Life Advice / Need a "new" car...
« on: September 26, 2013, 06:57:14 am »
Hello.

My current car stopped working and now I need a new car. But there are so bloody many out there, and I am not exactly an expert on cars. I need a car that is reliable and fuel economic, and would like it to look reasonably "modern-ish" if possible. It will be used mostly on long, straight Australian rural roads, the sort of roads you go 100kph on the whole way with no stopping. Maintenance should be cheap and minimal.

So far, here are what I have found:

http://eliteautos.shopforcars.com.au/2005-toyota-corolla-ultima-zze122r-31597.htm - 2005 Corolla, supposedly lasts forever. A bit bland (and a bit old) but no real issue with the design.

http://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/details/Honda-Civic-2008/AGC-AD-14397384/?Cr=37&sdmvc=1 - 2008 Civic. I like the "moderny" design and they are supposedly reliable. Its a bit far away, so I would only check it out if there is a good chance I would buy it.

http://eliteautos.shopforcars.com.au/2006-ford-focus-lx-ls-31687.htm - 2006 Focus. Looks nice and is $1000 cheaper than the others. Interior is covered in buttons of varying functionality.

Any comments on the above choices/other recommendations? Any obvious "gotchas" I should look out for? Thanks in advance!

Hello

I have started learning Python and have been working on a game in my free time. Project Platformer (my naming convention, my previous project that i never released was "Project Game")

It is a platformer, with a modding style similar to Dwarf Fortress.

I also have began learning Blender to make some of the graphics. And Gimp to make more graphics, and textures. I tried pixel art, but once i had some sprites that I liked, i realized how many more I would need to create and it took me forever to make just a handful. I'm not an artist (but I am trying)

Anyway, this is obviously more a Tech Demo, as many features that I want to implement are missing/broken.

Also, it is the pyc files, I don't want to release the source yet until closer to completion, as I would like to fix/clean the code first.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=2N66H3MA

Some notes:

The animation files (text files) must not be more than 1 folder deep
It uses a couple of os.system() somewhere, but as far as I can remember only "cls", and it works for me in windows and linux.
A tag, PPALPHA, broke one day for me, and I was wondering whether it works for anyone (all it does now for me is make transparency pink, and slow the game considerably)
The comments in the text files are from long ago, and are not a reliable source of documentation (they are mostly ramblings anyway)
I was fiddling with HTML at the time, thats why the tags use <>.
It uses Python and Pygame. I make this using Python 2.7.1
You can click and drag objects around on the screen, but the current floor thing is a very large sprite and causes havok.
The AI is broken, as it is technically inside a sprite (the floor sprite), and doesnt take into account the adjusted rectangle defined in the files. If you place it on an object, it should start working.
The file for the cloud, is a png with a bmp file extention.
There is a sort-of textbox if you collide (inside) the AI.
The controls are WSAD, and F to attack. I intend to allow you to change the controls as the FPS controls don't work well for a platformer.
The console will still show lots of debuggy stuff, and the log file can get rather large.

I intend to write a readme soon. You can use any of the non-pyc files (graphics etc) if you want. I intend to flesh the game out into a full rpg/platforming game with cutscenes and all sorts of things.

Anyway, I was looking for feedback and opinions. I may not have much free time for a while to work on it due to Exams.

Also, should I also upload on the PyGame website? Is it useful for feedback?

General Discussion / Spam from "webmaster@bay12forums.com"?
« on: December 03, 2010, 05:37:37 am »
I opened up my email, and found 3 junk emails from "webmaster@bay12forums.com".

They each have 4 links to websites with trash names (eg ubwskaoige.com)

Yahoo shows them as from: "trash@trash.com <webmaster@bay12forums.com>" ("trash" being whatever random string of letters you can imagine).

Has anyone seen something like this or know anything about it?

General Discussion / Debian on thinclient
« on: May 23, 2010, 07:09:16 am »
Hello.

I have a compaq T20 which I aquired. I never had a thinclient before so I plugged it in, expecting to see a windows-ish thing appear on screen (the side says "windows powered"). But I got a debian console. But I cant work it. no matter what I type in the console, pushing enter just moves to the next line, no error or anything. I tried commands like "fdisk" and "sudo" and still no result. I would expect mashing the keyboard and hitting enter would bring up an error message, but it just moves to the next line.

So i was wondering, did I miss something obvious in debian, some special command to make something happen, or is my thinclient version of debian just broken.

(the "General discussion" category seemed the right place, but I apologise if it should have been posted somewhere else)

Other Games / Pathfinding in Python project
« on: May 08, 2010, 02:10:37 am »
Hello.

I wanted pathfinding in my Python game project thing, that I am making to help me learn Python. So I went straight to the Wikipedia entry on pathfinding and tried to use their sample algorithm. It sort of works, but realy buggy and I became stuck trying to fix it.

Here is the code:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It worked for [1,1] -> [3,1] (the "Creatures" class has variable "self.Location"), but i tried [1,1] -> [4,1] and it comes up with

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

i made the commented out while-loop version (just underneath) to print variables (and test some insane theory that the for loop wasnt updating with the modified temp_dir) and the result is (starting from the last "BEGIN WALL REMOVAL")

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

(sorry about the massive ammount of text)

Can anyone give advice as to what im doing wrong (apart from the tons of spagetti code).

I can upload the entire thing as soon as I get the rest of it to function somewhat again (will take minutes to hours, only need to modify and change some things)

Thank you for your help.

Other Games / Underground themed games
« on: May 05, 2010, 07:37:08 am »
Hello

I always liked games/moves/anything with an underground/claustrophobic theme to it. A good example is the original Red Faction. Obviously another good example is Dwarf Fortress, and minecraft (which i am closely following).

I was looking for more games themed underground, but found suprisingly little on google.

Can anyone reccommend some?

DF General Discussion / My worlds dont have wildlife
« on: April 07, 2010, 08:57:27 am »
Hello.

I have generated 3 worlds, and none seem to have any wildlife except megabeasts and civilizations. Wherever i embark there is not an animal insight. I dug into and explored an underground cave network and not a thing in sight. In adventure mode there are never any random encounteres no matter how much i move in world map. not suprisingly, adventure mode is very barren.

I am using DF2010. I decided not to post this in the bugs section or the bug tracker since im sure its not a bug and some option i accidently changed or something, considering other people have wildlife. I diddnt want to clog up the tracker with something thats probably not a game bug.

Does anyone else have this problem (i searched)? how can i fix it?

Thanks

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / h.. How much thread?
« on: April 02, 2010, 07:37:41 am »
I have been playing the new version for hours straight and havent yet encountered a single bug (except during world gen). But i am not sure if this is a bug.

I decided to grow pig tails and extract thread. I did so. I decided to weave into cloth and...

Needs how much now!!??

Is this supposed to happen, or do i have to farm pig tails for the better part of the millennia?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Water, as an object?
« on: January 26, 2010, 06:03:05 am »
Hello. I am not sure if this has been observed before, but i searched and found nothing.

Being relatively new to Dwarf Fortress (and completely addicted), I have found numerous oddities, which I have read about and understand. But one day when a dwarf was bringing water to a prisoner, who was near a food stockpile, the dwarf dropped a stack of 9 water. Note, it isnt in the bucket, but rather, on the bucket. I was unable to find anything on this.

The closest thing I found was ice, but as a stone it is called water. I am in a warm enviroment, during autumn, and nothing else is frozen. I am using completely vanilla DF. Has anyone else seen something like this?
