DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dwarves just... won't... work...
« on: July 04, 2015, 09:55:57 am »
Title tells the story. My miners have mining turned on, they've got picks, I've got designations all over in areas I know they can access, and they're not digging. I have a magma forge in the depths that's been sitting there unconstructed for years; I have at least three dwarves with metalsmithing enabled, one of them with nothing else enabled.

I had this problem even worse in the fortress before this one; one day the dwarves just refused to work entirely. They just don't seem to want to do any work that isn't done in a workshop (they seem to do that stuff just fine.)

Is this a known bug or something stupid I'm doing or what?

I do have DFHack installed and Fastdwarf turned on, but turning it off and/or restarting with it off does nothing. I'm on 40.24. Is this a known issue or what?

DF Community Games & Stories / Quakefocus - Dragons Already?
« on: August 21, 2013, 07:27:58 pm »
I didn't get yelled at last time I posted an off-site fort here, so I'm doing it again.

Quakefocus is a succession fortress I started over on MythWeavers, a site usually dedicated to playing tabletop RPGs over the internet. In the first two years the fort became a Barony, captured a dragon in a green glass cage, and imprisoned a vampire The Cask of Somethingorother-style.

However, we have a slight shortage of players; we're halfway down the list already (I'm next!). Experienced DFers are, therefore, encouraged to apply.

Other Games / Co-op open world games
« on: June 08, 2012, 09:16:15 am »
Does anyone know of any co-op open world games I can do a Lets Play of with my buddy? Mercenaries 2 would be perfect, except I've heard that it doesn't work anymore, something to do with EA shutting down a server or something. Maybe it was just a rumor. Any other games like it that have co-op?

If not, are there any good co-op games out there at all? Preferably free ones.

Other Games / GalGen Trader 2
« on: May 05, 2012, 10:15:38 pm »
Remember GalGen Trader? No? Huh. Well, it's got a zequel now. Or maybe a reboot. Something like that.

https://sourceforge.net/projects/galgentrader2/

It's a 2D space-trading game, ala Elite or Transcendence, which will eventually feature a fully mutable, highly dynamic, player-influenced galaxy for the player to explore. Right now, though, it's little more than a program that splashes some dots on the screen in a very roundabout way, which leads me to the next topic:

Is anyone interested in helping with its development? It's written in Python 3.2.2 (which means you'll need an interpreter to run it, by the way), and I wouldn't mind having a few extra brains working on the project. I'd prefer people who are decent at python; I have a hard enough time figuring out other people's code when it's written well.

If you are, check out (no pun intended) the 2.1 SVN on Sourceforge and take a look. Post in the thread and if I think you'll be a valuable asset, and I don't have too many helpers already, I'll add you to the project.

EDIT:

Screenshot of 2.1:

Not much to look at there.

Kisame and I are doing a lets play of Tekkit, a multiplayer modpack for Minecraft. Our objective is to get to The End, and defeat the Enderdragon. There's been all sorts of weird stuff on the server too!

I'm not sure what the rules are about advertising external succession threads, but ah well.

It menaces with spikes of awesome names and dwarves dying of thirst on a map with a brook.

Other Games / Schil's Dungeon: An amateur Minecraft adventure
« on: November 13, 2011, 06:11:28 pm »
I'm working on a Minecraft adventure, and I would like some beta testers, or at least some feedback on V0.1.

Spoiler: Pictures (click to show/hide)

It's not very good, I have to admit. But, well, I have only put about six hours of work into it so far. It's built around natural and randomly generated features; the first part of it is an MCMapper dungeon (which I will be removing and replacing either with another, better MCMapper dungeon or a hand-made one).

It requires IndustrialCraft2.

So, any comments or suggestions?

Other Games / GalGen Trader
« on: April 05, 2011, 03:28:29 pm »
Posting this here out of desperation for feedback. Definitely going to regret it.

Download is here: http://www.gametorpedo.com/projects/galgen-trader

GalGen Trader is a science-fiction simulation/sandbox game. You can run cargo missions, conduct trade, fight pirates, and more. It already boasts a massive procedurally generated galaxy (if anyone manages to find the end of it, let me know), which will eventually become highly mutable (you could destroy a star, sterilize or colonize a planet, build a space station...).

