DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dwarven Economy poll
« on: April 08, 2010, 04:05:52 pm »
I was just wondering wether the majority of people allow the economy to activate or if they go into the init file and turn it off.  Im not really sure wither i want to use it if DF.31.01 yet.
Once you vote, you cant change it, so please dont pick option "i like magma", its just a joke.  And for those of you who can never get a fortress to survive long enough to get a baron and didnt even know DF had an economy, theres option 4.

 thats pretty much it......

« on: March 20, 2010, 09:55:05 pm »
I've never used screw pumps before and im trying to set up a magma pumping system so i need to know what pieces of the pump need to be made of magma proof materials and how i should connect the screw pump to my windmill farm.  the wiki isnt being particularly helpful.

DF Modding / In serious need of Bauxite
« on: February 28, 2010, 07:11:54 pm »
ok, im on a map with a magma pipe....but no bauxite, and the dwarven caravans dont seem to have any at the home civilization to trade me. Every time i look at that magma pipe, its just taunting me, drivimg me crazy.

Is there any way to get bauxite mechanisms without using dwarf companion?

DF Suggestions / Buoyance
« on: February 25, 2010, 11:45:48 pm »
In one word, Buoyance. i dont know how hard or time consuming it would be to add this to dwarf fortress, but it would be awesome to be able to make a huge boat and watch it sail away off map with all of your nobles supplies.

(yes, i know you can turn off cave-ins to make stuff float, but it would be cool to be able to build a ship that "sails away" instead of just float in place)

[sidenote: also, liquid fire would be nice if it had some applications other than tradegood, im sure this has come up before]

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / "Unfortunate Accidents"
« on: February 19, 2010, 04:50:22 pm »
What are your greatest worst "unfortunate accidents" that you have had or will have had happen to your nobles?
Remember these are beautifully executed plans horrible unavoidable trajedies that fall upon your poor nobles and should be treated with respect....

One of mine: i built a sealed magma-proof room made of obsidian (with nickel door) above a magma pool only being held up by one support. inside was one casket, 2 levers, and a small amount of food.  two of my nobles decided that they wished to repeatedly pull these levers....not sure why.  They must have been rather heavy from sitting around all day doing nothing all the hard work they do, becuase support suddenly gave way!!! (never saw that comin) They were trapped at the bottom of a magma pipe, now faced with a horrible decision, hoard the food and live longer but dont get a proper burial, or, starve to death and die first but have your fellow noble give you a proper burial.......
.....at least they had some levers to keep them occupied.

DF Gameplay Questions / Economy......
« on: February 18, 2010, 11:27:45 pm »
ok, this is my first major fortress, i have 120 dwarves, a good military, etc...the main thing is my economy just started for the first time and i have no idea how to use it or deal with it. (and the DF wiki page wasnt too helpful)  Can anybody give me any suggestions on how to successfully run the economy without getting screwed?

DF Suggestions / fire projectile alterations
« on: February 05, 2010, 07:24:58 pm »
i learned from this thread (http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=47319.0) that fire imps have a problem with shooting through fortifications and grates, also they dont fire over channels.  if this could be changed so that such things would be changed in future versions in order to make imp defense systems easier to create it would be awesome.

im in a great position to start causing some serious mayhem, but im not sure what i should do (first) and im always up for some more evil dwarven ideas.

so heres my current position:
i have enough food stocked up for like 10years, so no worrys there.  i have 2 gorrillas <Tame>, 3 caged FIRE IMPS <wild> (no dungeon master yet), a caged GIANT EAGLE <Tame>, an Orangutan <tame>, a bunch of caged wolves <wild>, a caged Cougar <wild>, and lots of caged goblins <Bait>. i also have a river and a magma pipe on my map (hence where i got the imps from).

now there is so much stuff i can do with these goblins and creatures.......i've already come up with a few ideas, but i want to hear yours.......and remember, the more pressure plates and levers, the more likely i'll do it........

Example: create a complex an awesome maze full of hazards and dangerous creatures with only one exit that the goblins must survive through in order to get off the map.

[EDIT]: ok, i got the dungeon master and started taming everything, but there is one problem.  he wont tame the fire imps, can they be tamed without modding?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Demolishing Caravans
« on: February 02, 2010, 09:38:45 pm »
i have recently discovered a new feature of the human caravans that come once a year.....they have extremely effective destructive capabilities.  observe.....

my fortress outside is mostly underground, the outside is just an obsidian perimeter with several bridges which i can open and close with a lever. (no moat)  heres a graphic of one of the walls:

heres the story:
so its summer in the third year of my fort and im just minding my own business when i get the message that a goblin seige is coming. needless to say, i was quite happy as this is my first goblin siege (this is my first real fort) and i was prepared for them  ;D.  unfortunately one of my war dogs decided to go ahead and greet the vicitms goblins alone.(you can imagine how the rest of his day went) the next thing i know, i get the message that a human caravan has arrived (great timing right). looking on my map i see that the goblins are coming from the left and right and the humans are coming from the south, so i decide that im going to close all my bridges and the humans will just have to wait until i re-open them to get into my fort. so i pull the lever to close my bridges (blocking off my trade depot). needless to say.....the humans didnt like my plan, as it turns out, they are impatient.  so they station themselves outside my west bridge(before goblins got in range), so im thinking: "this is great, my marksdwarves can pick off the gobbys from the fortifications i built on the second floor and the human warriors can kill them from below." however the humans decided they wanted inside NOW. much to my surprise (because most buildings are pretty much indestrucatble) the humans decide to use their wagons as giant battering rams and smash my bridge to peices.  next thing i know, i see peices of wood and a mechanism come flying off my bridge into the surrounding area.  So im like: "THOSE SAVAGES JUST DEMOLISHED MY BRIDGE!!!"  (remember theres a goblin seige coming and my battle plan just got screwed) fortunately my 7 dwarf army was able to take out the 15 goblin invaders and a few of the victims goblins got stuck in my cage traps i have scattered around and i'll feed them to my fire imp later.  ;D

the moral of this story is, if humans want to trade, dont get in their way......

i wonder what other kind of damage they can do.....comment if you know
