DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Suggestions for a challenge game?
« on: July 11, 2014, 09:12:12 am »
Purely by chance, the starting 7 dwarves in my newest 40.02 fortress are all female. "Huh, that's odd," I said to myself. Then I played for an hour before going to bed.

When I woke up, I had the idea that this would is a fortuitous good setup for a challenge fortress. I considered making an amazon fortress by killing any male immigrants, but I like to look after all my dwarves, and mass murder conflicts a bit with my ethos. So I ask of you, Bay12 forumites, to provide suggestions for challenges that would derive from an all-female starting group.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dwarf won't work after a mood.
« on: April 12, 2010, 07:10:17 pm »
This seems like a bug, but I wanted to run it past the forums and see what you all think before I submit it to the bug tracker. Short Version: A military dwarf, after successfully creating an artifact and being removed from service, refuses to do any work at all.

Long Version: A migrant, Rith, comes with some minor skills, including Novice Weaponsmith; I draft him since I already had a better weaponsmith. While in individual combat drill, a fey mood takes him; he claims a forge and churns out an aluminum war hammer, becoming a legendary weaponsmith in the process. I remove him from his squad and order some weapons made. Rith does nothing. All the appropriate skills are enabled, but he won't smith, nor will he haul stone; he just sits in the statue garden, venturing out only for food and drink. He continues training if I redraft him. Things I've tried:

  • Saving and reloading.
  • Destroying and rebuilding the forge.
  • Redrafting Rith and sacking him again.
  • Freeing the Barracks his squad is assigned to.

So. Any ideas? What very obvious thing am I missing here?

DF Bug Reports / [0.31.10] Minor bug with a bronze colossus statue
« on: April 03, 2010, 11:20:51 pm »
I just killed a bronze colossi in Arena with several dragons. As before, the colossus leaves a masterwork statue. However, the new descriptive naming of idols and statues seem to have not carried over to the colossus; the corpse / statue is named ☼bronze statue of a ☼. The description is similarly odd:

"This is a masterful bronze statue of a created by an unknown artisan. The item is a masterfully designed image of a in bronze."

Additionally, there is another item on the same tile as the statue: a "Bronze Colossus 1's bronze," whatever that is.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / You are BANNED.
« on: June 24, 2009, 11:40:15 pm »
This is a simple game. Post an excuse to ban the poster above you. Doesn't need to be a good reason. Like, the next poster could say "I ban Shzar because I don't know how to pronounce his name." Try to avoid 'banning' people for serious reasons, like their religious views or whatnot.

So, someone ban me!

DF Bug Reports / [40d] Errr ... kitten labour?
« on: October 04, 2008, 02:07:16 am »

Read the last entry of the image. The kitten was in my food stockpile at the time, probably chasing some pest, completely uninjured. I thought the creature might have been channeling the suffering of his master (the sheriff), but he was happily whooping the rears of all the other soldiers, also completely uninjured.

The error message repeats itself a couple times a month as far as I can tell. I've seen it 4 times. My game is vanilla DF -- no mods by myself or others.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Frequency of sieges.
« on: January 30, 2008, 04:54:00 pm »
This is just a poll asking how often you folks get sieges. I am curious, because in one year I hosted two goblin sieges (one in Summer and one in Autumn, just after the caravan arrived), which seemed very unusual, since back in 2D Dwarf Fortress they came maybe once every 18 months. What are your experiences?

DF Bug Reports / [176.38a] Missing thoughts.
« on: February 18, 2008, 10:34:00 pm »
Apparently this she-dwarf has been hitting the barrel too hard and has erased a memory. World was created last version but was transferred to a fresh install of 176.38a. Also, I've had to terminate the DF process a couple of times due to hanging.

DF Bug Reports / Glassmakers can't find sand
« on: February 17, 2007, 01:53:00 am »
Here's the situation: I have two magma glass furnaces, both set to make green glass blocks on repeat, and a regular glass furnace set to gather sand on repeat. I have a handy-dandy stockpile next to the magma furnaces to hold the sand, and at the moment there are three sand bags in there, but I keep getting "No sand-bearing item" cancellations. I'm not sure if it makes a difference, but all three bags have decorations on them: turtle shell, silk image, etc.