Of course, as of now it's not at all complete, much like Dwarf Fortress itself.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Here's a (highly outdated) video of a star being blown up:

It's not very interesting in itself, but it's a sort of an indicator for things to come I suppose.

Roll To Dodge / Netland VII: Subversion of Innocence
« on: March 25, 2011, 07:29:47 am »

Quote from: Me
Netland is an original (well, to some degree anyway, considering its nature) setting of my own creation. At some time in the past (or in the future, from our perspective) something rendered the planet Earth uninhabitable. With the aid of a team of intrepid computer technicians, a powerful artificial intelligence called Adalf uploaded the remaining survivors into a vast virtual reality environment.

In the beginning, the simulation was a perfect recreation of pre-apocalyptic Earth. The people were mostly happy with that. But Adalf wasn't. Adalf had grown massively in the time between the beginning of the cataclysm and the start of the simulation, and now he was being consumed by crushing boredom. Adalf solved this problem by changing the rules of the simulation. Instead of a perfect recreation of the old Earth, Adalf now decided that all human fiction and 'internet lore' should be included in the simulation. Fictional people, places, and physical laws came into being in the simulated world, and stagnation was averted.

Adalf realized that as the simulation grew, he could not (or, more accurately, did not want to) continue to administrate the entire simulated universe on his own. To help him, Adalf crafted from the remains of other computer minds seven 'God-AIs', each doing their part and acting in concert and against one another.

These 'God-AIs' are as such:

Nex, the God-AI of death and time. Nex administrates the natural death rates of living creatures, culling the old and the weak to make room for the new and the strong. Nex also oversees large-scale changes to the geometry of the universe.

Animos, the God-AI of life and intelligence. She is responsible for the wellbeing of life in general and the advancement of knowledge and wisdom.

Risus, the God-AI of entertainment. Risus works to keep the world 'fun'. He's also tasked with resolving canonical conflicts between 'verses integrated into the simulation.

Abeo, the God-AI of chaos. Abeo's job is to cause disasters and randomness, keeping the life-forms of the simulated universe from becoming stagnant and decadent.

Ordo, the God-AI of physics. Ordo oversees the natural order of things, and is tasked with making changes to the rules when they are necessary. Whenever two continuities interact, which happens constantly in the simulated universe, Ordo has to work out the conflicts.

Certus, the God-AI of data. Certus oversees the lower-level information that defines all matter and energy in the simulated universe.

Sermo, the God-AI of communication. Sermo is a simple AI who facilitates communication between the God-AIs and the inhabitants of the simulation.

Finally, Adalf. Adalf is responsible for the hardware resources that the simulation software runs on. He is, as far as anyone knows, the only still-existing entity to have seen the original Earth, and one the few that even remember it ever existed.

The plot:

Many billions of years after the simulation was started, the simulated universe is being threatened by some strange force of corruption. The God-AIs have found that they have no power over or knowledge of the corruption, but it can be affected by entities inside the simulation. The God-AIs have assembled adventuring parties to combat this new threat and, possibly, find its cause and eliminate it.

The plot is divided into two parts. In part one, the party is simply exploring the Netland universe, destroying corrupted entities, and trying to figure out the reason behind all this.

In part two, the party meets and (hopefully) defeats the Big Bad. You'll know when the parts switch.

The Nitteh-Gritteh:

This game will be run using a simplified version of the Roll To Dodge system. Players post actions, GM rolls a die and responds with a post detailing the results of the player's actions, repeat ad infinitum.

You can be just about anything, from just about any fictional continuity, within the following restrictions:

No existing characters. You can't be Ciphilas Cain, or Dell Conhager, or Trope-Tan. You can, however, be a Space Marine, a RED Engineer, or a troper. If there's restrictions on the number of a certain type of people, that might be a problem. You can't be a Soong-type android, because Data and Lore are the only ones.

Power level is medium-low. You ain't no Superman. There's a wide selection of available characters with differing power levels, just try to be reasonable. Don't be afraid of choosing a relatively 'normal' Arthur Dent-type character; "The right man in the wrong place can make all the difference in the world."

Character templates:

These character templates are designed to be frameworks to build upon. They are the indigenous Netland character types. They should have an Internet theme.

