy!
« on: January 22, 2010, 09:11:33 am »
So, I've had two dwarves who have gone insane despite, as far as I can tell, there being (at least somewhere) all the materials they need for their artifact, or at least, the stocks menu says I have the stuff they need.  This was a minor inconvience on the first one (a peasant who recently arrived went melancholy), but on the second, my broker/brewer/mayor went absolutetly berserk and started rampaging around the fortress.  I guess my questions are as follows: 1) When they ask for cloth, does it matter whether I give them plant fiber or silk?  If so, can I extract the silk cloth from completed silk cloth items?  2) How do I stop rampaging crazy dwarves?
