DF Gameplay Questions / Dwarves not sleeping in assigned beds?

So I set my starters up with some nice larger rooms with a bed and even a cabinet! But they don't seem to like it, in fact they seem to enjoy the 2x1s I've been digging for the new migrants that I haven't even stuck doors on yet.
It's not the economy, I've only got like 12 dwarves at this point. They just don't want to sleep in the beds I've set aside for them. Any idea what's happening?

Now, as half my dwarves are dead, the other half-1 is blinking red Xs, and the Werewolf is a mess of yellow guts and spine and red Left Eye Teeth as it is chased by my last wrestler who is thirsty, hungry, and tired, I figured I'd try to see what had actually going on before I abandon and reclaim. Loosing is Fun.