DF Bug Reports / Noble exhibitionist
« on: February 10, 2007, 06:17:00 pm »
I searched the bug forum for this, and I'm not sure if it's a bug at all, but it seems weird to me.
I got the king the other day (also weird, because I thought you needed a high quality road for him to come). I looked at his general profile, and was surprised to see a "Pickup Equipment" job. I looked in his inventory... and he was completely nude. The king travels IN THE NUDE. I don't know what to think. Is this an isolated incident?

DF Bug Reports / [38a] slow civilization screen
« on: February 11, 2008, 06:56:00 pm »
My computer runs DF ok. 50 dwarves, 3x3 site, 30-45 FPS. But when I hit [c] and go to the civilization screen, that little screen with five lines of text, the FPS plummets. It shoots right down to single digits. I haven't heard of anybody else having this problem, and I think it's new to this version. Strange.

DF Bug Reports / [38a] Weird squad name.
« on: February 11, 2008, 06:52:00 pm »
This is utterly, stupidly, laughably minor, but it still looks like a bug. Just check out the photo. Specifically, the squad name.

Any thoughts?

DF Bug Reports / Ultra cheap rent! [33g]
« on: February 01, 2008, 08:13:00 pm »
So I discovered a way to take a fancy bedroom and make it cost very little while still being 'modest,' 'decent,' whatever.

Here's what I did:

I built a new bedroom. 3x3, nice bed, coffer, and a cabinet. I hit [q] to set the room, but accidentally shrank the room size to cover only the bed and hit enter. Price: 11*. I instantly saw my mistake and resized the room to cover the whole space and the furniture. But the price stayed at 11*! Thinking I was on to something, I waited around until somebody rented it and I could look at the dwarf's owned items. Soon enough, a child rented the bedroom, and he has a modest bedroom, with chest and cabinet ... for 11*.

Since I'm tired of my hard-working dwarves from being evicted, I searched out all the unrented bedrooms of my fortress and reproduced this little trick, but it still seems like a bug.

DF Suggestions / Regarding the naming of children (minor suggestion)
« on: April 19, 2007, 02:27:00 pm »
I was thinking that when a dwarf fires out a baby, the child's surname could be a combination of his/her parents' surnames. So a child sprung from the loins of "Claspedsacks" and "Razorbodice" could become "Claspedbodice."  The child's first name could be along the lines of Bloat 183:

Bloat183, CHILD NAMING, (Future): Children can be named after historical figures, including adventurers, and parents can explain why they selected the name. In general, the fame and infamy of adventurers can be realized in various ways.

If someone suggested this already, I apologize. Clearly, it is a very small suggestion, but I would like to hear some thoughts.

DF Suggestions / Traveling Nobles
« on: February 10, 2007, 06:23:00 pm »
It's unusual that even the wealthiest nobles migrate on foot with the lowliest peasant. It would be neat if some nobles migrated inside a wagon. A touch of prestige for the wealthy, and some extra wood for the poor.

DF General Discussion / Interbreeding in the DF world.
« on: January 16, 2008, 05:19:00 pm »
I was wondering today: are the main 'races' (dwarves, humans, elves, maybe even goblins!) separate species in the DF universe? Or can they interbreed and just haven't bothered to yet? Human-elf couplings are fairly common in fantasy worlds (Middle Earth and Tamriel of Elder Scrolls fame come to mind), though I can't think of any dwarf-human or (Armok forbid) dwarf-elf halfbreeds. I am inclined to think that the Dwarf Fortress sentients are all the same species and capable of producing fertile offspring, and centuries of living in different environments account for differences in height and facial hair promiscuity, and differences in culture prevent them from wanting to interbreed.

Does anybody else think about this sort of stuff? I'm not concerned about possible gameplay consequences (though a dwarf-human hybrid would pose a strain for the ASCII interface); I just want to discuss a bit of DF lore.
