Forum Games and Roleplaying / Sun Sign (A roleplaying game)
« on: February 04, 2012, 07:54:14 pm »
A woman lies upon a bed, and several people bustle and buzz around her like bees around a hive. She cries out in pain, and a robed man stoops over her. A flickering blue light spirals away from his hand and into the bedridden woman's forehead. Her cry stops, but her face remains strained and fraught with a smothering pain. A young girl rushes in holding a wet cloth, which is then lain above the woman's eyes. The soon-to-be-mother cries out once more, but wrests control over herself and takes several deep breathes.

The woman screams in pain again, yet again charged with strain. The people surrounding her whisper to her, urge her on, and do what they can to help her pain. The pattern continues for many more minutes: wail, push, urge, relax, pain. And then, in an event that shatters the seemingly crystalline situation, a different sound rings throughout the air: the shriek of a young-very young-child. The woman sinks into her pillows and takes a deep shuddering sigh of relief. The people share glances of contentment and happiness, glad that the fragile scene had finally ended.

The robed man straightens his back, holding the small baby that he quickly wraps in cloth. Examining the baby carefully, the man grasps its hand and turns it over. His face, previously so complacent, undergoes a sudden transformation; the eyes grow wide and the mouth opens slightly, as if to say something, before stopping. The concerned mother stares worriedly at the man, and he silently gives the bundle to her. She mimics the man's action, grasping the babies hand and turning it over. What she sees there defies all expectations she previously had, all she could have.

For there, centered squarely on the babies palm, is a peculiar insignia: a radiant sun linked in perfect harmony with a crescent moon.

SO, YEP. This roleplaying/action/adventure story will be set in a steampunk/fantasy world with the usual cool steampunk stuff and magic. The magic can pretty much do anything (of course if there is the required energy/etc.), since in this particular story it will basically be... the alphabet of the universe (except this alphabet has millions upon millions of runes/symbols, with more constantly being discovered.) Some runes are rarer than others, some you have to discover, some take more energy than others, etc. It is also worth noting that many 'new' runes will be combinations of old ones.

The technology is also limitless, although it is initially steampunk/clockwerk (Although clockwerk can still be very extensive. It isn't as pure sandbox as the magic is, but it's still there.) Like runes, more technological advancements are constantly being discovered, and the new ones are usually adopted and utilized much faster than new runes are. The player-characters, can, of course, discover new runes/technology. Lost technology, runes, etcetera. There will be world events happening out of their jurisdiction, too. Anyways, let's get onto the history/character sheet, shall we, non-existent audience at the time of writing this?
---
History will be somewhat brief. I would like the characters to find lore for themselves, and I will attempt to provide as many opportunities as I can to do so.
Spoiler: History (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Character Sheet (click to show/hide)

I will accept 4 players at once, although some can die and be replaced. Keep in mind that your starting position doesn't really lock you to a certain path, it just starts you along one. Also keep in mind that each character has a Sun Sign, and that there are special powers and abilities associated with the Sun Sign that the players must discover. There will be much to discover, much going on, and hopefully much story. This will, also hopefully, be very sandboxy, so feel free to try to invent stuff, discover stuff, kill stuff, do stuff, etc. stuff. Stuff. Yeah.

I should also probably make a map sometime soon, but we'll burn that bridge when we come to it.

It's that time again... that time of science. I've tried to get this game to work on a few other forums but... yeah. Failure. Cue twenty-two posts going "I DUNT GET IT." Let me lay down a few ground rules:

You get to choose a primary knowledge, in which you start with 3.00 in, a secondary knowledge, in which you start with 2.00, and two books, which for all intents and purposes give you 1.00 in the knowledge that the book possesses. The books are, however, useless if you actually get past 1.00 in that knowledge. (yes, the same as Pandarsenic's. If it's not broken, don't fix it. I'll also be using whatever science-descriptions he's already typed up, as they were quite darn good. Of course, if he doesn't want me to use anything like that, I'll abide.)

Various forum-goers suggest different things to do. ALL THINGS MUST BE SUGGESTED IN CODE FORMAT, like this: (although you can talk and suggest sciences and such without diddle-dallying with this format.) This is to make it so that it doesn't get off-topic or somesuch quickly and turn into a spamfest of confusion, which seemed to be a problem in the earlier game.

- Research rats (0)
- Grow mold (0)
- Study programming (0)
- Create Killbot (0)

and so on. The brackets contain votes. If you want the scientist to do something, increase the number by the action. If you want to add an action, just add it in. All ideas that get to [2] (to start with) will be done by the scientist, so for example if two people vote to Research rats, then the scientist will research rats. If you do not suggest something in that format, then your suggestion will be IGNORED. This is for the sake of making sense and not getting carried away and such.
Certain actions need certain amounts of skill to do. For example, creating a robot will need high ROBOTICS skill as well as high (If you want it to be A.I. controlled) PROGRAMMING skill. Creating mutant ant-sharks will need high BIOLOGY skill. Creating an army of the undead will require high ECTOBIOLOGY skill, and so on.

You start with parts and chemicals (If you have chosen chemistry). The parts and chemicals that you start with depend on the SCIENCES that you choose to start with.