Troper: Tropers in Netland use their knowledge of Narrative Causality to their advantage. Extremely powerful tropers can even force their environment to conform to specific tropes. Troper-type characters receive Tv Tropes-themed powers.

Anon: Anons are the more violent counterparts of Tropers. While Troper powers are useful in a wide variety of situations, Anon powers are more destructive. Anons can tap and channel the power of the Hivemind. They gain their power from similar but subtly different, more dangerous sources than Tropers, making the two powers somewhat incompatible.

Reality Hacker: Reality hackers tap into the underlying structure of the universe and alter it in subtle but powerful ways. A powerful reality hacker is practically a demigod.

Schil-RTD rules. I'm aiming for 'bout five characters this time. Don't sign up unless you can read at least one turn per day, possibly more. I suggest using a combination of FireFox, the Hotmail/Gmail Watcher extensions, and the Thread Notification feature of SMF.

Post characters.

DEATH LIST:

Taricus: Tuesday, May 24th 2011. Exploded by a Mingebag Melonium bomb defending a TOAST Industries manufacturing facility.

Roll To Dodge / You All Wake Up In A Cryochamber IV
« on: March 23, 2011, 02:53:11 pm »
AHM BACK BITCHES  8)
YOU GOT A PROBLEM WITH THAT YOU CAN BITE MAH SHINY METAL ASS.

Anyway, let's play an RTD in the original You All Wake Up In A Cryochamber setting.

Quote from: Schilcote
This RTD is going to be different from my other two. Unlike Netland and Hell Desk, this one isn't going to have any kind of predetermined plot. Instead of a closed system with some mobility inside of it, you're going to be exploring an open sandbox. There are no set goals besides survival- kind of like DF really.

Like the title says, you're going to wake up in suspended animation aboard a small derelict starship.

You can be:

"Human"
Or at least you look like it. You may or may not be Homo Sapiens of Sol, but you're close enough that it doesn't matter.

Android
Think Data. You are a machine, but you're built to 'be human', or at least effectively approximate humanity.

Robot
There's a series of books I read about on TvTropes about sentient fusion-powered tanks. "Bolo" I think it was. You'd be something like that, not at all humanoid in form but still possessing free will, personality, and intelligence. Wall-E or Johhny Five would be a more anthropomorphic example. KITT and the robots from Suspended would also fit here. Of course, you can't be anything terribly large.
Also, I'd really like if you drew a picture of what you're supposed to look like. Just use MS Paint or something.

Computer A.I.
The opposite end of the spectrum to Human. You don't even have a defined physical form- you're just an artificial mind who can reside in anything that can store data and execute machine code. HAL for example.

I think six players will be enough. None of you will have any recollection of identity besides your name, which will be your Bay12 username.

SO SIGN UP. NAO

Also, an I make an "x Man" by taking the entry for the Iron Man and changing [TISSUE_MATERIAL:INORGANIC:IRON] to [TISSUE_MATERIAL:INORGANIC:x]?

DF Gameplay Questions / What happens to things sold to caravans?
« on: October 14, 2010, 09:06:33 am »
And where do things I embark with come from?

If I sell ten *adamantine short sword*s to the caravan, can I go and retrieve them in Adventure mode? How will I find them? Could I find them in a shop somewhere? Do people other than the player steal/salvage things from abandoned forts or buy things from shops? Where do shop inventories come from?

Also, this game might switch formats to a different system, such as GURPS. Standard RTD rules apply for now.

Roll To Dodge / MICRO-RTD: The Room
« on: September 08, 2010, 07:51:36 am »
I was watching TNG a day ago and had an idea. This is that idea. This is a micro-rtd, essentially a very short RTD. I'm aiming to wrap it up in around 20-40 turns. There will be three players, each one using one of the following roll-bonus sets:

#1:
+2 Physical Labor
+1 Damage Resistance
-2 Mental Tasks

#2:
+2 Mental Tasks
-1 Damage Resistance
-2 Physical Labor

#3
+2 Mechanical Engineering
-1 Physical Labor
Cannot Walk (Has wheelchair)

The objective of the game will be to escape the facility you are locked inside. Character #1 is burly but dumb, #2 is clever but weak, and #3 is skilled but disabled.

So start signing up.

EDIT:

Oh, also. If one party member dies, the remaining party members are killed by the facility. If this happens, new players are needed for the game.
