DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Not Exactly a Loveletter to Fans
« on: April 19, 2010, 09:07:39 pm »
???  DF is great and thanks to Toady for making it.  But I don't get this release.  This is not what I have been waiting 2 years for.  It's great that goblins have been seriously improved but he's also seriously weakened DF standbys: marksdwarves, wardogs and traps.  The game plays the same as the 2008 release, except the player is totally screwed.  Where that release became too easy quickly, this release becomes unplayable due to the military interface.  Goblins did need to be tougher, but I need the ability to train my dwarves to fight them.  I need a fair fight where if I build the right fortifications for my guys and and give them the right training facilities and equipment, they will succeed.  Currently not the case.  Frankly the improvements to the world generator don't make this game better.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Hermit
« on: September 04, 2009, 09:05:52 pm »
Well at this point I enjoy my fortresses more for the stories than anything else.  I can't get motivated for mega-projects, etc. So I was working on a mature fortress (>$1million wealth) and out of boredom decided to undermine my trade depot while the humans were there trading.  End result was a hole through 8 plus levels of the fort, human and dwarf injuries, humans and their animals on various levels.  In order to increase the pain, I quickly walled in the surviving traders in their various tunnels, along with a particular unfortunate dwarf whom I named "Hermit".  All this in an attempt to get the humans to besiege me.  I would occaisionally dump beer and food down for Hermit.

When my "Hermit" finally died of neglect and my dwarfs broke into his prison, they found that he had built a mason workshop, crafts workshop, carpenter shop, his own dining room, bedroom, office and....tomb.  They proceeded to bury the poor guy in the tomb he had built from himself and move the countless skull totems he had created to the stockpiles.  The humans remain ambivalent about their lost trading party.

DF Gameplay Questions / Spike symbol
« on: October 01, 2008, 12:23:08 pm »
Can anyone tell me why the character representing a couple of my menacing spikes changed from a line to a sigma or big "E"?  These are connected to pressure plates.  Thanks!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Self Destruct Sequence Initiated
« on: September 26, 2008, 10:27:07 am »
I'm finally tired of my 9million+ fort and am trying to figure out the best way to kill it.  The current plan is to post all military forever (thereby causing tantrums) and never filling any noble mandates.  What else besides starvation and flooding can I do to kill these guys (212 population, 29 champions, many legendaries, 75 children!)?

Wait just thought of refuse piles indoors.

DF Gameplay Questions / Age of Heroes
« on: August 27, 2008, 04:40:13 pm »
It is year 209 for my fortress.  Spring arrived and I got a message something to the effect of "It is now the Age of Heroes".  Anyone know the significance?

Also, anyone know why the humans decided to siege me, then requested peace a few years later?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / My Axelord is Badass!
« on: August 18, 2008, 04:50:20 pm »
So my favorite new feature is kill stats and I'm sure yours is too.  I was checking out my Axelord and here's what he has:

'Lefty' Tongsopened the dwarf, d. 203
Mafol Rulercities the dwarf, d. 204

All due to training accidents I'm sure.  He is the leading cause of death in my fortress!  I love this game.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / How much do you love your dwarf fortress?
« on: February 26, 2008, 05:31:00 pm »
I love my dwarf fortress more than a masterwork wooden bin full of narrow giant cave spider silk left socks.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Mandrill Child
« on: May 07, 2008, 03:23:00 pm »
So I have a stray tame Mandrill wandering around my fort and the message pops up: "Stray mandrill has given birth to a child".  Now she's carrying around a mandrill boy.  I wonder if soon I'll have a whole parallel population of mandrills?  Also, she must have arrived pregnant or there was some sort of inter-species shenanigans going on.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Gross
« on: February 12, 2008, 11:30:00 am »
My military spends most of their time in the basement, sparring.  So when caravans arrive and I put them on patrol, half of them end up vomiting all over the front of my fortress.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Fortress of Trading
« on: April 25, 2008, 10:12:00 am »
My (no trap) fortress has been a goblin killing, hauling and trading machine for 3-4 years now.  And I am bored bored bored.  So here's the idea: draft everyone except one legendary trader, nobles, children and babies of course.  Hopefully the kids and nobles can handle the hauling.  I think the biggest problem will be not having a cook and a brewer, but lets see how long I last.  Hmm and I wonder if military still gets punished for mandates?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Tantrum Spiral Solution
« on: April 16, 2008, 04:12:00 pm »
I haven't seen this elsewhere so here goes:

I have been wondering why my tantrums are never really that bad.  I think it's my negligence in leaving good dwarves in the guards, to the point that I unfortunately have a couple champions stuck in there.  This, coupled with filling the required (justice) supply of restraints with metal cages, means that tantruming dwarves are soon locked up.  Some die in jail but oh well. I have had 10 tantrums after a siege out of 100 dwarves and still managed to stabilize after awhile.

That and it's a nice fort to live in of course  ;).

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Most convoluted pond filling method
« on: April 16, 2008, 11:55:00 am »
Pumping water up from an underground river into a walled "aqueduct" across the "roof" level of my cliff fort, then dumping down the cliff face of my fort into a channel along the main road, into the pond.  There.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Coolest Bedroom Ever
« on: February 08, 2008, 11:46:00 am »
So I ended up with a many levels tall waterfall and gorge in one corner of my map.  After extensive excavation, I ended up on the high plateau where I was able to harvest wood unmolested by wildlife.  Another great benefit, I had the idea of creating a bedroom suspended over the gorge.  This required channeling down, building walls, then floors on the walls, then more pillars on the floor, then a floor on the pillar in order to get "indoor" tiles where I could build a bed.  I finished it off with a nice statue in each corner.  The biggest bonus was when a Dungeon Master showed up and I was able to assign it to him.  What's your favorite room you've created?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Unexpected Consequences - Fire Outside
« on: August 29, 2007, 11:08:00 am »
So I prematurely breached the deep and demons killed 90% of my population.  Luckily I had drafted them all and threw them down to that end of the fort and they overwhelmed the demons.  I'm still running the fort to see if they can come back, since most of their material possessions are intact.  It won't help that half the population is nobles.

Anywhoo...I happen to glance outside and 1/4 of my wilderness is covered in ash.  At first I thought I had a forest fire, but apparently a flaming dwarf had run screaming down my trade road and lit my silk rope restraint on fire (I like to tie up wardogs outside to harass random kobolds).  I wonder when it will go out?  I wonder how the trade caravans will like the smoke?