The sciences are:
ROBOTICS
PROGRAMMING
WAVE-LENGTHS
BIOLOGY
ECTOBIOLOGY
PHYSICS
CHEMISTRY
NUCLEAR SCIENCE/ATOMICS
MAGNETIC
QUANTUM PARTICLES/PHYSICS

And many possible more, providing you guys come up with some. So, let's begin and hope we shall get this a bit more ironed out, shall we? (I'm also considering making it so that you can have 3 sciences)

---+++---

You are a man of SCIENCE, and you are in your lab... if you could call it a lab. It's actually the medium-sized basement of a ratty apartment complex in the slums. You've just finished setting everything up, what little it is.

Your mind switches back to your life before this. Your life at the university. Those bastards did not deserve of your genius. Your genius in... what was it you were good at again?

[Yes, suggest the sciences you know in the code format, please. And yes, you can ask for descriptions of the various sciences]

as you can see, quite similar to how Pandarsenic's was. Again, I hope he is not offended by this. Either way, I hope we see great science-y related things happening to this thread!

Roll To Dodge / RtD: ARENA! ROUND 1-TURN 16: Self-Destructive Spider
« on: July 29, 2011, 05:12:31 pm »
This is my attempt at a relatively 'simple' RtD. There will be no traits, no goal, no complex inventory and injury system (you can lose and regenerate limbs, that's it), just a fight to the death, many rounds, and a prize to the victor of each round. Now, let us detail some of the things that aren't very simple in this RtD (which is a decent amount, ironically... I just can stay away from SOME complexity).

Praying.
You can pray to gods. This is simple enough, you pray, you roll, you receive what you receive according to your roll. You may pray to any popular, well-known, or even real god. Or you may make up a god on the spot. The rules for making up a god are:
    • You must choose a good and bad thing for your god. (IE, BLECH, god of luck and and blindness.) This sets the perimeters for the good and bad things that happen depending on your roll.
    • No super-powerful gods. (IE, DUDE, god of one-hit lasers)

Crafting.
You may attempt to combine two things that you have. You will roll to decide if your craft was a success or a failure, and if it was a success, what exactly came out.

Bonus's
Various bonus's to rolls are added depending on different things. Using a mithril spear will award a +3 bonus on a successful attack roll. Bonus's can only affect an action up to +3. However, if you have two items that both give +3 bonus's to something, they will both work. The maximum that double bonus's can go to one object is +6 in total. However, there is no cap on negative bonus's (That's kind of an oxymoron, but whatever). And, rolls can go up or down forever, so it would, theoretically, be possible to achieve a -100 roll.

The Audience
You may ask the audience for help. Depending on your roll, they will give you nothing, give you something good, or give you something bad. Some items may give you a bonus to this action.
---

You can do one major action and one minor action each turn (some bonus's may add to this, such as haste). You can search to find random, various things. In some places you may find secret doors, that lead to horrible monsters/weapon caches/various. There are also traps.

A 'round' will end once all but one person is dead. This person gains a special item.

To join, just post your name and your GRID NUMBER. The grid is, well, a grid, that contains various items. Each item is assigned to a grid number, and if you choose that grid, you get that item. Once six people have joined and posted their grid number, I will start, and then you do actions and so on and so forth.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Exploiting Loyalty Cascades
« on: January 30, 2011, 06:23:43 pm »
I've been thinking about loyalty cascades recently, and about ordering the military to kill your own people and such, and an idea occurred to me, an idea that could make a lot of interesting forts and projects.

Would it be possible to select a certain number of your population, put them in a squad, order them to kill some hapless kitten or puppy, trigger the loyalty cascade, and then put them into a secondary fort/area? From what I've read so far, this is possible.

Using this, you could technically make two rival forts in the same area, pretend that there is a 'wanted' group of dwarfs around, create a Dwarf Vs. Dwarf arena fight, and a lot more.

If anyone wants to experiment with this, and maybe create the first 'rival' fort, then I'm sure a lot of people would be watching.

Life Advice / A few questions about sleeping.
« on: January 06, 2011, 10:00:46 am »
So, sometimes weird things happen when I try to get to sleep.
I'd be lying on my side or back, and then I'd be unable to move for a few seconds. I would become very panicked for a bit, and then I would be able to move again.
Also, another thing that happens when I try to get to sleep is that I hear a large sound that jolts me awake. For example, a few days ago I kept hearing what sounded to me like a loud piano note or something.

I just want to know what these things are, if they are common, etcetera. They are a bit disturbing sometimes.

Also, another thing that happens (when I'm not sleeping, however) is that I'd be walking around or doing something, and then I'd feel very weak and tired and my eyes would dim and I would maybe collapse to the floor and lose control of my muscles for a few seconds and flail my limbs around. Does anyone know what these things are?

6
I have decided to make an RtD, because it seems fun, and I have an easy to use program that helps me, so I don't have to mass-manage a lot of stuff. There will be a max of 5 players and a waiting list, in case any not-fast-enough posters want to eventually join in.

Spoiler: Dice (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Character Creation (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Health System (click to show/hide)

Now to get to the story!

You wake up with a slight headache, a dull, insistent ache in all limbs, along with a cold chill. You are lying on your back on cold metal, and as you open your senses even further, you realize that you are on a plane, based on small shaking and the whine that accompanies all plane flights. You realize that you don't know who you are, but suddenly a wave of memories crashes over you. Your name, who you are, and your secret... your mutation. You realize with fear that most people feared and hated the mutants. And then beyond that... nothing. Other than those few memories, you can't remember your past life at all.

With a large inhale of breath, you sit up and realize something on your wrist. A bracelet of some sort, looking like slightly changed hospital bracelet. You peer a little closer and see 4 large letters. M.R.A.C. and under those 4 small words, spelling out: Mutant Reprisal and Containment.

You realize that, as the small hairs on the back of your neck stand straight up, your location and this weird bracelet must be connected to your mutation. You now experience an urge to get out of here. Whoever is piloting this plane can't be friendly... What do you do?

DF Modding / A modding question about Fortress mode.
« on: December 29, 2010, 05:18:13 pm »
So I want to set my population cap to 80, however I have looked around the raws but I just can't seem to find what I am looking for. Any help?

DF Modding / Just a small question.
« on: December 19, 2010, 10:10:41 pm »
So, after having a DF vacation, I come back to see it's now version 0.31.18. However, I've heard of the... rust factor, or forgetting of skills or whatever. I don't like the sound of it very much, but I've heard of ways to make it take longer before skills rust?
If it is even possible, would someone explain to me how? I'm afraid I am not very vexed in the ways of the mod. So, any help?

DF Gameplay Questions / Getting thieves/etc. into cages.
« on: September 01, 2010, 06:37:59 pm »
  So, playing 40d in advance.

I have recently caught 3 dark elf thieves and two kobolds in my cage traps. Now, I want to put them all in a cage and release them, as training for my marksdwarves. However, I used to have three kobolds and when I was trying to cage one, the guy attempting to cage the kobold got interrupted by it and the kobold then got torn apart by my war dogs.

So, how do I put any enemies into a cage, without them running away?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / What should I do with this?
« on: August 22, 2010, 02:06:10 pm »
So here's what I have: I got a magma pipe, bottomless pit, and chasm in close vicinity to each other, along with a not discovered yet underground river and I think an underground pool. I also have sand and a river. So, what crazy/stupid/etc. thing should I try to do with these resources?

And if you haven't guessed yet, I am playing 40d.

DF Gameplay Questions / Embark setups?
« on: August 14, 2010, 06:15:06 pm »
So I got DF2010 working, using the Genesis mod, and embarked, not bothering to 'prepare for the journey carefully', and just going, and it turns out that the 'Just going' option is really bad... two useless dwarves, and no planter! So I'm asking you all to help me out, either it be giving me an automatic custom embark or just giving me pointers on what to bring in this new version, as I'm kinda bad at preparing for the journey, even more so in this new version.

DF Gameplay Questions / Help with DF2010 lag.
« on: August 14, 2010, 01:17:23 pm »
So, I downloaded the new version, eager to try out all the new features, and started playing it, but it was kinda slow to gen a world and when I was playing it a window popped up on my computer that said the virtual memory was low, and it was slowish so I decided I would just play 40d for then. I have no really big games on my computer, and all the other games I have on my computer that I play never cause a window to pop up, even 40d, so I am kinda concerned about this, because I really want to play DF2010 and try out the new features.

  Any help?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Giant Town? What the crap?
« on: March 26, 2010, 02:57:35 pm »
So, I get a quest to go kill a giant (His name don't matter) in a cave named Birdpits (LMAO on that one), so I reach there, go into the entrance hallway, and get the nice:
"I am blablabla!"
"I shall rip you limb from limb!"

And then before I get a chance to go forward, another giant introduces itself. I'm all: "What? Must be some kind of wife."
So, the giants advance on me, and I go to battle with them. They are in the same square, and my last adventurer got his throat ripped out by ONE giant, so I want to be careful, but screw it and repeatedly attack them. Some how, even though I was carrying iron weapons instead of steel ones, and there was two giants, I manage to propel one away and it dies. One down, one to go.
I then finish off the other one, and decide to get the hell out of Birdpits (Still cracks me up), since I already am a bit bruised and have some yellow body parts. But, before I can get away, one of the right southern hallway, out comes ANOTHER Giant. He announces himself, and I'm all: "Alright, I'll try my luck, but this is the LAST one!" And before I can go into battle with that giant, I see TWO MORE giants coming to me from the western hallway, and one more giant coming from the eastern hallway. By this point I'm all: "What the &@#%!" and decide to run away. Before I can go up the ramp, guess what? Another giant traps me in, and I proceed to get gang raped by people possibly 10 times bigger than me.
  What the hell just happened?

15
I just found my underground pit. I looked around a bit, and saw a Giant Bat, a Giant Cave swallow, and to top it off, I looked at some webs thinking they would be the normal Cave spider webs, but they were not. I noticed the Giant bit and then sat there with my mouth open. I am sure as hell gunna stay off that level.
